Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer more questions, this time ahead of Gameweek 3.

We may have one Gameweek 2 match left to play, with Crystal Palace hosting Liverpool in Monday Night Football, but there are still plenty of talking points.

Not least that of how much money to spend in defence, how best to cover an unpredictable Manchester City attack and the upcoming good fixtures Arsenal are about to enjoy.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 3 Question Time:

Lee from FPL Family – One half of the popular married couple who play FPL together and run a YouTube channel.

Simon March – Winner of FPL in 2014/15.

Ben Crabtree – Winner of FPL in 2016/17.

QUESTION ONE – SIMON MARCH

Should we be giving up on forwards and putting that extra cash into having at least four premium wing-backs? I’m thinking of getting Robertson and Alonso to partner Mendy who I already own.

Simon: “After two weeks of watching the likes of Mendy, Robertson and Alonso marauding forward, getting goals and assists while also chipping in with the odd clean sheet, it’s pretty tempting to go big at the back.

“It’s hard to argue that, right now, 6-6.5m spent on a defender doesn’t yield better value than the same amount spent on a forward.

“However, one challenge is that while you can get decent value from a budget defender, you can currently get almost no value from a budget forward.

“If it takes a 4.5m forward to afford an additional 6m+ defender, that’s a big collective outlay on what is, effectively, one active player.

“It might improve your first eleven but it could also substantially reduce your squad’s strength in depth, increasing your exposure to rotation and reducing your ability to adapt to changes in fixtures and form.

“You could go without a premium forward but, as Aguero demonstrated on Sunday that this, in itself, can be a huge risk.

“A premium defence might be a viable strategy, but it has its trade-offs to take into account.

“Also, it only takes a week for things to change in FPL so I’d be wary of writing-off forwards this early in the season.”

QUESTION TWO – BEN CRABTREE

Given their run of fixtures I currently have three Man City attackers (Bernardo Silva, Sterling and Aguero) – is this too much given possible rotation and the cost of the investment overall?

Ben: “I see it as a necessity to have three Man City players so that if they turn it on, as it looks like they will often, you maximise your chance for a share of the points.

“It looks like the build-up to Pep Guardiola’s team sheet is destined to cause palpitations but the stress can be reduced with maximum coverage.

“Aguero, Sterling and Bernardo Silva is a lot of money and the value of the outstanding Mendy, probably one of the more secure starters, means you should prioritise him pretty much over all other transfers.

“Aguero has to stay in your squad. Sterling looks the most sensible to remove given his omission against Huddersfield and the extra expense.

“However, he will come back in the team at some point and does have the potential to be a great explosive differential compared to Bernardo Silva who looks more susceptible to small scores in big wins.

“The safe move is probably Sterling to Hazard and get Mendy as your third City player. The ‘in it to win it’ move would be keep Sterling and change Bernardo Silva to Mkhitaryan.

“Rotation is a huge problem for us and owning great players that are certain starters is ideal. One or two rotation risks is okay, but many more and every week you leave yourself open to a disaster week.

“I don’t like the idea of a strong squad of 15 to cover many risky players due to too much money on the bench. £4.5m defenders can come to the rescue with potentially 6 points entering the fray.

“Throw in an element of attacking capability and the ceiling points potential is higher than most 5.5m mids.”

QUESTION THREE – LEE FROM FPL FAMILY

Who are the best Arsenal players to fit into your side with their upcoming fixtures so good? It’s tricky with lots of other in-form options in the early Gameweeks. For me, the only spots that could be a straight swap are Pickford (for Cech/Leno) and Aguero (for Auba/Laca), as I don’t feel like ditching any of Mendy, Robertson, Alonso, Salah, Mane, Bernardo, Richarlison or Zaha. What would you do?

Lee: “I was not at all convinced by Arsenal defensively against either Man City or Chelsea. Emery is asking them to play out from the back and they just don’t have the personnel to do it right now – Cech in particular.

“In attack though, Aubameyang is class. He hasn’t shown it yet – but he will.

“If like many though, getting him in means losing Aguero, I would be sticking with the in-form City man.

“The one player who does look good for Arsenal so far is Henrikh Mkhitaryan. If you can fit him in among those other big names, get him in.

“Otherwise, keep a watching brief and potentially be prepared to switch out the more expensive Mané or Bernardo Silva if the Arsenal man shows some serious form.

I think he may get benched next week. For me though it was all about him playing against Huddersfield at home as he was my captain. If he is benched next week then so be it but looking at the fixtures the main thing is he plays the home one's. While City are away for a while Liverpool are at home, so switching the armband between Salah and Aguero works ok.

Of course 2nd guessing Pep is difficult but I think at Newcastle there will be some changes to inject pace. Have a feeling Mendy and Aguero may get benched with Sane, Sterling, Jesus, Mahrez amongst the starters.

I think he'll want to preserve Mendy having been out for so long and Aguero is capable of picking up an injury at any time. After that it's two home games and that's where Mendy, Aguero and David Silva will slot back in.

I dunno, it was a fair assumption to say Sterling would cover Aguero, and that Aguero may not even play. If Sterling had have played then he would have gained his fair share of points. Vardy could have got one at Wolves instead of the red. You never know.

Definite tactic for Emery is the cut-back, v.similar to Barca (Alba) and City (Mendy) in particular. Expect a lot of midfield points for Arsenal when they get it right.

Not quite nailed on yet, but with the current set of players he does look first choice

Sorry i was bottomed on the previous article, i just wanted to highlight this:

For what its worth, if you alternate captaincy between Kun and Salah for the next 12 GW's you get this run of fixtures:

    3. Brighton (H)
    4. Newcastle (H)
    5. Fulham (H)
    6. Saints (H)
    7. Brighton (H)
    8. Liverpool vs Man City
    9. Burnley (H)
    10. Cardiff (H)
    11. Saints (H)
    12. Fulham (H)
    13. Watford (A)
    14. Bournemouth (H)

If aguero is as nailed at home as what people say, could be well worth keeping both for a run of captaincy choices such as these.

        What rotation risk ??
more likely to rest Jesus after world cup ,
Aguero effectively had the summer off in comparison
Its the midfielders that's a mine field at City

I dunno the stats by unless Pep goes 2 up top every game he's bound to be a risk. i'm not saying he aint 1st choice but if city go 1 uptop & pep wants to press... Aguero will get a few games on the bench.

Yeah true. Would mean only Salah as the big hitter in midfield. I'm definitely watching Hazard as i think Sarri will bring a more attacking (fpl) potential from him (see Mertens last year)

I don't necessarily agree with that. I Have:

        Hennesy, 4.0
        Robertson, Mendy, Daniels, Duffy, Wan-basika
Salah, B Silva, Richarlison, Kante, Gunarson
        Aguero, Zaha, Aubamayang

Pretty easy to get them in TBH.

I apprecaiate Kante is a bit of a punt but aside form that, my team is strong.

I could go Peltier > Alonso, however I would need to get a 5.8m midfielder to rotate with Ings, or get a 6.8m midfielder with Kamara sitting on the bench... thoughts?

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin

        7 years, 3 months ago

But how exactly is it calculated? For example Pedro has xG of 0.77 but xG on target 1.94. xG on target should be lower shouldn't it?

        1. Fantastisk
          • 7 Years
          7 years, 3 months ago

This article from the stats guy on Arseblog hemp odds explain how this can happen:

"An answer to a question that I get often: how can the shot on target xG be higher than the regular xG? That happens because they are separate models where with the regular every shot is assigned a value regardless of where the shot ends up. With the shot on target version, if a shot is blocked or misses it gets 0 xG but if it is on target it will have a higher corresponding value compared to the regular model. Over the full season the two end up very close to each other but over a single match the shooting accuracy can vary quite a bit and this helps to illustrate that."

I captained Salah because I feel he's so reliable. Even without those fake news, Aguero could have been benched. You just never now with Pep. Hats off to those who got 40 points, but I can see Salah getting brace no matter what fixture he plays. I think it is as much overthinking not to captain Aguero vs Hudd at home, as it is about Salah away at Palace.

He could blank, but so could Aguero. The GW isn't over yet.

Considering Bailly to Robertson and then Dilva in for worst performing midfielder.

Serious question to the FFS staff.

Who is writing the article titles? They used to be snappy and concise. Now they seem to be just stating the obvious and quite dumbed down (End of forwards? Aguero scores a hat-trick and Mendy gets two assists)

No offence to authors but they don't make inspiring reading.

Totally agree, most of the articles are lacking in quality this season.

Really miss Frisking The Fixtures too.

    From the article above:

Lee: “I was not at all convinced by Arsenal defensively against either Man City or Chelsea. Emery is asking them to play out from the back and they just don’t have the personnel to do it right now – Cech in particular..."

    Also see...

I think it just shows how it's easier to criticise when it goes badly, then the recognise when it goes well.

There's a reason teams play out from the back, due to the space and opportunities it creates.

Just like the "zonal marking at corners doesn't work" arguments we hear all the time, when all premier league teams adopt it

If I do B. Silva -> Mkhitaryan, I get 0.5 to splash around on the rest of my team. Would you:

    A) Upgrade Bednarek to a 4.5 def (Steve Cook or other)?
    B) Upgrade King (to Tosun or Zaha)?
    C) Upgrade Stephens (to Hughes/Kanté)?
    D) Save the 0.5?
    E) Other?

    Current team:
    Foster/Fabianski
Mendy Robertson Van Anholt Wan-Bissaka Bednarek
Salah Mané Richarlison B. Silva Stephens
    Aguero King Arnautovic

    RTM WC please.
    Pickford/Stekelnburg
    Alonso/Robbo/Mendy/AWB/Bennet
    Hazard/Salah/Fraser/Mikhi/Stephens
    Aguero/Zaha/Ings

or option with Auba/Pedro/Richa instead of Hazard/Mikhi/Zaha is better
    thnx in advance

but Schmeichel's backup cost 4,5 and i don't like play without playing backup

    Ederson
    Mendy,Alonso,Robertson,Cook,W-Bissaka
    Salah,Mkhitarian,Richarlison,__________,4.5
    Aguero,___________,___________

    1. Pedro,Firmino,Ings playing 3-4-3 with the option to choose between Cook,W~B and Ings for the last spot each week.
    2. Mane,Zaha,Kamara 4-4-2 Cook and W-B share the 4th defender spot. Slightly weaker bench than option 1.

right set up for this week do you think? Means shaw on the bench but would be typical mourinho to get a clean sheet in the next game...

    Hamer

    mendy / Robertson / Alonso

    Salah / Mkhi / Hughes / Richarlison

    Aguero / Auba / Ings

    Foster / Shaw / WB / Billing

    cheers

    Hi all,

Need some input over my next move:

    Pickford/stekelenberg
    Mendy/holebas/Cedric/Daniels/AWB
    Salah/mahrez/richarlison/fraser/4.5
    Kun/auba/zaha

Thinking of moving Daniels out for alonso seeming that I don’t have any Chelsea cover and his recent displays have been Uber attacking. Also looks like Daniels will eventually have to come out anyway due to the return of their new left back after GW3.

Is it worth taking a hit with moving mahrez out for a 6.9 > mf like Sessegnon? Kun and mendy adequate cover and mahrez subject to rotation ?

    Thanks

I'm going with 3 premium defenders from this week: Alonso, Mendy & Robbo. So we will see what happens.
It is easy to downgrade one of them if necessary. Boly and WB are other two defs.

Rest: Salah, Mkhi, Richa, Bilva, Cairney
      Kun, King, Arnie

Also tempted to sell Salah&Cairney after Brighton game and get Haz and Mane.
      Is that mad?

    Best use of 2FTs?

    A) King + Cairney -> Kamara + Mkhi
    B) King + Patricio -> Ings + Schmeichel + 0.5

    Patricio
    VvD Mendy PvA
    Salah Mané Bilva Rich
    Arnie Kun King
