Knee injury taints Arnautovic display as Walcott blanks again

Our coverage of the weekend’s matches continues with a look back at the events at Goodison Park, where West Ham United ran out surprise 3-1 winners to lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) served another reminder of his appeal as a mid-priced Fantasy Premier League forward despite the Hammers’ poor run of form and fixtures, though the Austrian limped from the field just after the hour mark with a knee injury that the striker himself said is “hurting a little bit”.

Theo Walcott (£6.7m) won his own fitness battle to take his place in Marco Silva’s starting XI, but the Everton winger left his legions of FPL owners disappointed for the second Gameweek in a row with another blank.

Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.8m) was instead the headline-making act on Merseyside, scoring the Hammers’ opening two goals on his first league start for his new employers.

Everton 1-3 West Ham United

  • Goals: Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) | Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.8m) x2, Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m)
  • Assists: Jonjoe Kenny (£4.3m) | Marko Arnautovic, Mark Noble (£4.9m), Pedro Obiang (£4.4m)

The debate over form versus fixtures has reared its head in recent weeks, most notably when discussing which/how many Liverpool assets are necessary for the Reds’ current tricky sequence of matches.

Marko Arnautovic’s 12-point haul at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon was a reminder of his own ability to accrue points no matter how “difficult” the fixture.

The Austrian delivered attacking returns in away matches against Chelsea and Arsenal in the final six Gamweeks of 2017/18 and his rate of goal involvements per minute was actually superior on the road last season.

That Arnautovic is ranked joint-third for points among FPL forwards this campaign – only the more-heralded Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) are ahead of him – despite playing in a side that was pointless before Gameweek 5 and languishing near the bottom of our Season Ticker is a testament to his Fantasy appeal.

Granted, Arnautovic will seldom come up against a defence as obliging as Everton’s. Beset by injury problems and without Seamus Coleman (£5.3m), Yerry Mina (£5.4m) and Michael Keane (£4.9m), the Toffees were cut open time and time again by the Hammers on the counter-attack.

The Merseyside club are one of five top-flight teams without a clean sheet this season and indeed a side managed by Marco Silva hasn’t recorded a shut-out in 16 matches.

Mason Holgate (£4.5m) and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) had a particularly torrid afternoon at centre-back, the pair being all-too-easily bypassed by a looping Pedro Obiang (£4.4m) through-ball that set Arnautovic free for West Ham’s opener – the former Stoke City man unselfishly squaring for Yarmolenko to finish from close range.

Obiang and Arnautovic combined nicely for West Ham’s third goal, with Holgate again culpable as Arnautovic finished the one-two by prodding past Jordan Pickford (£5.0m).

Pickford had been partly responsible for Yarmolenko and West Ham’s second strike, with the Ukrainian winger capitalising on some poor distribution from the England goalkeeper to curl home the goal of the match.

When asked about the extent of his injury, Arnautovic said:

I don’t know. We have to check now, it’s not my calf, it’s behind my knee. It is hurting a little bit. We are checking this week how it is going and we will see.

The positive signs were that Arnautovic was able to walk from the field and put weight on his affected knee but the coming days should tell us if the injury is anything other than minor. A spell on the sidelines would be a blow to the Hammers given Arnautovic’s talismanic role: the Austrian has been directly involved in four of West Ham’s five goals this season and seven of their last ten stretching back to the end of 2017/18.

From a Fantasy perspective, Arnautovic’s returns might have been considered fortuitous: his goal and assist coming from just one attempt on goal and a solitary key pass. Only two strikers have had more penalty box touches than Arnautovic over the course of the season, however, and the West Ham forward is averaging a chance more often than the likes of Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), Cenk Tosun (£6.9m), Callum Wilson (£6.3m) and Josh King (£6.3m) in the mid-price bracket.

Yarmolenko’s brace also came from the Ukrainian’s only two shots on goal, with the former Borussia Dortmund and Dynamo Kyiv winger not creating a single chance all match.

The knee-jerk reaction to Yarmolenko’s performance in FPL has been sensibly modest, with less than 4,000 managers snapping him up at the time of writing, and much more evidence will be required before we talk about him as a viable mid-price midfield option.

The Hammers’ summer signing looks to have nailed his place on the flank in the short term at least, with Pellegrini having this to say about the Ukrainian wide-man and his patient wait for a first start:

He arrived late in the pre-season with us and that’s why we didn’t start him in the Premier League so far, because he needed to improve a lot with the pace.

He has a lot of quality and he has demonstrated that in every game, but he was not ready to play in the Premier League after he just arrived.

We were patient with him, talking with him, working with him and I’m very happy for him that today when I thought he was ready he demonstrated it.

Yarmolenko was one of six changes made by Pellegrini to his starting XI, with the all-new central midfield three of Obiang, Mark Noble (£4.9m) and “out of position” Declan Rice (£4.4m) impressing in the engine room. Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m) and Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) also returned at full-back.

Silva meanwhile made only two alterations to his line-up, with Jonjoe Kenny (£4.3m) replacing Coleman at right-back and Idrissa Gueye (£4.9m) returning from injury to oust Tom Davies (£5.4m) from the double-pivot.

Theo Walcott also won his fitness race to be included in the Everton starting XI, although his remaining owners (Walcott was the second-most-sold player of Gameweek 5) might have wished he hadn’t after another blank in which he had only one shot on goal and didn’t create a single chance.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) headed in Everton’s only goal of the match just before half-time, with the Icelandic midfielder nodding home Kenny’s cross – the second successive season in which the 21-year-old full-back has provided an assist in a home match against West Ham.

Kenny and Lucas Digne (£4.8m) were rare bright sparks on an otherwise wretched afternoon for Everton, with both providing some dangerous deliveries from the flank: Digne denied two assists when the disappointing Tosun could only head his pinpoint cross straight at Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) before substitute Oumar Niasse (£5.3m) blazed another Digne centre against the bar.

Digne created more big chances, made more key passes and sent over more crosses than any player on show at Goodison Park yesterday, with only Sigurdsson having more shots than the Everton left-back. Digne was also prominent at set-piece situations, taking both indirect and direct free-kicks.

Available for only £4.8m, he would ordinarily be a defender to consider given his underlying attacking statistics – but Everton’s dearth of clean sheets and the continual risk of rotation with Leighton Baines (£5.4m) means he remains far down on the watchlist.

Sigurdsson’s sudden propensity to open fire bucked the trend of the season so far, with five of the Icelandic midfielder’s seven shots in 2018/19 coming on Sunday afternoon.

Bernard (£5.9m) showed glimpses of promise after his introduction on the left flank just before the break, with Silva switching from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 in a bid to peg back the Hammers’ two-goal advantage.

Richarlison (£6.6m) served out the final match of his suspension and, along with Bernard, will now come into contention for the trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 5 – Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m) and even Walcott’s starting places could be at some risk at the Emirates next weekend.

Everton (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Kenny, Holgate, Zouma, Digne; Gueye, Schneiderlin (Bernard 44′); Walcott (Lookman 77′), Sigurdsson, Calvert-Lewin; Tosun (Niasse 69′)

West Ham United (4-3-3): Fabianski; Zabaleta, Balbuena, Diop, Masuaku; Noble (Sanchez 71′), Rice, Obiang; Yarmolenko (Snodgrass 82′), Anderson, Arnautovic (Antonio 64′)

I asked this on the weekend, but got very little response. Does Giroud starting and playing the full 90 for Chelsea mean that Sarri has finally given Morata enough chances. Chelsea looked good with Giroud on and I think he commits defenders more than Morata, which opens up space for Haz/Pedro/Williams. If he does become nailed on he looks like a great value differential at 7.8m, IMO.

If Giroud was nailed in then he's straight in my team tbh.

My suspicion is that Sarri is putting more emphasis on the PL than Europa. I expect Morata to play Europa, if my suspicion is correct, and Giroud to start the PL matches...

I'd agree with that. Risky but if Morata starts midweek then you have to assume Giroud for now is a starter in league

Too risky. They will probably rotate but yes at 7.8m, Giroud is a stela.

Yes - I know its only one data point but I got the sense that Sarri was checking if Giroud could do a full 90mins, with future starts in mind. Girouds attacking stats were generally much better in 90 mins (albeit against Cardiff) than Morata in the previous 4 games.

Absolutely no place for Giroud I don't think. Zaha, Wilson, King , Mitro, Arnie, Jimenez, Deeney, Ings and Tosun arguably all better picks.

Did he not play the world cup for the winning side without a shot on target or something absurd like that ?

Possibly - but of those players you mentioned, only King has scored 16 goals in a season, which Giroud did fairly regularly before his limited game time last year. Giroud outscored Firmino up until last year, and seems good value at 7.8m if he starts in this Chelsea team.

I just don't think he's a goal scorer any more unless he really proves otherwise.

True but if you own say Mitro for 6 of his goals, Wilson for 6 and Mitro for 6, I know it's partly luck but you can technically get more goals playing the fixtures than having Le Donkey haha

Obiang was playing furthest forward of the 3 west ham mids yesterday. If he keeps his place and the team carries on playing like that he could be a good option, is 4.4 at the moment

Your options as far as i'm informed are:
-Ward, 4.5, oop striker but not sure if he's 100% nailed
-Billing, 4.5 (4.6 soon), COM, guess he's nailed
      -Hojbjerg, 4.4, CM, nailed
-Stephens, 4.4, CDM, nailed i'd say
-Obiang, 4.4, CM, played well yesterday and quite offensive

I'd go with billing, he'll get an increase soon and plays an important role as COM. I'm not sure about ward but he'd bee my number 2. Hojbjerg and stephens are a bit risky imo, obiang played well, but played against a terrible everton...

Difficult to judge ... some wild carders likely dropped him too and his price does seem to be held back by FPL more than most.

Possible drop this week though for sure....imo a bit of a dangerous move for sellers [this particular week] as most of the 50 odd % who keep him will captain him !

If anything guys like Firmino, Eriksen may get a rest in CL plus league cup game. Salah, Hazard, Alonso, Kaku, Kane etc normally play all games.

Ings over Wilson to get Kun in or Laca over Firm.. you have options to get kun in (well guess if this is a wildcard)

Doherty or Holebas look good, Rico maybe. Newcastle rotate well with AWB/Palace though, so I might go Lascelles or Yedlin.

Salah has much higher ownership. If someone has 10k owners and 1k sell him, he drops. Salah needs a much higher amount of sales for this to happen.

I’m going to track FPL statistics and make a decision later in week. Haven’t really researched on Mendy injury yet and got a decent bench.
      Aguero could go to Kaku?

If Mendy is going to miss more than a couple of games, I'll switch to Walker. Aguero's injury doesn't look to be serious. But again, if I have to, I'll go for Lukaku.

In the meantime, I'll contend myself with Bennett & AWB who are on my bench for the next 2 GW's.

    Champions League Fantasy

Are you playing Champions League Fantasy?

Have you played in the past? What is your strategy? What formation do you go with? How do you balance big hitters?

For those who have signed up already, what does your team look like? Who are you sure you'll be starting with?

Do you have any tips for people new to the game?

      Guilherme
      Kimmich, Walker, Akanji
      Asensio, Sterling, Robben, Coutinho
      Messi, Lukaku, Aboubakar
      /Olsen, Wolf, Nagatomo, Leite/

Olsen and Nagatomo are best 4.0 enablers imo. Asensio and Isco also bargains

If someone is interested to play in ML, check my past messages...

Strategy: Having at least 1 good C option for each day. Formation; nailed 15 players for manual subs...

Running for 3rd year in a row, got punished with injuries last season for wildcarding week2 for good matchups so keeping a joker this year for eliminations, using cinderella joker in group phase (md5 prolly). Generaly i like to spend more cash with up to 4 premium assets from great clubs who do not concede much (atletico, barcelona, psg, city, roma, juventus) but these year besides kimmich and mendy (who i just ditched due to injury at least for day1) i do not have any i like so much (do not fancy real as they always concede so basically need marcelo or ramos to assist or score to make buck which for 6.5 i would rather pass). Also try to keep balanced team between the two days so 1gk from group a-d and 1 from e-h. and remaining 13 players to split 7-6 between the days for better sub options.
General rule was do not even try playing without cr7 aka mr. champions league but his prolific carrier has not continued as well in juventus as in real so i will be going with messi this year but going both might be good also.
Current draft (might change based on line-up news today):
      Ter Stegen - Olsen
      Kimmich - Roberto - Sule - Akanji - Diallo
      Sterling - Mane - Zielinski - Marlos - Mantalos
      Messi (c1) - Lewandowski (c2) - Moraes
subs for day 2: out akanji and zielinski, in mendy and milner

Some other interesting players on cheap/medium price:
Cancelo, Semedo, Meunier, Stepanenko, Ziyech, Under, Witsel, Brahimi, Aboubakar, Rodrigo Moreno, Mandzukic

Think there's a definite threat from Lookman, Bernard and Richarlison for his place - but also think Tosun should be worried.

Why are you not keen on using FTs to clean up your bench? CL starts in a few days.

Probably more important moves for that FT, hit isnt worth it and WC is time to do that clean up.

Any Bayern fan or Bundesliga follower know anything about Goretzkas injury and his chance of starting in CL?

mkhi to richarlison as you have no richarlison entry plan the following week

I did mkhi > fraser to fund ings > mitro

but the following week i can do pedro > richarlison on a free

Take a look at Maddison, great fixtures

I keep stopping myself going for Maddison. Three relatively fortunate returns has my cynical, suspicious brain doing somersaults. Surely it can't continue.

I'd be wary of Richa. Everton looked pretty woeful yesterday

he's definitely an upgrade on the dreadful DCL. Bernard looked lively. One to watch for me.

Good morning folks, does anyone think I should wildcard this?

    Ederson
    Mendy*/Robertson/kabesele/docherty/AWB
    Salah/mane/Walcott/Micky/cairney
    Aguero*/zaha/ings*

Will do Walcott to rich this week for free but If aguero and mendy both out do you think I should wildcard?

Time to WC or try hold it one more week? Had 10 players last 2 weeks and bench is looking very weak again with injury concerns in my team

    Foster
    Mendy* Alonso TAA AWB
    Mane Pedro Salah(c) Dilva Richa
    Kun*
    (Fabi Ings* Madine* Peltier*)

Not worth a WC imo, Kun injury is minor, Mendy's didn't seem serious based on his tweet. If they were fit you'd most likely want them straight back in. If you swapped Madine for someone to cover Mendy not being cleared you'd be right.

Then again, is there any reason to save it, waiting for fixture swing?

Arghh that bench though. . . . . I'd consider a WC if I were you. Madine nowhere near the first team, as is Peltier. Ings not eligible for next week has really made your squad depth in dire straits. Your XI is really great, but friggin hell, rotation is going to kill you.

Are people getting a little fooled by wolves performance yesterday? It was against Burnley who have been worst team in league so far this season! Fixtures ain't too great either imo

They looked good in previous games too like vs City.
      They can finish quite high.

Yeah they have some real quality about them no doubt I'm just wondering if we bigging them up too much..

Home games looks good to me and they are cheap enough to bench

Have only Bennett, so not expecting much anyway 😛

I'll be bringing in Bennett or Doherty as a makeweight for hazard.. be on the bench more often than not though.

    HI guys,

on wildcard this week and got 73pts.was really sad that i put maddison as the 2nd bench instead of first.

    patricio
    mendy trippier alonso holebas
    hazard(C) mane moura
    zaha wilson aguero

    subs: begovic neves, maddison wanbissaka

looking at my team here, for the upcoming week do you think i shld sell moura for fraser or stick to my team?

i should be captaining MANE this week.
