Our coverage of the pre-World Cup action gets underway this morning, with a couple of Premier League players already on the scoresheet.

Tottenham’s Son Heung-min steers South Korea to victory over Honduras, while Chelsea frontman Olivier Giroud opens the scoring as France see off Republic of Ireland.

South Korea 2 Honduras 0

Tottenham’s Son Heung-min was among the goals as South Korea kicked off a run of four pre-World Cup friendlies with a win.

Shin Tae-young’s side – who face Sweden, Germany and Mexico in Group F – operated in a 4-4-2 formation, with the Spurs man stationed up front.

Handed the captain’s armband, with former Swansea midfielder Ki Sung-yeung on the bench, Son fired home from distance on the hour-mark before he made way on 78 minutes.

After a raft of second-half changes, substitute Moon Seon-min added a second from close range late on. Lee Seung-Woo and Hwang Hee-Chan supplied the assists.

South Korea XI: Cho Hyun-Woo; Ko Yo-Han (Lee Yong 77), Jung Seung-Hyeon (Oh Ban-Suk 71), Kim Young-Gwon, Hong Chul (Kim Min-Woo 56) ; Lee Chung-Yong (Moon Seon-Min 56), Ju Se-Jong, Jung Woo-Young, Lee Seung-Woo (Park Joo-Ho 85); Hwang Hee-Chan, Son Heung-Min (Kim Shin-Wook 78)

Turkey 2 Iran 1

Iran fell to defeat in their penultimate friendly of the summer thanks to a brace from Everton’s Cenk Tosun.

Lining up in a 4-5-1 formation, Carlos Quieroz’s men had to wait until stoppage time before finding the net. Nottingham Forest winger Ashkan Dejagah – one of many second-half subs – converted a penalty after their hosts had handled on the line.

They now head to a training camp in Russia and will play a final friendly against Lithuania on June 8.

Iran face a daunting task to make it out of Group B, where they are set to face Morocco, Spain and Portugal.

Iran XI: Alireza Beiranvand; Ramin Rezaeian, Rouzbeh Cheshmi, Morteza Pouraliganji, Milad Mohammadi; Alireza Jahanbakhsh (Mehdi Torabi 57), Karim Ansarifard (Ashkan Dejagah 71), Masoud Shojaei (Omid Ebrahimi 68), Ehsan Haji Safi (Vahid Amiri 58), Mehdi Taremi (Saman Ghoddos 59); Sardar Azmoun (Reza Ghoochannejhad 80)

Portugal 2 Tunisia 2

The Euro 2016 winners were without a number of regulars, including Cristiano Ronaldo, for last night’s draw with Tunisia.

Lining up in a 4-3-3, Portugal went two goals ahead thanks to goals from AC Milan’s Andre Silva (Ricardo Quaresma assist) and Joao Mario, who fired home after a Bernardo Silva corner was headed towards the edge of the area.

But Tunisia proved they are made of stern stuff by coming back for a draw.

Anice Badri (Naim Sliti assist) notched their first before the break, while Fakhreddine Ben Youssef – on as a second-half substitute – grabbed the equaliser thanks to a Ali Maaloul assist.

In terms of friendlies, Portugal have two more (against Belgium and Algeria) before their Group B schedule gets underway. Meanwhile, Tunisia take on Turkey and Spain over the next fortnight.

Portugal XI: Lopes, Pereira, Pepe (Fonte 63), Dias, Guerreiro (Rui 45); Mario (Moutinho 80), Carvalho, Adrien Silva (Fernandes 63); Bernardo Silva (Guedes 72), Andre Silva, Quaresma

Tunisia XI: Hassen; Naguez, Benalouane, Meriah, Haddadi (Maaloul 45); Badri (Akaichi 87), Skhiri, Sassi, Sliti (Srarfi 76); Khaouri (Ben Youssef 45), Khalifa (Chaalali 67)

Italy 2 Saudi Arabia 1

A run of back-to-back wins over Algeria and Greece came to an end for Saudi Arabia last night as their hosts triumphed in Roberto Mancini’s first match in charge.

Lining up in a 4-2-3-1 set-up, the visitors went two goals behind before right winger Yahya Al Shehri fired a consolation midway through the second-half, with substitute Salem Al Dawsari supplying the assist.

The Saudis have two more friendlies left- against Peru and Germany – before kicking off the World Cup against hosts Russia on June 14.

Saudi Arabia XI: Al Owais; Al Shahrani, Omar Hawsawi (Hawsawi 90), Osama Hawsawi (Albulayhi 84), Al-Harbi; Ateef, Al Faraj (Al-Mogahwi 90); Al Shehri, Kanno Al Dawsari 45), Al Jassam; Aseri (Al Muwallad 69)

France 2 Republic of Ireland 0

Les Bleus kick-started their batch of pre-tournament friendlies with a win over Republic of Ireland last night.

Lining up in a midfield diamond formation, Didier Deschamps’ side went ahead when Olivier Giroud scored from a rebound after his initial header had been saved.

Liverpool target Nabil Fekir – handed a central support role – netted the second, with PSG’s Kylian Mbappe supplying the assist.

Big-hitters such as Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Ousmane Dembele earned minutes off the bench in the second period.

France have still to play Italy and United States before their World Cup gets underway.

France XI: Mandanda; Sidibe (Pavard 82), Rami, Umtiti (Kimpembe
64), Mendy (Hernandez 63); N’Zonzi; Tolisso (Pogba 77), Matuidi; Fekir (Griezmann 64); Mbappe (Dembele 77), Giroud

Mexico 0 Wales 0

Hugo Ayala and Chicharito were the only two players who started Mexico’s last friendly match – a 1-0 loss to Croatia in March – to retain their places.

Despite the numerous changes, the Mexicans were unable to find a way past Wayne Hennessey in a match that took place in California.

Having now failed to score in their last two, they’ll be hoping to find some form in their pair of remaining friendlies against Scotland and Denmark, given that their first group match is against Germany.

Mexico XI: Corona; Alvarez, Ayala, Alanis (Salcedo 45), Gallardo; Herrera (J dos Santos 61), Molina (Damm 45), Gutierrez (Fabian 74); Corona (G dos Santos 69, Chicharito (Peralta 59), Aquino

Double the chips. How about having 2 chips each just like the wildcard i.e., one set to be used before the January window?

I think the use of chips in the later part of the game has made it pretty boring as everyone (well on here) uses it at around the same time. If we had an extra set we will have more chances to use it in odd weeks. Yes, introduces more luck, but also more fun?

This agenda against Raheem Sterling is ridiculous. Media darling Harry Kane faced an ounce of this criticism and there was massive uproar that he's the 'national treasure' and needs to be protected and whatnot. In Kane's case the criticism was totally justified as it was his own fault for swearing on his daughter's life and claiming a goal that didn't belong to him.

One is being treated like dirt and getting ridiculed for doing nothing wrong, while the other who faced a couple of jokes for doing a daft thing is getting protected by the media and portrayed as the 'victim of bullying'. So why this double standard?

Yes. Journalism is pretty much dead at this stage, not just sports journalists. Replaced by 'media'. A cool-sounding name for lazy plagiarist bloggers, tweeters and some who call themselves journalists peddling, mostly, bad news stories to a gullible social media audience.

As I mentioned in the article, I think 6m mid is where he might be, though 5.5 would be cool.
Fpl tend to set one Midfielder from the promoted teams a tad higher - this was Ritchie, Ince and Knockaert last season.
Could well be that's the case with Sess.
A defender would probably be capped at 5.0 for a promoted player (see Tommy Smith).
However.. who knows. Maybe they'll break from that convention and give in to the hype!

I think you have a point there, more likely for him to cost 6m then like they did last season.
Even if it's just 0.5 difference, it may make him feel a little too expensive to own from gw1 before he proves his worth.

Decent read that. As someone who has watched considerably more than most of Sess I'd say you've done a better job of describing him than most articles. He is not the player that many think he is. The fact he was originally a no. 9 before being moved to LB then on to LW is why he is such a good finisher. He plays LW but far from a traditional winger as you say. He's a great finisher and even better at getting in good positions and reacting first.

But he's young and still has a lot to work on. He should be a midfielder and 6m+ would put me off a little to start the season with him. 5.5 would be very tempting.

Thanks mate, I tend to do some research around the player to learn from a blank slate rather than received wisdom, which is why our take sometimes differs from what you see elsewhere.

Think we'll see 6m mid for him as I said, and I'd probably opt for Jota over him at that level, but still of interest I'm sure to many managers 🙂

Obviously what it means to him is very personal and emotional and I know he's treated as a whipping boy by some parts of the media but use your brain Raheem, no need to give your enemies more excuses.

Tatoo is not finished yet, people jumping to conclusions too soon.
From what I've heard Raheem lost his dad to gun violence and maybe this tatoo will be some sort of tribute.
Finally we all free to express ourselves they way we want and if Raheem wants to have a personal tatoo on his body let him have it.

Hopefully there's some interest, although it won't really spike until the Maccies game is announced. Hopefully when it is another call out like this can be hulked to gauge proper interest.

Yeah I'll release something that'll hopefully become a HT around the 4th/5th to ask for applications and then if there's enough by the 14th it can go ahead.

I just wanted to point out Ramos locks Mos' right hand while the injury was inflicted on his left shoulder on that awkward landing. Think a lot of people missed that one. He could probably land differently without a lock but we'll never know.

Thoughts on this WC fantasy team?

    Griezmann - Lewandowski - Cavani
    Neymar - Rodriguez - Eriksen
    Marcelo - Hector - Trippier - Godin
    Lloris

    Thanks guys!

Wow, Neymar is a mid in this game? Interesting.

Looks like a fantastic first XI (although are you sure about Trippier? I think Walker is ahead of him so it all depends on the system Southgate uses) so I take it the bench is mostly fodder?

Slightly confused as to why my post about Ramos was deleted. I don't see what's wrong with saying that we would've reacted differently if a Liverpool player did it to help them win the CL, or that Real Madrid win at all costs?

I said 'You're a clown'. I think anyone who posts LOL on a forum is a clown though so nothing personal cos I'm an auld lad. As for football knowledge I was very wrong about that. You're spot on about Bolasie. A talented but lazy footballer still dining out on his outlier hat-trick. Needs to work harder to be more consistent.

The Telegraph game looks good. Pick 11 with 50m. 26 transfers for group games. Wildcard. I think it's 20 more transfers for knockout rounds.

My sources tell me Everton are close to signing Marco Silva as the next Everton boss and that could be great for fpl next season.
I wonder what little bargains can be found in the cheapo price bracket to help preserve the age old 343 strike attack formation line up?
A nice price drop for an 'fpl gold' Wally Theo Walcott looks on the cards, not to mention Gylfi Sigurdsson who I can see coming in at the bargain price of 7.5 maybe 8 tops. But one I can I see with real micro diff potential is Mr Adamola Lookman, who's been ripping it up in the Bundesliga by all accounts and will be as cheap as chips next season and no mistake.
It's still a long way to go and who knows who the manager will have in his plans, but one thing is for sure, Marco Silva's kamikaze 'we'll score one more than you' approach to football, should see some gems unearthed early doors and fixtures permitting, could give us that head start which has been so vital in recent seasons.

New community article - Red Lightning looks back on almost a decade's worth of data to see how well promoted players perform in the top flight.

An article I'd love to see would be one that looks at how important early season form is. It's something I'm never sure on. How often are those players that start FPL well the ones that carry on that way through the rest of the season? Do they often keep their form up?

Could be an interesting conclusion because I never know if I should be jumping on relatively unknown bandwagons from the first few GWs or assuming they won't last.

Why did you change your name from recognizable Jonty to generic Joe? Seems a strange move from an opportunistic point of view considering FPL is becoming bigger and bigger. Honest question.

Let's hope that Bolasie, will rediscover his pre-injury form.He 'll be a great (and cheap probably) FPL asset.

Joshua King in Norwegian media today says he thinks Howe isnt using him in his best position, that they've talked about it but that its not likely to change because none of the other strikers can play the 10 role.
Seems like he wont be a good fantasy asset next season barring massive shuffle up in the transfer window.
