Interview

Interview: A Title Winning Debut for Sky Sports Champion

Jason Barlow’s debut Sky Fantasy Football campaign proved to be one most managers can only dream of, as he took the title and grabbed the game’s £50,000 top prize at the first time of asking.

This achievement was particularly impressive given that he managed to hold on to the lead since the end of last year.

Going into the final day he also had to fend off stiff competition from one of Fantasy Football’s most experienced managers, Pascal Evans, who was leading the chasing pack in second spot.

Pascal has a fifth-place finish already across his seven-year Sky Fantasy career and also has five top 1,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seasons under his belt.

In the latest of our post-season interviews, we ask Jason about his incredible Sky Sports campaign, his battle to hang onto the top spot and his tips for success in this limited transfers format.

Congratulations on the win. Take us through your emotions on the final day as you attempted to keep Pascal and others at bay.

Jason: The final day and the entire last two or three weeks were incredibly nerve-racking. On the day itself, I was at home with my partner, trying to keep myself distracted as I knew I had no decisions left to make – I was always going to captain Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and I was out of transfers.

Going into the day I was 22 points clear of Pascal and 37 clear of third place. Over the previous weeks I had managed to work out what Pascal’s team was and I knew he didn’t have any transfers left as well.

The only meaningful differences were that Pascal had Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Manchester City midfielder Raheem Sterling versus my key differentials, Spurs’ Davinson Sanchez, Sterling’s team-mate Kevin De Bruyne and Everton striker Cenk Tosun. I thought his three were better than mine, but not 22 points better. As long as captains didn’t swing things too much then I knew I was well placed, but that didn’t stop the nerves.

In the end, we both captained Salah and I was fortunate that his three differentials didn’t do enough to close the gap. I got calmer as the matches went on, but it wasn’t until De Bruyne got the assist at the end that I really believed I might have done it.

By 5 pm I was sure I’d beaten Pascal and reasonably confident that I must have held off the third-placed manager. Thankfully once the tables updated that night, I saw that I’d done enough. The main feeling at the time was relief. Having been top since the end of 2017, it would have been devastating not to hang on.

Pascal is a really nice guy; it was great to see him claim second and earn a very well deserved payout (the runner-up wins £5,000).

What does your partner as well as family and friends think of your achievement? Have they been supportive over the campaign? Or do they see it as an unwelcome distraction for you?

Jason: They’ve all been incredibly supportive. My partner bore the brunt of the stresses as the season wore on, but she was always there to keep me calm. I think once everyone found out how much money was at stake they realised it had become more than just a hobby or meaningless distraction!

This season has been different with the addition of two Overhauls (similar to FPL’s wildcards). What is your opinion of them? Do they add to the game or hinder managers?

Jason: As this was my first season playing the Sky Sports game I don’t know what it was like without the Overhauls, but I thought they added an interesting dimension.

I think the first one, during the late summer international break, was well placed as it was just after the transfer window had closed and we had enough information to make some informed selections; to be honest I’ve always Wildcarded around that time in FPL anyway. It will be interesting to see what they do next season, as the transfer window closes before the season starts.

I found the second one, around the January window, helpful in setting up for the blank Gameweeks ahead. There is an argument that it punishes those that have saved their transfers, but I took the opportunity to load up on Liverpool players knowing that I had the luxury of removing them for players with a Double Gameweek once the postponements had passed. So even though it helped those with fewer transfers, I think there were still ways to gain an edge.

Who have been your key players and what have been your best decisions over the season?

Jason: My best move has to have been bringing in Alexis Sanchez while he was at Arsenal as captain at the end of December for the Gunners’ match with Crystal Palace, which was the only game that day. His brace and man of the match award took me to the top of the rankings for the first time, and I managed to hang on to that position for the remainder of the season.

Elsewhere, I had Salah for the entire season and for much of the campaign I had four or five Manchester City players as well. I also came out of the first Overhaul with double, and then within a few weeks, triple Burnley defence, which was very helpful during their flurry of clean sheets in the first third of the season.

Who have been your villains?

Jason: It would have to be Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen. Like many, I got sucked into the trap of believing he was a nailed-on, cheap route into the Blues defence. We all know how that turned out and I ended up keeping him from the second Overhaul all the way to the bitter end.

There weren’t too many other villains. I’m tempted to include  Davinson Sanchez as I had him for a while in the first half of the season when Spurs stopped keeping clean sheets and then he got sent off against Watford. However, he atoned for his sins recently, getting me a very handy 22 points across the last three Gameweeks, although the most recent rotation with Toby Alderweireld was less welcome.

With limited transfers and no price changes, the Sky Sports game requires different skills to FPL. What is your general advice to other managers in terms of strategy?

Jason: It does require some different skills. I’d say you need a bit more patience and to anticipate holding players for longer. That’s easier said than done and, of course, a lot of my players performed well given my rank, but it needs to be into any long or mid-term plans.

On that note, I’d say planning is incredibly important. In FPL you can afford to knee-jerk players in and out for a hit, but with limited transfers, you can’t do that in Sky Sports. You need to plan a few weeks ahead and have transfers in mind, not only to maximise their impact but also to ensure you have captains every match day.

Finally, bonus points have to be taken into account. The members’ area on FFScout is very helpful in this regard as it has all the data. Defenders who regularly get passing bonus are worth their weight in gold.

Is Sky now your preferred Fantasy game?

Jason: My record in FPL is fairly mixed. A few decent seasons interspersed with some rubbish ones. This season was one of my worst in FPL, so although there are parallels, success in one certainly doesn’t guarantee success in the other.

I’d probably say Sky Sports is the one for me now, which I never thought I’d say before this season. Although FPL is fun and I’ll always take part, the Sky Sports game suits my style more given the extra planning needed, which sometimes I feel doesn’t get rewarded in FPL.

Finally, what will you do with your prize money?

Jason: I haven’t fully decided yet. It’ll start with a nice holiday with my partner, and then I’m sure most of it will end up on something boring like a deposit for a house.

Dont think so, it the international gambling laws that are the problem. A company registered offshore might be able to. It is a shame Betfair do not move into the Fantasy arena

I've made 6 teams already for the Telegraph. They will surely benefit hugely from getting the game launched over three weeks out.

It's a fiver for 1 extra, tenner for 3 and twenty for 8. But I had a 10 team package from a hugely unsuccessful Premier League season with some left over. 10 teams is too many to keep track of in one game!

        We'll, it is for me.

How much is a hit worth?

I am trying to find out how much an average hit costs in terms of points loss for the following gameweek. I have finally analysed all my transfers in and out and calculated the points I would have had if I had not made the transfer including bench points that would have been earned if the outgoing player was injured and on bench

271 points from 48 transfers in While the players I took out would have made 106 points if kept in. Hazard did the most damage, took him out before his 16 points in Gw 24

so 271 - 106 divided by 48 = 3.43 so each transfer added 3.43 of value compared with leaving in the previous player and using a bench player if he was injured. If all these transfers were hits then on average 3.43 - 4 = minus 0.57 per transfer.

So each hit would have only lost half a point in the initial week of the hit. With improvements in team value and bringing in a better player than left then you could expect the benefits to extend far beyond One week so giving up an initial half a point for the hit looks well worth it when One is needed.

This is a very small sample, so I am going to analyse the transfers of a few other teams to see how they compare. I thought I would do Jontys team first as he goes for a long term approach and does not bring in players for an instant big win.

        Jontys result was very different

202 points from 42 transfers in but he took out a whopping 131 points

        202-131 =71 divided by 42 = 1.69 1.69-4 = -2.31

So each transfer if a hit would have had an initial cost of 2.31 points. If they had been hits he would have taken an initial beating.

I was not expecting to see such variance between the Two results. Not really helpful. Is it explained by variance due to small sample size? I guess it is.

          42 transfer including FTs ?
Hard to calculate,if you dont take hit you will go in other direction with FT.

Took few hits this season to get players with 0.0 or 0.1 ITB left.

Just messaged you about this too but will post here too as relevant.

What I'd really like to see as an indication of transfer and hit success and failure is how well that player did over a long period of time in a team, rather than after one week and also versus the player that made way.

Imminent transfers can be misleading regarding success and failure of a hit or transfer.

For example, Mooy got me 10 pts immediately...but long term was a failure as that's pretty much all I got out of him...meanwhile he's occupying a spot that could have gone to someone else.

On the flip side Firmino got me 2 pts when I got him in - but over the next few weeks was legendary in terms of points. Once again immediate transfer data doesn't show his true success.

For you Sterling in later in the season looks great via immediate transfer data - but long term was a loss as it involved selling Mahrez who was fantastic last two.

Also worth pointing out that immediate transfer point success was much lower this year compared to last year.

Is it possible to include data from previous seasons?

Cant say i spent much time this year for FPL, but having played for 5 seasons and taken many hits when i had the time to use for FPL, my opinion is that a hit has usually a good outcome.

First of all, we choose the player we ll drop and the player we ll get. So most of the times, there are fixtures, form and instict taken into account. Getting Hazard for a hit vs West Brom at home for Sanchez vs Spurs away should give the extra 4 points immediately. It should, not necessarily means it will of course.

Moreover, we take into account following fixtures (so we give more time to the player we get to outscore the player we drop), value's change and the overall outcome of our team (we may take a hit now to get cash and make another move next week). That means that there is flexibility when one chooses to take lets say one hit per week and not wait for the Wildcard to get a few certain players.

Of course the 4 points are not always easy to get, but FPL isnt only about current points. Its like any investment in the world, high risk high reward (or loss). If one checks the first team of every gameweek, it usually has more than 5-6 transfers that week. Which means that every gameweek gives opportunities. Critical is to find them. Happy to see the outcome after you finish your research Trig.

          It's all context.
Is the extra hit to enable the main xfer which goes on to do great (or provide ownership coverage) ?
Is it essentially a free hit because of injury/suspension/BGW ?
          Is it for a DGW?

The best time to assess might be GWs 5 -25 where it's a relatively 'normal' period.

I'll give them this, the FPL seem to have weighted it right with 4 points.

Wait, I was about to do this then got confused by something.

The one that you wouldn't have made if you had only made one transfer.

This would normally be the one for which you were expecting the smaller gain, unless the one for which you were expecting the bigger gain would not have been possible on its own, in which case the two ought to be considered together as a single transaction for a hit.

I think you should just look at the transfers made with hits and ignore those made with free transfers (except perhaps when the free transfer is necessary to make the hit transfer possible - in which case the two transfers should be considered together as a single transaction for a hit). In terms of immediate gains, any positive gain on a free transfer is good, even if it's only one point, but a transfer made with a hit needs 4 points to break even.

For a longer term evaluation you probably need to take a large sample and plot total points against total transfers or total hits for players in various bands (e.g. top 1k, top 10k etc).

You are dealing with averages in hindsight which is a measure of how good your hits were this year but the value of hits is a range.

In hindsight the hit is worth it if its actual value returns or exceeds the 4 points over the remainder of the season, obviously tricky to measure exactly.

When making a transfer in foresight the aim as a fantasy manager is that the expected value of the transfer will return or exceed the 4 pts over the remainder of the season.

Good players will get this right more often than not and you pull expect to see a better return on average than worse managers, though the role of luck is obviously huge.

We played the MacDonald's one at work in 2014. It was lame because you could make transfers when the teams are released and not get penalised. It is designed to increase page views for advertising revenue.

There was a foxsports.com/au game which was basically FPL reskinned. We should have played that.

What is the point in the achievement badges?

Bench boost looks borderline useless with the 'in-round' transfers.

Maximum captain is an interesting autopilot feature. Suggested similar in the past for FPL, an autopilot chip which automatically picks your best 11 and captain from your 15.

            Badges are pointless yes.

The bench boost appears to add little value but I think if combined with Wildcards (so either use in R16 & WC in QF, or WC and boost in the third group game) it will add the most value. Both have most value when applied to multiple games so definitely best not to save them for last few rounds like FPL.

I've always been a wait and see kind of person when it comes to managerial appointments but if he can bring Foden in that wouldn't be a bad move for starters...

Attacking manager so Arnie should be a good pick again and Lanzini could be a nice alternative.

I like his style, their attacking players should provide decent value under him and will be worth a look from the start if the fixtures land nicely and we’re on limited budgets.

Amazing coup for West Ham. Given Pelleigrini's attacking style, which he has said he will continue, West Ham attacking players are now more valuable.

If we get a favourable set of fixtures I will be investing for sure. Attacking players like Arnie, Lanzini and Cresswell should be good value (if FPL don't account for the new manager).

It will be interesting to see what West Ham do in the market, I imagine a new striker will be incoming...

Interesting video where he explains his tactics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JGqOTN301U

He is the complete antithesis of Mourinho. He focuses on his team's attacking strengths and doesn't change his team based on the opponent, too much. I have a feeling Cresswell is going to thrive...

          Congrats to Jason. Massive achievement.
I was hoping to have a good year myself and was excited by the new 'wildcards'; the ability to pre-set captaincy changes and the new podcast.

          But . . .
I'm still bitter that half-way through the season Sky Sports blocked people's sign-in unless they give them proof of identity. (Optimus, how did you get on in the end?)
It was to do with gambling rules - for a game I've been playing since I was a kid via the newspaper !!!
Either way, a pre-season heads up would've been fine. I've had gambling demons and would have walked away just fine. I'd rather spend my money on membership here and as a patreon to the Always Cheating boys.
But after being heavily invested for a good while during the season (and years prior), to have the year unceremoniously ended !
          It really stank.

Not sure if anyone will find this useful, but this google sheet:

          https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1T0D53wYUoIzOgnV5kAex2SpReQevagHSfO5ZeRCRuIw/edit?usp=sharing

has the world cup group stage schedule on it in chronological order. I've pulled in the FIFA ranking points for all the teams to 'score' each game - highlighting the matches where there is the biggest imbalance. There's also a sheet with a pivot table which shows which teams overall have the most positive imbalances overall in their favour. Not a lot of surprises there with Germany, Belgium and Portugal coming out high up. I thought it might be useful as a guide to which teams to start with most players from and then when to use transfers on which teams in a game like the Telegraph one.

If you don't like the FIFA ranking points as a guide to team strength you can just change the numbers in column C of the FIFA Rankings sheet and the rest should recalculate so you could give Russia some home advantage or downgrade Belgium if you think they're overrated, for example. Hope it helps someone.

The Diff column is the number of ranking points the left-hand team is above the right-hand team according to FIFA. So for the first game, Russia have 493 ranking points and Saudi Arabia have 462 so Russia are 31 ranking points 'better' than Saudi Arabia. If the right-hand team is better than the left-hand team this will be a negative number, so Uruguay are 340 ranking points better than Egypt which shows up as -340. The colour coding in columns I and J is just based on the size of the difference, so the redder the cell the bigger the gap between the teams; the aim is to identify matches where one team is more likely to do very well (based on the rankings). So the biggest single predicted mismatch is Korea Republic vs Germany on 27th June where Germany are 1024 ranking points better.

The colour coding in columns E and H highlights any team that has a 300 point or more advantage over their opponents.

All the numbers are based on FIFA ranking points: http://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/ranking-table/men/index.html

I'm not going to try and explain or defend those numbers, but it was the only set of data I could find to try and do a quick ranking. Feel free to replace the numbers in column C of the FIFA ranking sheet with any team ratings you fancy. The rest of the sheet should update automatically (though you might want to change the >300/

          How You Won Your Mini-League?

Pretty awful season for me, but managed to sneak my ML in the last 3 wks. Opponent failed to make anything of his chips, but the real turning point was a small piece of research I carried out in the buildup to BGW31:

          https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/03/16/the-community-round-up-237/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_17820084

Prior to crunching those numbers I was strongly consider a Firmino captaincy punt...subsequently I changed tact, mischievously exclaiming to my rival that I was going rogue with my captain pick despite concreting in Mo.

Worked like a dream, he capped Bobby (on his FH no less) and I began the swift and satisfying overhaul of his considerable lead 😆

Kane to be named captain. If he thought the backlash from that goal claim was bad enough he has no idea what's coming his way if England don't deliver the bare minimum.

Lloris, Jedinak and Kjaer have all signed a petition to FIFA requesting that Guerrero’s ban be rescinded because he didn’t do anything to try and enhance his game, because cocaine evidently wouldn’t do that. Fifa surely can’t accept it because it would set a precedent effectively allowing recreational drug taking for footballers - what do you all think about the issue?

If there wasn't a WC about to happen nobody would complain about the length of the ban. And that shouldn't affect it. The rules are: you get caught, you get banned. It's easier for Fifa to draw the line at no drugs at all than try find the line between recreational and performance-enhancing.

Lots of tea in South America is brewed with coca leaves, I think he's been banned through drinking tea with traces of cocaine in rather than sticking anything up his nose for recreational use. Fifa need to look at cases individually

Definitely a fair point. Coca tea and chewing coca leaves is normal in countries like Peru. Helps deeling with altitude sickness. That's not the same as cocain.

Harry Kane cries to the FA over a harmless tweet and then gets given the captaincy as a token gesture. It would be fair enough if he was a team player but this is a geezer who swore on his daughter's like to claim a goal off his teammate. He is in for some more stick now.

            Oh stop it.

He’s our best player and if he wasn’t English all the hipsters would be creaming over him.

Captaincy doesn’t mean that much, but he fully deserves it.

Harry captained England the most in 2017 so it's hardly surprising that he's been given the nod full time, with the other contenders being Hendo/Hart/Cahill/Dier it's not that surprising that Kane's got it in all honesty, just hope he fare's better than Rooney.

He should. At 5.5 his ownership will be 40%+ by default.

Ideally he should be around 5.8 though but can't see FPL introducing that kind of prices.

I had DDG most of the season. But I don’t get why people are desperate to get him ?

I’m going to go for the usual 4.5/4.5 and start from there as I always do. It’s the best value way.

I’m hoping Utd sign a leftback and he’s priced reasonably.

            1. nobwak

People want a United defensive asset that's guaranteed to play. Simple as that. If their left back ticks that box then he'd be fine too.

If he’s 1.5 mil more than a standard keeper, you may as well go for Valencia over a standard 5 mill defender imo.

I like DDG, but I’ll be avoiding. It’s a nice differential to start and so many keepers for bad teams can haul.

Think he might still be £5.5m.

At £6m I think he'll be too high a price for a lot of people, at £5.5m it gives you a decision to make.

A couple of seasons ago they changed the price point for goalkeepers so none were over £5.5m because a lot of managers never chose them.

I also think the start of the season was a bit of a freak for De Gea where he got lots of clean sheets in a row as well as save points, made him some very good points but over the course of the season only beat someone like Fabianski by 15 points.

If FPL are scared of crazy ownership I think they'll go 6.0, mainly due to the inevitably high ownership of Utd players at the beginning of the year!

United's goal keepers scored nearly 180 points without saving a single penalty. At the start of every season De Gea is owned by around 1/3 of the game. Do you really want him to be priced at 5.5? He's more like a 6.5 goal keeper than a 5.5 one.
