The lack of Premier League football last weekend may have forced many into making their transfers early, but for anyone still clinging onto a free transfer for this Gameweek and mulling over a last minute swap, we’re about to muddy the waters even further by throwing a few curveballs at you. If you’re after a logical, carefully planned choice then look no further than the Scout Picks. The “Differentials” on the other hand are the balls out, wildcard picks that could prove to be a stroke of genius or a moment of insanity. They say it’s a fine line between the two, but hindsight is a wonderful thing…..

Gary Gardner

He may still be waiting for his first Premier League goal, but Gary Gardner has shown more than enough promise in his early career to merit his inclusion in the Differential picks this week. Arguably the most coveted of Villa’s Academy starlets, Gardner captained the Villa youth team during the 09/10 season, firing in 14 goals from central midfield in the first five months of the season before a serious knee injury ruled him out for the next year. After returning from injury in January 2010, Gardner continued where he left off, picking up another five goals for the reserves including two goals and two assists in a 10-1 thrashing of Arsenal, and this season Gardner has racked up a total of 13 goals for England U21’s, the Villa youth team and the reserves.

Moving up to the Premier League is obviously a big step but Gardner has more than held his own in his first couple of games for the senior team, and looks like an excellent prospect. As well as a great scoring record, Gardner is known as a bit of a free kick specialist, and also offers the future potential of penalties if he can establish himself fully into the first team. We can’t expect Mcleish to grant us that little bonus just yet, but seeing as Villa take on two of the leagues leakiest defences in Wigan and Blackburn next, an early punt could still pay dividends and his budget price of just 4.5 and low ownership of 0.1% could make him a great differential.

Papiss Cisse

Alan Pardew looks set to hand a first home start to Papiss Cisse this weekend, as Newcastle host Wolves. Both teams suffered five goal thrashings last time out, but the return of Yohan Cabaye, Ryan Taylor and Cheick Tiote means Pardew is able to field his strongest side, and with all due respect to Wolves, Newcastle should find it a lot easier going this weekend.

After such an impressive start to the season, overlooking Demba Ba and opting for his Senegalese strike partner would be a very bold choice. That said, it is only the presence of Ba that has prevented Cisse from being a lot more popular; Cisse actually has a better scoring record at international level and as the second top scorer in the Bundesliga last season, he looks like a very strong pick in his own right. With two home games up next, goals will surely fall to one or both strikers; priced at just 7.0 and with an ownership of just 1.2% compared to Ba’s 25.4%, Papiss Cisse would prove to be a huge differential should the goals go his way.

Mario Balotelli

The unpredictable nature of Mario Balotelli may put off the vast majority of Fantasy managers, but there is no denying the Italian’s explosive potential, and a home tie against Blackburn could pay huge dividends to anyone brave enough to take a punt. Sergio Aguero is the safe option of course, but over a third of all managers in the FPL game now own the Argentinian and if he were to have an off day, or (say it quietly) get rested, then the 1.3% of managers with Balotelli would be laughing all the way to the bank.

After sitting out the last three league fixtures through suspension, we’re putting our money on Balotelli making the starting lineup this week, but even if he is restricted to a late cameo, he’s proven more than capable of picking up points after coming off the bench; three of his nine league goals have come from appearances of 30 minutes or less. Priced at just 8.0, it’s got to be worth a pop hasn’t it?

Anyone contemplating Ba as captain over Aguero, on the slight (if ever so slight) chance of Aguero not starting?

Repost because I am self-absorbed and I think this is interesting.

Last year I remember around this time looking at the dream team and seeing that its scores were so low compared to most decent players’ teams. This makes sense of course: the dream team doesn’t get captains, or factor in fixtures to get the best of their players at the right time.

But this year is different. the Dream team is on 1444 points. Now, that wouldn’t give you a great rank, but it would, at least, be very good. There are also enough cheaper players in the DT that if your bench was four cheapos, you could afford the dream team pretty easily. I just found this interesting considering it was far from true last year.

      Agree, will re-post my reply.

Yes, interesting. I think players have been more consistent this year (except maybe Rooney), therefore the same (Dream) team all season will score well. If i recall last year the top payers came in and out of form so the Dream team wouldn’t have performed as well since it was all about buying and selling at the right time. Eg RVP only got going in the second half, VDV in the first half, Drogba in the first 6 weeks etc

lol Just responded on the last page, citing a lot of those examples as well.

VDV, Nani Drogs, all good early, but faded

RVP, Rooney, Baines, Demps, Lampard all bad early, great at the end.

Evans is the only one to consider, there. Taiwo is the logical first sub. Don't fancy a cleanie for Kelly, eh? I guess I am probably exaggerating his quality. I just respect QPR so little right now.

      I like everything else.

I guess I am having a defensive dilemma as well. Playing Vorm this week, so should I go with Kelly or Caulker?

I like United to keep a clean sheet on Sunday. I've repeated this stat a few times already tonight (so apologies!) but Norwich have scored 1 in 270 minutes so far in the 3 home games against top 5 sides. Even that one was against the Arsenal who up until recently had the worst road defence in the league. Spurs and Chelsea both shut them out, i fancy United and City to do the same.

I think I like Kelly's odds over BAE this week. Could be crazy, though. As lame as it is, I think I like Yak over both BAE and Evans, just because Blackburn might get a cheeky peno. In general, I usually make it a rule not to bench peno takers: youre just asking for misery.

7.35. Your lack of value up front will make it difficult to bring in Wayne and we all know how well he plays toward the end of the season(great fixtures too). And i really think Dzeko should go. He looks very slow and ineffective and the fans hate him(i've been to a match). And with Tevez back in the picture i can see him slipping down the pecking order. Love Valencia and Yak.

Sounds good, but maybe wait and free up some cash for a Rooney transfer. Either option would be decent i think. Maybe next week, sess to McClean and Dzeko to Rooney? Your midfield is a tad heavy, you'll be benching a lot of value every week.

O yeah, keep Lindy for sure. Don't even think about getting rid until GW 28.

You'll be playing Krul anyway for the next two weeks, so why not wait and see if Lindy gets the shirt back when he returns? Sunderland have been strong, but why bench Krul when he has good fixtures?

If you get rid of Lindy, you'll just want to get Evans, so it will be two switches anyway for United defense, which might get without using a transfer at all.

Rest of my team is very strong does not need any transfer and I have 2FT this week.

I don't understand why all the Liverpool and Everton players are not red flagged due to them having no fixture this week. The precedent was set when players left for ACON.

Not that I really mind since we all know that they have no fixtures, but I feel sorry for the poor punters that are transferring them in based on ignorance.

It's this site which flags players as yellow or red on behalf of FPL towers, so what's going on here?

I like Ox but would not put him ahead of any of your other midfield players this week. Team is good. Maybe kelly for santon Fulum playing QPR. But you dont need to make any more transfers.

    evans komp simpso

    demps sess silva bale

    ba rvp dzeko

    valencia kelly caulker - mig

    2 free transfers

I have 2 free, decided to keep valencia (I think) but what to do with dezeko? [facepalm]

Play dezeko but run the risk of him not starting or having caulker or kelly coming in if he doesn't play. Either way, worst case 1 or 2 points. Best case (guess) 6 or 7.

Or valencia >> yaya, dzeko >> AN Other? If so who?

    or dzeko >> Balo (scared)

    or dzeko >> sturidge/wellbeck/???

or 6.5mil forward valencia >> mata

what about dzeko, rvp and valencia out Aguero, rooney, mclean in. For a hit or stagger it over two weeks.

valencia injured, dzeko not guranteed game time and rvp although very good but might be worth a punt his goals are going to dry up as arsenal are struggling. And rooney/aguero not a bad subsititue.

I agree with this. I think Kun is riskier.

Although I'm starting wonder if Kun really does have more 'reward' in him. It is clear Aguero is a way higher risk, so if its close on reward, Ba is smarter.

That's a toughie, Jin. City really don't have 3 straight good fixtures for the rest of the year after GW 28. Aguero out certainly for me. But Silva? I don't know. I gotta think I will hold on.

Yeah, too true. Despite their poor fixtures you would still expect MCY to score goals, so I'm a bit loathed to have no attacking coverage. I'll probably lose 2 from these 3 in GW28, so it comes down to which is best of:

            a) Kompany & Aguero -> JEvans & Rooney
            b) Silva & Aguero -> Valencia/Nani & Rooney

Yeah, if value wasn't an issue for me, I would still have a hard time having no offensive representation from the highest scoring side.

A is better there, I think.

You have Mata for the next three weeks: you can just get Valencia for him, after that.

Yep that would be my likely move in GW29, Mata -> either Valencia or Nani (if he starts showing some form). Would give me 12 starters even if the MCY vs CHE game gets called off and the other games don't get rescheduled in GW29....

I have Sturridge, but have done for a few weeks. It might not be worth losing a striker spot on him at the moment though. Mata would seem a good choice as long as he's continues to be used centrally. But midfield spots are valuable at the moment. I wouldn't worry too much about a lack of Chelsea for now.

      You want Balo over Dzeko.

Off the top of my head, here's a list of strikers that you want over Dzeko right now:

      Pizarro
      Sa
      Ba
      Pog
      Drog
      Campbell
      DJ Campbell
      Micheal Owen
      Balotelli
Tevez (I know he won't play, you would still be better off)
      Boselli
      Di Santo
      Holt all day long
      This list is too long...

Wouldn't surprise me if Kun is rested one of these 2 GWs, with the international friendly on 28th n having played 80 mins in the 2nd leg of Europa.

i'm actually captaining Rooney. I reckon he'll start, and if he doesn't I doubt he'll be in the bench so VC Ba steps in. What a plan... how can it go wrong....

what do you mean Rooney comes on for the last 5 minutes?

I've had Aguero all week, but I'm starting to lean that way, yes.

I just think even if both play 90, Ba could score just as much as Aguero, and Ba is nailed on to play.

But also consider this: Surely if Aguero doesn't start, he wont come on late unless its close. (and it has NO RIGHT to be close tomorrow) I almost think Ba as VC is smarter for that.

But he's come on late in games, even when they've been winning. Actually I reckon he'll start this gw and be benched for the following one after the travel for the intl friendly et al.

Reasonably confident about this GW - last time I said that I got my lowest score of the season (22). Ominous.

    Sorenson
    Kompany, Raylor, Simpson
    Silva, Mata, Dempsey, Moses
    RVP, Aguero(c), Ba(vc)

    Schwarzer, Siggy, Rangel, Caulker

I still say Mata gets very little these next 3 weeks, and will be outscored by Bale, but that is a very good team besides that.

Perhaps yeah, time will tell I guess! Super Dunny agrees with you also - we had a bet over the next 5 GWs - if Bale outscores Mata I have to change my grav to the Spurs team for the rest of the season!!!

He has to change his grav to the Burnley team for the rest of the season (he's a big Blackburn fan)...
