World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Portugal

Our Group B team analysis continues with 2016 European Championship winners Portugal, who will be making a seventh World Cup appearance – their fifth in a row – this summer.

Portugal’s curtain-raiser is against Spain in Sochi on Friday June 15, with this 7pm encounter between the Iberian rivals likely to be crucial in determining who finishes as group winners.

A 1pm fixture against Morocco in Moscow follows five days later, before Portugal round off their group campaign on Monday June 25 by taking on Iran in Saransk in another 7pm kick-off.

Road to Qualification

After their unexpected success in France two years ago, Portugal were brought back down to earth with a bump in their opening UEFA Group B qualification group match against Switzerland in September 2016.

Two unanswered first-half goals condemned Fernando Santos to his first competitive defeat as national team manager, leaving Portugal to play catch-up against group leaders Switzerland for the rest of the campaign.

Nine successive wins, including a final-day 2-0 victory over the Swiss, was enough to see Portugal through as group winners on goal difference. Just three teams (Belgium, Germany and Spain) scored more goals than Portugal (32) in UEFA qualification, while only England and Spain conceded less than the Portuguese (four) in their ten group matches.

Most starts: Rui Patricio (10), Andre Silva (9), Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, Jose Fonte (8), Joao Mario, William Carvalho (7), Cedric Soares, Joao Moutinho (6), Raphael Guerreiro, Bernardo Silva (5)
Most goals: Cristiano Ronaldo (15), Andre Silva (9), William Carvalho (2)
Most assists: Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, Bernardo Silva (3), Raphael Guerreiro, Gelson Martins (2)

The Key Targets

There is only one place to start. At £8.2m, Cristiano Ronaldo is the joint-most expensive player on Fantasy iTeam’s World Cup game, alongside Lionel Messi. Ronaldo is also priced up at a joint-high £12.0m on McDonald’s FIFA, but many Fantasy managers will be undeterred by the cost.

Only Robert Lewandowski (16) scored more World Cup qualifying goals in Europe than Ronaldo (15), who also provided three assists for his team-mates. The 2017 Ballon d’Or winner registered 26 goals in 27 La Liga appearances this season, scoring on a further 15 occasions in the UEFA Champions League.

Portugal were rudderless without Ronaldo in the 2-0 loss to Switzerland in qualification, though, of course, also played 95 minutes of their 2016 European Championship final against France without their injured talisman.

Whether Santos opts for a 4-4-2, 4-1-3-2 or even 4-3-3 formation is immaterial to Ronaldo’s prospects: the 33-year-old captain will start up top, probably alongside Andre Silva (£7.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £9.0m on McDonald’s FIFA), and be afforded the freedom to drift from centre to wide left.

Andre Silva has had an indifferent debut season at AC Milan, scoring only twice in 24 Serie A appearances, but his record at international level is exemplary.

The 22-year-old forward, who has been strongly linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, scored nine goals in as many fixtures for Portugal during qualification, a tally which included a hat-trick against the Faroe Islands in October 2016. He also scored in last night’s 2-2 friendly draw against Tunisia.

Santos’ preference for a narrow 4-4-2 or variations thereof, such as a 4-1-3-2 or midfield diamond, means that Bernardo Silva (£6.7m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) operates in a different position for his national team than the one Fantasy managers are used to seeing him play at Manchester City.

Generally utilised by Pep Guardiola on the wide left or right of a front three, Silva will be forced to play a more withdrawn role for Portugal in a tight midfield quartet. Despite his unusual deployment, Silva still managed to supply three assists in five qualification appearances.

Man of the match in the Euro 2016 final, Pepe (£6.0m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) will once again be the rock of the Portuguese defence. At 35 years of age, Pepe’s best days are behind him, but his importance to the national team was illustrated in March’s friendly meeting with the Netherlands: without Pepe at centre-half, Portugal succumbed to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat.

No Portuguese defender played more fixtures than the former Real Madrid stopper in World Cup qualification.

Rui Patricio (£6.0m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a solid pair of hands and a cast-iron certainty to start in goal, having featured in all ten of Portugal’s qualification matches. The Sporting CP goalkeeper has also been linked with a move to Wolves this summer, though Napoli appear to have stolen a march in the race for his signature.

The Long Shots

Cedric Soares (£5.8m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a familiar name to Fantasy managers and one that is often coupled with the word “punt”. The Southampton defender seemingly has the nod over Leicester City’s new signing Ricardo Pereira at right-back, having started five of Portugal’s final six qualifying matches and playing all 120 minutes of his country’s 1-0 European Championship final win over France in 2016.

Width from the full-back positions is crucial to the Portuguese team, given Santos’ propensity to funnel his midfield through the centre. Soares supplied three assists in his final seven league appearances for Southampton this season, highlighting his strength as a creative outlet from defence.

Another erstwhile Premier League player, albeit one who only made four appearances for Chelsea in 2009, Ricardo Quaresma (£6.9m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is in the twilight of his career. At 34 years of age, the Besiktas winger will surely start Portugal’s opening group match on the bench and likely be an impact player at best. Should Portugal need to find goals in their fixtures against Iran and Morocco, however, Quaresma could see an increased amount of pitch time.

No Portugal player provided more assists in qualifying than the former Porto and Inter Milan wide-man (three), who was also the creator of both of Ronaldo’s stoppage-time goals in their country’s 2-1 friendly win over Egypt in March.

Areas to Avoid

Whoever lines up alongside Pepe in the centre of defence would seem to be an obvious weak spot. Jose Fonte and Bruno Alves (both £5.7m 0n Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m and £5.0m respectively on McDonald’s FIFA) have a combined age of 70 and now ply their trades in China and Scotland respectively. Fonte appears likely to get the nod, having started eight of Portugal’s qualification matches.

Overall, Portugal’s opening group fixture against in-form Spain would seemingly be one to avoid from a Fantasy perspective. Once that stern test is out of the way, matches against Morocco and Iran represent more appealing fixtures for Portugal supporters and Fantasy managers alike.

What's the lowest ever GW score by an individual player in FPL? Could it be Ingimarsson for Reading who conceded seven goals and scored an OG vs Pompey?

Forget him. Found a new leader. Vergini, conceded eight and an OG in that famous GW8.

I've found a new leader. Kieron Gibbs. Conceded six, red card (albeit mistaken identity) and just the one appearance point. -5!

Funnily enough Salah scored in that game.

Debuchy was the -4 came at a very bad time near the end of the 2013 season, was in top 20 overall when it happened, spoilt any chance of outright win

Gibbs is the most recent -5, going back to the 2011/12 season there were two others occurrences: Jonny Evans sent off in Man Utd's 6-1 defeat to Man City (23 Oct 2011) and Gael Givet sent off in Blackburn's 7-1 defeat to Arsenal (4 Feb 2012).

Fifa McDonalds Official World Cup Fantasy Rules - Assists

    http://fantasy.pre.fifa.com/en/rules

Does anyone know if this game will be similar to premier league fantasy in that assists are awarded for many scenarios such as drawing a pen and then the pen being converted. Or scoring off a blocked shot....

      "Earning a penalty** 2 points"

"Assists will be credited to a player on basis of the official statistics of a match as published on FIFA.com." - So I'm assuming scoring on rebounds doesn't give assists.

You reminded me of why I don't want to play the FIFA/UEFA fantasy games.

I think Hazard scored a goal where he dribbled past one or two men after a clean long pass from Kevin de Bruyne. All official statistics said an assist by Kevin de Bruyne, but the game ruled the goal as a solo goal and therefore no assist. That's the only time I've bothered to mail a complaint.

Sessegnon is hardly going to be an “under the radar” pick and reminds me of Knockhart from last year. Just younger with more potential.

He’s clearly going to be a 6.5 mid imo and that’s probably not good value.

If you're looking for value. I could see Cairney being priced at 5.5m because he's had injuries this season so his stats aren't special. But he is comfortably our best player and can get goals and assists.
Because he's captain and scored in the final though FPLight make him 6.0 and he's less appealing as a 4th mid then.

He is free to do whatever he pleases. But it wasn't the media that created this storm. It was him posting a pic on social media that was picked up by anti-gun protestors (specifically a mum's group that had lost their children to gun violence) who objected to it.

It's not like he is encouraging people to gun violence, it's a tattoo and it's personal. It was always going to provoke discussion but not in a way to make people hate the person.
Redknap and Piers Morgan's reaction to the subject is like Sterling did shoot someone with that gun.

The world is shallow. It has always been shallow and will always be shallow. If you get a gun tattoo people will automatically assume you are promoting guns.

If he had got a gun tattoo with a circle and line through it (like the road signs) then people would interpret it as no to guns.

You can argue that is not fair, but that is life.

Successive governments (Labour, Conservative, Coalition) for a number of years have led to the gap between rich and poor increasing:

              1) There will always be poor people as 'poorness' is a relative measure. I can have £1m and buy everything I can dream of, but if everyone else has £2m then I am 'poor' by that country's standards. The question for the people of the country is what do they want 'poor' to be like? That is not an easy question to answer when people are pressed on it

              2) Fundamentally politicians don't tackle the root cause of poverty - which is asset distribution. It is not redistributing income that leads to narrowing the gap between rich and poor, but redistributing assets as income is a function of your assets (including your own knowledge / skills). But can you imagine what would happen if you took assets away from people and gave them to others?

I play the telegraph version pumpkinhead. Im on the fiso forums but im kinda skeptical about posting it there, the way the majority play the telegraph version over there isnt really what i want to attract to the league (multiple team entries, block defenses and playing the odds from there) plus i made myself immensely unpopular regarding the whole kane vs stoke debacle (the terms and conditions for not awarding awarding were vague unlike fpl which are watertight).Iv been given the get go to post. I have a top 3 split (60%, 25%, 15%) £10 single entry league already set up im just sorta touting to see if there would be interest around these parts..

Ah i see. I hate the multiple teams ideas also and FISO I do like the place but it's full of TFF and Dream Team sharks so I unless it's fpl I'm usually wasting my time joining their leagues . Although I will probably start with a defensive block as that is my plan at least at the first gw . If your happy with that then I'll have a go.

Worth posting here for sure to gage intrest

Im not against the idea of blocks themselves, to each their own (not that i play that way myself, its too much of an all or nothing strategy which im not prepared to do if entering one team (iv enter 2 teams but thats just to enter more private leagues, both teams will be exactly the same players with the same transfers as one team can only join a maximum of 3 separate private leagues)), i just dont like the thought of hypothetically 1 person entering 100 teams and blocking all obvious defenses in different combinations that inevitably one or a few will hit. The thought of that one out of 100 hitting the jackpot in the league iv set up is kinda nauseating. If you fancy it mate or know anyone that wants to join by all means you are welcome to join and share. Its £10, max 1 entry per manager. The pin is 8144519 and passcode is 2222. Im gonna ask the telegraph if i can change the pot splits if we get more than 20 or 30 entrants. If more than 20 i reckon top 4 split and above 30 itll be top 5 if the telegraph allow me to change the splits and i the people that have already joined have no objections.

Sounds good to me mate. I'll put a team in then.

I don't like defensive blocks really for the same reasons you say . The problem is you either do well or fail miserably but if you don't block you end up somewhere in the middle. Most Sun and TFF leader boards are full of block defences at the start. I'll probably regret my Russia block after the first game any way

Good man, if you know anyone interested they are more than welcome too. Much prefer the idea of a good spread of prizes for more that enter, some of the leagues i entered last year the pot splits were atrocious and i say that as a beneficiary of some of them. One was £1600 pot 50% first 30% second and 10% each for starting 11 and golden boot. How the chairman came up with that split when he had so much in prize moneyto play with is beyond me. Im not buying the whole middle thing (unless you are in a fiso multiple entry league) although it does make it impossible to win for the reasons you outlined. The overall winner mentioned in his article how he block defensed utd at the beginning of last season. I finished 24th overall in the champions league game, 374th overall in the premier league game and won the three lions league they run every year and i didnt block defense in any version of the game. The max i had at any one time were 3 city defenders for around 2 months and it worked out disastrously so feeling you on russia. i think ill just go with akinfeev and smolov to start with. If ksa score with the way the team would be set up with cheaper defense and expensive attackers it might be harder to jump on the premium defenders from better sides if that plan fails, or at least a churn of transfers trying to address the balance.

You will be better putting a post up in the new article. I'm sure it will get hulked. I have to rely on internet cash leagues as not many I know play ff. If anyone asks though I will for sure.

I have a plan for the block which involves saving cash itb to make the step up to Uruguay them may be Spain. I not really sat down and planned too much yet but I'll need to as TFF with this many transfers requires a bit of planning.

I've got 6 Russia players in my initial draft which I haven't looked at since the game cams out. I must be crazy

I want to see forwards receive 2 points for any appearance next season.

Right now forwards in PL are too unlikely to start every game to be justified picking over attacking midfielders. By reducing the punishment of not playing 60+ minutes, forwards can be picked more often for their offensive threat, rather than being picked for being guaranteed game time. This change would also allow FPL to remove the 4.5 price tag for forwards, thus preventing teams from simply ignoring the 3rd striker spot entirely.

But to back to this post, what problem are you trying to solve? Just pick nailed on forwards and drop down to 2, 3rd slot admittedly was a pain

I disagree, I think you have more chance of a solid starting 9 than trying to pick a 7,8,11 or 10.

Not many teams have rotational strikers, more so those who score goals.

Strikers are basically nailed if they score goals. Midfielders get the rotation angst,

should 4.5 mid and 4.0 defs be removed to? thus preventing teams from simply ignoring their 5th mid and defender?

Appearance pts should be similar for all players.

Only thing that makes sense with regards to making strikers more viable is pricing them better.

      1. Ramboros

Forwards are priced higher than midfielders, who again are priced higher than defenders.

The way pricing works in FPL it does not matter how highly a player is priced, only how highly he is priced relative to other players in the same position. If you increase every forwards price by 5.0, and add 15.0 to the budget, the value of each forward would still be exactly the same. The existence of 4.5 forwards essentially means that every playing forward is priced 0.5 higher.

Take a look at the 4.5 forward category. It's an utter joke. Quaner is not a striker, but a winger. He's misclassified. More than half of the 4.5 forwards were added in the last 10 rounds of the season. McBurnie was only in the game because his loan didn't go through. These forwards are not Premier League players. They are players from the B team that's only been registered. Just make a proper 5.0 category with 10+ players like the lowest priced midfielders and defenders. If some options are awful then that's just how it is.

      2. Roosta
        • 6 Years

They should just make the third forward slot into a 'flex' slot, so your 15th player can be any position. That way experienced players can just pick 2 forwards, and casual players can still spend 35 million on their attack.

...havent been on here since the incident but I'm sure this debate has raged on before now haha, just my opinion as a football fan! See some of the rubbish on social media about Ramos/Salah incident though, uncalled for.

Any chance J King could be a mid in FPL next season?

He started 1 game as a striker this season.

Would appreciate thoughts/suggestions on this World Cup XI for group stage:

    Muslera
    Godin/Verane/Kimmich/Walker
    Eriksen/Mane/Samedov
    Suarez/Lewa/Griezmann

    Thanks.

You'd swear that he went out and bought an assault rifle and is demanding to take it with him to Russia 😉

Leo Messi with 3 goals and an assist in a 4-0 win in Argentina’s friendly tonight. Warming up for the WC.
Football owes Messi a World Cup.

For someone who has followed xG and xA stuff or even have lil bit of idea about it, are those numbers worth considering?

Of course, low xG means low chance of scoring.

Thats pretty obvious I guess 😛

From fantasy perspective, are they helpful in picking the right players? Does not scoring at expected rate means a player is poor?

Kane had more xG than Salah.
Sterling scored less than he should. Same with Jesus and Morata.
xG was 20 extra goals should have been scored this season.

Benteke was around 11 xG yet only scored 3.
Salah, Firmino, Mahrez and Vardy outscored their xG by quite a bit.

Looks like there is no conclusion, just like other stats where results can go either way 😮

Cant spot it tbh, all looks random to me, any clue? 😀

Likes of Benteke/Morata/Jesus are poor finisher or unlucky not to get more goals(underachievers)?
