Captains

Manchester City options early favourites for Gameweek 14 captaincy

Manchester City’s attacking options are expected to be the early favourites for the Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 14 captaincy.

You can now vote for who you believe to be the best option for the armband in the poll below, or on the sidebar of our website.

Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) goes into a home match against Bournemouth on the back of his fourth double-figure haul of the campaign, as he scored 16 points in the 4-0 win over West Ham.

In every league match that the England international has played at the Etihad Stadium, bar one, this season he has either matched or outscored colleague Sergio Aguero (£11.5m).

The Argentinian’s latest blank on the road, his fifth from a possible six in 2018/19, may detract from his percentage in this poll.

However, Aguero has the advantage of still starting every single match there this year, while Sterling was rested for appealing home encounters with Huddersfield and Burnley in Gameweeks 2 and 9 respectively.

The injury to Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m) may also be a factor in managers’ decisions. If his injury is only enough to keep him out of the midweek Champions League action and not the weekend, then either one of Sterling or Aguero could play up front against Lyon and then miss Bournemouth. However, Jesus’ injury could also be bad enough to rule him out of both matches.

After both scoring three goals in as many matches Leroy Sané (£9.3m) and David Silva (£8.6m) could prove excellent differential options with just 5.8% and 10% ownership respectively.

However, Eden Hazard (£11.1m) has the opportunity to make up for his recent poor returns with an appealing home match against Fulham.

The Cottagers may be under new management but they still managed to concede twice to a goal-shy Southampton side in Gameweek 13.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and his Liverpool colleagues have an unpredictable Merseyside Derby on Sunday afternoon. The Egyptian has delivered in all but one of his home matches this season, the only blank coming against Manchester City in Gameweek 8, so the case for captaining this week still holds some water.

Another derby takes place on the same day in Gameweek 14, with Arsenal hosting a Spurs side fresh from thrashing Chelsea 3-1.

Harry Kane‘s (£12.3m) recent return to form may make a case for the captain’s armband, as he has five goals in his last six matches against Arsenal.

Sterling, Kun, Sane all starting tonight... First one subbed is starting v Bournemouth, and any who play 90 are rested for Bournemouth sound about right?

They have to play a decent team at Bournemouth. He could just as easily hook them all after 60 mins if they are ahead with a view to do the same at the weekend. Keep playing the strongest side

Injuries might force his hand. I reckon tonight's lineup starts against Bournemouth. Gundogan doubtful, Bilva out, Foden?? Or Delph into midfield and Zinchenko full back possibly.

Not many options for him, that's why Mahrez is in the middle tonight.

    Premiums worth considering right now:

    MAN CITY
Aguero(11.5m) - Always returns on home fixtures, struggles away. Rarely plays 90 mins.

Sterling(11.3m) - Consistent performer, usually returns against non-top6, rotation risk but seems preferred.

Sane(9.3m) - Always returns when he plays 90mins so far, Mendy's injury makes him less of a rotation risk. Could be great value for the next 2 months.

Dilva(8.6m) - Almost nailed so far, with great returns, but with fixture congestion i expect him to miss some matches.

    LIVERPOOL
Salah(13.0m) - Great, consistent asset but with a really high price tag.

Mane(9.9m) - Returns half of the games but doesn't pass the eye test, price seems affordable.

    SPURS(Great fixtures GW15-..)
Kane(12.3m) - After a slow start he seems to have taken off, no real rotation risk but with a high price tag.

Eriksen(9.3m) - Fairly consistent fpl pick the previous seasons, this year has been quite unlucky for him, expected to bounce back. Seems to assist much more rather than score(Hasn't scored yet).

Alli(8.9m) - Has been injured half of the matches so far, will probably play most matches. Good price.

Son(8.3m) - Cheap spurs cover, hasn't played a lot so far. Seems dangerous.

    CHELSEA
Hazard(11.1m) - Great returns on the start of the season, 5 blanks in a row(Injured in 2), yet he is the only Chelsea asset worth considering.

    ARSENAL
Aubameyang(10.9m) - Consistent performer even as a substitute. Almost nailed. Scores a lot.

    Lacazette(9.7m) - A lower price Aubameyang.

    MAN UTD

I would summarise as: Choose 3 from Kane, Kun, Salah, Haz, Sterling

Alonso, Robbo, Trent, Ederson all offering value that the premium attackers can't compete with - need a solid base of premium GK + premium defenders + 3 of the attacking goliaths imio

Alonso has gone off the pace. Keepers get save points and are rarely worth the extra for a premium option. I agree with the 2 Liverpool boys. Tremendous value for the best defensive side in the league.

People need to chill on Alonso - every time he doesn't return double figures the knees start to tremble. He has 14 goals, 14 assists, 35 clean sheets and 40 bonus points in 77 FPL games and is the best defender to ever be available in FPL, and one of the best players to ever be available.

If you look at the value side of things - Alonso, Ederson, Laporte, Robbo, Trent & Trippier are all offering 10-11 points per million & beyond.... Sterling, Salah, Kun, Haz are absolutey smashing it this year & are offering around 8-9 PPM.

That's why i feel three of those 5 big attackers is a nice complement to the value premium defenders - has been working well from an OR perspective. But its not worth losing 3 premium defenders to fit in one extra premium attacker imo

Alonso's average points per game is 5 over the last 9 games. He really has slowed down recently.

The Alonso criticism any time he doesn't get double figures always reminds me of the Monty Python scene from Life of Brian - What have the Romans Ever Done For Us? Its basically '' Yeah, but what has Alonso done LATELY''..

With a TV of 105.4, to get all 5, this is what my team would look like:
          Fab, Hamer
          TAA, AWB, Doherty, Digne, Bennett
          Sane, Sterling, Haz, Brooks, Obiang
          Kun, Kane, Arnie

i dont get the obsession with Jimenez on here

              - only 3 goals all season
              - Wolves not good going forward (even in their better run of form)

Mitro seems better option to me

Price is a factor. I have owned him all season and he does get the odd assist as well. I do think Ings is a really good option as well even if he hasn't yet shown it.

Anybody have Auba/Lacazette in the back of their minds when considering City assets? Sane over Sterling really allows an upgrade of Wilson to Laca.

Over the next 3 GWs I can do:

    Salah > Sane
    Maddison > Silva
    Aguero > Kane
    Robertson > Balbuena
    Wilson > Lacazette

Not reading too much into the theory that players won't start at the weekend just because they play a midweek game. I think managers, especially someone like Pep plays or rests a particular based on his tactics/opposition. A 3/4 day rest is ideal for young players; that's the least that is expected out of them.

I think Lyon are up for a thrashing here. The defeat at Etihad must be fresh in Pep's head and he wants to top the group in some fashion.

I suppose both could be fit for the weekend. If they're still doubts though I reckon this lineup is quite likely.

Also depends on if B. Silva and Gudogan are fit and available. If not and with KDB out aswell he will start for sure given the lack of options left for Pep

Strangely captaincy options this week rest on the fitness of Jesus and hazard

If Jesus fit dangerous to captain city asset
If hazard fit then doesn’t matter as much

If Jesus fit and hazard injured = Salah !!??

Hazard might be fit and start alongside Morata and still flop. I'm going with Sterling (c) and Sane (vc) for the weekend.

All good except for Fab. Hammers just aren’t keeping sheets. I would prefer Ederson plus Digne to Fab plus Laporte on Wc (or Alisson)

Between Digne awb and Doherty you can always field one or even two each week

It's a possibility that we see the same front 3 again at the weekend with Mahrez again playing central. IMO it is Dilva who is unlikely to start as Pep has said multiple times that his minutes will be managed and he can't play 3 games in a week.

Now waiting for "you can't second guess Pep.." comments.

Dilva is City's most important player, had a season ticket for the entirity of the time Dilva has been here and when he plays City play, Pep will play him whenever possible especially now no International commitments especially whilst KDB is out

Martial starting... after Mourinho said before Palace game he wasnt sure Martial would be able to play three games in a week. Worrying for owners, right?

I love how City give away 'soft' fouls just around the halfway line a lot of times, not allowing the opponent to go about creating something dangerous.

Maybe I missed it but... has there been much TAA hype his week? A 5.0 attacking full back, playing in a world class defence, with the bonus of set pieces, really thought there would be more print dedicated to him.

Guess it’ll take another haul or two before he gets proper mainstream mass hysteria coverage.

There is (or was) the risk of rotation or simply not being first choice given he hasn’t been defending well

I already have a backline of Robbo, Alonso, Doherty, AWB & Balb.

Worth upgrading one of them to double up on Pool you reckon?

    Here's my team, lads:

    Fab / Patricio

    Alonso / TAA / Doherty / Duffy / Balbuena

    Salah / Hazard / Martial / Richarlison / Fraser

    Kun / Arnie / Success

Is it reasonable for me to do Martial-Sané, Arnie-Ings for a hit?

Although I'm well aware Arnie is a much better option than Ings, that would be exactly the money I'd need for Martial-Sané. Should I do it? Or what should I do instead?
