Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City appear to be the two sides at the centre of this week’s captaincy debate.

Both clubs have favourable fixtures in Gameweek 17 as well as some interest options for the armband.

As usual, we are here to compare the players themselves, their clubs, their opposition in order to work out which player should be our captain this weekend.

Captain Poll

Harry Kane (£12.6m) is our runaway poll leader for Gameweek 17 as Tottenham prepare to host Sean Dyche’s struggling Burnley side. He tops the pile with the backing of 46% of the vote, despite his no-show at Leicester in Gameweek 16 and an intense outing at Barcelona midweek. We are sure that the bulk of his support is chiefly influenced by opponents Burnley, who we will assess later in the article. That and the fact that Kane has four goals and two assists in his last five Premier League starts.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) is proving the second-most popular captain choice this week with 17% in the poll. That makes him the most fashionable Manchester City option ahead of their meeting with Everton on Saturday lunch-time. Sterling has four goals and five assists in the last seven Gameweeks but hasn’t registered attacking returns for the last two.

Up next is last week’s poll winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) who comes in with 10% backing with Arsenal travelling to Southampton this week. The Saints are still in a transitional period with new manager Ralph Hasenhuttle fresh in his role and the Gunners, given their attacking form, are expected by many to record a comfortable win at St Mary’s Stadium. Aubameyang has registered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks. The fact he was rested for Thursday night’s Europa League match indicates he should get an eighth successive Premier League start on Sunday afternoon.

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) looks to be the best of the rest heading into Gameweek 17 with a backing of 4.56%. Chelsea travel to Brighton this weekend, where they emerged 4-0 winners last season. The Belgian has four assists in his last three matches but is without a goal of his own since Gameweek 8.

Despite last week’s hat-trick, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains in the differential section of another captain poll. Ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Manchester United, just 3.93% of our voters are confident enough to hand the Egyptian the armband. That could prove a sensible decision considering that Salah has never scored or assisted against Manchester United in the Premier League.

Gameweek 17’s potentially powerful alternative Son Heung-min (£8.5m) sits just behind the Liverpool man on 3.44%. The fact that such a small number are backing him this week, those putting the armband on him may feel more confident in doing so, as the effect could be bigger.

The effect of Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy means that, despite Manchester City being at home, Sterling is the only of their options above 3% backing in this poll. Leroy Sané (£9.5m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) are the next most popular but have been chosen by 2.03% and 1.61% of voters respectively.

Reds have now been delivered another major blow as their No. 66 has been ruled out of Sunday’s match against Man United and next Friday’s trip to Wolves.

He could also miss the Boxing Day game against Newcastle, and the following match against Arsenal.

It’s hoped though that he will be back available for the visit to Manchester City on January 3.

If I keep Lacazette I have to keep a very cheap 5th midfielder (currently Diangana).
If I switch to Mitro I can upgrade Diangana to Felipe Anderson and rotate my front 8 / cope better with players being rested over Christmas.

I have got in Mitrovic. Nice fixtures despite being close to one game ban. As you say, the extra cash gives a lot more flexibility in midfield etc also Lacazette price is awkward and doesn’t lend itself to flexibility I find

Following on from yesterdays post by Irbox, 'Sane v Sterling For The Armband' (linked in Hot Topics, worth a read if you haven't already), I've run some analysis on City, specifically down the left side when Mendy is out, and these are the combinations used by Pep in the PL and CL so far this season...

Man City 2-1 Hoffenheim (Zinchenko, Sane)
Chelsea 2-0 Man City (Delph, Sane)
Watford 1-2 Man City (Delph, Sane)
Man City 3-1 Bournemouth (Zinchenko, Sane)
Lyon 2-2 Man City (Zinchenko, Sane)
West Ham 0-4 Man City (Delph, Sane)
Man City 6-0 Shakhtar (Zinchenko, Sterling)
Hoffenheim 1-2 Man City (Laporte, Sane)
Man City 2-0 Brighton (Zinchenko, Sane)
Cardiff 0-5 Man City (Delph, Sane)
Man City 1-2 Lyon (Delph, Sterling)
Man City 3-0 Fulham (Delph, Sane)

What's interesting is how many games Sane has started, 10/12, and the fact that Sterling has only featured on the left in the Champions League, never in the Premier League when Mendy is out.

When you add in Pep's quote about Mahrez competing with Sterling for a spot in the 11, should we feel more confident sticking the armband on Sane rather than Sterling going forward?

You do realize that the quote about Mahrez and right winger was something like "Mahrez is also an option there". However, that does not mean Sterling could not move to the left when that happens.

I imagine a rotation of attackers during xmas will make us see all of these combinations:

      Sane - Aguero - Sterling
      Sane - Aguero - Mahrez
      Sterling - Aguero - Mahrez

If you also add the fact that Jesus could be LW or RW, Bernardo could be a RW, there is not much to suggest that Sane will play more than Sterling. All will be rotated, and it is just guesswork to say who will play more. Time will tell, and Pep is an unpredictable fellow ^^

Good points, KDB back clouds the situation further as like you say, Bernardo then becomes an option on the right too. I just think it's interesting Sterling hasn't started on the left in the league when Mendy isn't available. There might not be anything in it, but I think it's worth monitoring going forward.

I reckon Sane will start when Mendy isn't available. Sterling can't really fill that void as he cuts in from the left rather than playing as an orthodox left winger - Sane's the only one that gives that option and that is shown with the amount of starts he has had.

      1. tokara
        • 11 Years

sterling played the left before and is better...becos he cuts in and curl with his right and scored a few

only problem is sterling played left, he cant cross or square the ball better than Sane

Another analysis on Pep rotation. Probably all know its a moot point. Get strong bench if have city assets is golden rule. And if want to captain only do penalty takers or if rested for game before it. Some people like pep defy logic in selection due to wealth of options he has.

Kane(c) because of ownership and likely EO. But own both Sterling and Auba so not that worried if I own and don't captain.

Yeah I think it could be a tight game, with Mourinho using some of his last bits of old magic.

I'll go Liverpool 2-0 Man Utd, they are typically low scoring games, I'm not sure United have ever been this bad though.

Madness to consider getting rid of Robbo for the Xmas period? I would then replace him with Kola and add Son to the midfield? No value tied up in him really (0.1 loss) if that matters.

    Cheers

It could so easily be Kane v Cardiff all over again (it was that one he blanked in earlier in the season wasn't it?)

They are almost always rubbish after these games. I should've waited until next week. On the plus side there will be huge Kane captaincy. Can't rule out a haul but history says very much otherwise

I think Kane's got 2 goals and 1 assist in the 5 matches that have followed CL games this season, which isn't bad considering they've played City and Arsenal.

Isn't David Munday 16/16 on captaincy picks. Must be all that time spent researching these articles. Who is David going with?

If either Sane or Sterling are to be rested this week, it's Sane why is there panick over Sterling to be rested, he had his complete rest against Watford?

Sane will play, as will Sterling imo

Looking at their minutes recently, neither are in need of a rest. I think both will play and one will be rested vs Palace.

I have currently no City players in my team. For two weeks only. Would you choose Hazard, Sterling or Sane?

I have the latter 2 and I know the trick is to stick with them long term, but I do have an yearning for Hazard. I think it's the pens and bonus. Great fixture run he's about to go on too.

If Sterling blanks or is rested vs Everton, I might be tempted to do Sterling + Dunk to Hazard + Lovren.

Snodgrass needs a tweak on RMT. They have him scoring less points than Kenedy over the next 6 GWs.

Thinking about a -4 hit to do

    In: Schindler & Son
    Out: Laporte & Richarlison

Not convinced Son will start tho..
On the other hand City's clean sheets seem to be drying up
