Captains

Vote in the Captain Poll for Gameweek 2

With one round of the latest Fantasy Premier League season already in the history books, it’s time to start preparing for Gameweek 2.

Where better to start than with the all-important captain debate, which looks like it will be less clear-cut than it was in Gameweek 1.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) will obviously remain the favourite with his 54 percent ownership but his next fixture is arguably tougher than a home tie with a new-look West Ham side. In the final nine Gameweeks of 2018/19 the only outfit to keep more clean sheets than Crystal Palace was Liverpool themselves. Since James Tomkins (£4.5m) and Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) were paired together again the Eagles have been a difficult prospect to break down.

For those not in possession of Salah, there are other alternatives amongst his team-mates including Sunday’s brace-scoring midfielder Sadio Mané (£9.5m), left-back Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) who assisted and kept a clean sheet, and striker Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Manchester City’s options certainly win out when it comes to fixture difficulty as they host Huddersfield Town on Sunday afternoon. However, the fact that every player has now returned to the group since the World Cup the dreaded issue of rotation could cause some problems.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the most backed ownership-wise, in 32 percent of squads, but could be benched to allow Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) a first start of the season. Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) looks to be back in the conversation sooner than expected too, his seven-point haul in Gameweek 1 putting him on the captain radar, especially as his 2.5 percent ownership makes a potentially powerful differential option.

Just as Robertson may be considered for the captaincy, his Man City counter-part Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has forced his way into the conversation with 15 points scored against Arsenal from assisting both of his team’s goals.

Tottenham’s options have dragged themselves into the conversation after seeing off Newcastle on Saturday and preparing for a home match against newly-promoted Fulham. Harry Kane (£12.5m) may not have set the world on fire but with 31.1 percent ownership he should be considered by those in possession of him.

Elsewhere on the Spurs roster Gameweek 1 goalscorer Dele Alli (£9.0m) may be turned to as another differential option while Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) offers the more creative angle for the fixture.

Anyone brave enough to place their captain on a player from Chelsea v Arsenal have a few outside outside options. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) will be the obvious choice from the Gunners while Marcos Alonso‘s (£6.5m) performance against Huddersfield may have convinced some of his doubters. Don’t forget that Eden Hazard (£10.5m), backed by 11 percent, may alsio play a part in the fixture.

Make sure you watch our Captain video below and then vote in the poll underneath it. Why not tell us why you made your choice in the comments? We’ll be rounding off the debate later this week with another Captain Sensible article.

Already made my planned transfer of Sanchez to KDB saving that 0.5 from oblivion in the process

    Fabianski
    Pielta Vvd Mendy
    Salah Rich KDB Moura
    Arnie Aguero King

    R.P---Cairney--WB--Zanka

It sounds mad but I will captain KDB, if peps comments about their toughest times were games like Huddersfield where they played against banks of 4&5 , he will probably overload the front

Meaning there could be a big haul for the midfielders in terms of assists, KDB could also be a diff for the first time lmao , since alot of people will jump on sterling or get in sane

    My two cents anyway

Sounds logical, but were you not tempted by finding an extra £0.5m for Sterling?

SUPER tempted as he looked suprisingly sharp too, but then since Emery went with a suprisng line up, I can't overlook it. He committed to one experienced DM in xhaka and Ramsey was always roaming forward

I felt arsenal left gaps exposed for the midfield to feed the wingers in

With Huddersfield they won't exactly go for it like arsenal suprisngly did with their line up . City will probably steamroll them but I reckon the wingers will have a harder time

          I'm thinking the opposite.

With a bus parked, creative midfielders are the ones having a hard time finding space. It's the dribblers that make things happen, hence Sterling.

For me a must have even if Rose stays and he misses the odd game. He’s quite clearly first choice and Poch seems a bit fed up by Rose. He'll be up there with Robbo and Mendy at the end of the season.

Bavies has been poor in pre-season and against Newcastle. Doubt Poch would want to sell Rose without any good back-up.

Even if Rose is sold, due to the excess energy required for the role under Poch, Bavies could still be rotated around Champions League time

^Disagree. He was poor against Girona playing CB with a bunch of kids. He was pretty good before that and was fine in the Newcastle game, without ripping up trees.

He's nailed on first choice and will play 80%+ games.

If Rose goes, you'll see very little rotation of Davies outside the odd Kyle Walker-Peters game around CL.

Davies' returns depend much more on the formation we play rather than whether Rose stays.

    What to do with Sanchez?

Do I leave for the week and save transfer,(have Jota to think about too). Could swap for KDB or Mane, although missed his price rise. Also considering Ali as differential.

    1. Gol D Roger
      • 9 Years
      5 years, 7 months ago

I went with KDB from sanchez for two reasons:

      • A must have before price increase
      • better fixture
      • saves 0.5 for a future switch elsewhere

      1. willl
        • 8 Years

He is -10 on fpl stats at the moment.

You can save the 0.5 next week as well.

    2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

I’m 70/30 for selling him for KDB.

I just wanted him as a punt for the Leicester game when he looked like he was guaranteed a role up front, on pens, against a lecisterbteam without Vardy & Maguire (look how that worked lol), and he was a good placeholder for KDB.

Now that Kaku is back, I want him out of my team. KDB also has a superb fixture & looks to be back earlier than planned.

So all signs pointing to selling for KDB. The only nagging doubt is could Sanchez poach a brace v Brighton, as I think that’s what he needs to outscore KDB this week, and waiting one more week does give the luxury of 2x FT’s should city fail to hockey Huddersfield.

      1. Shatner's Bassoon
        • 5 Years

I've got to keep him as went for the triple City [Bilva/Aguero/Mendy]. So would be -4 to switch him out.

Considering waiting a week then downgrading Bilva to go Sanchez -> Sterling.

Decision made for me, so let's hope for a brace. But he's on serious borrowed time.

Thanks guys, really annoyed that I went with Sanchez and Jota over mane and b Silva. Dam me for being a mavrick rather than going with the masses.
Thinking I'd be holding onto Sanchez in the hope that he plays like he did for arsenal, but honestly do we think that will ever happen at utd.
It's just whether I give him one more chance. Obviously if he looks like dropping it'll force my hand and I'll swap for KDB I think, seems best option. Trying to stop myself rage transferring in Mane!

How are people fitting in Arsenal for the mother of all fixture changes?

With a lot of us maxed out on City and Liverpool, it’s going to be difficult surely?

Most (if not all) of the Arsenal defence is 5.5.
Miki is relatively easy but a lot of competition and (potential) form in that bracket.
Laca potentially not nailed, Aub expensive.

All looks a bit tricky unless you are happy to ditch Salah after Brighton at home.

Not suggesting that, but let’s say that Mane is outscoring and Salah ticks along.

For me Salah, King and Cedric can turn to Miki, Aub, and 6.0 defender. Doesn’t look terrible.

I already planned to switch from Aguero to auba after this week

To ensure this, I gambled auba wouldn't do well in his opening two (so price doesn't change drastically)

      And had sanchez in midfield

That way this week swap from sanchez to kdb save 0.5 then sell Aguero to auba for the better fixtures

Ozil is a good shout, it's early das but it seems emery will go attacking

All depends on the formation, I have a sneaky feeling that he could go ultra offensive against the smaller teams and have the big 4 up front and Ramsey / Torerria in the midfield.

Pre season, I was looking at De Gea -> Leno for GW3 but Cech starting threw that up in the air.

Also despite good fixtures, it's still a new manager and system so not 100% sure how good Arsenal actually are. If Aguero blanks again against Huddersfield then will probably swap him to Aubameyang or Lacazette.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Yeh, I stupidly went with Leno. As Hamer came off my bench for a glorious one point and is on for a hammering GW2 I had to make an emergency transfer to get Pickford in for Leno. That leaves me with Lacazette, whom I'm okay to keep as a starter as I think Emery will note the better second-half performance when he was on and central.

Very good question. To cover this problem it would be nice to be able to show the whole team perhaps. But I cannot see myself selling Salah, Robbo, Mané or Mendy. Bilva and Kun are question marks and rotation fears. In defence I have Davies perhaps to downgrade and then King or Austin to Kamara is a possibility. Kun > Auba is a possibility also, but Ramsey was not fielded even for 60 mins and made idiotic move by just kicking the ball away from the field while attacking and without pressure.

Exactly, it’s hard to drop players that have just scored 90+, for a player that had no form.

Partially hoping for Bernardo Silva to lose his spot so an easy sideways move can be made.

Jota picked up an assist, that's good enough for me.

Gross didn't get started for a few games last season.

          Be patient.

Bilva, Mendy, Bellerin, Ramsey, Mkhi, Luiz, Alonso, Azpi, Willian, Pedro all available for 7.5 or less?

Ozil, Morata, Laca, Mahrez, Sané all come into equation if you go up to 9.5

He was fixture proof last season (United the only big side he didn’t score against) and his price would probably have risen by then.

You could still sell but just some things to keep in mind.

Very impressive as well, I’m particularly please with Jimenez as everyone has been talking up the mids at wolves but he’s gone under the radar as a £5.5m main striker from a hyped team.

As you say, it’s very overrated, I’m certain I got more in GW1 this year than I did when used in the doubles last year! Good luck to you too!

I like this idea. Also possible to play it week after 1st WC. BB in DGW is a lot of hassle and potentially distorting other (good) plans, takes up £ etc.

That’s basically my thinking, too much hassle getting 15 DGW players with the budget, rather have a super strong DGW XI

Basically it’s because I had albrighton last year and he just boned my team big-time!

Well a blank game week would be worse at least?

I think the free hand you have means you can pick XV nailed players and play them that week, rather setting up and waiting a week before playing. It then removes that potential distraction for the whole season, my squad will be lean and focussed going forward.

Any good score requires some luck but it’s not like I had Kanté and Jorginho on my bench that no one would seriously expect returns from.

I agree that in isolation a DGW does make more sense but it messes with your team for weeks either side, reduces the money on your starting XI and there is always a chances of injuries between WC and B.B. or rotation meaning you get only one game anyway.

Those were the reason behind my decision, that and in all previous season I remember benching at least one CS

Id look at the RMT tool to advise, like anything you gamble on, its always possible it pays off, but my mantra has always been go with the obvious.

I will be doing it on a DGW again (probably 37), but the beauty of fantasy football is that the "correct" decision doesn't always get you the points - 40% skill, 60% luck

Like the point about "having wc and BB at the same time". But i dont Get your point about playing it later reduces the money in your side.... you had bego, tomkins, jimenez and king on your bench. Thats 21m! How much will be Stadheim on your bench next week?

This preseason was somewhat of a wonder with a lot of 4.0s available in D. My guess is that most managers will have 16-5-18m on their bench. This leads me to believe that you'll maybe end up spending 2-3 transfers to get more money in to your XI, or maybe go alonger period with rotating players far above base cost. This might diminish the value you got from that early BB. But i might be wrong, you might be looking at an early wc aswell?

It’s more specifically at the DGW phase, saving a few million from the bench there and I might afford better premium players in the starting XI.

I’ve pretty much accepted I’ll make a few transfers early doors so I don’t mind having a few downgrade options on the bench rather than potentially downgrading a starter I would rather keep.

You got lucky - it could have been much less.

The average Bench Boost for GW1 only beat the average Normal Team by 8 points for the first 10,000 ids and by 4.4 points overall.

        1. Majestic Chanka

Undoubtedly I did have a huge chunk of luck (as someone else said the game is more than 50% luck) but I also think my bench were good picks with a good chance of getting points.

I didn’t realise the actual difference figures were so low, given the mass AWB/Neves benching.

Funnily enough I don’t feel particularly lucky though as I had Wilson rather than King and AWB rather than Tomkins in my team for so much of pre-season before late switches to follow the consensus on here.

If I hadn’t made those changes and a similar switch of Davies/Eriksen in for Shaw/Sanchez I’d have been No. 1 in the world!

I know those are super first world problems, even in the context of FPL and I have definitely peaked already but I feel the strategy is sound when correctly applied.

Wan-Bissaka was owned by 59.6% of the first 10,000 ids and benched by 52.2% of them, but only 0.7% of them played their Bench Boost.
Overall, Wan-Bissaka's ownership was owned by about 15.4% (it has now risen to 19.6%) and benched by 10.9% of them, but only 1.9% played their Bench Boost.
Many of those who played their Bench Boost may not have owned Wan-Bissaka.

            See https://fpldiscovery.wordpress.com/2018/08/10/18-19-gw1-team-selection-and-stats/

We were all lucky that GW1 was an unexpectedly high-scoring game-week, but none of us expected Wan-Bissaka to do quite as well as he did - that's why most of us benched him.
The chances were that it would be a far lower-scoring game-week, and that the bench scores would have been rather lower.
The chances of a big bench score are greater in a DGW, but that may involve weakening your starting eleven in order to strengthen the bench and may also have an effect onother game-weeks, so it isn't entirely clear whether it is better to play Bench Boost in a DGW or some other time when your bench looks strong and has favourable fixtures.

The stats are very interesting, when you say first 10000 id’s is that the first 10000 to register rather than current top 10k?

I think your last paragraph is a pretty perfect summation, for me there was the two fold benefit of initial points boost and removing the over-focus on the bench boost in DGW that I suffered from last year.

From GW 3 could it be a viable strategy to slot WB in as a 3rd/4th defender for Palace's great fixtures and free up some cash by getting a 2nd/3rd 4m defender and getting an extra premium player in the starting 11

See my question above mate, considering the same. It would allow me to swap out PVA for an alternative premium defender or use the funds elsewhere! As much as I love PVA, AWB could be the better choice at the price!

Wouldn't swap PVA with those fixtures, he will be excellent value for 5.5. I'm considering getting him in a 4-4-2 in gw3/4 and double up on palace defence.

Who to captain this weekend - Salah or Aguero or possibly punt on someone else?
Also who are the best premium forward options. Kane and Lukaku could take a while to start firing while Aguero / Auba / Laca didn’t look great in GW1.

A possible question/discussion topic - is it time to hold our hands up & admit the forward is dying out as anything other than a cheap FPL option?

I think it’s been on the cards now for a few seasons, but it looks like fullbacks & OOP midfielders are so heavily favoured by the points system that a 4-5-1 with a cheap striker should become template as the season wears on.

Perhaps an analysis of fullbacks & OOP midfielders vs. Forwards scoring over last 2,3 ,4 seasons?

      1. Four Hit Wonder
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 7 months ago

This. We need a proper analysis that would tell us if it's even worth fielding a forward who isn't scoring 25+ goals in a season. But even that kind of player (Kane) was outscored in FPL by the mid who assisted to him (Eriksen), for 3.0m less.

And in the 6.0-8.0 price bracket it gets even worse for forwards when compared to midfielders.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          5 years, 7 months ago

Yep agree - Kane got 29 league goals last year for 217 points... what more can he do? Score 40 goals? To get an extra 50 points and be just creeping over the 250 mark?

Evidence of the position being penalised by the scoring system? Or maybe not penalised, just not as well rewarded.

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years

If they gave forwards 5 points for a goal it might be interesting to see equivalent scores, although that may be extreme, and I’m not really in favour of any more changes to the game

            • 7 Years
            5 years, 7 months ago

He got only 217 points because of a lack of assists, an abysmal 2. This is FPL, you have to look at goals, assists and baps, not just goals.

Kane always gets a low amount of assists, as an out and out striker who relies on service, his best being 7. But Aguero and Auba chip in with more assists than him. Compare their PPMs and there’s a huge difference. Kane is overpriced I know, but not all of them are.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              5 years, 7 months ago

Hmmmm, I’m not so sure. He got a total 31 goals/assists... even if you bumped him up to 40 total, he still wouldn’t be on mega points. Obviously if he got 15 extra assists and maintained his goals, that would bump him up to above 250 points, maybe 260 ish. But then you’re then getting into the realms of him generating 50 goals/assists in a season to break his 250/260 barrier, is 50 goals/assists a realistic expectation of any striker?

Even in Kun’s best season, he scored nearly the same amount of goals as Kane did last year (26 vs. 29) and got 10 assists, yet got 1 point less at 216 for the season. Kun has never broke the 225 points barrier in 7 seasons of trying, let alone 250.

I do think the FPL striker overall is dying out as anything other than a cheap value option, or possibly a Hokey strategy of trying to time their selection in your team to coincide with their 10+ point gameweeks/hattricks etc which they will inevitably pop up with from time to time. Not impossible, but possibly not optimal either.

              1. Cok3y5murf
                • 7 Years
                5 years, 7 months ago

In Kun's best season, he played 2532 minutes. That's 542 lesser than Kane's minutes last season. So he missed out on roughly 10 appearance points. 216 points from 2532 minutes is much better value than 217 points from 3074 minutes. You're also comparing them like they're the same price. Kane is 1.5m more. I already agreed with you that Kane is overpriced.

Kun has never broken that barrier because he's very injury prone and misses games. Now he's injury as well as rotation prone. The injury isn't a problem because we can transfer him out. As for rotation, it's not for everyone, and that's your choice.

But despite rotation, Kun scored 169 points from 1960 minutes last season - 7.76 points per 90 mins (11m)
                Kane scored 217 from 3074 minutes - 6.35 points per 90 mins (12.5m)

Now who looks value? Kun or Auba at 11m don't need to get 250 points to be good value. Kane at 12.5m does.

Auba's numbers are similar to Kun's as well, and he doesn't get rotated.

In conclusion, Kane is overpriced. Auba and Kun aren't.

It will be interesting to see how it works out.

But either way, in response to the original point, it sounds like you have a very firm stance that the striker is not dying out as an FPL option, and that elite strikers (specifically Kun & Auba) offer every bit as much value as fullbacks & midfielders?

Not exactly, I just think every season is different.

In 16/17, we had so many striker options that were firing. Lukaku (9m), Kane (11m), Diego Costa (9m), Ibra (11.5m). May be slightly off on Costa's price but the rest are right 🙂

Last season, there was hardly anyone. It was just Kane. Firmino on and off. Vardy a bit towards the end. Aguero a bit here and there but most of us didn't get him because of Sterling's better output and bargain price.

So every season is different. It may not turn out the way it did last year. I still think a 11m player isn't worth it if you aren't really planning to captain him, so if you're not planning on captaining Kun or Auba in the near future, I think you're better off getting cheaper City or Arsenal mids. Full backs and midfielders are obviously better value but you won't captain most of them. Unless a bargain freak like Sterling or Salah last season emerges.

Way too soon to draw any conclusions for this season, this was just one week and there are seemingly more good options this season compared to last season.

In general though, I agree. Cheap strikers got a price hike after the 15/16 season when Ighalo (5.0), Vardy (6.0), Lukaku (8.0) etc. absolutely smashed it. I think one explanation is simply because the pool of strikers is so little. With a 4-3-3, we got only 1 striker option and possibly 3-4 options in midfield from each team. One solution is to reclassify 4-3-3 wingers such as Salah, Sanchez etc. as forwards.

Also, strikers get less points and should therefore be cheaper, not more expensive than mids. At least they are adapting to that trend now with Zaha, Arna and Firmino from last season. But new signings etc. are in general overpriced in my opinion (i.e Mitrovic).

Probably - but at some point Kane/Kun/Auba will bag a hatty and people will panic and pile in. Again its the case of getting on and off at the right time...

Up vote for this one. Maybe some bias here as I went 451 from the start. Can be a 541 too.
Yes would love some stats on this but the lack of points for forwards over the last few years plus their cost is enough evidence for me.
        I went Auba and 2 * 4.5
This can be seen as wasting .5 over a 4.0 bench defender but a playing forward who will give anything like decent returns will cost a lot more than a 5.0 to 6.0 defender.
I found it also enabled up to 8 outfield players from the top 6 and other formations tend to max out at 7.
Auba I see as an exception due to his potential for points, very much nailed and another option with Salah for C.

I've been discussing this in some of the community articles iv'e written on ffs. My guess is that "the best formation" will differ depending on whether the season offers any standout valuemids/attackers, and also, who the best captaincyoptions are.

Most have been happy playin 3-4-3 over the years, probably due to the fact that its basecost is 0.5 cheaper than the 4man D, and 1.0 cheaper than the 5 man D. Its also easier to spot a 4.5 mid, and maybe even a 4.0 def, getting regular playing time, than a 4.5 striker. One might have to Get to 5.5 to Get that assurance.

Almost all studies i've either done myself, or studies i've read by others, conclude with defenders giving more bang for your bucks. So at the very least one should consider spending a healthy sum on the 3 mandatory defenders in your XI. Whether you should slot another defender or two in to your formation really then depends on whether: A) you can get consistent pts from your cheap mids/attackers when they come off the bench, and B) whether theres any mids or attackers that can compete with the points of your added defender.

The funds have to go somewhere, and the bulk of it is not gonna end up in defence, regardless of if your playing 3-4or5 at the back. Realisticly, you might be able to spend 36m on 5 good defenders, and maybe 10?!? On gks. This leaves 54m to spend on the remainding 8 slots. As your gonna bench 3 of them, youll prob not spend more than 14m on those. This leaves 40 mill to be distributed across 5 players. Thats an average of 8.0m for each attacking postition. The average will be closer to 9m if you opt for a cheap 3manD, and somewhere inbetween for different variations. This means we either need to find 5-7 really great mids/attackers in this bracket, or try and find cheap options punching above their weight + expensive options living up to their promise, or maybe a combination of both.

Although the absolute monster season totals seems to be the territory of the mids (Salah, Lampard, Ronaldo), we've also seen Luiz suarez have a better ppg then all of them, the season he produced 295pts. Previous dreamteams also prove that mids tend to break the 200pts threshold more often than attackers, but it also varies a lot depending on the season. Aguero, rvp and Rooney might have been a very costly trio in 2011/2012, but they all broke 200, and the only other player to do so was Clint Dempsey, who was fearly cheap. Maybe three big strikers made more sense that season than it did last season.

Those gems punching about their weight might also come in all shapes and forms. 4.5 Anichebe, 5.0 Kane, 5.0 Alli, 5.5 Mahrez, 5.5 Austin, 6.5 Michu , 6.5 Vardy, 4.5 Sterling, were all players who punched so hard it made sense to spend big on several heavyhitters.

We dont know what this season is gonna be like, we can only make guesses. I personally believe that this season might vielser far better strikeroptions than last season did. A lot of good players, able to score a whole lot of goals, have gotten cheaper. At least 3 heavyhitters can realisticly look to score 30 goals (Auba, Kane, Kun) making them good choices atleast at different stages of the season. 3-4 9.0-9.5 options might Get 20+ (Auba, Laca, Firmino, Vardy), and a couple of 5.5-7.0s will also come with hopes of achieving the same.

I'm currently on 2 strikers and 3 at the back, but i can easily see myself playing both 4 defenders and 3 strikers later in the season. But first i'd atleast like to Get more than one gameweek worth of data before settling on a new formation.

      Hi Jonty,
Following the trend of the large % of players with lots of points on their bench this weekend (including Mark, who like me had 30pts sitting there). What do we think about making bench boost a retroactive chip? (To be played at any point until 1hr after final whistle on the last gameweek game day for example.)

Would change the way the chip is used, with managers having to decide whether to play it or save it each week if they get a good bench score (ala stick or twist).

In my opinion, NO chips should ever be retroactive.

This game is about guessing the players that will give you the most points and retroactive chips will undermine that whole idea.

Well the logistics of it could be ironed out, maybe it could be up to 24hrs after for example. Main point of the post is that you'd have a chip that could be used after the GW, and a different way to play this one.

But this was the first time I was so high in the rank and didn't want to take any risks. Could have been an even better result if I didn't also block the likes of Ulloa etc...

He'll be regretting it but he played the defenders he thought were most likely to get a clean sheet. A lot of people thought Arsenal would score, I did the same thing, played my home defenders.

Having had a cracking start to the season (129 points) and having used bench boost I'm now considering freeing up 3m by ditching two of my 5.5m rated defenders for 4m options. It will still leave me with Robertson, Mendy and Wan-Bissaka as my starting three. My thinking is after GW 5 or 6 I'll be able to swap out one of my cheaper option strikers for one of the premium strikers. Question is, do we think it's worth having the premium striker for the weakened defensive bench options?

One week isn't enough to go on, but before the season started, I'd have advocated going big in midfield. If your money saved in defence is invested in prime midfielders rather than a striker, I reckon you'd be better off.

Enjoyed the video of you and David discussing captaincy, but I didn't see much discussion of other City options apart from Aguero. Mendy and Silva seem potentially good options to me as they appear the most nailed attacking options in their side for this week.

Has Chelsea's performance against Huddersfield (Granted it was Huddersfield) given you food for thought?

Alonso showing that he can still return in the new formation, whilst Azpi on the other side looking like he won't be worth 6.5. An intriguing midfield situation with Kante, Jorginho and the incoming Kovacic offering potential value (Or just fools gold?), plus Hazard and Willian showing that they could be excellent options.

        - Are Palace really that solid at the back? They just conceded six shots on target against a promoted side. Are they flattering to deceive?

        - With no signings in the summer, a new stadium and rumours circulating about a 100m sale of Eriksen in the next window, Spurs are clearly being put in the shop window. This probably means that they are aiming for CL qualification and won't be challenging for the title.

What does this mean for Spurs assets this season? Are they going to tread water and not live up to their potential?

Palace defence is average - but cheap.
I got W-B cos he's a nailed on 4m defender - needless to say, he was sat on my bench 🙁
Tomkins at 4.5 is the best value for that price.

You could spin the Spurs squad around and say they know each other better than any squad with newcomers. They were never going to challenge City anyway, or win The Champers League. They'll prioritise the domestic cups. No reason to say they won't have a fine PL campaign though.

Fair points, and yes I agree that Tomps is the best 4.5 bar none.

The Spurs thing - I dunno, the club would be worth way more with a CL campaign to come. For that reason I think they will throw the cups and concentrate on the league, which is fine, but they won't bust a hump to try and chase the leaders. I can see them having an average season to be honest.

Fulham were really good for large parts of the game and denied a stonewall penalty. It was a lucky clean sheet but cheap price and attacking returns potential make them good place holders as 3rd / 4th defender all season who (like this week) will return an occasional haul.

As a Schlupp and AWB owner I watched the Palace game in constant fear. Fulham were far more threatening than I expected, Palace gave the ball away too much in their own half. Hennessey saved their arse. I think they got lucky against a team that couldn’t finish

Given the intense competition for places in the Man City attack and no injuries, there has to be a major threat of rotation over their sweet patch of games. Does this make owning both Mendy and Walker a viable tactic? They are pretty much nailed on, get clean sheet points and are a major offensive threat.

Mendy the best City option for captaincy?

With doubts over the nailed-ness of attacking options, could Mendy be a viable option to captain this week against HUD?

City conceded 14 goals at home last season, behind only Liverpool and Man U, whilst Huddersfield scored 12 goals away from home last season, only better than Brighton, West Brom and Swansea.

The numbers point to a very probable clean sheet and given how attacking Mendy was, attacking returns are also quite likely.

With more World cup returners than expected appearing in GW1, and more to come in GW2, what should be the transfer strategy? For those who drafted their teams for a WC@GW4/5, are they already in a dilemma to take on the likes of KDB, Hazard, Kane, Sterling or not? Similarly, for those who hoped to WC later, is GW2 too early or not to transfer out our temporary assets like Sanchez and jump on the above names?

Is it plausible that we need to own Alonso because against weaker teams, even in a back 4, he will be given license to get forward and vs good teams, he will be staying back and thus more likely to get defensive returns?

I'd be interested on the Scouts quick thoughts regarding the fantasy assist awarded to Sanchez? I'm a big fan of almost all goals having an assist attached to them but I do worry about FPL being consistent. I did notice there was no assist awarded for the Sturridge goal because the corner flicked off a opposition player first. This seems ok in isolation but when you compare it to the Sanchez "penalty win" it seems a bit unfair.

I wasn't impressed with Kane at the weekend.... and to be fair, the Golden Boot winner wasn't brilliant in the World Cup as daft as that sounds. Take away the penalties and the lucky heal goal for his hatty and there would be little to show for it. But that's exactly what he can do.
In a summer interview he did say he wanted to end the August drought and I'm convinced he scores against Fulham.

Are people willing to swap a premium midfielder for a 5m midfielder to get him in for a -4?

In my case, I put Sanchez in alongside Salah for that reason.

For the record I think I'm saving my FT but it's a niggle.

Early thoughts on what to do with salah in Gws 5-8?

Are there any players who didn’t get any points who looked promising from a fpl point of view?

What early bandwagons do you think will fail?

Who do you think are the best city midfielders or forwards to get, keeping in mind rotation, price, and points?

Do you think that having playing 4.0 defenders makes them better options as you can have defenders come off your bench and get points while still paying the bare minimum for them?

Would you rather have a premium mid or fwd if you already have salah?

Best 3 City players to own. Mendy is a definite for me for now. Also own Aguero but he needs to start firing asap to justify his place. Tempted by Sterling plus B Silva and these two plus Mendy are probably the three I'd pick currently. Intetested to hear the panel's thoughts.

I'd really like to get in Walker but not at the expense of the 3 I've got, Mendy, Kevin and Bilva.

What is the reason Mark is not on scoutcast as a host and why his overall presence on FFS seems to have diminished?

      77. Licious Lizard (delete acc)
          5 years, 7 months ago

You might want to make a hot topic about Mark’s new role on FFS.

I think we all support his decision in taking a step back from everything, but I think it would benefit everyone to make a HT, where it is mentioned. No further explanation than his last comment is needed of course.

A lot of people are asking about him and his new role.

          Best of luck to all.

Is Pereyra a serious option? According to BBC sport he has 5 goals in his last 5 home games and has either scored or assisted all of Watfords last 6 goals. Haven't seen too many people mention him though

Think he's gonna rise in price tonight so plenty of people are getting him in. He could score next week sure, but I look at Watford's upcoming fixtures and shy away in favour of Richarlison's fixtures.

With the exception of players who look like they are at risk of not starting .... isnt it madness to be using an unforced transfer in GW2? Surely nothing much has changed in a few days ?

The most burning question for me, something that started to happen towards the end of last season, was the name change from 'Jonty' to Joe. I'm now curious about the backstory.. have you outgrown Jonty like a boy is known as "Bobby" when young but progresses to "Robert"? Was it a nickname given that you always disliked (we saw and heard Andy apologize last week for calling you Jonty)? Where did "Jonty" come from? Joe+something? I can't get anything from Jo Lepper.

I have been thinking about this today - What are the merits of a wildcard for gwk 3 (after gwk2)
Now....hear me out here before deeming me crazy:-

Reason 1) Fixture turn for Arsenal and Chelsea - take advantage of the easier run of games where a lot of rivals will be waiting for a couple of gwks before acting
Reason 2) World cup stars such as Sterling are low ownership, which means that they will be differentials, let alone if you captain them.
Reason 3) The potential to make gains in terms of OR is far greater at the start of the game (obviously). If you take advantage of the easier fixtures for good teams, who may not be popular at the moment (such as arsenal and chelsea), then the improvement in terms of rank could be massive
Reason 4) You would have 2 FTs for the international break which would allow a mini-WC then regardless

I was so sure of going 5 at the back before GW 1. I know it's only 1 GW of info but straight away the signs are that 5 defenders wouldn't be a bad idea.

What are the scout teams thoughts on 5 at the back?

Have you considered disabling the live chat during the Scoutcasts?

It's honestly disgusting what's going on there. I know the mods are trying their best, but still...

What’s your advice when it comes to bench fodder - in my case Hamer, Peltier, Bednarek, Wan Bissaka, Chalobah and Kamara? I scored 98 this week thanks to AWB however Bednarek didn’t start. Do I ride it out with sensible rotation and bank the free transfer despite Bednarek’s lack of minutes or do I get someone else in for him or hold and bank two free transfers for GW3 (Aubameyang in mind...) I have 1.5 in the bank but that was mainly there to “upgrade” Mane, Aguero, Firmino, Bernardo Silva if needed going forward

With KdB out, is Bernardo Silva now a go-to option? For 7.5 you can also live with the odd bench appearance, no?

          XI GW2:

Patricio or Fabianski (I have King against WHU which leans me towards Patricio)
Peltier or Tomkins (easier fixture leans towards Peltier)

What's the score with the Leicester defence?
Evans just going to be a bench warmer?
Can't see him replacing Maguire or Morgan as one is their best defender and the other is the captain.
Morgan could therefore be a great pick with those fixtures at 4.5?

Wow didn’t realise sterling got zero baps. That’s pathetic.

Why all this talk about him all of a sudden at 11.0? He only outscored Mahrez by 4 points, and Sané by 1 point. Bilva got more points than him. KDB would have outscored him had Kun not been such a selfish little rascal.

KDB still surely the better pick?

You'd think so, but KdB isn't explosive. IF Sterling retains his place as Sane/Mahrez rotate, he could be up for some big scores.

At 11.0 he really needs to be reliably getting braces and be a captaincy option to justify... I think KDB can still just about get away with regular 6’s, 7’s & 8’s as you would never captain him anyway & he’s looking like hassle free city attacking points.

He's only one million more; you're getting a bit carried away there. You wouldn't say KdB has to get a gazillion more points than Mahrez for his 1m difference. Everyone will have KdB, making Sterling a tidy little differential.

nb I'm not getting either at the mo. Happy with Mandy, Bilva and Kun for now.

Honestly, if sterling & KDB were the same price, I’d still have to think about it a bit, it wouldn’t be a slam dunk... maybe I’m being harsh on sterling as he’s only had one good season & he will go on to get 250 points to KDB’s 200 and make a mockery of his price tag

Kdb is good but hardly worth the extra over starting Bilva. So as long as Dilva is out and Bilva and Mané in form, no KdB for me.

Sterling blanked in 7 games he started last season, KDB blanked in 17. Both are good value IMO, but Sterling is the potential differential even at this inflated price and with inevitable rotation. I mean, 2.5% ownership for a player who can get 15+ pts anytime. Got to jump on that. This game is played against other people, not against a calculator.

Based on last season both Sterling and KdB are priced correctly. Q is whether he can keep it up, I think he can, but too soon to tell. Possibly a better option than all 11+ strikers though.

Gylfi is probably the player most under pressure at the club this season. He wil have the players around him to play and he has to put it together from the No. 10 position. I hope he steps up to the plate but I have some doubts. Can't see Silva being all that patient with him. Next week should be a great opportunity for him to get started in building a legacy for himself.
