FPL’s best defences win out in Anfield stalemate

Liverpool and Manchester City both recorded their fifth clean sheets of the season as the much-hyped Gameweek 8 clash at Anfield ended goalless.

While it was a disappointing afternoon for those Fantasy managers fielding attacking assets from either side, anyone who gambled on a Liverpool or City defender were the big winners from an ultimately underwhelming encounter on Merseyside.

Spot-kicks are the obvious Fantasy talking point, namely Riyad Mahrez‘s (£8.6m) skied effort from 12 yards on 85 minutes and who assumes penalty-taking duties for Liverpool if James Milner‘s (£5.7m) hamstring injury keeps him out for an extended period of time.

Our latest set of Scout Notes picks out the best of the action from the Sunday afternoon match between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola’s title-chasing sides. It shouldn’t be a long article…

Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City

That Sergio Aguero (£11.3m), Roberto Firmino (£9.4m) and Sadio Mane (£9.9m) failed to register a single attempt on goal between them at Anfield on Sunday encapsulated the frustration felt by Fantasy managers who owned any of the attack-minded assets on show.

Aguero, indeed, had only one penalty box touch all match before his now-customary withdrawal just after the hour mark.

No Premier League match in 2018/19 saw fewer first-half shots than this encounter between the two title favourites, while the fact that the ten players who recorded the most passes in this fixture were all defenders or anchored in central midfield was a somewhat damning indictment.

Praise should be given to the two sides’ defences though, who succeeded in doing what no other Premier League team has managed this season in preventing Sunday’s opponents from scoring.

No top-flight club has recorded as many clean sheets (five) or conceded fewer goals (three) than City or Liverpool this season, while City have conceded fewer big chances than the other 19 clubs in the division.

Guardiola’s troops didn’t allow their opponents a single clear-cut opportunity yesterday, the first time the Reds have been prevented from registering a big chance in a league match this season.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.7m) and John Stones (£5.3m) were superb at the back for the visitors, while Kyle Walker (£6.6m) shackled Mane out of the match completely and the returning Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) demonstrated discipline in a more orthodox left-back role.

Guardiola praised his backline after the match:

We didn’t concede many shots on target so this is key at Anfield and is quite special in terms of the environment.

From all actions, from corners and free kicks, they’re so tall and are stronger than us but we defended well, the back four was so good in their positions.

As a team you know they would punish our mistakes, and at the back four we controlled it very well.

As we have mentioned before, Laporte has assumed the Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m) mantle of 2017/18 in being the permanent fixture at centre-half and kept up his ever-present record in the league this season at Anfield. For those Fantasy managers wanting a route into this watertight City defence that limits the risk of rotation, then Laporte is the obvious candidate.

The French centre-half’s rate of chances is also better than one per match, a healthy average for an FPL defender.

Where Laporte fails to match Otamendi’s appeal is on the Bonus Points System. Otamendi accumulated 21 bonus points last season, while Laporte has failed to register a single one this campaign despite finding the back of the net once and recording five clean sheets.

While the fit-again Mendy failed to register a key pass, shot or penalty box touch, easier tests await in the coming weeks and we can expect those underlying statistics to soon return to their usual high levels. He was not alone in having his attacking instincts reigned in by Guardiola for this fixture, with Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) forced back into a deeper position alongside Fernandinho (£5.4m) in a 4-2-3-1.

It was noteworthy that Mendy came straight back into the starting XI after his return from injury – though whether this would have been the case had Fabian Delph (£5.3m) been deemed fit to play is another question.

One pattern that continued on the left flank though was Leroy Sane (£9.2m) dropping out of the team upon Mendy’s inclusion. The German winger had been in decent form in Mendy’s absence but Guardiola has famously been averse to fielding both players in the same starting XI and Sane was the fall guy here.

For those considering a move for Mendy after his recovery from a foot problem, however, the Sane/Delph partnership has at least proved itself a viable alternative to the gung-ho Mendy over the last month and could very well be sporadically employed in the league as Guardiola juggles with other competitions in midweek.

Raheem Sterling (£11.1m) was instead used as an inverted winger on the left flank, but it was the man stationed on the opposite wing who was at the centre of most of City’s goalscoring opportunities.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) will be remembered for his blazed spot-kick in this fixture but he was City’s main goal threat, forcing Alisson (£5.6m) into his only two saves of the match and outmuscling Andrew Robertson (£6.3m) to fire narrowly wide of the Brazilian goalkeeper’s post on 60 minutes.

Mahrez has now missed five of his last eight penalties, but Guardiola was supportive of the Algerian winger after the match and hinted that he would be given further opportunities from 12 yards whenever Aguero is absent:

He had the courage and the balls to take the penalty. In training, he shoots perfect penalties but sometimes it happens. The usual taker is Sergio Aguero but he wasn’t there.

I am in the training sessions and I see him training every day with penalties and he gave me a lot of confidence. It will be a good experience for him, next time it will go in.

The player himself was positive at full-time:

I made the decision to shoot in the middle – the ball went up.

It won’t affect me at all. Everyone misses penalties, even big, big players. Of course I wanted to score to help the team to win.

Seeing Mahrez step up and sky his effort into the Anfield Road Stand capped off a miserable afternoon for Aguero and his owners, with the Argentinean striker – the second-most captained player of Gameweek 8 – blanking for the first time since Gameweek 3.

Aguero is now averaging only 2.75 FPL points per away fixture (compared to 10.25 per match at the Etihad), but like so many of the attack-minded players on show at Anfield, it is perhaps best to disregard Aguero’s anonymity yesterday given the difficulty of the fixture.

For Aguero, read Mane, Firmino and Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) – though there is evidently something not quite right with the Egyptian’s radar this season.

Barney Ronay’s piece in the Guardian summed up Salah’s performance nicely. Last season’s Golden Boot winner was the only one of Liverpool’s front three who looked remotely threatening, demonstrating that innate ability to create space for himself around the opposition box, but his end product was once again lacking.

Salah had three of Liverpool’s five efforts inside the City area, but where those shots were flying in last season, Ederson (£5.7m) was barely troubled in the away goal.

One attempt was particularly familiar: Salah wriggling himself into space on the edge of the area and curling a left-footed shot towards goal, but as has so often been the case this season, the Egyptian’s effort went straight into the arms of the visiting goalkeeper.

Salah also shanked an effort wide after a beautiful pull-down from a long Robertson pass.

Fantasy managers’ opinions on Salah aren’t likely to be too influenced by a blank against City, but the real acid test for his remaining owners comes over the next four Gameweeks. Liverpool face Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City and Fulham before the November international break and should he flatter to deceive against this favourable opposition, then that might be the final straw for those retaining his services.

At least Salah was conspicuous: Firmino and Mane didn’t manage a single shot on goal or key pass all match.

For the second time in five days, Liverpool’s gameplan was hampered by an early injury to a central midfielder. James Milner (£5.7m) was withdrawn with a hamstring complaint on 28 minutes, with Naby Keita (£7.2m) – who was himself substituted in the defeat to Napoli last Wednesday – coming on in his place.

Klopp said of Milner’s problem:

How much [serious]? It’s too early, I don’t know. I asked him ‘big one?’ and he said ‘I don’t think so, but big enough that I go off.’

That Milner now has a fortnight to recover from his hamstring issue will perhaps render this debate moot, but should it prove to be a medium-term injury, then penalty-taking duties are once again up for grabs. Salah, Firmino and Mane have all taken – and missed – spot-kicks for the Reds in the past, but those three upcoming fixtures against the leakiest defences in the league (all of whom have conceded at least two penalties already this season) could very well lead to a spot-kick opportunity or two for whomever takes them.

Liverpool’s clean sheet would have been to the chagrin of Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£5.2m) owners. The England defender was dropped to the bench for this match, with Joe Gomez (£5.1m) moving over to right-back and Dejan Lovren (£4.9m) coming into central defence.

Lovren was one of the game’s stand-out players and recorded maximum bonus for his efforts, so it will be interesting to see how his display will impact on both Gomez and Alexander-Arnold’s pitch time in the coming weeks.

Klopp praised his side’s defensive display after the match, with Mahrez’s missed penalty the only “big chance” Liverpool allowed their opponents:

You cannot defend them 100 per cent over 95 minutes, so they will always have their moments but I thought how we defended was brilliant apart from the penalty and one or two situations where we needed Alisson with a really good save.

Against City, it’s not news – if you don’t defend the half-spaces then they are constantly between your midfield and last line and you have to constantly jump in the last line, which you don’t want to do really. One situation where you allow them a one-two and then are alone in front of the goalie, or are alone in the box and shoot the ball across the line and somebody scores an easy goal at the back post. It’s so difficult to defend and I am really happy with how we did it.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Gomez, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Wijnaldum, Milner (Keita 29′); Mane, Salah, Firmino (Sturridge 72′)

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy; Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho; Sterling (Sane 75), David Silva, Mahrez; Aguero (Gabriel Jesus 65′)

Was planning to do Zaha > Mitrovic, but with lots of people transferring him out it is making me reconsider.
Is there something I'm missing, 2 blanks in a row yes, but he has 3 easy fixtures.

Yeah I watched as well and he didn't look great.

Any forward regardless of their form can score against huddersfield and cardiff though.

yea really border line at the moment for me.

when fulham play well hes great to have, the problem is that when fulham play badly he will get 1-2 pts....maybe have good bench cover to alternate with?

also bloody greedy schurrle kept shooting when he couldve passed to Mitro.

My first reaction was to get rid after 2 blanks.

The Cardiff game looks appealing but caution is needed. Cardiff limited Spurs and Fulham genuinely look bereft of confidence right now.

On paper both sides should score and this is a game Fulham should fancy getting a few goals in. But right now, I wouldn't bet on it and wonder if Wilson might be a better option for his next 2 games?

The fact that it's Cardiff up next, though, and I really need to get shot of Zaha with one of my 2 FTs over the break probably gives Mitrovic a stay of execution for now.

Should we consider going without a premium striker this season?

Aguero is pick of the bunch IMO, and the template looks to be one big hitter up front with two under 7.0, or at least it was.

Aguero has returned consistent if unspectacular points this season, aside from the 20-point haul against Huddersfield. His home form is excellent but he doesn't perform as well away. He's also completed 90 mins just twice in the eight games so far.

Callum Wilson for example has scored just 3 less points than Aguero and is 5.0 cheaper. Surely those funds can go along way, allowing for three big hitters in midfield like Hazard and Salah along with KDB/Sterling/Mane for example.

I'm on wildcard at the moment and a front three made up of Arnie/Mitro/Murray/Wilson/King/Jimenez looks like it could prove great value, with Arnie and Murray in particular enjoying a favourable run of fixtures all the way to January. Five of the top 10 scoring strikers started at 7.0 or less this season.

The Arsenal duo is also worth monitoring and I think Lacazette (9.6) is already proving exceptional value in that mid-price range, ahead of the more expensive Aguero, Kane, Lukaku and Aubameyang.

Any thoughts? Or is team structure too important to go with the three budget forwards?

For me it is the fixtures. Aguero/Kane can be rotated through the fixtures where they became great captaincy options. The week that Kun hauled 20 points, if you owned him and didn't captain him then you were ok. If you didn't own him your rank would plummet.

Depends on how you see FPL.

Most of us live week-to-week and chase points or look to the next GW only. If you want to broaden your view to the whole season then why not?

If you think Wilson will score more than Kane or Kun over the whole campaign, just go for it and worry in GW38 instead of every week.

If it goes wrong your team balance won't be great.

Like Demel has already said, the risk is in getting your OR to shreds should Kun fire and get a few monster scores.

Nothing wrong with what you propose doing. I'd just get Kun with cheaper fowards

I think Mark was ahead of the curve on this with his initial team. Thing is Aguero will get huge hauls now and again, will the points you'd gain elsewhere be enough to compensate for these and could you hold your nerve and stick to your structure when it happens?

The major difference this year is that Mendy, Robbo and Alonso could sit in our teams for 38 games. With such little tending required to the defence this frees up transfers to play hokey cokey with the front 8. Hazard is undoubtedly a set and forget captain option, as Salah was last season. I think given these conditions remain the same and with the number of striking options available, it's entirely possible that Kane, Aubameyang, Aguero and Lukaku will be non-essential to a very successful season

Agreed. I think ARM set and forget with R Bennett and AWB warming the bench is a no brainer. Most will have a 4.5 GK, Hazard and non-playing 4.5 mid, then the rest is about jumping on interchangeable in-form players at the right time.

Was thinking about this yesterday and whether getting Lacazette and Sterling actually works out better.

Only thing with Arsenal is that since GW3 they've played pretty crappy teams defensively and there are now some tough games coming up in their next 7 fixtures.

Codswallop! Unless you know who's going to win, and copy that person's team week-in, week-out, your chances of winning aren't that much different from those who were in the top 10k in GW2. The worst thing you can do now is play the ownership game. Maybe just focus on who's gonna get points, and then zoom past all the twitter handlers in the final thrd of the season, if not before 😀

In the 16/17 season I went from 1.25M to 200k from in GW33-37. Would have been much better too to I didn't take out all my best players for hits for GW38 in a desperate move to catch ML leader.

      See how they run.

Aguero isn't VFM for that price. Value seems to be in the midfield, especially with KdB returning (though KdB might help improve Aguero's numbers).

I've had Lacazette from the start and can't justify dropping him but I would certainly pair him with Murray / Mitrovic / Arnie and spend big in midfield.

There's no template. Too many good options. If you're trying to follow a template with your FTs, you're probably not doing what's best for your own team nor getting the players in who are likely to score the most score points in the future. Keyword: future.

3 budget/mid-priced forwards is certainly an option. There's no reason why it wouldn't be, besides an argument about structure and flexibility, which in my opinion is not important. If 3 budget forwards looks the best way to go with your team, and your expectations about the players you can now afford in other positions, then go for it, and don't let anyone tell you it can't work 🙂

I started with 3 cheap forwards with a power defence and midfield, but with the defence starting slowly I reneged. Now I'm reverting to my original template with Arnie, Mitro and Jimenez up top.

Good that you're not put off smply because it didn't pay off massively the first time. It's a fluid game, and right now it's like pure FPL! You get to choose your favourite players from a huge list of candidates, with only Hazard a no-brainer for me, and even he isn't essential. Loving it 😀

totally agree with you but people who do well tend to have a structure its wether your structure has the flexibility to transfer in the players that are going to do well in the future without take more than an 8 point hit.

Agree with this because from time to time you have to get one of the premium forwards when it is an obvious Captain pick (Laca last week 😉 ) ... but with 3 mid priced forwards it is hard to shuffle the pack and do this.

Now reverted to one premium forward up top with Mitro & Ings and will buy/sell/replace any of those three as necessary to King, Arnie, Zaha and Kun, Kane, Lukaku, Vardy etc

Just sell an expensive midfielder to upgrade a forward to Aguero. Usually these things can be done in 2 moves because we've all got the same budget (nearly), so the money is waiting to be realeased somewhere in your team. If you don't want to sell an expensive midfielder, it's probably because you think they'll do well, anyway.

thats an example of your team structure not allowing you to make the moves you want because certain players in your team have a greater probability to do well in the short term.
id rather waste 1 transfer than have to wait a week to make 2 and by that time price rises may prevent you from the transfers and taking lots of hits is very rarely worth it

Right, but the reason people are considering 3 budget forwards is because they believe the money is better spent elsewhere. That call could gain them a ton of points. If they get it wrong, then that's the game. I wouldn't advocate getting 3 budget forwards if you think it's likely you'll need Aguero back in 2 GWs or 2 premiums within the next 5 or 6 GWs. You have to think ahead and make the call. But still, "needing" Aguero back still needs to be offset against the chances of your other players doing well, and the possibility you'll want other emerging (premium) options in midfield and defence.

People who had a premium, Aguero, still had to spend 2FTs or take a hit to get Kane last week (for the most part). Flexibility is often very restrictive in that you chose a suboptimal combination of players for long-term easy switches, but those switches aren't guaranteed to be easy anyway. You can always be 0.1 short of an emerging option.

not necessarily - I'm going three cheapies up front because on current recent form I think they'll outscore the premiums. Could be wrong but then so could other choices. We go with our gut feelings - well, I do anyway...

FPL rule #11 ... # you will only be in a position to roll a transfer when you don’t need to, at all other times when you will desperately need two transfers to get a premium player, your team will go to pot and Mikhi / Lingard / Richarlison City mid (insert any player) will get rotated, injured or suspensed .... meaning your planned transfers are shot to bits #

Vardy Arnie and one other for me.

Choice comes down to Aguero and a 7 million mid or Sterling and one of Murray or Mitro.

it's an option, plenty of value up front and in defence - Rich and probably Maddison the standouts for the midfielders. I like the idea of Laca/Vardy, Arnie, Mitro but it's just getting the Aguero OUT timing right...kinda wish I'd done it this week, but he's got another great fixture coming so happy to hold.

The problem I have with removing Aguero is that he will be heavily captained some weeks, if he hauls and you don't even own him you're getting a pretty big rank drop if your replacement fails (as Hazard non-owners found out this week).

Hazard is looking the real deal though. Shades of Salah last year where the set and forgets comfortably outscored those playing captain switcheroo trying to nail Kane's big hauls

maybe yeah, but for me covering highly owned captains is important. If Hazard blanks against United and Salah and Aguero score you're kinda screwed, I personally don't think it's worth the risk right now, especially when I already have all 3.

If Hazard hauls vs. Utd (which is possible) then that probably changes. If it looks like -most- people will captain Haz in GW11 instead of Kun, then I'll downgrade him to Vardy probably - easy as that. I don't mind not owning such a player, but when captained by so many it seems unnecessarily risky (although I took that risk with Kane this week - but that was because that transfer was too short-term imo).

I had to cover ownership also this week and it sucked. I looked into a bunch of spurs games after midweek cup matches and found they performed poorly at scoring. Unfortunately I just couldn't take the risk because my rank is good so I bottled it and went with Kane along with the majority. In coming weeks Hazard may emerge as that player and if he does then I guess we will see some heavy investment replacing players like Maddison and Fraser etc with big hitting MFs. Premium fowards look potentially busted this year

yeah, feels bad when you play it 'safe' and it doesn't pay off, but the opposite is much worse imo. I didn't do Aguero -> Laca (for what I thought was at least a guaranteed goal) because of ownership this coming week, annoying but I felt it was neccessary.

I think you could be right about Hazard tbh, it's not something I've really considered but he could be perma-cap material. I thought Aguero 'had' to be my captain in GW11 but you may have persuaded me to think differently. I will definitely hold my transfer this week and then strongly consider that Aguero -> Vardy move just before his great fixtures.

      Two of Alonso, Robertson, Mendy in defence (with Doherty as 3rd playing one);
      Hazard, plus two of Salah, Mané, Sterling, KDB, Alli;
Frontline of any 3 of Vardy, Arnoutavic, Mitrovic, King, Wilson, Jimenez, Murray.

I am thinking of going Laca with two cheaper forwards. Right now, price just doesn't seem to be a barrier to having a very good squad. As the season goes along, I can see the bigger headache being who to to bench.

I’ve got Aguero with Vardy & Mitrovic. Seriously considering Kun’s place in my squad for exactly this reason - the £2m or so I get to swap him for Laca could be hugely helpful...

Have got lacazette in for aguero on wildcard wih 2 cheapies as fed up with his 60 mins per game. Can see me captaining Salah or hazard over the next 3/4 weeks so won't need him.
This allows me to have robbo Alonso Mendy and trippier at the back also.

Having not big hitter up top doesn’t keep your team very flexible.

As much as other strikers (currently) have out performed the big hitters, I don’t expect that to be the case also season.

Also with great value/cheap players in defence and midfield, where are you actually going to spend the funds saved?

I think team structure is important and Aguero fills that 11m forward bracket perfectly. He’s a no brainer captain when playing at home against non Top 6 sides.

I think 2 striker spots for 7m or under looks good. Banking on 3 doing well all the time might be too much to expect from them.

Seen my OR plummet since a strong start in the first 4 Gws. Feel I need to WC to stop the rot but is it too knee jerk? The culprits:

    Patricio, £4m
    Robertson, Shaw, Doherty, AWB, £3.9m
Mané, Haz, D. Silva, Neves, £4.3m
    Kane, Kun, Mitro

WC would probably be Shaw, AWB, Silva, Neves, Kane > Tripper/Mendy, Laporte, Maddison, Rich, Laca.

Or step away and do somehthing simple?

Say what you will about Huddersfield, Cardiff and Newcastle but all 3 have some very tasty upcoming fixtures. If you're wildcarding or looking for a differential gotta cast a glance at em.
Löwe, Schindler, Mooy, Jo. Murphy, Camarasa, Bennett, Fernandez, Kenedy and Perez my top 3s. (injuries pending)

Would only touch a Newcastle defender/keeper from that lot.

I think you're basing too much on what's happened so far this season. FPL is about what is *going* to happen. Camarasa potential set piece domination with Ralls out intrigues me. He is pretty much their sole technical player. Löwe defender on set pieces. Rule them out at your peril imo

I can't wait for the flurry of red arrows due to Lowe assists and Camarasa goals

OK peril was a bit much but like it not they are potentially very good differentials. Your scoffing at the idea is symbolic of the attitude fpl players have which sees them ignore nuggets like these imo.

Nah I get your point, I personally won't be transferring them in as it is quite a risky play.

Hmmm, I don't think so personally. Is he worth a million more than kenedy? One of the most sub-able assets in the game. Nothing yet this season. Might well be the time now, you could be right.

Very foolish IMO. He could easily be eased in and play reduced minutes for the first few games he’s back. I’m not even considering until he’s back up to speed and showing form.

Have a few options, still undecided, like any of these?

    1) Pereyra (don't ask)>>Maddison/Fraser
    2) Mitro + Trippier>>Laca + Doherty (5.3m def) -4pts
    3) S.Cook>>Doherty
    4) Nada, save FT

    Pat/ Foster
    Alonso / Robbo/ Tripper/ AWB / Cook
    Mane/ Hazard / Pereyra / Stephens/ Rich
    Aguero/ King/ Mitro

    Salah & Zaha --> Hazard & Firmino?

    DDG
    Alonso Chilwell Holebas Tomkins WB
    Salah Mane Fraser Richarlison Masuaku
    Aguero Arnie Zaha

    2ft, 1.0itb.

Also need to shift DDG, Tomkins but these could take priority...?

DDG to someone and bring in Hazard for one of salah/mane.

Looking for some gut reactions, would you WC??

    Foster - Fab
    WB - TAA - Tripp - Cook - Lowton
    Moura - Richarlison - Hazard - Ramsey - Hughes
    Augero - Kane - King

I mean, you don't really need to.
You probably want to change your defenders for a fixture swing, and also probably want a Liverpool attacker.

It is quite difficult to follow-up a haul (12pts or more) in one GW with another the week after. Looking at the players in the game today, the only ones I can see doing it regularly are Aguero, Kane, Salah and Hazard.

    Aguero Wilson Jimmy
    0.2

16K overall, 2FT's... So need to make a trade. Trippier close to going up, which with 0.0ITB will allow me to straight swap for Mendy, worth it?
