Moving Target

With the summer transfer window closing just over 24 hours before the start of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign, the frenetic pre-season preparations left us little time to assess any of the moves in closer detail.

Amid all the big-money transfers, our first Moving Target piece scrutinises a player who didn’t cost a penny – at least not yet.

Danny Ings‘ (£5.5m) loan move to Southampton from Liverpool was one of the last transfers to be completed on Thursday and not announced until three-and-a-half hours after the deadline had passed.

Though Ings’ move to his boyhood club is in name a temporary one, the Saints have an obligation to buy the 26-year-old striker at the end of this season for a reported £18m.

Ings made his Southampton debut on Sunday afternoon in the 0-0 draw with Burnley, coming on as a 56th-minute substitute for the injured Stuart Armstrong and impressing alongside first Charlie Austin (£6.0m) and then Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m).

Speaking after the match, Ings said:

At the moment, I’m getting used to the way the team play – I wanted to come on and get a feel for the football they play. We play good football here and there are some really, really good players. It’s a pleasure to work with them.

There were a lot of spaces coming deep, so I drifted into those pockets, got on the ball and tried to play people in. I want to show people it’s not all about running in behind for me – I can come short and play too.

I’ve had two or three years of terrible luck and frustration really, so to come here, be free and play my football – I couldn’t be happier, or have a better club for me right now in my career.

Manager Mark Hughes was quick to dismiss worries about Ings’ fitness issues, which contributed to him only playing 14 league fixtures in three seasons at Liverpool:

He’s proved his fitness, it’s not as if we have to get him rehabbed, he’s a fit young man – he’s had the injury in his younger years. So, you always get a better response and outcome when that happens. We don’t have any worries about his injury.

He ended strongly at the end of last season. He’s fit, he’s well, and he’s ready to go. He’s at a point in his career where he wants to start making an impression again. He came back strongly for Liverpool at the end of last year and showed his worth to them. You’ll note Jurgen’s comments about him, as a character and as a guy. That was an important factor in being able to bring him here as well because we want to enhance the dressing room and the personnel, so that’s an added bonus for us.

The History

Born in Winchester in July 1992, Ings actually spent time with the Saints’ youth set-up before joining the academy at Bournemouth, then in League Two.

Making his debut as a 17-year-old in the Football League Trophy match against Northampton Town in October 2009, Ings spent two months on loan at non-league Dorchester Town before Eddie Howe handed the teenage striker his first league start in the 2-0 defeat to MK Dons in November 2010.

Ings went on to score seven league goals in 26 League One appearances for the Cherries in 2010/11, also grabbing a goal in the south coast club’s unsuccessful play-off campaign.

Ings made just a single start for Bournemouth in the 2011/12 campaign before Howe, who had jumped ship months earlier, snapped up Ings for his new club Burnley in the summer 2011 transfer window.

The young forward had to wait several months for his league bow, only featuring on 15 occasions for the Clarets in his first season in the Championship.

Howe returned to Bournemouth not long after the start of the 2012/13 season, a campaign in which Ings scored just three league goals in 32 Championship appearances – though only 15 were starts.

The 2013/14 season could be considered Ings’ breakthrough year, with his 21 league strikes and seven assists helping Burnley to promotion to the Premier League for the second time.

Ings took the step up to the English top flight in his stride, scoring on 11 occasions and setting up a further four goals despite Burnley’s relegation back to the Football League.

Joining Liverpool in the summer of 2015, Ings was to feature in just five Premier League matches for the Reds – scoring two goals – before a knee ligament injury effectively cut short his season.

Returning to action on the final day of the 2015/16 season, Ings was to damage his other knee in October 2016, ruling him out for the rest of that campaign too without the striker having kicked a ball in the Premier League.

Though returning to fitness in time for the season just gone, Ings was to be a peripheral figure as Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane tore up the league: Ings did, however, register his first league goal in three years with a strike in the 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion in April of this year.

Ings left Anfield after just 14 league appearances and three Premier League goals.

The Prospects

Ings’ promising debut in the draw at St. Mary’s on Sunday hinted at possibly greater things to come – providing the injury-plagued striker can stay fit, of course.

There is a real dearth of exciting budget forward options in FPL this season, with Raul Jimenez and Bobby Reid (both £5.5m) about as good as it gets in the sub-£6.0m bracket.

Priced at £5.5m himself, Ings’ move to Southampton could be a game-changer if he can recapture some of the form that saw him hit 11 league goals in his final season at Burnley.

Ings managed more in 34 minutes of his Saints bow than Charlie Austin did in more than twice that time, registering three attempts on goal and four penalty box touches. Ings also created twice as many chances (four) as any other Premier League forward at the weekend, one of which almost led to an assist as Jack Stephens forced Joe Hart into a near-post save.

The spark that Ings provided upon his introduction surely stands him in good stead ahead of the trip to Everton, with Austin and Gabbiadini offering little in the 0-0 stalemate with Burnley.

Although Southampton started with just one forward – Austin – on Sunday, Hughes frequently rolled out a two-man attack in pre-season and switched to a 4-4-2 upon Ings’ introduction at the weekend.

A two-pronged frontline would, of course, increase Ings’ chances of a start, but on current form the former Liverpool man may even lead the line himself.

That Ings often dropped deep to link up play in that draw with the Clarets suggests he would be more comfortable playing alongside another striker, however, so it remains to be seen how Hughes will adjust his tactics to accommodate his loan signing.

Ings’ ability to create as well as score adds to his appeal. In the 2014/15 season with Burnley, Ings carved out six big chances for the Clarets: just four other forwards could better that tally.

Only five forwards had more attempts on goal than Ings (97) in that season, with the striker registering a shot on goal every 34 minutes.

It should be said that all of this was accomplished playing in a relegated Burnley side who scored a league-low 28 goals as they slipped back into the Championship.

With a trip to Crystal Palace sandwiching home fixtures against Leicester and Brighton after this weekend, Ings could be a handy, budget-freeing differential: the ex-Burnley striker is currently only owned by 2.0% of FPL managers.

Chance of Cardiff clean sheet higher than chance of AWB/Tomkins goal so yes, Peltier is the *slightly* better option. Expect 2 points from all three options though.

Hey everyone, I'd like some genuine feedback from everyone here.

I am planning on starting a YouTube channel with a 10/15 minute video a day about FPL. The difference between myself and others is that I'm not AMAZING at FPL, but I don't spend much time on it either, yet I've had a top 1% finish in 5 of the last 7 seasons.

Therefore I want to show that even with not spending a crazy amount of time on the game, you can still do well.

Do you think this sounds interesting?

Yeah, exactly, so those that don't (or can't) spend a lot of time on thinking about FPL and my argument is that you just need 10/15 mins a day during a week to finish in the top 1% if you are thinking about/covering the decisions that matter.

It doesn't appeal to me but I might not be your target market. I'd prefer to hear from people who do spend a lot of time on it and really know their subject, even if they don't have a good rank to back it up.

I would factor in that the type of people who are searching for youtube videos on FPL are also the type of people willing to invest more time into the game. So target mid-level players perhaps, like those who want to invest a reasonable amount of time but not dedicate their lives to it and literally lose sleep over it... like some people around here 😉

Good point. That was kind of my thinking with 15 minutes a day, I think that's like a mid-level investment.

I actually think the Scoutcast is probably what I find the most useful each week as by hearing others talk through their decisions it helps me with my own, that's kind of my thinking with this.

I'm all for FPL video content and it sounds like an interesting angle (interesting experiment too).

Challenge you'll have is aiming content at a group who, by definition, don't spend that kind of time researching FPL. 15 mins a day doesn't sound like much but it's getting on for 2 hours a week. I take FPL quite seriously and I don't think I typically spend that amount of time on it.

If you said you could get a top 1% finish for 15 minutes effort a week, that would be an interesting and unique proposition and it would offer value to your target audience. Less content but more accessible.

Sorry to be the party pooper but I don't think it's viable.

Anyone finishing top 100k is going to want more varied content than your opinions to improve their rank to break top 1k. Anyone lower than that who's interested enough to improve will pick and choose their content from here.
Casuals won't watch it, that's why they're called casuals.

I don't think you have a target market with this, unless the 10-15 minutes content is unique, and by that I mean information nobody else has access to, not the way you present it.

I really like Pogba and think he is great value at 8.1m; but i'm getting increasingly twitchy about how Mourinho is mishandling the whole situation. Wouldn't surprise me if he benches Pogba just to show whose boss...

Pogba looked good in GW1 but surely all this off field nonsense is going to impact his performance?

Why would he bench Pogba? He played superbly against Leicester, looked incredible when he won the World Cup, and made a huge effort to play 80 mins GW1 when he had only trained 3 days.

      I'd say he's José's favourite player atm.

Can't see him dropping Pogba, I actually think that Pogba's comments strengthen his position at United, he knows he will outlive Jose and oddly might hold the power in this dispute. Keep him, I wouldn't waste a transfer on getting rid of Pogba, in fact I'm jealous you have him in your team.

    4. PrettyDick

I am not sure about the 'off field nonsense' per say, the source from the latest reports is unreliable to say the least. However I would still do that transfer, especially with KDB's injury. And for me, it's not (necessarily) a short term move even.

I for one think people are exaggerating Pogba's performance vs Leicester. It was great for somebody who hasn't had a lot of preseason training, and it was great in comparison to how he's performed in a lot of games with United earlier. And even when he's playing well, he isn't the greatest option out of an FPL point of view, in my opinion. He drops low and is supposed to control the game, a little like Jorginho. In this "great game" of his he had 2 shots, where one was the penalty he converted (and it doesn't seem like he's nailed on penalties either, on the basis of the argument with Alexis over this one) and 0 attempted assists.

With all this in mind, a long with our knowledge of Mourinho's tactics (for better or for worse), makes it very logical to move away from Pogba.

Meanwhile, Bernardo is hopefully a regular on citys team with KDB out and Pep's comments on B.Silva. This in one of the league's, and the world's, best attacking teams. Also, if we look at the FDR from now and up until GW8 ManU have a total of 18 where as City have only 13 (12 being the best possible FDR).

For me, the ONLY reason not to have Bernardo on your team atm (that can change with Pep rotation) is if you already have three City players you deem more vital to your team.

This answer was also based on your suggestion, however even if you don't go with Bernardo I would still change Pogba for somebody else. Although that transfer could wait until after this GW depending on who it is. One very interesting player for me will be Ramsey, if he plays in the same position on the field vs Chelsea as he did vs City then he is a very, very interesting option for me.

More players I'd consider picking over Pogba atm, in his price range or lower, (only in FPL United fans, calm down 🙂 ) are (probably, depending on what this GW shows us):
      Richarlison
      Maddison
      Mkhitaryan
      Fraser (I know..)
      Sigurdsson

Granted, a lot of these are based on fixtures.

      Good luck!

He was in my 11 for set pieces against newcastle, decided to bench 2 palace defenders v liverpool instead. Midfield would be Bilva, Mane, Salah, Jota, Richarlison with Aguero and King up top.

besides that, even though Sanchez has a good fixture Bernardo has a GREAT fixture. And his are also better in the weeks to come (FDR 18 United vs FDR 13 for city until GW8)

I must say i disagree with all the answers, I'd say make the switch. You cannot have enough city coverage. (as long as they'll play)

Maybe even consider Sterling? However If you were thinking about that change then I would wait until after this GW, but not due to alexis' fixture but only to see if Sterling starts again.

          Good luck

Gundagon and DSilva will have to throw their shoulder to the wheel a little more. Gives Mahrez and Sane more opportunities to intigrate and find some form also.

    5. MaxiRobriguez

It makes Bilva *more* nailed, not totally nailed.

I think in *easier* games I'd expect to see Bilva play deeper in the KDB role, with Gundogan on the bench. In harder games, Gundogan will play alongside Fernandinho, at which point Bilva re-enters the rotation question what with Mahrez, Dilva, Sane and Sterling for competition.

There's also a couple of outside risks in Foden taking minutes and the possibility of Man City going to a 3-5-2 (which would increase rotation risk assuming Mendy/Walker are the wing backs).

For £7.5m though he's well worth the risk and I'm taking the KDB injury news as additional reason to keep him.

So I have Aubameyang and Aguero so I’m limiting my 2nd/3rd choice top midf which atm is Bernardo Richarlison (Not Bad) w/MSalah

I honestly think the strikers have started slowly but just wait for them to explode... Having both of the big guns from GW3 is an exciting prospect, seems to be a lot of questions regarding the top priced midf atm..

Fraser has nice fixtures and may score well himself. Sterling is a nice to have but you can get Bilva for 3.5m less to free up funds elsewhere (this assuming you don't have Ederson and Mendy already, in which case I'd still plump for A albeit just).

        • 10 Years

Of course they can. The question is Aguero at risk of rotation. The answer is an unconditional yes.

Anyone considering captaining Aguero should consider if the risk of potentially only getting 1 point is offset enough by the probability of Aguero outscoring Salah by a fair whack. That's a far harder question to answer. Personally if I was resting the captaincy on Aguero I'd be wanting minimum two goals. One goal isn't enough for the additional risk of potentially not playing so my captaincy will go elsewhere.

Just think, if Aguero comes on and does get 1 point you get 2. Salah only likely to get one tops so 6 points, so in total would be missing out on 8 points between them. But Aguero could go off and you’ll risk missing out on a whole load of points.

      1. MaxiRobriguez
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

Salah goal makes it 7 points, not 6.

If you look at it the other way, if Salah get's 7 points, Aguero needs to score *at least* two goals to make the captaincy worthwhile. That gets him around 12 points including bonus. You need an Aguero brace to be a 50/50 chance to make the risk worthwhile.

        So my logic is:
        Chance of Aguero playing: 75%
        Chance of Aguero brace: 50%
        Overall chance: =37%

        = Salah capt.

What do people think about Mendy as Captain this round?

Slightly concerned about Aguero minutes, and I think Mendy against Huddersfield at home sounds strong. Playing as a winger, essentially, and a potential clean sheet on top of any assists/goals.

I've always been one to have a few differentials in the team but play safe with captains. I think mendy will always do better in the games where teams come at them and they can counter. The goals against huddersfield will come from creative one twos and possibly shots from outside the area.

More chance of a Man City clean sheet than an Aguero goal, in my opinion, on the basis Kun might not get 90 minutes. Mendy will also do his usual thing of ending up in the centre forward position sometimes. A goal from him is worth 150% of an Aguero goal.

      It's a punt, but a calculated one. I'm tempted.

    So here's my dilemma.
With kdB injured, I asked in thus comments section whether I should take a hit to take out KdB. The general consensus was a resounding YES.
    Now here is my squad.
    Kepa (Hamer)
    VvD Mendt Peltier (AwB Chambers)
    Salah Richarlison Fraser Cairney (KdB(i))
    Firmino Aguero Jimenez.
    0.0 ITB, 0FT

The ideal move is Kdb->Mane, but I already have three pool players. Even KdB to Sterling ot Hazard appeals much more than Eriksen.
Therefore, what do y'all think of simply letting this slide for GW2, and doing a double transfer (-4) next week, where more data can be assessed, and a possibly an upgrade to KdB?

Thoughts much appteciated. Its not that I didnt appreciste the replies to ny previous post, I just thought maybe I wasnt making ny concerns about taking the hit this week clear.
