Salah and Mendy increasingly shunned by top 10,000 FPL managers

Mohamed Salah and Benjamin Mendy have become less fashionable options to own according to the current top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

Both players have seen their popularity in that bracket fall going into Gameweek 7, as the Liverpool man blanked again and Mendy did not play once again.

We continue to look at how the top managers are lined up for the latest round of matches Gameweek 7 and how that compares to the overall trends.

Most Selected Players

The most popular line-up for the top 10k managers sees the departure of two main stars for the first time this season. Salah and Benjamin Mendy both made way this week for more popular options such as Richarlison (47.8%), Ryan Fraser (49.6%) and James Maddison (47.5%) in midfield. Meanwhile, Kieran Trippier (41.1%) and Ryan Bennett (32.7%) increased in popularity in defense. Suddenly Salah has become as a huge differential in the top 10k.

However, his overall ownership (in the sample) still makes him the second most-owned midfielder with 41.65%. His team-mate Sadio Mane features in the most selected team for both samples, as well as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcos Alonso, Andrew Robertson, Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero and Aleksandar Mitrovic; all in-form players.

The overall teams have a greater concentration of Harry Kane ownership, as many managers started the season with him already, which is the same story with David de Gea.

The stats suggest that we might be about to witness a large swin in player ownerships, with Salah and Mendy especially shaking things up.

Selling them has allowed more managers to contemplate investment in the likes of Hazard, Kane and Trippier as well as cheaper options from Wolves, Bournemouth and Leicester.

This, in addition to European competitions taking more of an effect, may cause the very successful early season “template” to be broken up and create more interesting different alternatives.

As expected, the Wildcard chip is the only one that has significant usage this week with 4.6% of the top 10k managers activating it. This raises the percentage of Wildcards used to 55.3%.

If we compare the chip usage of the top 10k and a sample of 50,000 managers outside of that bracket, we see that the top players of FPL are much more lenient in using their Wildcards early. This is perhaps what helped them reach that high rank early on.

Only 29.7% of the overall sample had activated their wildcards so far, as compared to the 55.3% of the top 10k.

Chip Usage

However, the overall usage of the Triple Captain and Free Hit chips are actually higher than the top 10k percentages. This might be an indication on how little an advantage those chips give earlier in the season.

As a result of those Wildcard deployments, it has now come to pass that the majority of the top 10k have used one chip. 47.3% of managers in that bracket have used that many so far, while 37.1% are yet to deploy any chip.

Meanwhile, the majority of overall teams have not used chips yet. 55.3% of these managers still have their chips intact.

Captains

When it comes to captaincy for Gameweek 7, both samples opted for Aguero as the top choice. However, the top 10k had much more faith in him with a captaincy record so far this season of 83.35%, while the percentage for the overall sample was less than half of that: 40.35%.

Overall players still saw Salah (13.22%) and Kane (12.82%) as important captaincy choices this week.

Yep. Soon gonna be recognised as essential, even by his die hard haters, and he is becoming expensive. Big advantage for those who got him at 10.5.

This. Those who got him and Alonso have a real advantage in TV assuming they won’t be held for the season.

The TV advantage vs late buyers is greater if they are held for the season.

    A) Wilson + Kun + DSilva --> Vardy + Kane + Lennon (-4)

    B) Kun + DSilva --> Kane + Maddison

Will likely change Smalling to TAA the week after if I choose A, Smalling to Robertson if B.

    Appreciate the advice!

Finding it difficult to see the logic in Aguero > Kane.. Seems like a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. Granted Kane is likely to play a full 90 compared to Kuns 60-65 but Aguero is on top form this season and more explosive with better value.

Main reason I'm considering it is captaincy for gw8, can't fully convince myself to be ok with (H)azard, so a short term move for Kane makes sense, especially when we know Kun is carrying a niggly foot injury at present, that is getting him subbed off early. If Kun is 100% fit for southampton in gw11, I'll get him back then. Can't see him exploding v any of Liverpool, Burnley, or Spurs.

Plan would involve Downgrading Robertson to Doherty and then bringing Robertson back in for Trippier gw9.

I can understand that but I see people taking hits to take Kun out after a decent display by Kane.. Feel like it's all a little bit rash but I guess that's the nature of FPL!

Is it still considered kneejerk if you planned to do it before Kane's brace by downgrading a midfielder to free up the funds and doing it on a FT this week?

Honestly, each to their own, but that sounds like such a dullard way to play the game if you can't see the logic. It's 60 mins of Aguero away to the best defence in the league, or 90 mins of Kane at home to the worst team in the league.

You won't captain Aguero, but you will captain Kane, as will everyone who owns him. Kane can score a hat-trick in that game without it really being a shock. It's a genuine opportunity to pick up 20+ points on those playing it safe / scared to sell Kun.

For me, the whole game basically comes down to these decisions of whether to be proactive or not. The more you get right, the higher the rankings you'll climb. I'm currently sitting inside the top 3,000 and I have no intention of playing it safe. Same logic I applied to benching Alonso this week to play Doherty and PVA, go with gut and fixtures.

Aguero > Kane (C) on a FT, locked in (well, later in the week anyway).

I'd captain Aguero against any team. He's a player.

Go for it then. The captaincy decision is far more complex than "will he score?" Of course Aguero can score against Liverpool, he can score against anyone. He probably will score a goal. But is he more likely than Kane to score a hat-trick next week? No, not even close. Nailing a big captaincy haul is huge in this game.

Fair enough if you don't make the move yourself, but to say that you "don't see the logic in it" just makes me think you must be a very passive player and completely risk averse. Then again, Kane (C) at home to Cardiff is not really a risk at all!

I can't get my head around all of these tactical geniuses. These progressive and attack-minded fantasy premier league masterminds. Makes me wonder question why I choose to be such a passive player.

I like it. It's what I want medium to longer term as well, although not currently feasible. But I'll be working towards the same 3 if possible. A front line of Arnie + Mitro + Jiminez/Wilson looks really good and flexible to me. Stack that midfield.

I made a rough 'outside the top 6' squad.

Those with good/fixtures and those that are critical to thier team.

Leaves about 17m in the bank.
I think that team could do well.
It got me thinking is there too much focus on the top 6 teams in fpl?
There are loads of good cheaper options from other teams.

    1. Ceci

Looks good, player from top 6 is not a bad option if he is the major threat for that team. Lot of players chased are 3rd or 4th choice offensive options on those teams and are only considered because they represent a certain team 😉

Exactly then they either do not perform as well or do not start.
I just created the team as an easy visual so I remember the teams with good fixtures and the key players.
But as you say just shows that the top 6 sides players are really more for piece of mind then anything else.

That is why still some teams are carrying B.Silva and Pedro's in their teams when there are nailed on important players in mid table clubs who will more or less match and most important you don't need to wait for lineup's.
