The lack of Premier League football last weekend may have forced many into making their transfers early, but for anyone still clinging onto a free transfer for this Gameweek and mulling over a last minute swap, we’re about to muddy the waters even further by throwing a few curveballs at you. If you’re after a logical, carefully planned choice then look no further than the Scout Picks. The “Differentials” on the other hand are the balls out, wildcard picks that could prove to be a stroke of genius or a moment of insanity. They say it’s a fine line between the two, but hindsight is a wonderful thing…..

Gary Gardner

He may still be waiting for his first Premier League goal, but Gary Gardner has shown more than enough promise in his early career to merit his inclusion in the Differential picks this week. Arguably the most coveted of Villa’s Academy starlets, Gardner captained the Villa youth team during the 09/10 season, firing in 14 goals from central midfield in the first five months of the season before a serious knee injury ruled him out for the next year. After returning from injury in January 2010, Gardner continued where he left off, picking up another five goals for the reserves including two goals and two assists in a 10-1 thrashing of Arsenal, and this season Gardner has racked up a total of 13 goals for England U21’s, the Villa youth team and the reserves.

Moving up to the Premier League is obviously a big step but Gardner has more than held his own in his first couple of games for the senior team, and looks like an excellent prospect. As well as a great scoring record, Gardner is known as a bit of a free kick specialist, and also offers the future potential of penalties if he can establish himself fully into the first team. We can’t expect Mcleish to grant us that little bonus just yet, but seeing as Villa take on two of the leagues leakiest defences in Wigan and Blackburn next, an early punt could still pay dividends and his budget price of just 4.5 and low ownership of 0.1% could make him a great differential.

Papiss Cisse

Alan Pardew looks set to hand a first home start to Papiss Cisse this weekend, as Newcastle host Wolves. Both teams suffered five goal thrashings last time out, but the return of Yohan Cabaye, Ryan Taylor and Cheick Tiote means Pardew is able to field his strongest side, and with all due respect to Wolves, Newcastle should find it a lot easier going this weekend.

After such an impressive start to the season, overlooking Demba Ba and opting for his Senegalese strike partner would be a very bold choice. That said, it is only the presence of Ba that has prevented Cisse from being a lot more popular; Cisse actually has a better scoring record at international level and as the second top scorer in the Bundesliga last season, he looks like a very strong pick in his own right. With two home games up next, goals will surely fall to one or both strikers; priced at just 7.0 and with an ownership of just 1.2% compared to Ba’s 25.4%, Papiss Cisse would prove to be a huge differential should the goals go his way.

Mario Balotelli

The unpredictable nature of Mario Balotelli may put off the vast majority of Fantasy managers, but there is no denying the Italian’s explosive potential, and a home tie against Blackburn could pay huge dividends to anyone brave enough to take a punt. Sergio Aguero is the safe option of course, but over a third of all managers in the FPL game now own the Argentinian and if he were to have an off day, or (say it quietly) get rested, then the 1.3% of managers with Balotelli would be laughing all the way to the bank.

After sitting out the last three league fixtures through suspension, we’re putting our money on Balotelli making the starting lineup this week, but even if he is restricted to a late cameo, he’s proven more than capable of picking up points after coming off the bench; three of his nine league goals have come from appearances of 30 minutes or less. Priced at just 8.0, it’s got to be worth a pop hasn’t it?

ok folks, am calling it a night. Am not likely to be on again before deadlne. So may all your transfers, subs and captain choices be good ones (especially if they are the same as mine), that is unless you are Rebeldogg, in which case, may everything that can go wrong for you, go wrong :P.

Catch you all on the flipside ready for the return of the PL 😀

    Slight Dilemma

I have been without Bale since the WC(Yeah OOPS). I been on the edge of getting him in recent weeks but I can’t see him getting much more than the odd assist in these next five fixtures.

    Bale: ARS(A), MU(H), EVE(A), N/A ,CHE(A). vs Mata:

Worth getting in Mata next week fr the next few rather than Bale ❓

4pt hit this week or for free next week ❓

Yeah if I didn't already have Bale I wouldn't be in a rush to bring him in. Mata is a good move I reckon.
Not sure on a hit, depends who would be playing instead of him if you don't bring him in.

Ok, first off, you all know that if Chelsea beat Brum, they don't play week 29 either, right?

      Second:

      2,3,2,9, 2,3,3,3,2,13,2

That's Mata's form. Chelsea has been very poor lately, especially going forward. Bale is the top scoring midfielder in the league, in a very offensive side, and if you were smart you bought him cheap. Starting GW 31 Spurs don't have a difficult fixture for the rest of the year. You will want him back, and oyu will have to pay extra.

Please, anyone with a brain...........do not ditch Bale for fantasy poverty in Mata. I don't care how desperate you are for a differential: be smart, people.

Chelsea cover is needed? The Chelsea who failed to win or even score more than one goal against Wigan, Fulham, Nowrich, Villa, Swans, and Everton?

And we are to expect they will do better against Bolton, Brom, and Stoke?

          No...Chelsea cover is not needed.

That's GW 28 dude. We don't play that week.

We play in GW 27. RVP has liverpool away, Rooney has Spurs away. That is a push if there ever was one.

We play again GW 31. By then I will have Rooney and RVP, meaning it will be your aguero (SUN) against my RVP (qpr). I'll take those odds all day. I'll probably captain RVP that week, just because you won't have him.

All in all, good news for me, I think.

    Start Moses or Siggy?

Siggy - plays for a better team who create more chances. Not afraid to shoot and had a great record when under Rodgers at Reading. Stoke played in Europe on Thurs so may not be 100%. Downside is STO are historically tight at home and Swansea poor away.

Moses - playing a leaky AVL at home who are now without Richard Dunne. Moses likely to be involved if Wigan score, but his home form is atrocious.

I replied on the previous page btw.

Stoke played in Europe, but the majority of those that played won't be playing this week. So there won't be any post Europa hangover.

I watch the Villa week in week out and our defence is utterly pish. I can see Wigan scoring a few if they are on their game. I guarantee there will be goals.

Logic says Moses, but note the Swans have started scoring away from home and Stoke, many of whom were rested from the Europa League game, have gone on a really poor run of form and cleansheets haven't exactly blossomed at home like in previous seasons.

Villa will beat Wigan; I fancy the Swans to get something out of that Stoke game - go Siggy.

tough call, i guess the rule of thumb is to go with the home player.

ive got a feeling the swans can get something at stoke though, stoke are bang out of form and swansea are getting better on the road.

ive got a similar choice with dempsey and siggy.

im going with dempsey just because all my chasing rivals have him so dont want to risk it.

Moses if your leading, Siggy if your chasing

Who do you bench out of this front 8?

    Nani/Bale/Sigurdsson/Sessegnon/McLean
    RVP/Rooney/Ba

Stuck between Sigg and McLean as I fancy Swansea's system to come in to its own against Stoke, but every time I bench McClean he goes on a points haul.

Also, currently have (C) on Ba.

It doesn't help with decisions like this, but I still see Sessegnon as a near essential with Sunderlands current form, and McLean over Moses and his ilk is a no-brainer. Better to have a dilemma about an ABUNDANCE of points potential, right?

      NewMancini sums it up well

"Ok, first off, you all know that if Chelsea beat Brum, they don’t play week 29 either, right?

      Second:

      2,3,2,9, 2,3,3,3,2,13,2

That’s Mata’s form. Chelsea has been very poor lately, especially going forward. Bale is the top scoring midfielder in the league, in a very offensive side, and if you were smart you bought him cheap. Starting GW 31 Spurs don’t have a difficult fixture for the rest of the year. You will want him back, and oyu will have to pay extra.

Please, anyone with a brain………..do not ditch Bale for fantasy poverty in Mata. I don’t care how desperate you are for a differential: be smart, people."

If this year has taught me anything it is how inept AVB really is. He is too inept to put limits on him. Torres will probably start just as much, and Mata will still only have good fantasy scores occasionally. He is just way way too expensive when there at 6-10 guys cheaper than him who have scored similarly this year.

Don't get me wrong, i don't have any Chelsea players and am happy with that but i often think Mata could be good as he has the potential to score big when they finally click. Basically he is their only attacking threat at the moment. But, yes maybe a bit too expensive at the moment.

I'm debating the same thing. Dempsey has 3 goals in 12 away games this season and 0 assists. I was set on playing Dempsey because QPR are poor but I'm starting to get the McClean temptation that normally kicks in shortly before the deadline.

I just found something pretty interesting. Last year I remember around this time looking at the dream team and seeing that its scores were so low compared to most decent players' teams. This makes sense of course: the dream team doesn't get captains, or factor in fixtures to get the best of their players at the right time.

But this year is different. the Dream team is on 1444 points. Now, that wouldn't give you a great rank, but it would, at least, be very good. There are also enough cheapos that is your bench was four cheaper players, you could afford the dream team pretty easily. I just found this interesting considering it was far from true last year.

Yes, interesting. I think players have been more consistent this year (except maybe Rooney), therefore the same (Dream) team all season will score well. If i recall last year the top payers came in and out of form so the Dream team wouldn't have performed as well since it was all about buying and selling at the right time.

Agreed, I think that is exactly right. RVP was hurt the first half of the year, and lit it up during the second. Nani was amazing until the lat third of the year. Rooney was bad most of the year, but came on strong late. Same with Baines, and Dempsey, and even Lampard if I recall.

I never checked it before this year, but do bear in mind that the dreamteam is liable to change eg: Rooney/ Ba or Sess/ Nani.

the dream team could rise / fall by as much as 5 million every week.

In a general game, this is completely true imo. Differentials only really come into it for weekly matchups / H2H and then it's only the players that you both don't share.

Not much point having Verm as a differential when Raylor continues to get 4.5 ppg. .
