With the summer transfer window closing just over 24 hours before the start of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign, the frenetic pre-season preparations left us little time to assess any of the moves in closer detail.

Amid all the big-money transfers, our first Moving Target piece scrutinises a player who didn’t cost a penny – at least not yet.

Danny Ings‘ (£5.5m) loan move to Southampton from Liverpool was one of the last transfers to be completed on Thursday and not announced until three-and-a-half hours after the deadline had passed.

Though Ings’ move to his boyhood club is in name a temporary one, the Saints have an obligation to buy the 26-year-old striker at the end of this season for a reported £18m.

Ings made his Southampton debut on Sunday afternoon in the 0-0 draw with Burnley, coming on as a 56th-minute substitute for the injured Stuart Armstrong and impressing alongside first Charlie Austin (£6.0m) and then Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m).

Speaking after the match, Ings said:

At the moment, I’m getting used to the way the team play – I wanted to come on and get a feel for the football they play. We play good football here and there are some really, really good players. It’s a pleasure to work with them.

There were a lot of spaces coming deep, so I drifted into those pockets, got on the ball and tried to play people in. I want to show people it’s not all about running in behind for me – I can come short and play too.

I’ve had two or three years of terrible luck and frustration really, so to come here, be free and play my football – I couldn’t be happier, or have a better club for me right now in my career.

Manager Mark Hughes was quick to dismiss worries about Ings’ fitness issues, which contributed to him only playing 14 league fixtures in three seasons at Liverpool:

He’s proved his fitness, it’s not as if we have to get him rehabbed, he’s a fit young man – he’s had the injury in his younger years. So, you always get a better response and outcome when that happens. We don’t have any worries about his injury.

He ended strongly at the end of last season. He’s fit, he’s well, and he’s ready to go. He’s at a point in his career where he wants to start making an impression again. He came back strongly for Liverpool at the end of last year and showed his worth to them. You’ll note Jurgen’s comments about him, as a character and as a guy. That was an important factor in being able to bring him here as well because we want to enhance the dressing room and the personnel, so that’s an added bonus for us.

The History

Born in Winchester in July 1992, Ings actually spent time with the Saints’ youth set-up before joining the academy at Bournemouth, then in League Two.

Making his debut as a 17-year-old in the Football League Trophy match against Northampton Town in October 2009, Ings spent two months on loan at non-league Dorchester Town before Eddie Howe handed the teenage striker his first league start in the 2-0 defeat to MK Dons in November 2010.

Ings went on to score seven league goals in 26 League One appearances for the Cherries in 2010/11, also grabbing a goal in the south coast club’s unsuccessful play-off campaign.

Ings made just a single start for Bournemouth in the 2011/12 campaign before Howe, who had jumped ship months earlier, snapped up Ings for his new club Burnley in the summer 2011 transfer window.

The young forward had to wait several months for his league bow, only featuring on 15 occasions for the Clarets in his first season in the Championship.

Howe returned to Bournemouth not long after the start of the 2012/13 season, a campaign in which Ings scored just three league goals in 32 Championship appearances – though only 15 were starts.

The 2013/14 season could be considered Ings’ breakthrough year, with his 21 league strikes and seven assists helping Burnley to promotion to the Premier League for the second time.

Ings took the step up to the English top flight in his stride, scoring on 11 occasions and setting up a further four goals despite Burnley’s relegation back to the Football League.

Joining Liverpool in the summer of 2015, Ings was to feature in just five Premier League matches for the Reds – scoring two goals – before a knee ligament injury effectively cut short his season.

Returning to action on the final day of the 2015/16 season, Ings was to damage his other knee in October 2016, ruling him out for the rest of that campaign too without the striker having kicked a ball in the Premier League.

Though returning to fitness in time for the season just gone, Ings was to be a peripheral figure as Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane tore up the league: Ings did, however, register his first league goal in three years with a strike in the 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion in April of this year.

Ings left Anfield after just 14 league appearances and three Premier League goals.

The Prospects

Ings’ promising debut in the draw at St. Mary’s on Sunday hinted at possibly greater things to come – providing the injury-plagued striker can stay fit, of course.

There is a real dearth of exciting budget forward options in FPL this season, with Raul Jimenez and Bobby Reid (both £5.5m) about as good as it gets in the sub-£6.0m bracket.

Priced at £5.5m himself, Ings’ move to Southampton could be a game-changer if he can recapture some of the form that saw him hit 11 league goals in his final season at Burnley.

Ings managed more in 34 minutes of his Saints bow than Charlie Austin did in more than twice that time, registering three attempts on goal and four penalty box touches. Ings also created twice as many chances (four) as any other Premier League forward at the weekend, one of which almost led to an assist as Jack Stephens forced Joe Hart into a near-post save.

The spark that Ings provided upon his introduction surely stands him in good stead ahead of the trip to Everton, with Austin and Gabbiadini offering little in the 0-0 stalemate with Burnley.

Although Southampton started with just one forward – Austin – on Sunday, Hughes frequently rolled out a two-man attack in pre-season and switched to a 4-4-2 upon Ings’ introduction at the weekend.

A two-pronged frontline would, of course, increase Ings’ chances of a start, but on current form the former Liverpool man may even lead the line himself.

That Ings often dropped deep to link up play in that draw with the Clarets suggests he would be more comfortable playing alongside another striker, however, so it remains to be seen how Hughes will adjust his tactics to accommodate his loan signing.

Ings’ ability to create as well as score adds to his appeal. In the 2014/15 season with Burnley, Ings carved out six big chances for the Clarets: just four other forwards could better that tally.

Only five forwards had more attempts on goal than Ings (97) in that season, with the striker registering a shot on goal every 34 minutes.

It should be said that all of this was accomplished playing in a relegated Burnley side who scored a league-low 28 goals as they slipped back into the Championship.

With a trip to Crystal Palace sandwiching home fixtures against Leicester and Brighton after this weekend, Ings could be a handy, budget-freeing differential: the ex-Burnley striker is currently only owned by 2.0% of FPL managers.

Could Foden be a threat, if not immediate, to B Silva's mins? Looking to get Silva in for Moura next week, and planning to hold even after WC.

No way, Foden got no chance over B Silva. But KDB and potentially D Silva will be back soon enough, which may cause problems.

It is most likely 2/3 from Dilva, Gundogan and Bilva.
      Fernandinho nailed.
2/3 Sterling, Sane, Mahrez on flanks
      1/2 Aguero & Jesus

You forgot KDB! He’s nailed and then 1 spot for either B or D Silva or Gund. But B Silva could also go back out to the wing and impact on Mahrez/Sterling/Sane minutes. Based on Pep’s comments on B Silva though I can’t see him being dropped/rotated for a few weeks at least.

His line-up is based during the time KDB is injured. My question is also based during the time KDB is injured.

I’d say a clean sheet is almost certain, almost, and he could well get some attacking points again so not a bad option at all. I have Aguero though, and while a blank is more likely than Mendy, I also think a hat trick is a real possibility so going with the exciting option!

  11. Are premium defenders season keepers?

Just finished watching the Scoutcast. Quite enjoyed the Kante discussion. I'm with Joe FWIW.

One argument I really couldn't follow the logic of was Az saying he'd end up with 3 cheap defenders. After a week when 5 at the back was the ideal choice, with Mendy, Robertson and Palace defenders all looking like amazing options, how does it make sense to be banging the 4.5 rotation 3 at the back drum?

I'm not saying I will be advocating 5 at the back on a regular basis. But the idea of ditching the premium defenders seems bizarre.

    1. Jackie Moon
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

I agree. Premium defenders seem like much better value than the mid/forwards around the same price. I currently have a premium keeper and 3 premium defenders along with Lowton and of course AWB. Third forward is just bench fodder until a budget option actually looks viable. Ings is the one I’m monitoring, but at the moment the defenders looks more appealing than him.

      1. DJDave1979
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

I'm certainly not prescriptive with formation and a firing Ings would make 3 forwards viable again. But logic says buy premium defenders for now, not to be looking for a way away from them.

    2. Trovsmash
      • 12 Years

I think his angle was more along the lines of; 3 premiums looks fantastic now, but at some point this season, x3 4.5s might be the best option as some more striking come to the fore.

      1. DJDave1979
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

It is more the certainty with which he said it that I take issue with. The game changes and we react. But premium defenders have been showing their worth for a while now and the equivalent priced strikers generally stink. As I say, I'm not against rotation and am going that way with keepers for now but Robbo, Mendy and two other defenders at 5 or 5.5 will be joining WB in my squad for the foreseeable future.

I started with 532 last season, it worked great for the first 10 weeks, then I had to transition to 352 because the value shifted into midfield.

I agree there should be no certainty, but if you look at the facts, a premium attacking full-back gets about 7-8 returns (goals + assists) max over the season. A premium centre-back will get much lesser. Over 38 games, it's quite hard to catch those at the right time. And about 15 clean sheets, but it's not like one every alternate game over 38 games. There are streaks of clean sheets and streaks of blanks. So you will probably sell them eventually and invest in attack for the likes of Zaha or Arnautovic who had streaks of their own last season.

I highly doubt any premium defenders will be season keepers. Alonso of 16/17 was the last one I can remember.

That’s just those 15 points clouding your judgement 😉

Alonso that season was a keeper mainly because Chelsea were a freak team keeping clean sheets every week. I think they went around 8 games straight at least.

Mendy does not bomb forward when Sane is on the pitch, because he provides that width on the left (community shield first half). Pep’s system for most of last season involved playing traditional wingers on their strong sides, not inverted wingers. His returns will be on and off.

I think his point was that each season there are run of points across various positions. This year has started like last year, the heavy hitting premium defenders are providing strong returns. However as the season goes on, we tend to see a run of form across other lines. For large sections of last season many had two premium strikers (Kane and Aguero) and lighter set of defenders. His point was that There was no set rule regarding formation and this season is no different. You need to know when to reshape your squad - throughout the season - according to where you think points and value are going to be.

Regarding Kanté, his stats are terrible and he cannot be likened to Yaya and Ramsey (who are accurate and have an eye for goal). I’d much rather Neves or Fraser around that price point.

I'm about to take off on a plane so apologies if I don't get back to you but the points per million for premium defenders has been much better than similar priced players further forward. It was this analysis that had most of us picking 2 or 3 premium defenders in early drafts along with a number of 4-man back lines. As the deadline approached more of the old 4.5m rotation stuff came back.

And now, despite being proved totally justified in spending more at the back, people are getting antsy. It's the 'sexiness'of chasing multiple goals instead of boring clean sheet points that is swaying people.

Almost everyone here would have scored higher the more defenders they picked. I had a great start, but it would have been better had I gone 5-4-1 as my brain and pre season was telling me to.

I went 5-4-1 and only made 73 pts. Which if good, but bad against alot here for gw1. Lost 2 clean sheets in last min for utd and davies only spurs defender not to get attacking pts. Sticking with it for now to see if it pays off.

Investing in the back has been a good option for a while now I think. This year however there’s is even better value going a bit cheaper with Liverpool, possibilities with Man Utd and some nice 5.5’s too.

I guess the thing is whether you believe one game is enough to predict the entire rest of the premier league.

Next week Kane, Aguero and Firmino will score and everyone will be saying the exact opposite when their premium defenders all score 2 points.

I actually have one premium defender in Robertson but there are so many good attacking options who will almost certainly come good soon.

I've got 4 premium defenders and Wan-Bis for the bench.

A lot of the debate above is overlooking the OP's key phrase, "season keepers". Look at the end of season points totals.
The 6.5-6.0m defenders come from the most successful defensive teams - City, United, Chelsea, Spurs and now we can add Liverpool. If we compare their expected full-season points total with 6-6.5m midfielders and forwards, we can expect our defenders to score better.

My rule of thumb is that you expect your premium defenders to keep a clean sheet or attacking return every other game, and bag a few baps along the way. In contrast, what you expect from your 4.5 defenders is 2 points most weeks with the occasional lucky bonus. Over the season very few will match the totals of the premium defenders and you will have to keep using transfers to hop on and off the momentarily hot ones.

It's a perfectly wise strategy to have 3 premium defenders who play week in week out; I'm going for four myself who will be undroppable by me and only rest when their manager decides - at which time I'm happy for the freak-success of Wan-Bissaka to fill in. He can even step up to make a back 5 when any of my 5 midfielders are dropped and I can't utilise my default 4-5-1 formation.

True. I guess the difference is your 4.5 striker will never realistically score any points so it's a complete waste of 4.5m but your 4.5 defenders will score a decent amount with good rotation. If you add the combined score of 4.5 defenders being rotated, does it match or better a premium defender you simply leave and forget about.

Not to mention how much added value the extra cash gives to the midfield striker options.

That’s what makes people listen week after week. A fantasy football soap opera. Since Mark has semi-abandoned FFS (I used to love the Pre-amble on Saturday mornings) it’s gone downhill. There are now better fantasy football podcasts out there and sadly FFS has ditched its USP. A real shame.

The point may well have been made above but I think a simple distillation of the decision-making process is "which" defenders.

      - Five at the back makes no sense if four or fewer defenders regularly outscore their price delta.

      - Three at the back makes no sense if four or more defenders regularly outscore their delta.

it depends who represents great value at any given time.

I think one of the biggest threats to the premium backline is that fact that this year we have 2-3 playing 4.0 defenders. This represents superb value, and also enables you to rotate them and play the fixtures to an extent, which you can't do with the premiums. At the start of the season I quite like to cover a number of pricepoints, if possible, and 5 premiums at the back is quite inflexible. Not to say it isn't a potentially successful strategy though - there's more than one way to skin a cat in FPL.

4m defenders aren't season keepers. I think we may have an exception in Wan-Bissaka - I got him in for the start but of course he scored all those GW1 points on my bench! After the GW2 match v Liverpool he may well feature more regularly in my line-up but he'll likely be on the bench most weeks.

The other 4m defenders I don't rate. Peltier is in a defence that will probably face very few clean sheets and a good few thrashings, and Bennett probably won't keep his place. The others won't start much. So like what I said about 4.5m defenders, you'll be forever using transfers to try to catch the right moment to transfer out and get in cheap defenders. In contrast, the premium defenders are fire-n-forget options until they are injured.

Fire and forget was why I went with Alisson and Robertson (and Salah) and reluctantly got rid of Mané. Rotation can work great but I have less fun playing FPL when I rue missed points, when I have to wait for clean sheets, and when too many of my attackers play in the same game (fewer fixtures to look forward to!).

Sure, you and Squishy are drawing on an emotive point that I can empathise with. I double up in defence - I have Rutiger and Luiz and of course conceding a 92nd minute consolation is a killer. But in the cold heart of day I expect them to keep that cleanie more often. And yes, the feeling I get when the ref blows and a clean sheet is preserved is not the same as a 92nd minute winner from my captain!

Plenty goal thrills there, I think!

I never said they were season keepers. Although if they keep their places in their respective clubs starting elevens then there isn't much need to change them.

Crystal palace under hodgeson are probably good for 10-15 clean sheets this season. Find a 4.0 or 4.5 defender who rotates well with Wan-Bissaka and you could get premium defender performance for that slot in your team for 1-2m less.

Points per million makes no sense because I don’t think Inhave ever gone a season with a single player - you have to hit the clean sheets when they arrive (look at Southampton’s yearly run that they do).

You are right, the sexiness of goals and assists always outweighs a clean sheet, for me that’s because a clean sheet can be lost with a single mistake, but a goal can happen at any time.

      Some people never learn.
Last season, Bharat Dhody played 4 at the back for most of the season and was unlucky not to win FPL when half his squad were benched in GW38.
And a theoretical dead team that would have beaten the FPL Champion was in 4-4-2 formation (with Azpilicueta, Alonso, Otamendi and B.Davies in defence and DDG in goal). The forward line was Vardy and Firmino.

My own team has started with 4 elite defenders, although I benched one of them in GW1 because it seemed a bit risky to play both Mendy and Walker in an away match at Arsenal. It scored 104 points and is top of the Mods & Cons League.

        https://fpldiscovery.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/dreamteams.jpg

Would you say that prioritizing investment in midfield/attack was the wrong way to go in 11/12 and 12/13? Some of them are more difficult to asses. But at least 3-4 others look like seasons were 3-4-3/3-5-2 with "light" defence might be the best option.

The name of the game is "making moves". And i dont find it Weird that both Kenneth tang and ville ronka have chosen a fair few budgetplayers i defence this year. I like to believe that i'm a staunch defender of the idea of investing money at the back. But although it seems like its often the most sensible thing to do, its not like the only correct way to play the game. Many experienced managers choose to rotate cheap defenders and Get on and off the premium options at the right time, getting high ranks in the provess. Who are we to say they never learn?

For many years 3-4-3 (and sometimes 3-5-2) were the best formations.

But more recently, a few things have changed.
          - The bonus points system has been improved so that it no longer discriminates against defenders and goalkeepers.
          - Defenders and goalkeepers are more fairly priced relative to forwards and midfielders than they used to be.
          - The widening gap between the big six teams and the rest, and the emergence of wingbacks and other defenders from these top teams who can get significant numbers of attacking points as well as clean sheets.
          - Last season in particular, there were also very few good forward options. Some were too expensive, and others scored less well than similarly priced midfielders and defenders.

4-4-2 was the most effective system last season, with premium defenders rather than cheap rotating ones, as shown by Bharat Dhody, the theoretical super dead team and various analyses published here in pre-season, but many experienced players continued to stick to the old 'tried-and-tested' 3-4-3 that had served them so well in the past and in my opinion this was one of the reasons for so many of them having such disappointing seasons.

It remains to be seen how this season will go, and 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 may yet emerge as equally good if not better later in the season, but I have not seen any evidence yet that playing 4 at the back with premium defenders will not again be at least one of the best ways to go.

And this does not prevent us from "making moves" - even though the super dead team (which would only be picked by Captain Hindsight) shows what can theoretically be achieved even if we don't!

            Cheers!
I think this is a lot more thoughtful reply than the one above. Pretty much agree with all your points, and this is probably why more people are open to the idea of putting more money in their defence. I, for one, enjoy playing that way the most, because i feel its a safer route into a high steady stream of points.

            Theres a big but however.
One thing that hasn't changed as much, is the volatility in the returns of the attacking players. They come with a higher risk/reward than the defenders. I've yet to see a defender averaging 10pts pr game over a 5 week period. Mids and attackers hitting terrific form is something that happens every year. Some people are very confident in their ability to switch between "high ceiling" players trying to squeeze the extra juice they can provide. I am not of that ilk, but I would'nt go as far as saying that this is now an impossible feat in the current FPL-landscape. Keeping tabs on some of the "most proven" managers over the last couple of seasons, i'd say a lot of them are playing this Kind of game to good effect.

Were all making moves, and even if were going light or heavy i defence, id still say that were using most of our transfers trying to hit the form of the attacking options, so that really wasnt the point. The point was that, depending on how much money they can comfortably shave from defence, the more they get to play with in offense, and they kan keep and swap more high volatility assets as an effect. I've come to realise it's not for me over the last couple of years, as I've become more dull and cynical. But also feel it's wrong to call people out for not getting on with the times. Their way of doing things might stil yeild better results.

I would'nt say its bizarre, but rather that its not likely we'll find longer spells were 4.5 rotation will provide more value than premium assets. It's all very situational, but if were looking at seasonal trends, I believe that previous "dreamteams" can show how different the premier League seasons can be.

      https://fpldiscovery.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/dreamteams.jpg

Previous dreamteams have shown that a dreamteamworthy season can range from 138-196pts for defenders, 159-305pts for mids and 167-295pts for strikers. Theres been seasons where only one defender has passes 140pts, and theres been season where several have passed 170pts. For mids and attackers there have been seasons where none have passed 200pts, and there have been seasons where as many as 5 have passed.

Whether its just or not to either go heavy or light in defence really depends on the trends emerging this season. Were not only comparing the defenders with mids and attackers at the same pricepoint, were comparing the "points lost" by reducing our investment in defence with the points gained by funneling the money saved in to one or more attacking slots.

If this season really holds 2-3 4.0s starting every week and 5 mids and attackers breaking 200pts, one might want to have a look at going light i defence if defenders are maxing out around the 150mark. If theres several defenders looking to break 170pts, we might be more inclined to invest more in defence, and possibly play 4 or 5 at the back.

Its to early to tell. Eriksen, Alli, Kane, Lukaku, Sanchez, Aguero, Sterling, KDB, Salah, Hazard, ozil, have all broken the 200mark. They can do it again. Several others also come with the promise of accomplishing such a feat. But on the other end, clean sheets have been on the rise the last couple of seasons amongst the top sides. Theres also more attacking promise, especially from the fullbacks, then i can remember from seasons way back. Thats why I'm happy to keep trusting my three prem defenders for now. No reason to react to heavily on what happened gwk1.

The prices of the mids and forwards who score 200+ points will have a big effect, not just their number.
If they are all premium players then we may not be able to afford as many of them as we would like without weakening the rest of the squad too much.
But if some are mid-price bargains then it becomes easier to afford more of them.

We probably don't yet know which mid-price bargains will emerge, or how many - if it were that obvious from the start which players are underpriced then they would probably have been priced higher in the first place.
So perhaps it might be sensible to start with a strong back-line and then be prepared to change our formation later, possibly when we play our wildcard. This may be approximately what AZ did last season.

It seems the more I think about it the more I keep slightly modifying my opinion!
It probably pays to keep an open mind.

For sure! there has been some outstanding gems at kind pricepoints hitting 200+pts ppg-level (5,3) over the seasons. But theres seldome an abundance of them, and thats why the likes of YaYa, Ramsey, Mahrez, Vardy, Alli, Kane, Michu and a couple of others are regularly mentioned in that familiar "remember when X was priced X?".

If such targets appear, they are as close to "must-haves" as any player can be. But it doesnt change the fact that its whether cheap defenders can offer good value compared to the premium ones, and whether theres a lot of highscoring mids and attackers on offer, thats should largely influence our decisions on whether to go light or heavy in defense.

Bizarre comment from him really and surprising when you consider he was on the wing back stratergy last year.

Premium defenders are not defenders in reality, players like Mendy, Robertson even Ben Davies play like old style midfielders with the amount of crosses they put in & chances they create, they can certainly be season keepers because they offer the possibility of points at both ends of the pitch so you aren't JUST relying on clean sheets to make them worth it.

Alonso was a season keeper for a lot in their title winning season because the threat at both ends was always there, the sooner people get into the mindset that in modern football, these wingbacks are not traditional defenders, the easier it'll become to accept that investing there & keeping them is a smart move, the games evolving.

I enjoy the fact that some might be considered "season keepers". But, as the top sides keep more clean sheets against the poorer sides, and also find themselves in more attacking positions in these games, one should pobably look to play the fixtures a bit. Especially as almost all the top 6 sides offer 1-2 fairly attackminded defenders.

The obvious rebuttle would be shouting Mendy from gw1 this year, and Alonso from spursgame last year, to try and make the argument not stick, but these are the outliers. Fixtures affects the ppg of top6 players quite considerably.

Would prob also note that the highest scoring fpldefenders in history, hasnt been wingbacks, but centrebacks.

          Terry (196)
          Lescott (196)
          Vidic (187)
          Terry (184)

The deadly setpieceoption, playing for a top side, might be the most dangerous asset in amongst defenders. Guess that and nailedness is what persuaded many, myself included, to opt for VVD over Robbo.

Is anyone, apart from, let's say, Salah (if he stays fit) a season keeper?

Mendy, I suspect, will endure a bumpy rotation ride. Robertson and PvA, on the other hand, seem the more secure bets for the whole season.

And if wingbacks are the new wingers, the English game is back and I'm loving the 4-4-2/4-3-3....or even 5-4-1.

AWB is probably the closest thing to a season keeper in the game.

Wait... Does that mean one of them is playing because you have KDB on the bench? That doesn't sound good at all. I would definitely make a sub even for a hit. So much money to have on the bench!

A good opportunity to shake it up imo.

For me, the length of the Scoutcast is a little long (perhaps cut rough and the smooth). Also, there isn’t much variation in opinions and approaches. The show would benefit from introducing a contributor that comes at FPL from a very different angle. No offence to the current crew, but it’s a bit of a dullard echo chamber right now...

That's why I enjoyed the Kante discussion. Last year around the chip use it was so dull listening to everyone agreeing with each other. 50 per cent were going without Salah including Luke so why not get him in? Having Salah in itself leads to something of a template team. But I really did think last night was a step up from the last couple of months of last season. I think Kane and Aguero both firing would really shake things up and we would see some great debates.

I pray for Sanchez and Sterling to haul too and a Salah blank. Would make next week fascinating.

Mark is the best man on Scoutcast and his approach was different so he was missed but it sounds like he's made a sensible decision to take more of a back seat.

Not sure a salah blank changes anything? He's not going to score every week, and his next game is Brighton at home.

A salahless team is so tempting though

I actually wouldn't mind a blank this week. In a perverse way. Lots of people will knee jerk and take him out. Then he'll bang 3 past Brighton.

I actually don’t mind that. I think you’ll make up the 4 point hit straight away.

Perhaps just Sanchez to Eriksen this week and then Mili to B.Silva next week, if you want to avoid the hit.

Hey all. So I’m still pretty new here and trying to use the RMT tool in the members area. Seems pretty straight forward, but 2 things...

    1. What is considered a good score? I can see what it’s giving me, but how do I know what to compare that against?

    2. It says it’s supposed to calculate the score from the 11 best player scores and the others have a ‘b’ next to them. But GW3 has Kamara (0.97) playing in my team over Lowton and AWB who have scores around 2.4. Is this a glitch or something I’m missing?

335 with a weak team! Damn I like my team, but only have 330. Scored 93 in first round so pretty happy with that!

Kamara is predicted to score 0.97, but is starting ahead of both Lowton and AWB who are predicted to score over 2.4. Must be some sort of glitch in the program! Tried resetting and entering team again, but still showing Kamara in the team.

    Finally a member!
Been following this site for the past 3-4 years and I had a goal of becoming a member once I started my job (wanted to become a member by my own earned money and not my Dad's money 🙂 ), and that happened this year 🙂
People like Mark, Jonty (JOE), Torres Magic, Doosra, Giggs Boson, Berbino's Forehead, Lucy, Punt Master(he was great with his GmWk Punts picks, wonder where he is now), Ruth, G-Whizz, Top Marx, YMA, FPL Virgin (those questions for Scoutcast are really entertaining), Deulofail, etc to name a few have really made this community a fascinating place(though some are not as active now as they were before) and it feels great to be a member 🙂
Barely got time for the past 2 years, as those were the final 2 years of my Engineering and was busy due to campus placements activities , especially last year (which was horrible FPL wise as I barely got time).
Hoping to bounce back this season.

Just finished watching the Scoutcast and even at under an hour, it felt long. I've rarely missed one over the past two seasons anyway and enjoyed them, but it has gone stale imo.
I think there should be a non-writer, regular FFS poster perhaps, on each week to shake things up. SR was fine but apart from his Ben Chilwell pick as outside captaincy pick was a bit dull (no offence meant btw, as doing a great job on here as writer). Andy and Az don't seem to contribute a whole lot imo but perhaps I'm being a bit harsh there.
Maybe Mark missing affects the show a little too, but I always enjoyed the shows better when Granville was on them.

Mark was the only one worth listening to. Each to their own of course but Jonty is purely a stats man and the others contribute nothing of interest and are very average players. It lost its way a long time ago. I d like a return to just Mark and Granville, two mates having a bit of light hearted fun. Happier days.

Yeah, got quite bored of it towards the end of last season (once the double GWs came around). Prob wont continue to watch it if continues on the current path. Seems a waste of an hour and agree FPL should be more fun! One of the reasons that I used BB in GW1 this year!

Just watched it Joe. Maybe I'm just feeling a bit old and cynical today mate but feel the show needs a pep up. I suspect a B.B. in gw1 wouldn’t even be mentioned on the scout cast. I might be wrong as I no longer listen to it. That’s because the players are too similar without a hint of the maverick. It’s not even a maverick option, it was the best option but scoutxadt pkayers follow the herd and always have.

It not the same anymore. When it was Granville, Jonty and Mark you had Three people with different approaches, and it made it interesting. The current bunch all play pretty much in the same way so there is not that diversity of opinion.

It only gets rolled out now if there a proper angle to it. So won’t be every week.

This week’s RCA 30 pt B.B. and Mark’s 30 pt left on the bench is a case on point.

If there’s no angle we won’t do it. This week there was though.

Yep - no point doing it if it has no angle.

The scoutcast is 4 men talking about a sports/statistics based, on-line computer game. If we want maverick then we should watch re-runs of Bottom on Dave. If my missus knew I was spending over an hour watching this stuff she’d leave me.

I’m pleased that these guys give up several hours each week to talk through their decisions and theories.I”be only ever had one top 50k finish because (partly) I’m a Hit merchant who knew-jerks so it is good to hear a considered view on things.

I can”t deny that the old days of Mark and Granville was slightly more engaging but let”a give it a chance to evolve and see where Jonty can take it.

After complaining last year about how long it took took for the podcast to come out each week it was great to see it pop in on Thursday last week. Someone has made an effort there.

One small thing though, maybe the new fella could move his computer away from his garage window.

The balance between informing and entertaining in broadcasting is as old as Lord Reith and won’t go away.

We hope to do both but above all we want viewers and listeners to take away good advice and do well in FPL. Each week we get lots of really great feedback thanking us for a particular piece of info that helped them make a decision. That’s great to hear.

Luke Williams. if you go to the status page ( on the FPL site)and check out the second highest value team at the bottom (super puzzle fighter) I assume this is his only team? And also assuming he played a Wild card.

Haha, same my average amount of hits taken beats most I'm sure. This approach only worked once, two seasons ago, when I finished top 5k! This season I'm trying a new steady knee approach which actually makes the game a little fun, as in different than usual for me! Still not easy keeping that knee steady 😉

Been listening to the scoutcast since since 3/4 seasons now and couldn't agree more. Not having Mark on the show is a real downer imo. Same with Granville, we've lost most of the banter which used to make the show such fun.

A member of the community should be invited each week to join the scoutcast as it has been suggested time and time again. Dividing figures like FPL Virgin and many others should have the opportunity to express their views, that for sure would spice it up and get people interested again.

That being sad, I still want to thank you guys for all the time you put in the scoutcast 🙂

Mark was the only guy whose opinion was ever of much interest to me to be honest; he's a very good FPL manager. Jonty is a decent manager but competently dull in his approach; basically he follows stats and you can see those quite easily for yourself.

Unfortunately a lot of the others are very average and the sight of Munday expressing his views all over the site as if they have any value whatsoever is bewildering. Seriously, 175k is a peak season for him. He may be good on social media and the rest but why should that make his thoughts on FPL of any value? He's like the FFS version of Jules Breach, who knows next to nothing about the game but can at least draw upon a lifelong passion for shoes. 😕

Really? You think that's my general view of women? How would you know?

Actually it's my specific view of Jules Breach. And the other presenter of that show is hardly better.

The shame is your ability not to take a little of what you hand out, you're very good at handing out opinions and strong ones at that but just don't like it in the other direction, that's the real shame.
This comment was stating a fact, one that I'm sure you'll manage to use to your own needs as and when it suits you and only you.
As far as your opinions are concerned, I generally find them a good read and insightful but you are just a guy on a forum - just like me , who can be called out by whoever wishes to.... unless you go down the road of 'flagging' every comment that doesn't suit you.

I have watched every single ScoutCast and I have felt the big drop off this year.

The main reason is that Mark seems to be stepping away. No written Preamble. He isn’t in the ScoutPicks.

Mark does need to delegate some of the work of the site since it has grown so well, but the key is this: We don’t NEED the opinions of all these other guys! Joe is an awesome, top quality guy. Andy and Az are cool and I do like them. (Who the heck is David though? Nice bloke be he stepped in with no introduction and zero pedigree.) Ultimately, I don’t need to hear their opinions…thus the ScoutCast becomes “entertainment”…and weak entertainment at that. Now they have to compete with all of the other pods that I listen to here in the States (Bill Simmons, Adam Carolla, Bill Burr, Jay Mohr, etc).

This Extra Time video was great, but do you guys want us to skip all other content here and just jump straight to that? I will still support the ScoutCast and I will always pay my yearly membership, but it brings minimal value to me.

Mark is the only player that can rival Ronke and Egersdorff. Mark knows when to change the topic on the ScoutCast. Granville has balls so he is properly respected. He isn’t afraid to mock or chuckle at what the other members say on the ScoutCast.

This week Jonty spent 10 minutes extolling the virtues of Kante….when Kante played against Hudd as probably the worst team in the prem and Chelsea won 3-0 with Kante pushing up. As soon as Chelsea plays any decent team we all know that Kante will be right back to CDM. That ScoutCast was a waste of my time and Mark would have set it straight.

I have been here from Day 1 of this FFS site…the 9 next to my name should actually be an 11 or 12 as I was here for a few years before they started the memberships (“Shorey”).

So everyone please stop criticizing Ruth for his honestly. Even if it is blunt he is 100% correct.

Mark, please do stay directly involved and please keep your face and your knowledge right out there in the front line here. You might be busy with family and with running this site…but YOU Mark are the difference that makes this site what it is (and then awesome guys like Jonty & Company can banter with you and bring up the Magic Beans…that was excellent!).

      Cheers.

Well that's a very nice thing to say, especially since several days have passed.

I never want to say anything negative about this site...Mark is so thoughtful and kind, and he is truly elite in his FPL thinking & performance.

That's why I wrote such a long statement...clearly people don't agree or it was TL;DR.

I just want him to stay directly involved at the forefront because this season there have been dozens of new FPL podcasts created...we all have opinions though so none of them are much value.

          Good luck to you, Girth.

Take him back out for a hit and bring in Mane or another City? Or wait and do it for free?

Thanks all! I’ve got Kenedy of Newcastle as back up, kind of thinking brining in another City mid will net more points. Would need 6 to make it worth it.

        Mahrez perhaps

Very genuinely considering Luiz to Walker for a -4 (already have 1m in the bank). May not be a sensible move points wise in the immediate GW, but will surely pay off over the next 6 right?

      Rest of my team is:
      Patricio-4.0
      Mendy-Robertson-Luiz-Cook-WB
      Salah-Mane-Richarlison-Jota-4.5
      Aguero-Arnie-King

Yeah, I get that if I look at it like 1 GW at a time, then the hit will never make sense. But just think about it long term. Walker will surely keep more cleanies than Luiz over the next 6 to make it worth it?

I wouldn’t be so sure. Chelsea have a decent run of fixtures as well and Luiz could pop up with a goal or two. I’d save the -4 and the money itb.

Well, Lacazette and Maddison could trump Auba and Cairney.. So if you do make that move, there is a decent Arsenal option still open for you. I expect Lacazette to start from GW3 onwards.

I played Hughes in week 1 and already have a 4.5 filler. I have 2.0 in the bank so think next week I’m going to maybe switch Hughes to Mkhitaryan.

Nope I'm actually more comfortable with Mahrez now. We don't yet know if/how Pep will set up with any consistency, but has said Mahrez can play more right/left/centre. Silva, Sane, Jesus still have to be factored in. Bernardo may remain further fwd, or not, With KDB out Mahrez could remain on set pieces, or not.

If you're playing Aguero as your premium striker and planning to switch to Aubameyang then week 6 looks like the perfect time. Assuming Aguero plays each of the next 4 games. Switching in week 6 gives 6 home games in 8 weeks

You could well be onto something there, having patience on bringing in Auba could be shrewd. Loads seem 100% set on doing the swap in GW3 but a Kun hattie would soon stop those swaps!

Salah, Mané, Hazard, Sterling, Eriksen, Bernardo Silva, Richarlison

^ all seem like excellent midfield picks at the moment. Then we still have the likes of Alli, Maddison, Ramsey/Ozil/Micky to consider.

If only we could play 0 forwards...

My wife has only played FPL twice. Both top 10k finishes. She has 2 tactics. Captain the best player every week (1 season was RVP and the other Suarez). Bring in on the Saturday night whoever looked best on match of the day.

She did those two things every week for 2 seasons and got back to back top 10k finishes. I am often too clever for my own good.
