World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Morocco

Our Group B team analysis gets underway with Morocco, who have qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

Herve Renard’s side begin their campaign at 4pm on Friday 15 June with what is surely a must-win match against Iran in Saint Petersburg.

Morocco then face Portugal five days later in a 1pm kick-off in Moscow, before a 7pm showdown with Spain on Monday 25 June in Kaliningrad.

Road to Qualification

Morocco’s World Cup qualification was a triumph against the odds.

Entering at the second-round stage of CAF qualifying, they were at the time ranked 84th in the world – only the 22nd highest-seeded African team competing at that point. Indeed, their opponents in the second round, Equatorial Guinea, were some 21 places higher in the July 2015 FIFA World Rankings.

A 2-0 win in Agadir preceded a nervy 1-0 defeat in Equatorial Guinea, with Morocco – then under the stewardship of Ezzaki Badou – progressing by the narrowest of aggregate margins.

Renard then took charge of Morocco for the third and final CAF qualification round, leading his new team through an undefeated six-match group campaign. Having drawn three of their first four fixtures 0-0, Morocco then leapfrogged Ivory Coast in their penultimate match with a win over Gabon, before consolidating top spot with a 2-0 success over Les Elephants in Abidjan.

The stand-out feature of Morocco’s World Cup qualification was their impregnable defence, who kept six straight clean sheets. Six of Morocco’s 11 third round goals came in their routing of Mali in Rabat.

Most starts: Munir Mohamedi (8), Medhi Benatia (7), Romain Saiss, Mbark Boussoufa, Nordin Amrabat (6), Karim El Ahmadi, Younes Belhanda, Hakim Ziyech (5), Achraf Hakimi, Khalid Boutaib, Nabil Dirar (4)
Most goals: Khalid Boutaib (4), Hakim Ziyech (2)
Most assists: Mbark Boussoufa, Noureddine Amrabat (3), Hakim Ziyech (2)

Morocco have won all three of their friendlies since last August, defeating South Korea (3-1), Serbia (2-1) and Uzbekistan (2-0).

The Key Targets

In a group containing the European Championship holders and the 2010 World Cup winners, Morocco will have their undoubted defensive strength severely tested.

Munir Mohamedi (priced at £5.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a certain starter between the sticks and was the only Morocco player to feature in all eight of their qualifying matches.

Romain Saiss (£5.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA), who largely operates in midfield for newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers, is a likely starter alongside captain Medhi Benatia (£5.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) in the centre of defence.

Benatia grabbed the second goal in Morocco’s all-important win against Ivory Coast in qualifying and is his country’s most expensive defensive asset on Fantasy iTeam. In the five qualifying matches in which he and Saiss were partnered at the back, Morocco didn’t concede a single goal.

With two goals and as many assists in five qualifying fixtures, Hakim Ziyech (£6.7m on Fantasy iTeam | £7.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is the standout – and indeed most expensive – option in midfield. A free-kick specialist who can play across the middle, Ziyech scored on nine occasions and supplied 15 assists in 34 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax this season.

Ziyech is likely to be Morocco’s first-choice penalty taker, too, having scored from the spot in his country’s 2-1 friendly win over Serbia in March. Ziyech also provided another assist in that match. He has eight goals in 15 appearances for the national team.

Mbark Boussoufa (£5.4m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) and Watford’s Nordin Amrabat (£5.9m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0 on McDonald’s FIFA) are less of a goal threat, but with three assists apiece during qualification, represent budget midfield options with points potential. Boussoufa takes his fair share of corner-kicks and was the creator of Benatia’s goal in the aforementioned victory over Ivory Coast.

Khalid Boutaib (£5.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) could be an excellent budget pick in attack. One of the lowest-priced forwards in Fantasy iTeam, Boutaib is set to start the World Cup as Morocco’s only recognised on-field striker in a 4-1-4-1 or, in the crucial opening match against Iran, perhaps as the spearhead of a more attacking 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.

Boutaib scored four goals in as many starts in qualification, including a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Gabon. A relative latecomer to international football, Boutaib made his Morocco debut at the age of 29 and has seven goals in his 15 appearances for the national side.

The Long Shots

The leading goalscorer in the Moroccan squad is not, in fact, Boutaib, but Ayoub El Kaabi (£5.4m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.0m on McDonald’s FIFA).

The 24-year-old forward has ten goals in just eight international appearances and was top scorer in the 2018 African Nations Championship, a tournament in which only domestic league players may compete. El Kaabi is one of only three players who featured in that cup-winning squad to receive a call-up for Russia.

While Boutaib is likely to get the nod up front in Morocco’s opening match, El Kaabi is one to monitor as the group stage progresses. El Kaabi was on target in Morocco’s most recent friendly in March, a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in which many fringe players featured.

One of the most exciting prospects in this Moroccan squad is Real Madrid full-back Achraf Hakimi (£5.7m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5 on McDonald’s FIFA). The 19-year-old defender has largely been used as Dani Carvajal’s understudy by Zinedine Zidane this season but demonstrated his attacking instincts with two goals in nine La Liga appearances at right-back.

Though he didn’t feature in Morocco’s international friendly double-header in March due to injury, Hakimi is expected to be a first-choice pick in defence. Cristiano Ronaldo’s proclivity for drifting to the flanks means that Hakimi could be directly up against his Real Madrid team-mate in Morocco’s second group game against Portugal.

Areas to Avoid

On the face of it, Morocco appear to be a very well-balanced side. A defensively sound team who conceded only one goal in eight qualifying matches, they possess several players who are plying their trade in the highest reaches of European football.

What counts against them, of course, is their group opponents.

Only Belgium and Germany (both 43) scored more goals than Spain (36) and Portugal (32) in the UEFA qualification section, while no European country conceded fewer goals than Spain (three) in their ten group games.

Portugal were also watertight at the back (conceding four), while Iran (two goals conceded in ten games) had by far the best defence in the third round of AFC qualification.

Fantasy managers would, perhaps, be prudent to target Morocco players in their opening group match with Iran, before jettisoning their assets ahead of games against Portugal and Spain.

Despite being assured of a starting spot, goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi has never featured in a top-flight fixture at club level and will find himself severely tested against the likes of Ronaldo and Diego Costa.

Defensive midfielder Karim El Ahmadi (£5.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.0m on McDonald’s FIFA), who has one goal in 44 appearances for Morocco, is arguably one to swerve from a Fantasy perspective. The former Aston Villa man is likely to be stationed just in front of the back four and, at 33 years of age, his ageing limbs are a concern, particularly for the matches against Spain and Portugal in which his side will have to do the bulk of the chasing.

Who are people betting on for the golden boot?
I'm thinking likes of Cavani, Suarez, Lukaku, Lewandowski as these are goalscorers in easy groups.
Would love to know people's views on this.

He's been very good for Belgium in qualifying and as a proven flat-track bully could put 4/5 past Panama, Tunisia and England in the groups, before likely playing a weak Polish defence in the last 16.

If one of Cavani or Suarez fully takes on the goalscoring mantle, like Cavani in qualifying, then they will likely have 5/6 goals by the time they go out in the quarters, or maybe even semis, but if they share goals then they could be stuck on 4 each, not quite enough for the Golden Boot. Isco, Diego Costa, Jesus, Neymar, Werner, Muller and Lukaku are all proven goalscorers who could score big in routs over the two smaller teams in their groups, and then deeper into the competition - I'd probably back Isco or Werner to be top scorer because Spain tend not to use a traditional striker and Germany are just a good team.

Fantasy Football Scout daily Hot Topic

With Liverpool finishing off their season on Saturday, all the PL teams can now fully focus on the beginning of next season and their transfer plans. Every season there seem to be moves that change our FPL plans, with big new signings making a direct impact or under-the-radar signings changing team structures and players’ positions.

As a Fantasy manager, which transfers are you watching closely? The Fred to Manchester United rumour is building, as is Mahrez to Manchester City. Bale might be starting to make noises that he is open for a PL return, and Arsenal will surely make significant changes, as well as many other top teams.

Which signings do you think could, or will shake up our season? Which signings would you like to see in your fantasy side? And is there anyone who might leave that could make an equally big impact?

Not heard anything of Foden to West Ham, hopefully that's still in the pipeline...
Not liking the idea of Mahrez to Man City, like I haven't got enough options in that midfield already, let's just add another variable into Pep's mix SMH...
Bale's post CL interview was interesting, wouldn't surprise me if Man Utd weren't the only ones interested there...

As a Chelsea fan, losing Hazard or Willian as the rumours are suggesting would destroy us as an attacking option for this season. Keeping those two and signing one of Lewa and Icardi as are being suggested could have the opposite effect - but I'd like to see a true playmaker brought in to bring out the best in these, like Fabregas was for Costa in their primes.

As a fantasy fan, Bale coming back, assumedly to Man U, would provide a viable alternative to Salah as a top price mid that would shake up the game this season and make it a lot more interesting.

Agree on Bale. I can't really see him going anywhere else.. City don't need him, Arsenal/Liverpool probably priced out of it. Can't see Chelsea doing it unless it was a swap with Hazard, but then Bale wouldn't want it.

Are you happy with Chelsea defence/midfield? Haven't heard too many Chelsea rumours what's out there?

I'm quite happy with our defense and midfield - as long as we keep Kante, Azpi and Courtois we'll find a way of keeping CSs. Another CB wouldn't go amiss but our attack has to be priority after last season and with Sarri incoming - as an attacking manager he needs something to play with.

Bale would be hard to resist if he returns, Fekir or whoever else Liverpool buys to replace Coutinho could be good value and I also quite like the idea of Mitrovic as a third striker so I hope Fulham can get that one wrapped up.

The game massively needs a budget striker option next season. If we're stuck with the same third striker pool as we were at the end of this season, I can't see the 3-4-3 being a viable starting formation in August. Glenn Murray will be 58 by then!

He finished the 2012/13 season at 11.1m, compared with 13.7m for van Persie.
He scored 249 points at 7.5ppg that season, compared with RVP's 262 at 6.9ppg.
They would both have been about 12.0-13.0m for 2013/14 if he'd stayed at Spurs.
There was a big pre-season debate about which one we should include in our starting squads if we couldn't afford both.

I'm 99% certain Bale was in the game before he went to Real Madrid. I didn't play that season, so I can't be sure, but I think he matched RvP's 14.0 price tag.

              You could be right.
Bale definitely was in the game until his transfer.
RVP finished the season at 13.5m, but he had only played 21 matches for 112 points at 5.3ppg, so his price might have fallen 0.5m from where it started.

I'm sure he was! But think his price was 13.0. Prob justified by Persie going 250ish two seasons in a Tow, where as Bale had "only" done it once.

Mahrez to City would be a poor move from a FPL perspective. Unless they sell one of the other wingers, we'll see even more rotation.

Pereira to Leicester is an interesting move IMO, but I'm afraid he'll cost 5.0.

Pinch of salt required here, but a respected poster on a Spurs forum is saying he's heard from the Bale family that he's going to Manchester United.

        Definitely 5.0m I think.

Bale the really interesting one so far I think. Any more attacking options at City get lost.

I wonder if a new Chelsea striker could be the move that really changes things.. or maybe at West Ham?

I hope Fabianski will sign for one the PL sides to give us budget friendly nailed on goalkeeper option.

Sarri as a Chelsea manager may mean more focus on scoring goals - lets hope Willian can win him over.

Will stay clear of any offensive United signings - Jose puts me off.

Interesting to see what happens to Danny Rose this summer. If he gets a move and he's something like £5.5m next season (given his dearth of appearances this year), he'd be on my watchlist.

Mahrez to Man City would be a nightmare for fpl managers. More rotation.

I’d love to see Bale back in the PL but I can’t see that happening. Not this season anyway.

It’ll be interesting to see how Spurs improve in the summer or if they will at all. They desperately need stronger attacking options to come off the bench/challenge the current starters. Somebody like Zaha might be decent for them.

Don't know why anyone gets hyped about Mourinho attackers. Bale would be better off taking a pay cut and going to Spurs than going to Man U.

More rotation means more trouble. I guess a good defensive mid and goalkeeper for Arsenal with friendly pricing could see someone like Bellerin (if he stays) being in high demand.

Should Bale join Utd , who will leave ? Martial, Mata, Lingard ?
Personnally would like to see Martial playing regular football upfront - could be very tasty option.

Looks to me like Martial will leave. Mata will stay as cover - he seems happy enough in the team and not as a starter, and Lingard will stay.

I see Rashford and Lingard as the two who will be bench players and help with rotation for CL, injuries, congested fixtures.

4-3-3 with Sanchez - Lukaku - RW and Pogba - Fred - Matic

4-2-3-1 option gets Lingard in a bit more

Fekir is very interesting. If Liverpool manage to get him, I doubt he is being brought in as a backup. His analytics look extremely strong, if FPL mark him as a midfielder there is a high chance they make a pricing error.

If Bale came in as a forward I feel as thought they will probably put a prohibitive pricetag on him.

I don't understand the Mahrez thing at all, will be interesting to see Peps intentions with him. I'll probably give it a wide berth until we've gathered more info.

      Fred is a DM, skip.

Id like to see ManU take up their buyback option on Depay, he has had a great season in France. Worth keeping an eye on Martial, but signing Sanchez has really devalued him as an FPL asset.

Both for my own team (Manchester United) and for fantasy, I'd love two attacking full backs to be real options. United defenders are great for clean sheets but don't have much attacking threat barring the very occasional Valencia strike or Smalling set piece header. If we had a right/left back who could marry the defensive resilience and CS potential with a good chance of assists/goals, they'd be a monster option.

Someone in the ilk of Walker/Mendy/Trippier/Davies/Alonso/Robertson at United would be fantastic, and also avoid suitors taking a gamble on the centre back injury/benching carousel or paying what will potentially be £6m for a keeper.

Oh and yes, inb4 the 'lol United attacking threat' posts :p

It depends if Pogba is staying, but Sandro would be a huge signing for us. Left back is our most critical position this summer along with a centre mid. Right back is a priority too but I think Valencia could eek out one more season playing a full schedule, if not ideal.

I personally think the player is allready there from an FPL-perspective. The only problem is he needs to Get reclassified.
Ashley Young, playing 38gms, should offer something like 15-20cs +2-3goals+5-6assists.

This is the scenario i'm currently hoping for. He'll prob be priced @ 6.0 due to comptetition from Shaw,

Bale and Arsenal in the same sentence.

I like it! I think Zaha is one of the most intriguing prospects if his price is set before a move. Hopefully it'll increase his points output, rather than give him strings of 1 pointers.

His move could be good for Schlupp if Palace can't find a replacement of Zaha's quality. Imagine him as a starter if he's still a cheap defender! 😮

Exactly. I see big things happening at spurs finally. Poch made it clear he wanted his ambitions matching before talks. He came out with more than the years extension. Bigger stadium, more funds. Plus the contract that gives us first refusal on Bale. It's going to take a player like this to even get close to City...how many players like Bale are available where we have first refusal

Yes 9 would still be undervalued as Firmino and Mane have outperformed their prices. Reckon they are worth 10 plus. But I doubt he will be 9 more like 8.5

            • 13 Years

I dont think they were undervalued.
Eriksen and Alli both produced 200+seasons last year and were priced 9.5 ahead of this season. Mane and Firmino lived up to their pricetag, and even though they both enjoyed exceptional spells, i dont think they offered exceptional valu considering the season as a whole.

I might be picky though. The game is also largely based on selecting players when they hit their spells of good form.

Neither made 200 and only 175 for Alli.
              Points per minute:
              Mane 147/2189 =.067
              Firmino 181/2760 =.066
              Eriksen 199/3218 =.061
              Alli 175/2957 =.059

Mane and Firmino both exceeded their pricetags especially Firmino at 8.5. Fekir will do the same mark my words.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up - PSG in a swap for Neymar isn't impossible and neither is Juve; I don't see him coming back to the PL or going to another La Liga team, so it's either the moneybags of PSG or the quality of Juve - no Bundesliga team has the money to pay him.

he spoke frankly about it at that time because he did nothing to influence that game and this way he is still the main headline. I promise you he is saying absolutely nothing about his future if he's scored two goals, not Bale.

Ronaldo is 33 and will know that this is his last chance to play at the top level elsewhere. He's been at Real 9 years, has won everything with them repeatedly and has more money than anyone could want - maybe he simply wants a change in a slightly easier league to start winding his career down, whilst still impressing, in Ligue 1 for example.

If Ronaldo goes, Bale may well stay to take his place, but both leaving is not infeasible with the embarassment of riches Real have already and can purchase this summer

I agree. I think Ronaldo wants to leave before he starts to get benched for important games, though not sure that'll be next season yet. The obvious problem is where would he be able to go.

Bale goes, in my opinion. I think he knows it's time, though some nice words from Zidane, paired with Ronaldo leaving and confidence from the CL final might convince him to stay.

The only way they both go is if Ronaldo goes as part of a swap for Neymar, I think

The Egyptian FA had an official statement yesterday saying he will. He needs a maximum of 3 weeks to be ready, so worst case he will miss the first game against Uruguay.

Yeah I know. It should be Firmino and Vardy, but people have these blinkers on and don't remember that Kane blanks for half the season at that price.

It is a strange one. Jonty posted a Hot Topic when the season finished about who was the biggest disappointment or troll and Kane was the player most people mentioned. Ergo, I was hugely surprised to see him top of the poll...perhaps some people voted based on overall score in FPL?

To be honest, with the way the season panned out, the TOTS should be a 4-5-1, with Firmino up top! Aubameyang would have been worthy with a full season under his belt too.

Not my point. Loads of bad decisions once again on the big stage.

The standard of refereeing is a serious concern IMO.

Too much at stake these days to have so many matches decided by the man in black.

Sounds similar to what they have on Youtube comments. It'll tell you if a comment has been marked as potential spam, but it remains hidden and it's up to the user if they want to decide to view it.

Ironically though I'd be more likely to read a hidden comment out of curiosity to see why it got downvoted so many times.

That’s fine you can do that but by deafault they’d be collapsed. We’d have a tick box to show/hide them by default if you wanted unfiltered.

I guess that could work but I think you might need to lower the threshold on matchdays, relative to whatever downvote level you set generally. After all, that is when we could use it most! Maybe automatically hide anything that's flagged as little as twice when the trolls are out in force on a Saturday morning?

There will definitely be tweaks and rules I'll set up, if we end up going this route. The number of users online is so different at different times of the year and throughout the week.

In fact, a year-round dedicated RMT thread would negate this problem. Perhaps people who rate 100 teams could get a Team Rater badge in their profile, to provide an incentive for people to provide feedback. Meanwhile, it keeps RMTs off the main thread and prevents them from being auto-hidden.

I mean, RMT threads have been tried in the past and they just don't work. I somehow don't see how you could measure a RMT reply as well - what if someone just posts a couple of words in response, does that count toward a RMT "badge"?

I like the idea of a pinned post at the top of every page where every RM goes

Maybe I didn't think this through, ha. I'm sure I heard rumblings about badges possibly being introduced but I could be making that up...and it'd probably be confined to rewards for number of posts targets and stuff like that. My suggestion probably isn't viable thinking about it.

Thanks. I think my workaround is unnecessary anyway...maybe RMTs won't be downvoted into oblivion if the downvotes threshold is high enough when the site is quiet...and during matches, as I say, they'll be few and far between anyway (and won't be missed if they do get hidden).

But yeah a small range of profile badges, viewable by others who click on your profile, could make for a nice addition. It might make people feel more invested in the site and make them more likely to make worthwhile contributions, if it's done in the right way.

I might start with the risk with the plan to WC somewhere between Gw 4-6 to rearrange my team, then if Salah is still at this year's production level then I'll bring him in

    3. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

Mané has been on good form at several times this season, often providing a similar level of goals to Salah - but for some reason, never the same amount of points. Then again, he could be 9.0 next season. That could be about 4.0 reinvested elsewhere - two 6.0 defs instead of two 4.0, as an extreme example. Could that make it worth it? I'm not sure.
Pre-season as usual is the deciding factor, and there will be a lot of nice free analysis via hot topics and the preseason tab on here 😛

Not suggesting he would be - but could potentially see a rise in his output at the expense of Salah's, perhaps levelling out their points total to maybe 240 for Salah and 200 for Mane, as opposed to 303 and 147.

          1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
            • 7 Years

I mean, Mané has always been slightly injury prone so I doubt that he would get really close to 200 myself - plus the addition of Fekir could lead to a bit more rotation/ sharing of points depending on how Klopp lines up, there's a lot of variables.

    4. Darth_Krid
      • 6 Years

I'm hugely tempted to go for Mane next season if he's £3m cheaper than Salah. Only issue is I wouldn't be as comfortable captaining Mane, especially with no pens.

I'd prefer us to keep Hazard and sign a top quality striker, of the Lewa or Icardi vein. Hazard has a creative element that Bale doesn't and I think that we really need unless we sign a creative mid to do the job Fabregas is too old to do.

Games with 8 + points this season (Captaincy options)

    Salah - 20
    Sterling - 15
    Firmino - 12
    KDB - 12
    Kane - 12
    Mahrez - 12
    D. Silva - 11
    Eriksen - 10
    Vardy - 10
Aubameyang - 5 (doubled to 10 if he'd had the whole season)
    Sane - 9
    Aguero - 9
    Otamendi - 9
    Azpilicueta - 8
    Son - 8
    Hazard - 8
    Jesus - 7
    Pogba - 7
    Lukaku - 6
    Lacazette - 6
    Arnautovic - 6 (all after Gw18)
    Alonso - 6

I've probably missed some out but this was just an idea to see if there were enough players who could take the captaincy in Salah's absence - make of it what you want. I put the top premium defenders in there to see where they'd stack up and Otamendi in particular had some interesting results.

Tbh 8 points is an entirely mediocre captaincy return. I'd hope for more from my cap

        I mean 8x2 so 16 points in a GW

I realised, but it always feels like damage control if you get a 16 pointer. Like of course it's better than nothing, but aiming higher makes sense

It's probably more emotional than anything else, I just like a big fat captain score I guess 😛

Using 5 as a benchmark for success makes defenders much more viable and secure captaincy options imo - Otamendi, Alonso and Azpi would all have been 'successful captaincy' options this season in at least 15 games this season - Salah would have been one in 26 games

        8 x 2 x 38 = 608 pts. Pretty good for a captain

Salah, Kane, Auba looking like the essential three big hitters to start the season with (pending fitness after WC).

Prefer PPM, but thanks for the effort.

'Haul' counts are misleading imo. What if Hazard got 8 x Hauls and 30 x 2-pointers? Is he a better captaincy option than someone with 6 x hauls and a much higher PPM? These haul data are only useful if the hauls are predictable, and even then, PPM or some other metric more related to foootball on the pitch (e.g. xG) would be more powerful.

Not having a go; just rambling about my thoughts on the topic. It's fun to see how many 8+ scores each player got though. Thanks again 🙂

I guess we all saw the CL final? Thoughts on all this 'feeling sorry' talk about Karius?

Given he's an international Premier League player why should we feel sorry for him? He's on more money per week than most of us earn in a year to play professional football. Those errors were not befitting of a professional football player. I watch a lot of non-league - 16 games last season watching AFC Totton in the Southern League West and have watched them for 14 years now - and I've never, ever seen goalkeeping like that. Nevermind from a pro...

He's blatantly not good enough. Nor is his mate Mignolet. Klopp should have addressed this. The most recent clanger I can recall was in the 1-3/4-3 Bournemouth debacle.

For me, Klopp has cost his team a serious chance of winning the CL which might never come along again all due to his myopic view of his keepers... He's the one who should be getting the stick. That's three lost finals in three years off the back of a bad run of not getting over the line at Dortmund.

Rank bad management in my eyes. Goals win games, but clean sheets win titles....

I mean. I feel sorry for him because he fekked up so hard hell be feeling it for the rest of his life. It's called empathy. Sure I agree he isn't good enough, doesn't stop me from feeling bad about it

I really fell sorry for the young lad he must be going through a lot of mental anguish right now and i hope he can get over it and deal with it in time.

You are right about Klopp he is just if not more culpable for putting an inexperienced kid in a big job like that and expecting miracles.

Does Klopp qualify as a specialist in failure? If so, someone should call him it before next season when Liverpool do the treble.

Is it only a game though? In a CL final? Would Buffon make those mistakes? Would Mourinho, Conte, Guardiola make such a risky call between the nets and stand by it? At the expense of losing a title...

In the 1990 FA cup final Fergie dropped Jim Leighton who he'd worked with before at Aberdeen because he could see he was gone in the 3-3 vs Palace. Les Sealey had a great game in the repaly and Utd won the cup...

Jesus, it wasn't exactly a risky call. Karius generally paid off for Klopp this season, showing visible improvement. Not Klopps fault Karius brainfarted (which may or may nor have had something to do with Ramos elbowing him in the face)

Of course. They are kicking a ball. Its a game.

Gigi conceded something like 6 of Cristianos last 8 shots on his goal. They werent howlers like this two but he is still on a massive decline and it shows. Karius was great the last few months, much better than lets say Buffon. If it was due to nerves or something else we'll never know but him starting was the correct choice based on the information we had prior to the game.

Knock-on effect of course is that it's likely finished his PL career at 24. I just can't see a way back for the fella. I guess it'll be a move to Germany or whatever to rebuild confidence.

I think it's ok to appreciate he's not the best and made epic errors, while also acknowledging he got a deliberate elbow in the head that should have been addressed.
