The current top-scoring Fantasy Premier League midfield asset versus the record points holder for a single season. It needn’t be an either/or, of course, and plenty of FPL managers own both Sadio Mane (£9.9m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) at this stage of the campaign.

With Jurgen Klopp hinting at rotation, Liverpool’s fixtures about to take a turn for the worse – the Reds face Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City in the next four Gameweeks – and a premium midfield alternative in Eden Hazard (£10.7m) in a rich vein of form, however, some Fantasy bosses may be considering jettisoning one of these two heavy hitters in the short-term at least.

In this Members’ piece, we will compare Salah and Mane directly while also taking a look at both Liverpool midfielders’ wider appeal compared to the alternatives in their position.

    A good and timely article

I’ve been looking at the stats myself, and there’s one which this article fails to address: conversion rate

If one compares to last years stats, Salah is level pegging with shots / chances made ........ while his conversion rate is way down on last year

Mane, meanwhile, is way up on his conversion rate to last year

I haven’t seen all of Liverpool’s extended highlights this season, but I’m struggling to think that Mane became lethal on his summer hols, not that Salah was a one season wonder.

I’m sticking with salah as I expect an increase in his conversion rate (notwithstanding the opposition getting better over the coming month) and I’m toying with Mane > Hazard, as I expect Mane to regress

I mean, Salah should have converted his chance before the first goal, it was a sitter

What would be interesting to see would be their history of scoring against top 6 sides.

I agree with you Danish. It's only four games in so we could expect a deviation from longer-term conversion rates but given both these players are likely season keepers, injury notwithstanding, one would expect these long-term rates to reestablish themselves.

Does having Ederson and Mendy in my team too risky? Better off to just have 1?

I'd only have one unless they can show they can keep a string of cleanies which they haven't yet this season.

The argument usually is that Mendy can give attacking returns, while City's dominant playstyle denies Ederson of many save points. So if you're only paying that much for CS potential, you could find a cheaper keeper with much more upside in save points (e.g. last season Ryan and Fab). The million dollar question is which keeper and whether you have use for the extra cash.

Thinking of dropping Ederson in a few weeks after their fixtures aren't as easy. His returns haven't been as good as expected.

I remember the other half of the last season when the same story about Kane was going on like now around Salah.Holding the most expensive player in FPL coz of fear that he will punish them with another b2b hattrick. City mids, Salah, Son, Auba etc were the players who punished Kane's frightened protectors.Holding a player only because of fear of punishing is one of the most stupid things in FPL.

Fear without evidence is a problem. Except there is evidence to suggest that Salah is still smashing it.

    3. MTPockets

Salah has the stats + 2G/2A from 4 games. It's not fear, just that selling potential + points is way down my list of priorities.

If people captain salah and he hits big those without probably will have a massive rank drop depending on other players obviosly look at kun in the past he devastated non owners

I don't get why those selling Salah have to repeatedly make the fear/stupid argument, beyond reassuring themselves.
If their rationale is correct then in their interest to encourge others to hold.

Well it's easy to argue both sides of the argument using Kane.

Those that removed him before christmas because his price didn't justify his outlay were punished hard.

Actually, this is an even better example, because Kane's stats were outstanding at the time, just as Salah's are now.

I wouldn't. I'd say there's a very good chance your current team will outperform your proposed new team. Just look out for injuries and take single hits if you really need someone in/out.

My 2 pennies. The article does not mention that Sadio Mane has 17 goals in his latest 22 games for Liverpool. For me that's not form, that is a clear indication of consistency. If Mane does not have to deal with an injury, then the price difference between both simply is not justified.

There is no clearcut answer as to get both or one of them - it simply depends on your team structure, available funds and especially your comfort zone.

Again, I also think Mane could be a decent option this year in FPL, but I just don’t think his numbers and stats are sustainable.
It seems like your are skewing the stats a bit. Surely PL goals/involvement should be the most central to our discussion - of which he had a goal every 221’ minutes... Maybe he is overperforming, maybe he has improved. Either way let’s not just find stats that back up our personal opinion!

          Alonso, Robbo, Mendy (AWB, Bennet)
          Salah, Mane, Mhki, Pedro (CHO)
          Aguero, Arnie, Wilson

0.5 ITB. Great start. 304. OR 5,996. 0 FT. Did Peltier -> Bennet

Have exact cash to WC to this 352/442:

          Alonso, Robbo, Mendy (AWB, Bennet)
          Salah, Mane, Hazard, Fraser, Ward

Are you not worried about the weakness of your bench/ lack of flexibility to deal with injuries or rotations. Clearly if all the big boys keep playing then you are quids in but with the fixtures coming up, it is unlikely to be so rosy

Who would you prioritise to get in for BSilva next gameweek, Pedro or Maddison? I'm not playing my WC until later. Unsure whether to go for the security of Maddison or go for Pedro who is a rotation risk but perhaps better returns. Thanks!

I have the same problem. Was worried he wouldn't start the United game. But he made load of saves and saved the pen so don't see why he would get dropped now, that defense not exactly helping him.
I do think that Dyche is just waiting for a howler so he can get Heaton in, especially with Europe gone now.
I am looking to get rid as soon as a transfer allows

Leno could become a good option soon and he's currently only 4.8. As an Arsenal fan, I feel like Cech will be dropped soon. Has made many errors trying to play from the back. As for 4.5 options, Patricio and Ryan are the best options

Arsenal defence will improve once Mustafi is not in the team. Am hoping Mavropanos comes in for him soon to play alongside Sokratis. Mustafi is just awful.

Would be interested to know what proportion of the FFS league has activated WC.

You would think from reading on here that non-WCers are in the minority in general in FPL this week which makes me nervous as someone holding their WC but it surely can't be the case.

Wildcarders are more likely to post their RMWCTs here than non-wildcarders, so there may not be as many as you think.
This is a popular time to wildcard, but so is the second international break.

Depends on what you prefer longer term. Spurs looked unconvincing, so Robbo could get a CS and Alonso is favored to get one on paper. Mkhi and Maddison is a coin-toss, both have great fixtures, former with a slight rotation risk, latter unproven still. I think it comes down to whether you want Alonso long term (means you won't doubt him the first time he blanks), then Maddy is a solid enabler.

Am failing to understand the logic of ditching Liverpool front line for big games. they have spurs next which there is always goals and how both teams have started this season i have give Liverpool the edge to win this one. Next is Southampton, so if Liverpool go big at beating Spurs you're going to want to get them back in. Next Chelsea, they tend to struggle a bit a Stamford bridge but i still expect them to score. Am not convinced by Chelsea's back line after watching the Arsenal game they were all over the place and should have conceded more. Next up on the fixture list is Man city at home these lately have been goal feasts. i just goals and lots of them.

I agree, I have Firm Mane and Robbo and am think may ditch Robbo only. Liverpool will be top 2in my opinion and will score loads of goals so I don’t see the point swapping out players for one or two games when you will just want them back in a game or two

People are also factoring in CL/EFL fixtures, which are tough. But mostly agree with you - the argument for ditching defence isn't necessarily relevant to the front line.

I don't think rotation will be that much of an issue, Maybe the Southampton game. He's not going to rest players for spurs/city and Chelsea he will put his best squad out. I don't know whats going on in Klopps head, but this year Liverpool have started the season at a much lower tempo than last season. My thinking is he wants to keep the squad as fresh as possible..Am expecting a much higher tempo against chelsea/city and spurs.

I’m Wildcarding GW 9 just after they play city.

I have Robertson and Salah and I am taking out Salah to get Kane.

I think Kane will score way more until my wildcard so that’s my thinking for getting rid of Salah.

It feels like everyone is in a similar boat regarding cheap Mids. Has anyone done a summary of pros and cons of the options:
Please excuse the lack of stats, quite alot of my opinion, I don't have access to members area:

                Pereyra:
59% shot accuracy last season and similar so far this season
But 5 goals whole of last season and already 3 this season. so what has changed under Gracia?
Could it be that he is getting himself into better positions in order to score? if so then this would increase his potential as an asset.
Big question mark is can Watford keep it up, and my opinion is at least at home they will all season as the crowd seems right behind them. Poor fixtures but good form so its the old form vs fixtures.

                Fraser:
60% shot accuracy last season and slightly less so far this season, but only 5 goals all of last season and a poor 3 assists. He also appears to be 'overperforming' having bagged a goal already and an assist and 5 big chances created and if anyone has watched them he defo passes the eye test a lot more. so what has changed this season do we think?
Personally it just appears that Eddie Howes work is starting to pay off, anyone that has followed bmouth much in last couple of seasons has seen the slow improvement going forward and this year i believe they have created most chances from open play. Can they keep it up, im not sure but its a very good sign that they have created so many chances since as opposed to Watford , we are used to Bmouth attacking well consistently.
Better fixtures coming up too. I like the Fraser pick Long term too.

                Richarlison:
As we all know his shot accuracy dropped and dropped throughout the season, signs of him tiring which is what has been reported.
so its difficult to make comparisons, he is definitely more precise this season only 5 shots and 3 of them on target with goals.
I think he is pretty deadly under silva, and what impresses me the most is how he gets in the box on the end of crosses, great with his right foot and head.
if you watched them in the 1st 3 games, i feel like he plays with some intelligent players too (sigurdsson, tosun and schneiderlin)...i'm not saying the other options don't but Everton are becoming quite a creative team, (we are waiting for the gelling period still to end i believe, as opposed to bmouth and watford who are relatively well formed teams already). so because of this, Evertons potential does frighten me, richarlison could have a big season so out of the 3 i would say he is more of the 'risk worth taking'.
Look at it this way, he is a 6.7 'striker' basically...more deadly than wilson, deeney, murray etc (not mitro imo). if only it was that simple, i would pick him straight away...but obviously need to consider will he get as many opportunities as Wilson or Deeney who are on the end of most of what they create. For some reason i prefer the technically gifted players for FPL in my team. so i am definitely considering him.

thanks for this MT, really interesting read. Almost a shame that Wilson and Fraser are both playing for Bournemouth

Not sure. Have Walcott, Mkhi, Pedro so hoping to wait a week for a proper 2FT fix if needed. Already have Wilson so adding Fraser feels optimistic. Maybe Pereyra, as individual form seems to fit with improvement for team in general: http://www.plfantasy.com/2018/09/comparing-like-for-like-fixtures-and.html But honestly no idea atm as others like Silva need considering in a double switch.

                            we have similar thoughts

i currently have Silva , moura and Gundogan in those positions (given that Sal and Haz are non movers)

im sticking with Silva, looked great in last match and i think will be involved in everything good that they do.
so i think 1st move will be Fraser for Gundo and then in 2-3 weeks im hoping that we would have found out whether to keep Moura or not and then i would have made a decision between Pereyra or Rich to be my 5th.

....or i could just get Mane and Hughes and forget the lot of them! haha ..would be quite some midfield, Mane, Silva, Haz, Sal and hughes.

What i am understanding from the Table from the column, tells me the following players would be good assets to bring in (looking at CC's and SIB's):

                            - Pedro
                            - Zaha
                            - Wilson/Fraser
                            - Rich
                            - Pereyra/ Deeney

This is only providing that they maintain their form of course, Watford surely cant as they have tougher fixtures.
Bournemouth interestingly are not much better than last season, but this is almost a good thing sinceit means that you can rely that they are not over/under performing as opposed to Watford.
Palace and Everton i would put in same bracket, they just both seem to be creating a lot better than last year, better play, better management, creating more.
Chelseas form of football 'Sarri ball' seems to be working well, if only pedro was nailed. i already have Hazard and Alonso.

                            Conclusion:
                            bring in Fraser/Wilson and Rich
keep Zaha in mind maybe for after the bad run of fixtures (currently questions over his fitness)

Interestingly Liverpool not creating as much as last year, so i will stick to Just Salah and robbo for now.

                            Thanks !!!

Like that a lot! Good blend of nailed on players (even when champions league is back) & players not form top clubs who are massive for there team

I don't think kasper is worth the extra 0.5 over many of the 4.5 GKs although fixtures are in his favour.

The to have or not to have Mo Salah is a delicious debate with the irony that no-one will know until after the event.

Personally, having played my wildcard, Salah is still a set and stay pick and I can work a decent team around him. My regret is not also having Harry Kane but having the two of them does cause the team to collapse.

So for me, the debate is Mo or Harry and I'm going with Mo!

I agree, I WCed and kept Salah.. and honestly after settling into the team, I switched Salah to Mane and tried to figure out what I would do with the extra 3.0m, couldn't find a way to make the team that much better as only the players I would like to add would have been Kane and Lukaku and I wasnt able to without major restructure.. so keeping Salah for now at least..

Good article from Skonto Rigga. I do like these player comparisons.
