The January wildcard meant many managers ended up with very similar teams, but with injury doubts, tougher fixtures and the promise of double Gameweek profits, we’re starting to see those broken up and a host of new names being thrown about. With just 12 weeks to go, if you’re going to make a move on your mini league leader then it’s probably now or never; playing safe simply isn’t an option any more…..

Peter Odemwingie

As the hottest player in the FPL game over the last two weeks Peter Odemwingie is hardly an undiscovered talent, but with an ownership of only 3.5% the Nigerian International still very much falls into the ‘Differential’ category. An early season knee injury and subsequent fallout with manager Roy Hodgson saw Odemwingie increasingly marginalised in the West Brom setup, but that all seems to be behind him now; he looks like a new player recently and his confidence is overflowing.

West Brom are on fire at the moment; their 4-0 thrashing of in-form Sunderland followed a completely dominant victory over Wolves a week earlier, and Peter Odemwingie has been at his clinical best. Five goals and 30 points over the last two Gameweeks may flatter the Nigerian slightly, but it was no fluke either. Odemwingie has simply relished his new role on the right-flank, enabling him to cut in and threaten opponents – something he’s done more effectively than any other striker over the past two Gameweeks.

Pavel Pogrebnyak

In stark comparison to last year when injuries meant they were often forced to play without a recognised striker, Fulham fielded five at once at QPR last weekend; Moussa Dembele, Clint Dempsey, Bryan Ruiz, Andy Johnson and Pavel Pogrebnyak all started with the latter two playing in the formal striker roles. Andy Johnson offers an interesting option priced at just 4.7 in the FPL game, but it is new signing Pogrebnyak that most caught the eye last weekend and priced at 6.0 and with an ownership of 0.4%, the Russian could be a great third striker option. He recently admitted that he has found the frantic pace of the Premier League exhausting, but that hasn’t seemed to have stopped him banging in the goals so far.

Fixtures continue to fall Fulham’s way over the coming weeks, with home games against Wolves, Swansea and Norwich in the next five and having some representation from the Fulham attack looks almost essential right now. Clint Dempsey has been one of the most popular picks in recent weeks and still offers a strong threat, despite being relegated to a wide midfield role but at 9.2, many will be questioning the value considering the wealth of alternatives in midfield. Pogrebnyak offers an interesting “Differential” then, and if he can keep his starting role up front then he would be a much better value route into the Fulham attack.

Ryan Shotton

We’re always on the lookout for potential “Out Of Position”(OOP) defenders, and have been keeping a close eye on the progress of Ryan Shotton at Stoke, with Tony Pulis seemingly preferring the local youngster to Jermaine Pennant on the right flank. Now that he has shaken off the injury problems that were causing him problems last month, Shotton looks set for a continued run of starts in the team and with Pulis suggesting this week that playing in midfield is “very much a long term option for him”, we’re backing him to bring in the points this weekend.

With a home tie against Norwich up next, Shotton looks like great value at 4.0 considering his potential at both ends of the pitch. He had a great game against Swansea last weekend picking up an assist and a clean sheet, and although Norwich have a pretty good record on the road this season, they will find it hard to break down a full strength Stoke side and another home shut out looks a real possibility.

Ballsy team you've got there. The Kolorav (C) could turn out to be genius or a massive let down.

I don't trust Saha one bit.

Yes but not captain. I have been keeping an eye on him and he played well the few games before his 15 pointer.

I bought richards 3 times this season and all 3 times he ended up getting injured so i finally said enough is enough and brought in kolarov.

Yeah but they also spent 22m on Nasri, 26m on Milner, 27m on Dzeko and 16m on Toure, and none of those are nailed on.

That said, 2-3 more good games from Kolarov and he'll be first choice for sure, although I still see the occasional rotation.

I was thinking this too. I will have either player who i do not start as first sub incase Bale does no play. Pretty sure Spurs will score but never know with Everton.

Dammit. I'm thinking that next week I will get Aguero out and bring in Suarez rather than Rooney as planned. I absolutely hate that idea, but the punk has better fixtures and I can do lots more with the extra loot.

This was not a call for help nor any kind of request to you nice folks, but just putting it out there in case it helps any of you. No room for sentiment in the FPL picks.

To answer our defence/attack questions in one go I've looked at team goal stats in selected fixtures of interest where it might be difficult to back a side...

Figures listed are the home or away stats for each team.

    QPR v EVE
    F13......F12
    A21......A14
    GD-8....GD-2

    STO v NOR
    F17......F18
    A14......A26
    GD+3...GD-8

    WIG v SWA
    F11.......F10
    A22.......A24
    GD-11...GD-14

    NEW v SUN
    F20......F14
    A14......A17
    GD+6...GD-3

    FUL v WOL
    F24.....F13
    A19.....A23
    GD+5..GD-10

    TOT v MUN
    F29......F26
    A10......A11
    GD+19..GD+15

    DEFENSIVE PICKS
Spurs, Newcastle and Stoke have conceded the least goals at home. However you can distinguish between them by their opponents' goalscoring records away, and you'd rule out Spurs facing a team that's scored an average of 2 goals per away game. Newcastle's opponents Sunderland have an unimpressive number of goals scored away, but a fair amount of that was under Steve Bruce and with their improvement under O'Neill in both attack and defence they are a more difficult proposition. Stoke's opponents Norwich have strikingly high goals scored away. So there some doubt over both clean sheets.

Let's look at the alternatives then. Strangely enough, current favourites Fulham have conceded quite a few at home, behind only Wigan and QPR. They are facing Wolves who have scored few away though. There may be a sense that the defence is improving with Hughes and Hangeland, so they may be a decent CS pick. QPR at home on the face of it is a risk with their goals conceded, but they are facing Everton who have the second worst number of away goals, making QPR a more palatable possibility. Taking away defences into account, none of the away CS candidates stand out apart from Everton who have measly away goals conceded against a team with measly home goals scored.

Candidates: Fulham, Stoke, Newcastle, QPR, Everton (in that rough order)

    OFFENSIVE PICKS
In truth there aren't many obvious gems to be found in offensive picks here. The only team that jumps out is Fulham, with lots of home goals scored against Wolves with lots of away goals conceded. Both Spurs' and United's home and away defensive records reduce the attractiveness of their respective scoring records, though you'd put United before Spurs based on their dominance head-to-head. Newcastle home to Sunderland might be a cautious pick with a middling number of home goals scored against a middling number of away goals conceded.

Candidates: Fulham, Newcastle, United, Spurs (in that rough order)

PS: Should add Stoke have a chance of goals against Norwich with Norwich's dreadful away goals conceded record. But generally Stoke don't score many.

Yeah I know I probably could have been philosophical about it but I just see panic spread like this so many times. I mean, you could ask this question any point in the season couldn't you because the squad is big? But in reality how often does it happen to these two?
