Our final Scout Notes from the opening weekend of the 2018/19 Premier League season analyses the Sunday tea-time match between Arsenal and Manchester City at the Emirates.

The reigning champions began their title defence with an impressive 2-0 win over Unai Emery’s side, with one name in particular attracting the attention – and subsequent investment – of many Fantasy managers.

Arsenal 0-2 Manchester City

  • Goals: Raheem Sterling (£11.0m), Bernardo Silva (£7.5m)
  • Assists: Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) x2

For the 60,000 Fantasy Premier League managers who benched Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) for Manchester City’s 2-0 win at the Emirates on Sunday, the match turned into a painful watch.

The French left-back delivered a superb performance that was Marcos Alonso-esque in its ambition, both impressing and infuriating his manager in equal measure and culminating with two assists, three bonus points and a clean sheet. Mendy’s total score of 15 points was the highest of any defender in Gameweek 1.

Mendy has already matched the total assist count of Fabian Delph (£5.5m) and Danilo (£5.5m) for last season, both of whom deputised at left-back in the Frenchman’s injury-enforced absence.

Pep Guardiola’s words after the match tempered Mendy’s appeal, suggesting that the City head coach would possibly seek to reign in the former Monaco man’s attacking instincts a little in future – though most of his beef seemed to be with Mendy’s prolific use of social media:

That is not good [when he is acting like a centre forward].

Sometimes you want to kill him. Sometimes you say, ‘Wow, what a player we have.’ He gives this extra energy with Kyle [Walker], helping the attack so consistently . . . Hopefully we can convince him to be calm and focus on what he has to do.

Kyle Walker (£6.5m), who has delivered six assists in each of his last two seasons, was as gung-ho as his opposite full-back at times, though his performance was more disciplined in its scope – the England defender at least stuck to the right flank, while Mendy persistently popped up in a central position.

Guardiola had set his team up in a 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 formation, with Fernandinho (£5.5m) the deepest of the three central midfielders alongside Ilkay Gundogan (£5.5m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.5m).  Guardiola had teased the prospect of a start for Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) in his press conference on Friday, but the Belgian midfielder had to make do with a half-hour cameo off the bench.

Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) did make a surprise start, however, but not in his customary right wing role. With Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) stationed ahead of Walker on his City league debut, Sterling was forced to patrol the opposite flank as Guardiola overlooked Leroy Sane (£9.5m) for their season opener.

Sane’s full pre-season with the league champions would ordinarily have seen him favourite to start ahead of Sterling, who only returned to training last Monday, but Guardiola’s cautionary words about the German over the summer were perhaps a clue that all is not completely well between the pair.

That Sterling impressed and scored from the left wing – cutting in from the flank and firing past an unsighted Petr Cech (£5.0m) for City’s opening goal – adds further doubt as to Sane’s short-term prospects of a start.

Sterling was only the seventh-most popular City midfield asset in FPL before kick-off, with his price hike, World Cup-affected pre-season and increased competition on the wing all contributing factors to his ownership of just 2.1%.

The England international quickly gave us a reminder of what he is capable of, however, registering more penalty box touches than any Premier League midfielder this weekend.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) led the line as expected for City, though the afternoon was a frustrating one for his owners – the Argentinean striker should have registered an attacking return just before Silva’s goal, wasting a two-on-one opportunity with De Bruyne only a square ball away from a tap-in.

With either one (or both) of Walker and Mendy advancing in such cavalier fashion, a fluid City resembled a 3-4-3 or even a Jorge Sampaoli-esque 2-3-5 at times and FPL managers have been quick to react to the Frenchman’s attacking performance in particular: Mendy has attracted well over 100,000 new owners since the Gameweek 1 deadline passed.

Mahrez did enough in his hour on the pitch to suggest he could be worth the £9.0m outlay, forcing Cech into a fine save from a free-kick and whistling another shot just wide of the Arsenal goalkeeper’s right-hand post. Mahrez took six corners for City too, though it has to be said that his prominence at set-piece duties was in part due to De Bruyne watching on from the bench. How the two will share dead-ball responsibilities when both are on the pitch remains to be seen.

Arsenal began the match with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) as their nominated striker, with Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) dropping to the bench and Mesut Ozil (£8.5m) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) flanking the Gabonese forward.

Aaron Ramsey (£7.5m) was handed a start in the midfield three, though the biggest surprise was Matteo Guendouzi (£4.5m) – who admittedly has had a fine pre-season for Unai Emery’s side – being preferred to the more experienced Lucas Torreira (£5.0m) in the engine room.

With Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m) and Nacho Monreal (£5.5m) missing through injury, FPL midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.5m) deputised in the back four – though the curse of the left-back slot struck again as the Arsenal youngster limped from the field just after half an hour to be replaced by the veteran Stephan Lichtsteiner (£5.0m).

Emery gave an update on Maitland-Niles’ injury afterwards and hinted that Monreal could feature at Stamford Bridge next weekend:

Today we are going to do the medical analysis with the doctor. Nacho is starting with the group, working yesterday and maybe he can come in, maybe, for the next match. I think every day is important to know how they are.

Emery’s insistence that Arsenal play out from the back made Cech’s inclusion in the starting line-up all the more surprising, given how he struggled with the ball at his feet – the experienced goalkeeper almost made a horrendous hash of one back-pass as he rolled the ball inches wide of his own post – and Bernd Leno‘s (£5.0m) showing in 2-0 win over Lazio last weekend.

Cech did, at least, make some fine saves to keep the scoreline respectable and Emery’s post-match comments suggested that the veteran shot-stopper is his current preferred option between the posts:

We want the competitiveness from the goalkeepers and also every player in the squad. The pre-season is the same opportunity, the same chances for the goalkeepers.

We spoke also Petr did a very good pre-season, also today I think he played good also. Also he has this experience to continue defending our goal.

Leno is starting with us, he’s working very well, he played well in pre-season. But he can wait to arrive in this moment.

Lacazette’s introduction early in the second half saw the Frenchman play up top and Aubameyang switch to the left flank, with Ozil dropping back to become the most advanced midfielder in the central three.

This set-up is one Emery has experimented with in pre-season, though it must be noted that the former Seville and Paris Saint-Germain manager fielded the same front three in his starting XI at the Emirates yesterday as he did when the Gunners met next weekend’s opponents Chelsea at the beginning of the month.

Lacazette did have a noticeable impact on Sunday though, registering more shots on goal and penalty box touches in 36 minutes than Aubameyang did over 90.

Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Cech; Bellerin, Sokratis, Mustafi, Maitland-Niles (Lichtsteiner 35′); Guendouzi, Xhaka (Torreira 70′), Ramsey (Lacazette 54′); Mkhitaryan, Ozil, Aubameyang

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy; Fernandinho, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva; Mahrez (De Bruyne 60′), Sterling (Sane 86)’, Aguero (Jesus 79′)

      Salah.

Think he might be a differential captain this week (By his standards) - I think a lot of knee jerkers would've done Salah > Mane to free up cash. Also most are probably drawn to City assets vs Huddersfield.

More or less, yeah. Seemed to work out ok.

Didn't have him for the first 6 weeks or so, then started skippering him. Finally skippering Mo later on when it became clear that he was effectively a £13m player who only cost £9.5m

Few questions I hope I can get some guidance on:

    1. Is Hamer likely to be Huddersfield's number 1? If so, what a piece of luck for those of us who accepted only one playing keeper and a cheapo

    2. Cairney to Neves or save FT? Currently planning to save as think 2FTs would be very useful going forwards and Cairney is pretty locked as first sub (Richarlison, Mkhitarian, BSilva, Mane, Firmino, Kun, Auba)

    3. Best mid term replacements for BSilva and Mkhi? Worried about Silva's starts once City start KDB and DSilva and Mkhi looked, frankly, dreadful (v an excellent opposition) yesterday. Thinking it might need a downgrade up top...

    Cheers all

I went with VvD as zero rotation risk. Thinking Robbo might have been the way to go (as long as you have someone who will play the odd game he does miss). Think they end the season with similar numbers, but VvD from more games. Can make the same argument for Mendy

      Hope that makes sense.

Benched Mendy for Holebas in the end. Was a bit annoyed yesterday but now come round to the thinking that I was blooming lucky that decision only resulted in a -2 swing - just happened to be that the matches were that way round.

But.... should I have benched Arnautovic for Mendy? Hindsight is great and all....

If you have a 6.0 defender, surely they start every week irrespective? They play for teams who don't concede many and most have real attacking threats

      1. I Member

A 7m attacker should start every week too though. In the future I'd avoid benching headaches like these, especially going into GW1.

Quite probably. I have avoided the issues of a mid-price player in any position so that I do not have to make these decisions (see my comment below for how I aim to set up). The result is that I have missed AWB's 12 point haul at the expense of Coleman's single point. But, given the choice again, I would make the same call. It saves me ruing missed returns from players who I perhaps should have started, but didn't

Totally see that, and he was in and out during the week - I just thought a few things in the end:

        - Arsenal likely to score a goal (going by previous opening day goalfests i thought perhaps 1-3 or 2-4... perhaps folly with new boss but there you go!)
        - MCI attacks probably to be focused down Kyle Walker side given Arsenal LWB issues.
        - RE Liverpool solidity - yes absolutely, but we had CB issues coming into this game (evidenced by Arnie's couple of chances...wasn't a barren afternoon for him...)
        - Purely on Holebas vs Mendy - Brighton lowest scorers away last season... just felt there was a higher chance of Jose getting that 6pt base. As a 1wk punt I thought it was worth it.

Fair enough, you considered it and made your decisions on that basis.

I guess it comes down to different styles. I have four bench players who are the cheapest playing options (Hamer*, AWB, Peltier, Cariney). I then have my XI who I plan to start each week. In defence, VvD will start every week, irrespective. I also have Coleman and Bertrand, who I may bench if they have a particularly daunting fixture while CPL/CAR have an appealing one. But I see a premium defender much like a premium any other position - I shelled out that cash to play them

*got lucky that he is a playing option

          1. Shatner's Bassoon
            • 7 Years

To be fair we've got v similar benches! (Hamer / AWB / Holebas - most weeks / Cairney).

My style is usually to play the expensive ones as well - just came down to the fact I had a 4.5 defender slot and wasn't loving Mendy's fixture (wrongly, it turns out!).

I suppose you could argue that I should have upgraded somewhere else by 0.5 so that I wouldn't give myself the benching headache, and given Holebas' slot to Peltier...

Still would only have been a 2pt swing though. Benching Aguero, King, Arnie or Eriksen for Mendy would have been ruddy genius. I would have demanded a spot on the Scoutcast for that!

Hindsight is great but Liverpool are extremely solid at home and have looked really good in pre season. Meanwhile WHU has an unsettled, ungelled squad. I would have played Mendy ahead of Arnie myself.

      1. Shatner's Bassoon
        • 7 Years

Totally fair enough, just always tough to bench that attacker. Maybe key to this was that I didn't see the Community Shield so wasn't absolutely up to speed on quite how involved Mendy was up top.

    4. Reedy
      • 15 Years
      7 years, 3 months ago

Arnie's a hard guy to bench but I'm pretty fixture-oriented, too much so perhaps when it comes to attackers, and yeah I'd have played Mendy over him. But for the same reasons I'd also have played Holebas over Mendy.

Now Mendy might become this year's Alonso, unbenchable due to attacking potential; but generally I don't have any problem with benching premium players if the situation calls for it.

If you don't need to use your transfer this week, don't.
To be able to use two transfers for free one week is way much better.
Play one of your bench options rather then waste the transfer to jump last weeks points.

Anyone else think Mina / Coleman will haul this week? Can't decide between the two. Coleman is the logical choice because of his position but feel like Mina might be the exception to the rule. His goal scoring stats are a joke. No doubt that he can do it in the prem too as most of his goals come from corners. Siggy > Mina anyone?

6 points on saturday, 80 by sunday! So glad I didn't knee jerk!

I expect prices will start changing 2:50am saturday morning, hoping to hold onto my transfer this week.

90% sure I'm going to save my transfer after an excellent GW1 but still interested to know what you lot think.

    Patricio
    Mendy, Robertson, van Aanholt
    Salah, Mane, Bernardo Silva, Richarlison
    Aguero, Zaha, King

    Hamer; Peltier, Stephens, Wan-Bissaka.

    0.5 ITB

    Best use of my FT?

    A) Save (will give me much more flexibility come GW3)
    B) Stephens -> Neves (mainly for the price rises, don't see myself playing Neves often)
    C) King -> Tosun (think King deserves more time but Tosun looked decent and has some plum fixtures coming up)

Definitely not C. Bernard was signed on 150k a week & predominantly plays LW where Ricky plays. I suspect Ricky may occasionally play CF in place of Tosun.

      A for me.

You think? Silva said Bernard can play right, left or #10 so I assumed he'd be more of a threat to Sigurdsson and Walcott. Don't really see him moving Richarlison from his favoured position, especially after he just scored a brace, so Tosun looks safe to me.

Cheers for the feedback though. Something to think about.

is there an argument to be made for james milner being the most consistently brilliant english player in the prem league over the last 15 years? the guy just doesn't put a foot wrong -be it at Villa , City (where he was loved by the fans for his performances but just wasn't exotic enough for the managers) and liverpool. Im not saying he is the most technically gifted and he doesnt shift shirts like the other flair players but in terms of match performances the rarely seems-if ever- to be a drop off..its just 7/10s, 8/10s.9/10s all the way, pretty much since the age of 16. we shouldn't just be calling him an 'unbelievable pro'. the guy is an unbelievable player. full stop.

"great pro"..thats the cliche that sticks to him though!...top assister in CL last season, if that was any other player people wouldn't shut up about it. i think he's so much more than the terms people always seem discuss him with.

Top player and unbelievable role model for youngsters, tee total. He'll be still at the same level till 36, making it a fantastic 20 years at the top.

you'll get a few crazies i'm sure... but it's madness imo. but I guess there's 2 ways of lucking at it:

      - it's early days, i'll have time to make it back

      - it's too early to be taking those kind of risks

    Ederson (stek)
    Robbo, Luiz, Peltier (Tomkins, AWB)
Salah (C), Hazard, Richarlison, Cairney (Chalobah)
    Aguero, Firmino, King

Sterling so ignored by everyone. He was an absolute beast against Arsenal. Good fixtures coming up.

KDB assist king but can't score much. Aguero goals king but doesn't assist or participate in the build up and will finish with 180 pts.

Sterling for me. Still only 23 and can only grow as a player. I'll find those 11m in any way that I can.
