Jimenez hits Wolves’ winner but Doherty and Jonny catch the eye

Our review of the weekend’s matches continues with a look back at the Sunday lunchtime kick-off at Molineux, where Wolves defeated Burnley 1-0.

Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) scored the hosts’ winner on the hour, slotting a Matt Doherty (£4.4m) cut-back past the otherwise impressive Joe Hart (£4.5m).

Doherty and fellow Wolves wing-back Jonny (£4.4m) stood out from a Fantasy perspective, with their performances suggesting they will rack up both clean sheets and attacking returns throughout the season.

Wolves 1-0 Burnley

  • Goal: Raul Jimenez (£5.5m)
  • Assist: Matt Doherty (£4.4m)

If there were any lingering doubts that Wolves could hold their own against the Premier League elite – if Burnley can be described as such – then the dominant display that last season’s Championship winners delivered in their victory over the Clarets on Sunday would have dispelled them.

The narrow scoreline failed to reflect the West Midlands club’s almost total dominance: no club have had more attempts on goal (30) or shots in the box (20) in Gameweek 5 so far, while only Manchester City registered more big chances and penalty box touches than Wolves across the weekend’s matches.

Speaking after the match, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said:

Creating chances is difficult, but we produced a lot. We always have to improve. We’re going to work together to find the final touch. Talent exists; organisation we work on.

We scored one and that’s the most important. After we scored there was more space. The hard part of the game is to produce, to stay organised. And it’s two times we’ve kept a clean sheet.

The most important part is the way we played, how we controlled the game. It was a good game, no doubt about it.

After promising but understandably flawed displays in their first two matches of this season, Wolves had impressed in Gameweeks 3 and 4 with a draw against City and a last-gasp victory over West Ham United. Their performance against Sean Dyche’s troops was their best yet, however, with Wolves’ relentless pressing and direct attacking play unsettling Burnley throughout and reducing the visitors to a handful of limp attempts on goal.

Ruben Neves (£5.2m) is the only Wolves player who is owned by more than 10% of managers in Fantasy Premier League but based on what we saw at Molineux, Santo’s side are seriously under-represented in the Fantasy world.

Neves and Joao Moutinho (£5.4m) were a joy to behold in midfield. From a Fantasy perspective, their goal threat is somewhat limited: neither player had a single penalty box touch or shot from inside the Burnley area (as deep-lying “registas”, of course, this is not a failing on their part). Neves, as we have come to expect, was instead his usual trigger-happy self from distance.

Creatively though, the pair excelled. No player took more corner-kicks in Gameweek 5 than Moutinho, who appears to have the monopoly at indirect set-piece situations.

There wasn’t a single player in FPL who created more chances than Neves this weekend, meanwhile.

The Portuguese midfield pairing made more passes than any other player on show at Molineux and it was the two Wolves wing-backs who benefitted most from Neves and Moutinho’s raking diagonal balls out to the flank.

Jonny and Matt Doherty (£4.4m) were owned by no more 1% of FPL managers before kick-off, with the budget-freeing Ryan Bennett (£4.1m) the most popular route into this Wolves defence.

Doherty and Jonny though would appear to be the two names to monitor for those who like their defenders to come with an added goal threat.

No FPL defender registered more penalty box touches than Doherty (five) this weekend, with Jonny just one behind.

Both players had three attempts on goal (all of Jonny’s coming from inside the opposition area), with each registering one big chance apiece: Doherty being denied by Hart from close range and Jonny having his shot cleared from almost on the goal-line by James Tarkowski (£5.0m).

The pair also made three key passes each, with one of Doherty’s resulting in Jimenez’s match-winning strike.

The solidity of Bennett, Willy Boly (£4.5m), Conor Coady (£4.5m) and Rui Patricio (£4.5m) behind them suggests clean sheets will be a semi-regular occurrence too, with Burnley not allowed a single big chance during the match: only Liverpool have conceded fewer-clear cut opportunities than Wolves this season.

Boly’s recoveries, CBIs (Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions) and pass completion statistics earned him a bonus point, with the French centre-back also going close with a volley in the first half.

Wolves were profligate in front of goal, with Jimenez and especially his replacement Leo Bonatini (£4.9m) guilty of several glaring misses.

Jimenez at least keeps getting into himself into goalscoring positions (only two strikers have had more efforts on goal than the Mexican this season) and is the only genuine rival to Danny Ings (£5.7m) for those considering a budget second or third forward: Jimenez is the highest-scoring player in his position in the sub-£6.0m price bracket.

That Santo has named the same starting XI for five successive matches adds to Jimenez and his team-mates’ appeal as FPL assets.

Helder Costa (£4.9m) and Diogo Jota (£6.2m) had plenty of sights of goal, but neither player really convinces as a viable FPL midfield option at the moment despite their relative security in Santo’s line-up and their undoubted contributions to the Wolves effort on the whole.

From a Burnley point of view, there was little to cheer.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.9m) returned from injury to take his place on the left wing and was the Clarets’ main goal threat, registering more shots (none of which caused Patricio any bother) than any of his team-mates.

Matej Vydra (£5.9m) was a bright spark upon his introduction and the collective failings of Chris Wood (£6.4m), Sam Vokes (£5.4m) and Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) this season would perhaps suggest that the former Derby County striker isn’t too far away from a start in attack.

Vydra’s volleyed effort, which came within a whisker of being turned in by Jack Cork (£4.9m) at the far post, was the closest the visitors came to scoring on Sunday.

Dyche had rolled out a 4-4-2 for the first time in the league this season in a bid to pose more of an attacking threat, but the Burnley boss bemoaned his side’s lack of creativity in his post-match interview:

The better side won, first and foremost. But from our point of view the intention to play hard was there, and it was a poor goal.

We knew it would be a tough game against a team with a real connection and we did well in terms of our defensive play in terms of getting the blocks and clearances in, but we didn’t have enough on the offensive side of the game today.

That’s as a collective. There were too many misplaced passes and we gave the ball away cheaply far too many times and it’s like a fog has dropped onto the group.

Dyche was right to highlight the defensive contributions of his side, with Ben Mee (£5.0m) and especially Tarkowski throwing their bodies in the way as Wolves mounted attack after attack, but full-backs Phil Bardsley and Charlie Taylor (both £4.4m) had a torrid afternoon against Jonny, Doherty, Jota and Costa. Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (both £4.9m) may fancy their chances of a recall soon.

In the end, the Burnley backline was indebted to the efforts of Hart between the sticks, with the former Manchester City goalkeeper making several stops – the best of which was from Jimenez – to keep the scoreline respectable.

Hart has now made more saves than any other goalkeeper in FPL this season, simultaneously highlighting his own good form while drawing attention to the porous defence in front of him.

Burnley sit second in our Season Ticker for the next three matches, but with Dyche talking of a “fog” descending on the group, there seems little incentive in drafting in the Clarets’ FPL assets into our squads at this present time.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Neves, Moutinho, Jonny; Costa (Traore 66′), Jimenez (Bonatini 76′), Jota (Gibbs-White 88′)

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Hart; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Lennon, Hendrick (Westwood 79′), Cork, Gudmundsson; Barnes (Vydra 56′), Vokes (Wood 70′)

Is Salah to Hazard a points-chasing kneejerk, or a sensible move considering the wealth of options currently available to spread the funds to?

Is Fraser the real budget deal, or should we be looking at King/Wilson. Or even a double up? Bournemouth are the perfect mix of form, fixtures and value at the moment!

If you own Fraser, would you recommend:
      * doubling up on BOU attacking assets
      * spreading the risk and going for Mitro instead

      Cheers

        And another one:

        * What are your thoughts on Bernardo?

I wasn't able to watch Man C game. Heard he played well but was unfortunate not to deliver. His stats from the last game:
        0.7 xG, 0.71 xA (Understat)

I think a common dilemma for managers this week will be the 3rd / 4th midfielder. Quite a few options around there for people moving from Mkhitaryan, Bilva or Walcott (for example).

Fraser, Maddison, Richarlison, Schurrle ... even Pedro all viable options, so who's top of that list, and why?

Spurs and Arsenal assets are relatively less owned in comparison to the likes of Liverpool, City and Chelsea but they now have quite a lovely set of fixtures in the next 4. A new bandwagon looks likely to begin.

Is it a good time to ditch Liverpool assets for the likes of Kane, Eriksen, Moura, Lacazette, etc.?

Breaking away from the template- should or shouldn't

Everyone's going for holy trinity + awb + Bennett
      In mid, it's salah/mane haz 6.5-7.5 (pedro/lucas/rich) fraser n 4.5
      Kun zaha/mitro ings

With some uncertainties like kun n Mendy injury, should people stick or twist? And if we are to fit on Kane or kaku, who to sacrifice?

I think we should be talking about Wolves. Good options in each position. Doherty had lots of opportunities although his finishing was poor... Defence looks solid and settled. Neves and Jota were popular pre-season but that seems to be shifting. And for me if Adama Traore could start getting the starts he could be so explosive.

I got a sense that Sarri may finalyy have had enough of Morata. Does this make Giroud a nailed-on, great option at 7.8m? Chelsea looked much better balanced with him and Hazard together.

        Which teams?
Mainly these with new managers. Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, West Ham. Newly promoted teams also. What to comment about Guardiola rotation, Jose`s negativity or Pochetino`s settled team and tactic?
        Which players?
Mainly new signings and if any with hugely over- or under-performance from last season well known.

Mendy - Is his game time going to be impacted by that Sane goal, also considering City haven't kept a clean sheet in his last 3 appearances but have when he didn't play? (Not as many holes at the back)

        1. Can Richarlison rival David Silva for total points at the end of the season?

        Players...
I'd like to see a little bit of focus on the mid price midfielders. A comparison of Maddison, Richarlison, Schurrle, Fraser et al. For the brave, would it be worth doubling up in some cases (Mitro/Schurrle; Wilson/Fraser)?

        Teams....
Similar to the above - which of the mid-table maestros are worth backing in the next spell? Everton don't look quite so good right now, whereas Bournemouth and Wolves seem steady teams worth backing.

        Topics...
Death of the holy trinity or is it worth persisting with? Great when it comes off, but 19m of waste when it fails.

Aguero - hasn't scored outside of the Huddersfield hatty! Yet picked up 3 assists - does this show he has plenty avenues for points to be worth holding when Lukaku is a sure starter for United and picking up a goal most weeks? And when Hazard is getting returns every week? It's all relative...

Teams to discuss - Spurs. I planned to WC and bring in Spurs assets with their sea of blue (apart from MCI) until GW13. But are they investable? It's too kneejerk to say they are terrible because of back to back losses but they do look tired. Kane labors, the midfield is toiling, Moura is ok but under threat from Son and the defense rotates at a speed that would make Pep's head spin, not to mention looking a bit suspect with Vorm behind them (and that will be the case for a couple more GW's yet I think).

I think the talking point should be the champions league ( Manchester City and Liverpool) and europa league ( Chelsea and Arsenal) having effect for GW 6..example if Aubameyang starts midweek in the UEL, does that make Lacazette an option as well as Mkhitaryan..?

      1) Mendy possible replacement - 4.5 or another premium def
      2) Liverpool - rotation risk against Southampton
      3) Leicester vs Everton considering Richarlison comeback, good Leicester's fixtures and poor performance by both teams

Spurs could be a good team for a chat. Run of nice fixtures coming up. As Smurf says above their players are not as highly owned in comparison to other teams. Are they just starting slow again or is there a bigger problem? Is the defence worth a look even with full back rotation and the Lloris injury? The Son/Moura/Lamela conundrum. Is Eriksen an option after a couple of price drops? Is Kane worth a go or is he overpriced?

Kane is definitely overpriced for the long term imo, but we might be able to maximize his value in these 4 weeks. Salah costs almost the same price, so Salah owners will be really just be using those funds for Kane in 2 transfers with the rest of their team remaining as is. Shouldn't be done this week before SOU of course, but probably something to think about for next week.

Indeed Spurs haven't looked in form and form is more important than fixture, but wouldn't be a big surprise to see them regaining form against weak teams now. Moura has been in form though.

Firmino owners on the other hand could do a direct swap to Lacazette, who's passing the eye test and stats more than Auba.

      5 - 7 mill midfielders

      Wolves

Talking point - how much to spend on the bench (probably wildcard related) with potential for shocking rotation coming up ! Are players like steve cook and Holebas the level of quality we need alongside WanB for example. Are the days of 4.0 fodder gone ?

Could we make that 5.0 - 8.5 mil midfielders? 😛

Dilva, Ozil, Son, Pogba, Bilva, Ramsey, Sigurdsson and Mkhitaryan are all worth talking about, whether for buying or selling purposes.

With money ITB, I'm pursonally weighing up the benefit of downgrading a mid (e.g. Mkhi) for MORE money ITB for later use versus upgrading him to Ramsey/Son (or Bilva to Dilva), for example.

Team: Bournemouth, can they keep up their scoring form and who are the players outside of King, Wilson and Fraser that should be considered?

Players who have returned vs Everton: Neves, Ings, Wilson, Arnie

i.e if you have a team's main main man in your XV is it worth giving them the armband when they're playing the Toffees at the moment (Lacazette / Auba...?)

I don't see the reasons for having a team team talking point. If individual doesn't fulfill the criteria for a player talking point (form, fixtures, stats) then why reduce the resolution to discuss teams as a whole?

As a general talking point I'd be interested in classic cases received wisdom that are not necessarily well founded.

An example of this would be: last night I suggested a rotation of Maddison/Richarlison over the coming dozen games. I knew full well what the response would be but hoped someone might say something insightful. They didn't, just several posts saying 'too expensive'. Now, after investigation I'm not going with the rotation for several reasons that DON'T include player price. But nobody actually managed to provide any evidence or even anecdotes to support why that cannot be a viable short term strategy when the circumstances are correct

Indeed. This format gives it more structure and there's pretty much any issue we can cover under player, team and talking point. We can cover multiple teams and multiple talking points. Allows us to really get into specific issues too.

So for eg Wolves defenders will almost certainly get covered somewhere.. Could be players, could be under team...could even be talking point about moving funds out of defence and into budget options.

Talking Point: AWB (and/or Bennett), should he(they) be in starting XI’s + having someone else as fodder.

Should be downgrade our huge defences to player 1 prem/mid + AWB/Bennet + two others as fodder to afford all the firing forward options (Hazard, Pool, Sterling, etc)

Player: Hazard, is he still worth getting in - even for a hit? What about Richarlison - should we jump on him immediately?
Team: Wolves, they are starting to look like the real deal. Is it worth doubling or even tripling up. Alternatively a talk about Pool players - are Salah and/or Mane worth keeping?
Talking point: With prominent and highly owned players like Aguero, Mendy (and Arnie) potentially injured, are they worth holding on to with many cheap decent bench players or should we look to ship them?

    27. The Rumour Mill
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 7 months ago

Player: Hazard. A 20 point haul is hard to ignore but Hazard scored 3 goals from 4 shots against Cardiff and he is massively outperforming his xG and xA totals across the season. Meanwhile Salah and Mane had 9 shots and made 5 key passes between them against Spurs and both emerged with blanks. Is it worth getting in Hazard for one of these players or do you envisage a regression to the mean from him?

Team: Tottenham. About to start a superb run of 4 matches, but currently performing inconsistently and with an unsettled side. Their defensive statistics aren't much to write home about either (especially with Vorm in goal). Are there any Spurs assets worth investing in?

Talking point: Flagged players. Plenty of players currently flagged or have been in the past few days (Aguero, Mendy, Walcott, Fraser, Richarlison, etc). Whats the tipping point between holding them in your squad and hoping they recover, or getting rid? 1 match out, 2 out, 3 out? Does this change depending on their value?

Can Son spark this Spurs team (Kane especially) back to life with the solid fixtures coming up and is he an option?

How do you think Poch. will line up if Son starts and will it affect Moura? I've read on the boards that some feel both will possibly start. Has the lack of new blood left them a little stale?

Should people be looking to Sterling instead of Hazard?

Price is now very similar, Sterling is basically playing up front for Man City and is looking in fine touch, fixtures are far kinder for Raheem. Look for the next big thing not the one that just happened?

Only real negative is that Sterling carries more of a rotation threat but we've seen this week that autosubs can be pretty nice too 🙂

      - What mid-price mid to have (Richarlison, Maddison, Pedro, Moura etc).

      - Structure. Is is worth ditching options like Aguero, premium defense or Dilva to get Salah, Mane AND Hazard.

      - If his knee is fine, is Arna set and forget despite tough fixtures? Only Salah with more goals/assists in 2018...

Don't like the scoutcast mimicking the digest article structure.

Just answer the 5 best questions every week. If you wanted to be truly democratic, create a poll for the questions that people want you to answer.

This said, Wolves has to be the team of the week to discuss! 😀

Poll isn't truly democratic. For one thing, someone has to write the options for us to vote on. If it's Joe, the options will be: 1) Salah or No Salah?; 2) Which teams have good fixtures? Everybody gets 2 votes. 😉 Winky face for Joe

I'd like to suggest a talking point:
When should you take hits and when should you wildcard?
If you have injuries and there are players you want to bring in, at what point is an additional transfer worth it and when is the wildcard worth it? I think a lot of thought and discussion is put into "how many changes do you want to make" and not "how many of your current players are still good picks?"

Bournemouth. Is it too much to have two of their attacking players (or any midtable team's for that matter)? Great run of fixtures, Fraser looks great, one of King or Wilson a good cheap striking option. Could also make a case for one of their defenders. Before you know it 3 of your 12 starters are Bournemouth! (For the pedants - 12 as in 11 plus captaincy).

Aguero- 3 goals and 4 assists in 5 games is a great return but 4 games in 5 without a goal. Why is this? Is he playing deeper/Wider.

Based on this is he not as nailed as we think does that give us an option of moving to Kane- Auba-Lukaku?

      Players:
Sterling. Has 3 goals in 4 matches now and is not even being considered. Do we have to wait until he gets a round like hazard before he gets a mention?
DoherTY. What an asset! Quite clearly the best route in to Wolves attack and defence.
Wan Bissaka: should he played ahead of Sakho/tomkins if you went with the double at the start of the season. Should he be in contention to rotate in to the team for sports 9-11, and not just 11.
      Team:
Spurs. Who should we target ahead of their fixturerun? How about a deepdive in to how they rotated last time Champions League started.
      Talkingpoint:
Why are managers, seemingly, not managing their bench as ruthlessly as their managing their squad? Seeing mkhitaryan and holebas "kill" a lot of fraser, Wan and Bennet points, seems to paint a picture that a lot of us are playing "biggest upside" over "predicted returns" when managing the bench.

I just mentioned Sterling in my question Wesman... genuinely considering "downgrading" Mendy to one of the many great cheaper defenders and upgrading one of my midfield to Sterling. If all City players are going to be rotated, I would want Sterling because at club level, he's devastating, even for a short period on the pitch.

Not really opposed to those opinions mentioned below. If mendy should be considered a rotationrisk the same way Sterling, agu and Silva is, there might be cause to go without. Just seems to me that there are a lot of defenders that can serve as good replacements, and some of them for a lot less money. The "replacementplayers" in midfield/attack might not be as obvious when considering ras, agu and Dilva. Gonna be a very difficult selection once KDB is back Though.
If 3 pool and city is the way to go on a "seasonal" basis, my guess would be that TAA-Rob-Salah+Dilva-Ras-Agu would be better than Rob-Mane-Salah+Mendy-Dilva-Agu. Not sure how i would rate it with KDB in the mix though.

You should discuss Mendy. Why? Because I think from Pep's comments pre and early season, it sounded very much like he would start every game (and I remember the Scoutcast saying similar) and although it appears his absence was due to a knock and not rotation, the fact that Delph did well and the players comments after the game (as reported by David) implied City had two different types of defenders and would line up accordingly. Not to mention that with this line up, it's the first CS City have kept since GW1. Mendy is expensive and I don't think nailed whereas Robertson will play as will Alonso. It was pointed out to me that all City players are rotation risks but no other team has so many mid and striker options as City and Mendy is taking one of those slots. All defenders have ceilings with the possible exception of Alonso. It's not an equal cash spend but if all City players are up for rotation, it seems obvious to me that an Aguero, Dilva and Sterling trio will outscore Aguero, Dilva and Mendy if all are being rotated. There are lots of people with midfielders like Mané who are wondering whether to keep. You can downgrade Mendy to one of the many excellent cheaper defenders and upgrade a Mané or other to Sterling and play Pep roulette.

Would appreciate some discussion on fixture swing.

Time to reduce Liverpool? If so, where?
Wolves. Fixtures, but what assets should we go for/hold? Was all about Patricio, Jota, Neves pre-GW1.
      Aguero v Kane v Lukaku v Lacazette v Auba?
Will a power 5 emerge in midfield? Hazard, Maddison, Fraser, Lucas Moura, Dilva, etc
Is this the first season you cant get close to everyone you want?

Listening to Mondays Total Football Show Podcast Everton's upfront struggles are mentioned.

They put it out there that if Tosun continues to struggle we could see Richarlison OOP upfront (as he was for Brazil). If we see this he's going to be a massive asset right?

Are the Scoutcasters getting him back in and when?

I'd also like to hear about the option of 3 Mid priced forwards with more of that money then being put into midfield, with Aguero's knock and all the great 5.5 - 7.8m options it has got me thinking about it. If Giroud holds his spot he could be a great pick @ 7.8m

Aguero, Mendy and Arnautovic all flagged - 2 FT - worth using any on this lot?

Wait on news for the City pair. Personally want them both long term so hoping my bench can cover a GW6 absence, and they could come back for BRI.

I'm moving Arnie on this week - 3 out of next 4 are tough, and there's clearly a minor issue he's struggling to shake off.

Not for me, Aguero & Mendy could quite easily start next GW & you will only want them back even if they are out for 2 weeks anyway imo.

Arnie maybe, but I would hang on after yesterday

    Early GW6 move planning.

Mkhi is a goner, and will leave me with at least 2.7M itb to change Arnautovic for a hit. Fairly settled on this plan as it preserves my wildcard, which I don't think I need to use just yet - own most of the 'essentials'.

    A) Arnie to Mitrovic (-4)
    B) Arnie to Lacazette (-4)

    arnautovic* - aguero* - zaha
