Richarlison eases FPL injury worries with cameo for Brazil

Our international break coverage continues with this round-up of the matches contested on Friday evening that involved Premier League players.

We summarise the minutes played, goals, assists and injury news concerning Fantasy Premier League assets, with further reviews to come over the weekend and early next week.

Brazil 1-0 Uruguay

  • Alisson (£5.7m) – 90 minutes
  • Danilo (£5.1m) – 90 minutes
  • Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) – 90 minutes
  • Richarlison (£6.9m) – 23 minutes
  • Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m) – 0 minutes
  • Willian (£7.4m) – 0 minutes
  • Fabinho (£5.5m) – 0 minutes
  • Ederson (£5.8m) – 0 minutes
  • Lucas Torreira (£4.9m) – 90 minutes

Richarlison shook off the groin injury he picked up in Everton’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea in Gameweek 12 and returned to action on Friday night, as Brazil edged past Uruguay at the Emirates.

One in four Fantasy Premier League managers own the Everton midfielder and his recovery is a rare piece of good news amid the deluge of knocks, niggles, withdrawals and yellow flags that have plagued our Gameweek 13 preparations.

Richarlison came off the bench with a quarter of the match remaining and indeed should have scored when picked out by Neymar on the six-yard box, but looked lively on the right flank and untroubled by any injury problem he had been affected by at Stamford Bridge.

Alisson and Danilo were part of the Brazil back four that kept out Luis Suarez and co, with the Liverpool goalkeeper called into action on four occasions in order to preserve Selecao’s clean sheet.

Roberto Firmino played the whole 90 minutes for his national team, predominantly used as the spearhead of a three-man attack and registering more penalty box touches than anyone on show – a far cry from the deeper or wider roles he has been asked to occupy at Liverpool in recent weeks.

That being said, Firmino didn’t really trouble the Uruguayan backline enough, and it was Neymar who was both Brazil’s biggest goal threat and creative spark.

Lucas Torreira played the whole match on his home ground, while Gabriel Jesus, Willian, Ederson and Fabinho all remained unused substitutes for Brazil.

Egypt 3-2 Tunisia

  • Mohamed Elneny (£4.3m) – 90 minutes
  • Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) – 90 minutes

Mohamed Salah scored his tenth goal in eight matches for Egypt by netting the winner in a five-goal thriller in Alexandria.

Salah had already hit the post for his country before grabbing the Pharaohs’ decisive third goal with minutes remaining, playing a one-two with team-mate Salah Mohsen before dinking the ball over visiting goalkeeper Farouk Ben Mustapha.

This was Salah’s only fixture of the international break and the Liverpool midfielder will now return to his club in good time for the trip to Watford a week today.

This was something of a dead rubber between the two sides as both Tunisia and Egypt have already qualified for the 2019 African Cup of Nations, which will take place next summer rather than in January/February as has been the case in previous years.

Mohamed Elneny returned from injury to start the game, having been unavailable for Arsenal for the last few weeks.

The defensive midfielder is yet to play one minute in the Premier League this season.

Wales 1-2 Denmark

  • Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Ethan Ampadu (£4.4m) – 40 minutes
  • Paul Dummett (£4.4m) – 39 minutes
  • David Brooks (£5.1m) – 90 minutes
  • Aaron Ramsey (£7.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Sam Vokes (£5.3m) – 0 minutes
  • Danny Ward (£4.4m) – 0 minutes
  • Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Zanka (£4.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Christian Eriksen (£9.2m) – 90 minutes
  • Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m) – 0 minutes
  • Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.5m) – 0 minutes

David Brooks put in an eye-catching performance at the Cardiff City Stadium as Wales’ UEFA Nations League campaign ended at the hands of Denmark on Friday.

The Bournemouth midfielder was, in many eyes, Wales’ best player on the night, putting in an excellent attacking display on the right flank and registering more key passes (four) than anyone on show in Cardiff.

Brooks should have at least had one assist when his cross was nodded wide by James Chester from six yards out, while the former Sheffield United winger almost got on the scoresheet himself when curling an effort wide from outside the Danish box.

Aaron Ramsey didn’t have quite the same impact in a two-man midfield, while Wayne Hennessey was perhaps slow to react for both of Denmark’s goals – as good as they were.

Newcastle United fans would have been concerned to see Paul Dummett limp from the field of play after just 39 minutes, meanwhile – the Wales left-back has kept four clean sheets in ten appearances for the Magpies this season, though is only owned by 0.2% of FPL bosses.

Further news is awaited on the severity of Dummett’s injury.

Kasper Schmeichel impressed in the Denmark goal in repelling Gareth Bale and co, while Zanka – suspended for Gameweek 13 after picking up five yellow cards for Huddersfield – and Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen also clocked up 90 minutes at centre-back.

Christian Eriksen‘s long road to recovery from an abdomen problem continued with a 90-minute run-out in South Wales, with the Spurs midfielder going close early on with a shot that flashed wide and then creating two chances for his team-mates.

Eriksen was mainly deployed as a “number ten” in the Danish side, though roamed across the attacking midfield positions and showed glimpses of his old creative self in the first half especially – though the premium midfielder has plenty to do in the coming fortnight (regular starts, for one) if he is to convince Fantasy managers that he is a viable option when Spurs’ fixtures turn for the better in Gameweek 15.

Sam Vokes, Danny Ward, Jannik Vestergaard and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all watched this game from the bench.

The Netherlands 2-0 France

  • Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.5m) – 89 minutes
  • Nathan Ake (£5.0m) – 6 minutes
  • Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Lucas Digne (£4.8m) – 90 minutes
  • N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) – 65 minutes
  • Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m) – 25 minutes
  • Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) – 0 minutes

A France side missing the injured Paul Pogba (£8.0m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.7m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) slumped to a 2-0 UEFA Nations League defeat in Rotterdam, having needed only a draw to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.

Les Bleus were actually indebted to Hugo Lloris to keep the scoreline respectable, with the Dutch much the better side and deserving to win by a greater margin.

Lloris made nine stops in all from Memphis Depay, Ryan Babel, Denzel Dumfries, Frenkie de Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum, but could do nothing to stop the Liverpool midfielder giving the Netherlands the lead just before half-time when he followed up a parried shot from Babel.

Virgil van Dijk was in imperious form at centre-back and snuffed out pretty much everything except for one Antoine Griezmann chance in the second half, with Olivier Giroud indeed hauled off on 65 minutes having not had a single shot on goal.

Lucas Digne and N’Golo Kante both picked up cautions as the French struggled to deal with a vibrant Dutch attack, but the Everton left-back did showcase his attacking threat by bombing forward to create a chance or two.

Nathan Ake and Moussa Sissoko both came off the bench for their respective countries, while Mamadou Sakho was an unused substitute.

Argentina 2-0 Mexico

  • Juan Foyth (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Raul Jimenez (£5.8m) – 90 minutes
  • Erik Lamela (£6.5m) – 1 minute
  • Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.5m) – 0 minutes
  • Sergio Romero (£5.0m) – 0 minutes
  • Roberto Pereyra (£6.4m) – 0 minutes

Juan Foyth shrugged off a facial injury to play the whole 90 minutes for Argentina in the early hours of Saturday, earning the man of the match award on his international debut.

Foyth lined up as part of a back three in Lionel Scaloni’s 3-4-2-1 and was up against Wolves’ Raul Jimenez in the Mexican attack, with Argentina restricting their visitors to just three attempts on goal in the entire game.

Jimenez had the best of those opportunities when nodding a Marco Fabian cross against the bar after just two minutes, but was unable to trouble the hosts’ goal thereafter as a Lionel Messi-less Argentina ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.

Erik Lamela – who had himself picked up a head injury in Gameweek 12 – came on as a substitute in the dying stages of the match, though Paulo Gazzaniga, Sergio Romero and Roberto Pereyra remained unused on the home bench.

Chile 2-3 Costa Rica

  • Alexis Sanchez (£10.0m) – 90 minutes

Alexis Sanchez had a somewhat mixed evening as Chile fell to a humbling home defeat to Costa Rica, who raced into a three-goal lead before the hosts recovered to add a gloss of respectability to the scoreline.

Sanchez scored Chile’s second goal of the night, controlling a long ball from Erick Pulgar on his chest and firing past visiting goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado to set up a grandstand finish.

The Manchester United midfielder had, not for the first time in his career, earlier missed from the spot after himself being fouled in the Costa Rican box.

Playing on the left of the front three, Sanchez posted the kind of underlying attacking statistics that had marked him out as a desirable premium Fantasy asset at Arsenal: ten penalty box touches, eight attempts on goal and three big chances.

Sanchez also created more chances than anyone on show in Rancagua.

Round-up

Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.2m) and Stefan Johansen (£5.1m) started on the flanks for Norway as they deservedly came back from a goal down to draw 1-1 in Slovenia.

Johansen was withdrawn just before the hour mark, as has become a regular occurrence in recent internationals, while Crystal Palace’s Alexander Sorloth (£4.8m) came off the bench in the final quarter of an hour as Norway chased the game.

Elyounoussi lasted the full 90 minutes.

Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) was on the winning side as Slovakia trounced Ukraine 4-1, with Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.8m) lining up in midfield as usual for his national team.

The game wasn’t quite as one-sided as the scoreline suggested, with Dubravka keeping up his fine recent form for Newcastle by making five stops – one from Zinchenko – as his country scored from all four of their shots on target at the other end.

Gaetan Bong (£4.5m) and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (£4.4m) both started for Cameroon in their 2-0 defeat to Morocco, who named Wolves’ Romain Saiss (£4.2m) on the bench.

Diogo Jota tapped in Portugal under-21’s winner against their Polish counterparts on Friday, while his Wolves’ team-mate Ruben Vinagre and the Portuguese under-20s had two games in as many days on Thursday and Friday – the wing-back posting a video of himself in action against Poland in the first of those two matches.

Hi everyone, hope you’re enjoying your time in the international break. Having done a piece on Laporte a couple of days ago, I thought I’d roll the scanner over another option which FPL managers have been considering this week – Anthony Martial.

On the face of it, a Man United attacking midfielder in prime form at an affordable price with amazing fixtures should be a no brainer, right? Not to mention that he’ll be a cash cow with price rises coming his way as historically Man United players tend to rise very fast (because of their massive fanbase). So, when you see a vast amount of Twitter FPL accounts and fantasy football websites persuasively advertising him on their pages, the fear of missing out seems unavoidable. All of a sudden, “Tony Martial, he came from France” starts reverberating in your ears – more so for me as a United fan. The hype becomes real. He’s like the shiny little toy every kid wants to own. But decisions, as hard it may be, should be based on cold facts rather than emotions. I must admit that at first glance I was caught in the frenzy too, until I looked into the data and came across these surprising findings:

    - For assist potential, Martial’s numbers are nothing to write home about. His minutes per chance created at the moment is worse than the likes of Shelvey, Snodgrass and Moutinho, for example.

    - For goal threat, Martial’s minute per chance (43) is worse than the likes of significantly cheaper alternatives like Paterson, Brooks, Lamela, Schurrle, Murphy, Deulefeu and even Kenedy.

    - Martial’s had just 3 big chances, including the fortunate penalty he scored from last week when Pogba was not on the field. Nathan Ake, Ryan Sessegnon and Steve Mounie have had more.

    - If I extrapolate the data and assume that the trends in his data would continue over a greater number of minutes, his shots in the box would still be lesser than the likes of Pereyra, Walcott and Bernardo Silva. I don’t see any of them names being as seriously considered – so why is Martial?

    - That brings me to the main point. If Martial has not been getting the quality of chances, how is he scoring so many points? The secret lies in his goal conversion. At the moment, his goal conversion rate lies at a staggering 44%. You’d argue that a high goal conversion for a quality player like him would go hand in hand. But to put this into context, Martial having recorded a goal conversion rate of 19% (2015/16), 9% (2016/17) and 18% (2017/18) in his three seasons respectively, has not even crossed a conversion rate of 20% in any of the seasons he has played. The likes of Hazard (23%), Sterling (22%) or predatory strikers like Kane (15%) and Aguero (14%) are some way off Martial’s goal conversion rate (44%) this season. The common perception has been that Aubameyang has been overperforming this season, but even he has a relatively miserly conversation rate (30%) when compared to Martial’s (44%). Luis Suarez in the infamous 2013/14 season had a conversion rate of 17% to put this into perspective.

    - Hence it comes across as no surprise that Martial is top of the pile (of all players in the entire league) for overperformance when actual output is compared to expected output. Martial’s expected goals are 2.41, his actual goals are 6 – the gap of +3.59 being the biggest in the league for variance.

What this tells me about Martial is that he is scoring at a rate which is unsustainable in the long term. While I can see why he is a compelling option ahead of the fixtures he has coming up, I’d urge caution with him for the time being as I expect his scoring rate to regress to the mean at some point. Famous last words, but in terms of FPL, is Martial Lucas Moura v2.0? That is the big question and only time will tell. 🙂

        Cracking piece.

Could Lingard's return from injury affect Tony's minutes at all?

          Thank you.

I don't think so, as Mourinho prefers to use Lingard on the right or centrally.

Excellent and timely analysis, and suggests he may not be viable as a long term pick.

But i do think there is something, however mysterious, to be said about the fact that attacking players do tend to have brief purple patches in which their conversion rates are significantly above average, and that this is not purely a chance phenomenon, but something to do with confidence and general mentality. I know a lot of statisticians have thought about the `hot hand phenomenon' in basketball, which is a similar principle, and that there is a serious school of thought according to which the length and nature of these runs can be reliably predicted. If one buys into that, then there might be an argument for going for him as a short term pick (especially given fixtures), but this is highly speculative aaaand i'm rambling

Thanks for the appreciation. Confidence plays a part yes, but whether it should to such a massive extent I'm not so sure. I fear the boat to get him might have sailed. Having said that, I fully expect this to blow up in my face when Martial scores a hat trick against Palace next. 😀

ha, right. and i think you're right that it's easy to overstate the confidence factor. I just looked it up, and apparently studies show that (all else being equal) a basketball player that has scored their last 4 shots is about 2% more likely to make their next shot than a player that made only 2 of their last 4 shots. So at least in basketball, the hot hand phenomenon (if it exists at all) has a pretty modest effect, and there's no obvious reason it'd be that different in football.

If you break that study down further, you'd see that those events could have been in two different halves. I don't think we should call it a hot hand when there is so long a break in between.
If anything, the evidence in these studies have found that a player who has been over-performing starts becoming "too" confident and taking bad shots which
            automatically reduces his effectiveness.

Having such significantly lower game time still blows most of this post apart. Especially when looking at the fixtures that were missed vs fixtures started.

The sample size over three seasons is significant enough imo. That's just the way Mourinho sets up. I have no reason to believe why his numbers over the coming fixtures will be much different. 🙂

Great post. United fan as well and also finding myself getting caught up in the hype. The fixtures are what looks appealing for me. Seems to be Uniteds main(only?) threat right now and even for a side so desperately poor, Palace at home and Soton away should at least yield a goal per game and theres a good chance on current form, he will be involved

So apparently the international break is actually doing good to someone! Another great write up!
My analysis on Martial is the same as every other José Mourinho attacking player; I just can't have any of them. My eye test will always be my first choice of decision making there and until Mourinho decide to change his style of offensive play I will stay far away from them.

For better or worse, I follow the fixtures too. Martial has far better fixtures coming up. He's scored 3 of his 6 goals vs che and mcy. That is an easy factor as to why his xG and shots are low. Against weaker defenses, he'll have a lot higher offense stats.

Also, his curtailed minutes at the start of the season also skew his stats quite a bit. When he plays, and plays well, he's easily worth 9.5m in terms of potential.

Martial is a quality player, thats easy to see by just looking at him. He can go pass 2-3 men, whatever defence it is too. And if im not mistaken he is United top goal scorer in the club now, and his stats from when he played under LVG too for instance is pretty good. He he still only 22 years old? And he will only improve if he keeps starting. I am getting him. He has the potential to be the best player in the league. Fantastic to watch him.

"Martial is a quality player, thats easy to see by just looking at him. He can go pass 2-3 men"

This is exactly the kind of "hype" I am referring to. I'd rather want my FPL player to be average at best, but getting into good goal scoring positions to convert his chances - even if his conversion rate is below average. Callum Wilson being the case in point.

Martial has proven himself many times as long as he gets gametime. I have no doubt about him, only doubt is Mou and his tactics. Ofc his current output wont last. Even Messi or Ronaldo would put up those kind of numbers throughout a whole PL season.

They've been playing really well together. If Pogba isn't playing it will hurt Martial, and vice versa.

            Interesting post.

He's joint 2nd for Shots In The Box for midfielders over the last 4 gameweeks, though. And that's with Utd having played City, Bournemouth away, and Chelsea away I think.

I'm half-considering him and can see why others are too.

If you look at his shot heat map, you'd find that he's taking shots from tough goal scoring positions. These are the chances that he is converting though, and that is why I'm saying at some point sooner or later he'd regress to the mean because the quality of chances isn't quite there.

Awesome original post, and top research, but I think Balfy has come up with the key stat regarding his goal threat. He's clearly not a shoot on sight midfielder like Schurrle or Kenedy, which masks the minutes per chance stats, while United's performances have generally picked up a bit over the past month or so.

Yes, there will be some regression in terms of output, but the fixtures are there and the value is there, so he looks an investable option.

Definitely an investable option yes, but I think some people need to manage expectations. I've even seen him being talked up as a captain option! Far too early for that, he isn't going to score worldies every game - it's far too early to be considering him to be reliable is basically the gist of the post.

I think captaincy is only being mooted because of it being the first GW where we haven't had the Aguero/Salah home rotation. Even seen Jimenez mentioned, so you can throw anyone in with a favourable fixture. Just one of those weeks where the more 'maverick' managers have less to lose on paper by taking a risk. Martial (c) wouldn't be for me.

I use the eye test in conjunction with stats, and know when he's confident and enjoying a run in the side, he has the ability to be a clinical finisher. IMO shots from inside the box from tricky angles aren't out of the ordinary for him to score from.

Fair point on the reliability - but that's also just United in general. The next 'crisis' is never too far away. But you would think the fixtures mean they and he should be okay for a while.

Great article. I have fallen foul of the bandwagon many times and was a bit more cautious on this one. Think now may be too late as his streak may be coming to an end but the fixtures do look tempting.

Another excellent informative post! I agree - now that my United fan hype is settled, I’ve gone cold on Martial. He is on ridiculous form as you can tell in the eye test, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he continues this for a while longer - but we’re here to play the odds. 🙂

Cheers chief. I like the in depth stats analysis but I think looking at players like Martial I think you need a different case.

Yes, the 'opportunity' stats are bad but they will likely increase with the upturn in fixtures as United are (hopefully) more attacking. His conversion rate will regress to a normal level but he will probably outscore his xG given his 'specialty' cut inside shot has a low xG(0.13 combined xG for three goals vs Newcastle, Chelsea & Everton), Salah did the same last season and there are plenty of other cases of players regularly scoring these low xG shots.
It's basically a matter of whether the likely volume increase will be able to 'cover' the downturn in conversion and I think it will.

We should also look at his history which suggests that when he plays he's one of the most productive players in the league and that has been regardless of role/shot volume/really bad negative manager/Alexis being in his way. This is his best situation and his confidence is at it's highest, he has a great dynamic with Pogba and Shaw down the left and is playing the best football of his career. He's £7.5m and is probably in the tier below Salah, Hazard & Sterling and that's a steal in my opinion.

Agreed. His returns will almost certainly regress, but every player essentially has their own xG. Cutting inside and shooting comes naturally to some players, and for them individually, it has a higher xG than it would for another player.

Lingard for example is very good at a certain type of finesse shot from outside the box, and is expected to score more of them than another player.

xG is a terrific stat for the average of all players but like every stat, it does need interpreting. Martial's returns will reduce, but I still think he'll be good value.

Yep, 'elite' players generally outscore xG as they can score from anywhere. When you have a high xG and are an elite player then why the hell aren't you scoring tons? I'm looking at you Salah & Kane.

Anyway, Martial's underlying stats are only going to get better, let's see what happens.

The elite Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t outscored his xG since the 2014/15 season. 😉

Nice counter post Parm. What I'm suggesting is that the "likely volume increase" you're speaking of is purely based on speculation - because in the "easier" games he has played over the years he hasn't exactly produced the kind of stats you are suggesting he would. This likely volume increase is exactly what I'm looking for though, and as soon as I'm convinced that Martial is getting enough chances a game I'll invest. Better be late than never. 🙂

This is where it would be ideal to filter in/out opponents in the FFS matrix to show United/Martial's stats against 'weaker' opposition. I guess we will see but I have a feeling United will be a little more productive now they have found a *mainly* winning formula with Martial.

Even though, I am probably dumping him instead of Richarlison before GW14 or 15 to Bilva or Dilva.
So most likely 1 or 2 more games of Martial in my team

Cheers for this fascinating and informative post.

I suspect Martial is scoring well in part due to the poor form of all 3 attackers (Sanchez, Rashford and Lukaku), hence monopolizing most of the goals and taking penalties.

However, I don't his purple patch and confidence ending yet until Lukaku or someone else starts showing form.

I’d be using Martial of a classic example of why stats can be deceiving. He doesn’t need to have a minutes per chance created higher than shelvey, or a minutes per chance higher than brooks, or more big chances than Nathan Aké.

He needs to have more points than them, and whilst those measures above can be correlated to future points potential in some cases, there’s no guarantees.

If you go back to 2 seasons ago Martial was 9.5m, as a 7.5m mid he is looking ridiculously underpriced, and could easily continue dipping in & out of games notching goals & assists without peppering the goal for 90 mins.

The OP post is definitely Super work - however I think whilst the spirit here is correct, the conclusion in not getting, or hesitating on getting Martial because of his retrospective chances created & big chances could be very dangerous indeed.

In saying that I haven’t got him yet so what do I know lol.

I don't do stats and so can't counter any of what's said and it's probably all right, but I couldn't shake the feeling reading this post that now all our money has been spent on Laporte and we can't afford Martial, let's look for reasons not to get him. I think a budget priced option returning points in a "big team" is what we usually crave for and so this isn't a punt like Maddison who plays for a team notorious for going missing randomly. Of course, it could all fail like Mkhi or Moura, but I think you'd rather own them and them fail than get them in when their returns have slowed and at an inflated price. The other thing working in his favor is that besides Richarlison and to a certain extent Siggy, there's basically not many in that price range you can swap for.

Mkhitaryan, Moura (as you mentioned) and even Pedro have been budget priced options in big teams that haven't quite worked out well. I can understand the lure but that doesn't mean the hype will translate into consistent points. They are easily affordable, so I don't see getting either of them with Laporte would be an issue? Not saying he's a bad pick, but for me personally I think he needs to put up some more numbers before I start considering him as a serious option. 🙂

Can't see the wood for the trees. The FFS obsession with stats knows no bounds nowadays.

I need to know one thing and one thing only to get Martial in for 7.5m. And that one thing is whether Mourinho will start him every week. I came to the conclusion 2 weeks ago that he very likely will. Decision made, end of story. Though I wish he had blanked against City, then fewer would be looking at him.

As it happens I am well aware that Martial's conversion rate is too high to sustain. But I don't need it to for 7.5m. Anything around 20% will be fine, thanks, and he is well capable of that. 🙂

He's definitely nailed, and should play the significant majority of games in December. That's besides what I'm questioning in my findings though. 🙂

I guess there's a reason for the "obsession" - I'd feel far more confident if the eye test was backed up with numbers. But then again I'm a proper stat nerd so I can understand if someone would complain about the overuse of statistics in my analysis.

Anyways good luck with him Ruth, hope he does well for you!

No, taking a hit to do Mané ➡ Martial seemed unwise when United were playing at City while Mané would have Fulham at Anfield. That's why I'd have preferred a Martial blank last weekend. But it's done now. 🙂

Martial has been under my microscope and I do have a plan to transfer in this GW. I first thought that the poor underlying stats you mentioned could be due to Utd's recent tough fixtures (VS che, (Juv if u count UCL), EVE, bou, juv (UCL again), city), but I found out that it was not.

Before these games, he faced Newcastle at home and he only had 1 shot in 90 min (so, 100% conversion rate). Actually, his numbers of shots have been increased even though the fixtures became tougher.

2 shots (Again 100% CR) vs che, 2 shots (0% CR) vs JUVE, 3 shots (33% CR) vs EVE, 4 shots (25% CR) vs bou, 3 shots (0% CR) vs juve, 3 shots (33% CR) vs city. So, total Conversion rate was less than 30 %.

So, his no of shots has been increased, which may show that Mou tried to rely more on him and or he has more confident or Utd improved as a team?

The downsize is ,,,WAS TOUGHER FIXTURE good for Utd team as a whole?? Utd players are not playing for their Manager IMO (Even if is not 100% true), but they will try to play for themselves or (team) when they are against big teams.

Will the team as a whole let Martial (and his owners of course) down when they play against small teams in coming GWs? I am concerned.

He isnt expensive and so can anytime be taken out once he stops performing. Like Barkley punt which dint work out but also dint give me rank fall as rest of team was template. Lamela is much better pick but injury prone and rotation risk is way lot for this hectic december

Martial has 10.8ppg in the last 5 games, including some tough opposition.

Yes he is outperforming his stats in terms of goals but his underlying stats will likely improve in the easier fixtures to come.

He ticks all the boxes; form, fixtures, nailed. And potentially on pens. For 7.5 what more could you ask for?

With Pogba expected back against Everton, Martial won't be on penalties:

                https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/paul-pogba-penalty-jose-mourinho-interview-press-conference-manchester-united-everton-pickford-a8605836.html

I personally feel that ppg is a very misleading stat, especially when it comes to predicting future outcomes. Moura had a ppg of over 7 in his first four games. Having a decent ppg has no co-relation with what is to come. 🙂

Martial is a better finisher and a notch higher in quality than Moura. Also with Maddison out not many mid priced alternatives suit me. Was keen on DSilva but dunno if nailed for hectic december. Would probably do Martial to Pogba in a game or 2 to profit from Martial sale amd more nailed alternative

The challenge, as many have pointed out, is that Maddy is injured, Fraser has terribly tough fixtures and I can't afford Mané....

Having risen to never before seen rankings off the back of sticking to the template despite every fibre in my body shouting "bandwagon!!" I'm now faced with a choice.... Sticking with the template despite the chances of getting 2 points or less per mid-priced MF or looking for a bargain in the short term while Maddy and Fraser become viable again?

I am thinking bandwagon as the safe alternative of rank protection is getting old......

I'm with you on the stats. When Martial's numbers show up dark red on my spreadsheet against all the options, it's very difficult to justify prioritising transfers for him. Furthermore, I just can't see him continuing his ridiculous average over the last 5 gameweeks. You rarely see players score like that continuously, it almost always regressed to mean.

That said, the fact he's playing on a forward line for United and is scoring the winning goals in all their games means he is the talisman for a team that is seriously underperforming and seeing a big fixture swing.

It's all about what you can do with your own team and I think that Sterling + Martial is better than Salah + 5.7m midfielder, which I might consider, but it seems like I missed the boat on that one.

If we were facing of a sample size of thousands of future games you could reasonably expect regressions. As it is, we have very short seasons (statistically) in FPL, and over another 20 games he could easily maintain or exceed his current points production, possibly even with a deterioration in some underlying stats, as the sample size we are measured over is just so statistically small. Stats are quite dangerous when it comes to FPL unfortunately.

I'm not sure if I misunderstood what you meant but in my eyes regression in FPL depends on the underlying reasons for good form. For most players with bad stats, form seems to last about 4-6 weeks. Is now the time to get Martial? We could have said the same thing about various other players this season (e.g. Mane, Richarlison, Hazard, Doherty) and for one reason or another the points dried up after a few weeks and they started blanking or got injured/suspended. However the players who demonstrate stronger stats (e.g. Hazard and Doherty) look more sustainable than those that don't and it helps to justify the price tags. Season keepers usually fall into this category. Some are cheap and/or pass the eye test such that you're willing to get them anyway (e.g. Richarlison for me). I haven't noticed enough in the eye test for Martial to place him in the latter category yet, except that he is clinical...Maybe I need to watch United play more often?

But do I agree that the stats can be misleading. That's why I don't think we should overlook the obvious: he's the key attacker in a big 6 side with good fixtures (as mentioned in my original comment).

If you're not captaining Salah, then the swap becomes even more tempting. I can understand where you're coming from!

I certainly wouldn't captain salah every week but the main reason I'd choose sterling is that he looks deadly this season and is cheaper. Him and hazard are probably the best players in the league right now and I'd happily captain either of them as well as Aguero.

I have been trying to decide between Richarlison and Martial for the whole week and when I compare them 1to1 for last 6 games, stats scream for Martial. Do the same with Bilva and Martial, the result is same. It is not only because of the crazy conversion rate. As a goal threat, his key stats like penalty area touches, shots both on and off target are better than his direct competitors. I really don't care about the single isolated stat being worse than some irrelevant players like Nathan Ake, Ryan Sessegnon and Steve Mounie.

However, I fully agree that his convention rate is unsustainable. Lets halve it and assume Martial scored 3 goals in last 6 games (4 of which are away games including City and Chelsea). I would still take that.

Having said that, I am still not convinced to get Martial over Richarlison but the reason is not stats beacuse they are pointing Martial in my interpretation. It is the form of ManU, tactics of Mourinho and return of Lukaku. I still don't believe ManU will perform consistently over those good fixtures and Martial may stop delivering anytime with the addition of Lukaku, Sanchez and Lingard or change in his position. If I am not mistaken, in his first season, he scored in 3 consecutive games and we were talking him being the next Henry. He can still be though but he is still a 'punt' for me with that inconsistency.

                Great analysis.

I prefer Richarlison ahead of Martial because:

                A) I think Everton are a more attacking side
                B) He's cheaper
                C) The short term fixtures are slightly better and
                D) Even though his underlying stats are not too different from Martial's this season, but over a larger sample size of games last season, we know the sort of numbers Richarlison can produce - Martial not at the same level quite yet.

i think i prefer 1, and am considering a similar move myself (below), but with doherty in place of TAA. I think it's pretty difficult to pick the best value defender around 5 mil right now, with Doherty, Digne, TAA, Keane, Gomez etc

oh yeah, i was forgetting about wolves having Hud at home. 2 makes sense then. I think the hit is justified since Jimenez and Martial's expected points for this week are probably close to 4 more than vardy and fraser's (you could check RMT for an estimate), and they look better value in the coming weeks as well

apologies for adding to the never ending tower of mendy questions, but:

mendy and maddison to doherty and martial for -4 sound like a good move? If I just do Mendy to Laporte, then i'll end up playing diangana or balbuena against city, which seems pretty sub optimal

            RMWCT

            Patricio / Lössl
            Robbo | Alonso | Doherty | Laporte | AWB
            Hazard | Sterling | Martial | Richarlison | Camarasa
            Kun | Arnie | Jiménez

.6 itb atm and there is tv tied in all players except Lössl and Camarasa.

Lössl needs to be considered, but kept cs vs Fulham and Cardiff and faces no top6 teams when Patricio does. Just .1 short to do AWB > Digne but need some cash to do Laporte > Trippier later. Naturally any injury might change that plan to perhaps downgrade elsewhere and do AWB > Trippier. Too template(ish)? Any ideas what to change?

Is it time to abandon Liverpool's defence ?

Looking at their results so far they have played 12 games, conceded 5 goals and have 7 clean sheets. So far a brilliant performance.
However, 6 of those clean sheets could be considered bankers
            Home to:
West Ham: First game of the season. West Ham started the season slowly scoring only 2 goals in their first 4 games
Brighton: BHA have a decent away record having scored 5 in 7. However those came at SOU, CAR, EVE and NEW
Southampton: Who have a blanked in 3 of their 6 away games. The other blanks being at BOU and WLV
Man City: Getting a clean sheet against City was by far their best defensive performance of the season
Fulham: who have six blanks in 12 games
            Away to:
Crystal Palace: a team that has failed to score in 5 of their 6 home games
Huddersfield: a team that didn't score in their first 4 home games.

So of those 7 clean sheets 6 of them were in games where a clean sheet was very likely.

In terms of the up coming fixtures, I looked at the FFS Ticker from GW15 onwards. (The likely time I will play my wildcard)
Looking at a 6 week window of fixtures from GW15 Liverpool have the 14th hardest schedule, from GW18 they also have the 14th hardest schedule.
Looking at a 10 week window, from GW15 they have the 12th hardest and from GW18 the 15th hardest.

So going forward, for a considerable length of time, the games appear to be toughening up. So how likely are we to see the level of performance we have banked on for the last 12 weeks.

An argument for Robertson is that his attacking returns compensate for his 6+m price, however, Robertson has just one assist in the last 8 games.

            Dropping Robertson, madness ?

For the last 12 games yes. The question of the post is whether those clean sheets are sustainable given the change in fixture difficulty. If the clean sheets are less likely then so are the BPS.

Liverpool were unlucky not to have an 8th clean sheet had it not been for Alisson trying to skill his way out of danger against Leicester. Even as it is, 7 clean sheets is a great return & there is no reason why Liverpool can't continue to keep doing that. I'm even tempted to double up on their defence.

I accept what you are saying. But unless it was an upgrade to Alonso how would you invest the money and what would the the difference in your expected points? Robertson should get around 155 - 165 points, that is more than other defenders other than Alonso or any midfielder in his price bracket (assuming you bought him for £6m.

Perhaps a switch to a Spurs defender. Their up coming schedule has them playing 8 home games in the next 12 (from GW15) and only one game ranked at 4 on the FDR.

If Davies were nailed I'd be very tempted. I can't see Trippier getting within 15 - 20 points of Robertson for roughly the same price, and I can't see their CS potential being better than Liverpool in the next 2 GWs. Davies would be a dream buy from GW 15 IF he retains his place.

I've got Robertson, Trippier, Alonso and TAA (which explains why I won't be challenging your lofty position any time soon). But I love this kind of debate rather than the endless RMT questions. Thanks for posting.

My point is they have kept clean sheets in 6 easy games.
Other than the City game their performance was expected.

Outside of the prem, where they have played better teams than those mentioned above their defense has conceded the following
                PSG 2, Chelsea, 2, Napoli 1, Red Star 0, Red Star 2.

As someone mentioned earlier, the lack of viable alternatives kind of defeats the argument. Good points raised though. However, one could have made a similar argument about Uniteds start last season and ddg ended up being the top gk and their defenders did well if you owned them at various points of the season. Robbo fairly nailed

With the top clubs having multiple choices for most positions, two or three cup competitions in the mix and Poch & Pep's rotation policies it might be better to have a Wolves or West Ham defender playing 100% of the time rather than hoping for a CS from a substitute?

Accept your point, but who would you get instead?

Liverpool don't have terrible fixtures, just okay-ish ones. I can't see any defense that's crying out for coverage. Maybe Spurs in two weeks, but we still have ample time until then to shift our priorities.

Maybe Trippier if his injury has cleared up by GW15. He's started all but the first game, which he may have missed due to returning late from the WC. He has better attacking returns than Robertson 4a 1g compared to 3a. He might be more prone to rotation but we haven't seen that happen yet.

Foyth could be a cheap entry point if he can keep in the team.

I’m seriously considering robbo>alonso around gw15 and also getting rid of Salah to free up funds. May bite me in the backside if i go through with it.

Well, check my team above and give us example. If I drop Robbo, whom should I transfer in? And if I downgrade him to get extra funds who else goes out and for whom?

I'll replace Mendy this week after the internationals have concluded.
Considering WC in GW15 which is when I'll be revamping the line-up. Hence the analysis this weekend, prep work.

Trippier's just about to go from my team, injury & rotation ahead now.
Aurier will play in the easier games if the past is anything to go by.

Possibly, safer options might be center backs, although the attacking returns of Trippier might outweigh the rotation.

Yes, I will be getting healthy in normal forn Trippier in also. The problem for me is that I will probably want Robbo back later and atm it looks like it is Laporte who has to go. 0.3 million in tv is also a factor. Robertson may also benefit from tougher fixtures and get more baps when they get cs.

Yeah, I'm looking at downgrading in GW15 to go slightly differential in attack and make up ground. Not completely sure whom I'm getting yet, and while they won't get more points than Robertson, they don't really need to if they're 1.5-2m cheaper and enable and bigger hitter up front.

Yep them too... I think while VVD & Allison are playing, you’re not really going to get a better defence than Liverpool & same with city.

Their 0-0 draw actually illustrated the point perfectly - two genuinely fixture proof defences.

Similar to Fraser/Wilson - I wouldn’t be divesting from Liverpool anytime soon, or possibly ever

            C) Mendy, Knockaert > AWB; Martial (play Billing)

            Kepa,
            Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, Mendy
            Salah, Hazard, Rich, Knockaert
            Aguero, Arnie

The first signs of rotation will be felt in GW 15-16 with two game weeks in a space of 3 days.

Liverpool play three matches in six days and we are sure to see some rotation during this time. I can definitely see the Liverpool full backs along with the front three rotated over this period.

How many Liverpool assets do you own and do you plan to shift the likes of Salah & Mane over this period?

                  Ryan Fraser ya beaut.

Repeat that against the Gunners and you can stay in my team for as long as you like.

I sold him for salah for hit . now will keep salah for 3,4 gws. Captains salah did help me though

I shipped him out a couple of weeks ago. Bournemouth face some pretty tough opposition until February and their previous opponents only included 1 of the top teams. Can't see Fraser and Wilson maintaining their form in the next dozen GWs.

Might be wrong, but that's my reasoning.

Fraser FDR rotates perfectly with Doherty our to GW38 (sole exception is GW20).

Really is tempting to sell Salah and be able to upgrade elsewhere, but would mean going with no LIV attack (unless you can count Robbo 🙂 ) for now I think - Mane has been fairly poor, so wouldn't be bringing him in...

You’ll want to be selling him AFTER he’s hit form, and not before.

There’s a 21 pointer out there over the Christmas period & I’ll be damned if I’m missing it, having stuck by him this far

They have only played one top club so far. Let's see how he has fared in the next 12 GWs.

Barring any other injuries, etc., do these moves I've got lined up look decent? Leaves me with the same 0.2 ITB

Mendy --> Digne (good fixtures and attacking threat, and rotates fairly well with AWB for his tough fixtures eg LIV)
Quaner --> Jiminez (strengthens squad for busy fixture period)

                    Fab Hamer
                    Alonso Robertson Doherty *Digne* AWB
                    Salah Hazard DSilva Fraser Diangana
                    Aguero Arnautovic *Jiminez*

If you had to pick ONE of these, who would you go for?

                    A) Laporte (from GW14)
                    B) Trippier (from GW15)
                    C) Bellerin (from GW16)

                      B if nailed.
C is very tempting at 5.4 With attacking intent

Trippier looks v nailed so far this season.

The question is whether he'll be fit soon.

Aurier will eat at least 2 of his games from now to festive period imo.

Wasn't there a Wigan defender that ended up playing striker?

Remember buying him and getting burned.

For anyone on a wildcard like me and currently has fabs, best to sell him quick as he is on -97% to drop.
So sell now and buy back later for a cheeky 0.1 profit
