The 2017-18 season nostalgia picks:

A number of players made their way into my squad before the game opened, last season’s returns fresh in mind..

Andrew Robertson’s end of season form was painful to observe as a Virgil van Dijk owner. At 6.0 he is ready to take up the Marcos Alonso mantle of most desirable defensive option in my opinion.

Mo Salah. Not out of fear. For the joy of FPL points.

With Danny Rose progressing to the World Cup Semi-Finals, Ben Davies was always going to be my next defensive target. The defender served many of us well at the beginning of last season, with double-digit potential and rotation over the opening fixtures less of a concern, he’s a must for me. I am conscious that I held onto Davies too long last season – this year I have earmarked Ben Mendy as my exit strategy, as and when.

Similarly, for Sergio Aguero, an early World Cup exit promoted him to the top of my summer watchlist, the anticipation of Brazil reaching the latter stages and rendering Gabriel Jesus a late starter seemed too good to be true. Aguero was a player I brought in ‘early’ last season at the moment everybody else switched from Morata to Firmino, GW17. I held him all the way through to GW32 so am familiar with the rotational fear that accompanies waiting for a City team sheet. I don’t know if he will be a long term pick, or if I’ll shift to Aubameyang after a few weeks (one of my preferred choices before the fixtures were released), but he’s nailed into my GW1 squad for sure.

Marko Arnautovic is another player I earmarked for inclusion at the end of last season. He’s just a fun player to own.

Kenedy is the final player in this group. A player I was keen on bringing into my squad last season, but for numerous reasons, never got round to, and watched on enviously as he returned a brace two or three gameweeks later. My squad structure includes two 5.0m midfielders and despite poor opening fixtures, he’s a player I’m keen to rotate in and out of my starting XI.

The desirables:

With Manchester City’s outrageous fixture run GWs 2-7, doubling up on attack seems bordering on essential. Having opted for Sergio Aguero, I am keen to leave a third slot open for manoeuvre after one or two weeks, once the returning KDB and co. are back in the mix. Riyad Mahrez is the player I’ve chosen. He’s a player that I’ve felt inclined to ignore over the past two season’s since his well earned price hike following the title winning season. But his FPL returns for Leicester last season, 16pts more than Sane make him almost irresistible in the City lineup. De Bruyne may well end up being the long term hold (or a double up partner) but for now, Mahrez IN!

Christian Eriksen is my third premium midfielder and it is the disarray at Spurs that draws me to him. With Kane potentially making a late return to the first team post-WC, I’m expecting the goal-thirsty Denmark version of Eriksen to step up to the mark.

My final desirable is Josh King. Early drafts included Zaha in this spot, and there are one or two 6.5 forwards I wouldn’t completely rule out – Wood, Mitrovic. King’s end of season form was mildly reminiscent to that of the previous season. Early sound bites from King about being unhappy played out of position last season lead me to believe he is about to recapture something of that form.

The uncertainties:

James Tomkins was a Free-Hit player I owned for Blank-Gameweek-35 last season. A modest 6-point return betrayed his involvement on the day, Livescore kept me informed of his numerous efforts on goal – so close to being a Free Hit hero! However, with Aaron Wan-Biassaka providing the role of 4.0 budget pick, I do wonder if doubling on Palace defence is a little much…

Cedric Soares was another early pick, a player that has always flattered to deceive in FPL. I am concerned about Mark Hughes ability to muster defensive resolve in his back line, not to mention a tummy bug denting his preseason return, so this 4.5 slot is very much up for grabs.

James McArthur was a non-pick last season thanks to the kindly priced Luka Milivojevic. However his goal scoring heroics did not go unnoticed. The arrival of Kouyate (and potentially RLC) could be a concern with the midfield options available to Hodgson fairly numerous. Helder Costa, Ruben Neves and Tom Cairney are all side steps I’m considering.

The Goal keeper pair is something I’ve toyed with a little. Pre-price releases, Dubravka at 4.5 was pencilled in as a potential set and forget, but with the early fixture run, a 5.0 valuation and the arrival and modest pricing of Portugese legend Rui Patricio at Wolves, my head has been well and truly turned!

Tapping in to Sean Dyche’s backline is something that I’ve been conscious of tinkering with since the game opened. With the defensive options receiving a token 5.0m valuation across the board, I see Joe Hart (assuming he hasn’t been brought in as cover for Lindegard!) as a reasonable budget route into the Burnley backline for the short to medium term – a spell that includes a very enticing opening run of fixtures.

Conclusion

Thoughts? Suggestions? Where have I gone wrong, and where have I gone right? What do you suggest I change? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

Looks pretty good, really. Some will have an issue with no Salah, but this squad shows just how much you can do when you're not tied down by Salah's 13 mil.

Seriously feeling selection fatigue at this point. Iteration 1000 looks like this:

    McCarthy (Fabianski)
    Robertson - Bailly - Wan-Bissaka (Boly - Zanka)
    Salah - Sanchez - Ramsey - Maddison - Jota
    Auba - Tosun (Kamara)

I've really tried all kinds of different set ups (heavy mid, heavy up front, no Salah, etc.) and just can't seem to find one that *feels* right. And I'm not an early WCer, so I'll be stuck with my initial squad for a while. I would swap Sanchez for KDB once he's back; Ramsey could become Siggy; and Tosun could be shifted to either Arnie, Zaha, or King; so I think there is some flexibility. And I think Maddison and Jota are going to be the steals of the year.

Anyway, thoughts? (BTW, I'll be passing out thoughts on others' squads once I get done writing this...)

Boly, Wan-Bissaka, and Zanka rotate pretty well, so the question is who to get with 11.5. So the game is which 6.0 and which 5.5...

I just have from now till midnight to make my team. This is the first draft. Any suggestions? (I like to risk a bit)

    Patricio - Fabianski

    TAA - Cedric - Trippier - Luiz - 4M

    Salah - B Silva - Jota - Lucas Moura - 4.5M

    Firmino - Aguero - Tosun.

Mid is pretty weak outside of Salah, but you might be able to make some of that up with your FWDs. Is Trippier likely to start GW1? He could be good long term, but might not play GW1. What formation will you play, because I think that might affect some selections as well.

My first RMT this season, so any feedback gratefully received please.. I've gone for 3 defenders that should produce attacking returns, nice forwards, but mids are a bit weak. Can't have them all though? G2G or not?

    Ederson (Speroni)

    Aanholt Robertson Luiz (Peltier Daniels)

Salah (C) Schurrle Richarlison Bilva (Stephens)

    Aguero Firmino Arnie

    Cheers!

Could swap Firmino for a 7.0 (Zaha, Tosun, King, etc.) and invest a bit more in mid to balance it out. That said, Firmino is nice to have. Not sure about Luiz, too. He always seems to be risk.

So I made a team with Morata in it (very bold), because I don't like the look of having three 6.5-7.5's starting week in week out early stages. Have a buffer to do Morata --> Lacazette or Richarlison --> Mkhitaryan or Shaw --> Bellerin (the three weak links in the team)

    Foster
    Mendy Luiz TAA Shaw
    Salah Mane Richarlison
    Aguero Morata Arnie

    Bench: Fabianski WB Stephens Højbjerg/Odoi
    ITB: 0.5

    What would you change?

    A) Morata + Højbjerg --> King + Bilva
    B) Morata + Mane + Højbjerg --> Firmino + Bilva + Jota
    C) Nothing
    D) Something else

      De Gea - Hamer

      Robertson - Mendy - Kabasele - Bamba - Wan-Bissaka

Salah - Mane - Bernardo Silva - Richarlison - Oriol Romeu

      Aguero - Mitrovic - King

      Would you rather have:
      A) Cairney 5th mid (possibly starting over King in some games) + Peltier to rotate with Kabasele/AWB
      B) Romeu permabenched + Bamba (more likely to get BP) to rotate with Kabasele/AWB

I think Cairney 5th mid is fine, if someone is dropped you could get decent points off the bench instead of constant 2s.

But given your team, I would probably not opt for two 4.0 defenders unless you can save money elsewhere such as your GK.

I think arsenal could definitely score in those games but you might be right. Hold off for now. I'm planning early wildcard more than likely as well.

        A) King + PVA

        B) Zaha + 4.0

        In this team:

        ? - Mendy - Rob - 4.5 - WB
        Salah - Mane - Rich - BSilva - Stephens
        Arnie - Aguero - ?

Any thoughts to the best 4.5 def with this bunch?

Moura looked good pre season and should get a decent run inthe team with son going to asia games. plus moura is alot cheaper than the usual spurs picks e.g kane eriksen and dele... so gives decent value and covers spurs 🙂 not a bad punt imo

This team leaves 1 m in bank. Thinking it would be handy to keep to respond to Kane Hazard KDB when back? Is team gtg or is there an area where you think better to invest 1 m now?
