Manager Melee: Matchday 1

With failed captaincy choices, the new manager bounce, red cards, unexpected results, and 18 millimetres denying a goal (The Jimenez one) the “Manager Melee” competition began in a bizarre Gameweek 13. You know it was a GW to forget for FPL managers around the world when not one of AZ, Joe, Andy, Luke, David, or FPL General could muster more than 37 points.

The following are how the 4 pots look at the end of GW13 (seeding round) nightmare:

Pot 1

As winners of our photo editing competition “When ‘Arry Met Sarri” had the top spot in Pot 1. Thankfully their photoshopping skills were much better than their FPL managerial skills as they finished a lowly 14th in the seeding round, which would have placed them in Pot 4 otherwise.

Leading the seeding on points were “Finding Nuno” with a whopping score of 560 led by their manager “Pirlo’s Pen” who accrued a score of 76, which also happens to be the highest score by any player in the competition this week.

Keeping in tradition with their managerial avatar, “RobboKlopp” pushed them till the end, eventually finishing 2nd with a score of 556, to join them in Pot 1.

“The Silence of the Lambert” did most of their talking on the pitch and nabbed the final spot in Pot 1 with a score of 544.

Pot 2

“Thor: Wagnerok” finished top of Pot 2 with a score of 519 aided by a “Sterling” performance from ‘Lord Tachanka’.

“Hughes line is it Emery?” were next with a score of 501 for whom their manager, ‘Balders’, top scored.

“Guardiolas of the Galaxy” didn’t perform like a Guardiola team and had to settle for 3rd spot in Pot 2 with a score of 485

Rounding up Pot 2 were “Dirty Zidancing” who strut their way into it with a score of 477.

Pot 3

Chasing them madly were the “American Dycho” who eventually couldn’t catch them & topped Pot 3 with 474 points.

“The Godfather: Pardew” showed their “moves” a bit too early & eventually finished 2nd in Pot 3 with 473 points.

“The Big Bang Thierry” had their theory matched by “Alice in Wengerland” who both finished with a score of 472 to take up the last 2 spots in the pot.

Pot 4

Topping the bottom pot were “The Hills Have Moyes”, who clearly need to have a lot more besides Moyes if they are to make inroads in the competition. Notably, they also had the lowest scoring player in the competition this week, a certain FPL General with a score of 25 points.

It was all smoke and no fire as “Howe to Train Your Dragon” finished runners-up in Pot 4.

And then coming to the Show-stoppers, the Trendsetters, the Galacticos: “Claudio with a Chance of Modballs”. A star-studded XI of Mark, Joe, Andy, Luke, David, Geoff, ZoumasBloomers, RedLightning, G-Whizz, Legomane led by their manager AZ succeeded in narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon by 2 points, finishing with a combined “monumental” total of 438 points.

And the winners of the Wooden spoon for the seeding round were “Neville Wears Prada” who ended up with a score of 436 points.

The live draw then took place in Champions League style to determine the groups with every group consisting of a team from each of the pots. The results of the live draw led to the 16 teams drawn in the following 4 groups, which are named after some FPL cult heroes:

The squads of all the 16 teams can be viewed here.

The fixture format of the tournament is akin to the Champions League format with every team facing each other twice (home and away). The fixture list for Matchday 1 sees Pot 1 go up against Pot 4 & Pot 2 face Pot 3. With that rule in place, the following are the fixtures for Matchday 1:

Group Anichebe

Dirty Zidancing vs American Dycho

Finding Nuno vs Claudio with a chance of Modballs

Group Brunt

Guardiolas of the Galaxy vs The Big Bang Thierry

RoboKlopp vs Neville Wears Prada

Group Cuellar

Thor: Wagnerok vs The Godfather: Pardew

The Silence of the Lambert vs Howe to Train Your Dragon

Group Demel

Hughes Line is it Emery? vs Alice in Wengerland

When ‘Arry Met Sarri vs The Hills Have Moyes

The complete fixture list can be viewed here.

With the platform now set for the commencement of the first matchday of the Manager Melee competition, it’s an appropriate time to remind all the managers of the rules.

  • The managers have to submit a list of 8 members at ffscommunityorganisers@gmail.com before the deadline of each GameWeek.
  • Every member of the list plays their counterpart in a H2H format with a win resulting in 1 points accrued for the team, a draw & loss results in 0 points.
  • The first member of the list is considered the captain of the team whose victory results in 2 points for his team.
  • In case a manager fails to send his team before the deadline the lowest scoring 8 players would be considered with the lowest scorer picked as the captain (Let’s hope we don’t see any of this).

With the nitty gritty things out of the way, it’s time for the managers to get their thinking caps/overcoats/jackets on, get their strategies right, and showcase their managerial prowess.

*Kick off whistle blows*

It doesn't even matter how many points they get as both sides will get the same amount, so it cancels out 😀

I agree. 2 legs for KO rounds will make it more fun. Thoughts?

I think that would make the tournament run on too long. One of the main take aways from last year was that it simply ran on a bit too long and people lost interest and participation in the articles died off.

Last year the decision to make KO rounds were taken very late.
After the group rounds half the teams are out. So you already lose 8 team’s interest. But those 8 can be interested a bit too long with double headers.
Completely your call but these community tournaments are fun always imo.

Well thank goodness Big Bang Thierry are a bunch of Leonards who seem to have forgotten that they had a match last GW.

In other news Neville might wear Prada but the Guardiolas of the Galaxy are going to wear them like a slipper

Post-match presser - Big Bang Thierry vs GotG

Shreeves 'Well done, Thierry. You've assembled a team full of lesser known figures and had a good first outing. You must be pleased.'

Thierry 'Yes. They played well. I told them to try and keep the ball at all times, and in the end they had many balls in their pockets.'

S (chuckling) 'We saw you talking to some of the GotG players after the game. What did u discuss?'

T 'I went up to Klopptomist and I wished him well for the remaining matches. We spoke about today's game. He said that they had mastered the ability of standing so incredibly still, that they become invisible to the eye. And I agreed. They were pretty invisible on the pitch.'

      'I am Gnuuuuu'

      T 'What was that?'

S 'Oh that's just one of their players.'

      'I am Gnuuuu'

S 'So what do you have to say about beating a team with such good players?'

      T - https://m.imgur.com/a/fW5pqYr

S 'Good luck for the upcoming Gameweeks.'

      T 'Merci'
