Earlier in the season Dimitar Berbatov almost prompted me into using my precious Wildcard. A sublime hat-trick at home to Liverpool sent the pulse racing and the urge to tinker seemed overwhelming. The Bulgarian looked irresistible and, having been handed a modest price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, almost essential.

Thoughts gathered, I managed to keep the knee from jerking and my Wildcard remained intact. I spent the Gameweeks that followed thanking my lucky stars that I’d resisted as Berbatov, without the influence of Wayne Rooney alongside him, struggled to recall similar form. He proved to be anything but essential.

Today, the day I actually did throw my FPL Wildcard into the ring, the Berbatov bomb exploded once more. Five goals in a 7-1 mauling of Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford will grab the headlines on day when the Premier League went off the rails – 36 goals in total – not a clean sheet in sight. Madness…

Such insanity can be problematic for Fantasy Managers. The irony of such an avalanche of goals and such an individual performance on the day I play my Wildcard is not lost on me. In many ways I’m relieved; my tinkering itch has been well and truly scratched in the last 24 hours – the urge for more squad surgery is exhausted.

For others, probably thousands of others, Berbatov’s incredible performance and record FPL points haul will doubtless lead to one of the biggest bandwagons in memory. Tonight the scalpels will be out, hurried calculations will be made, points hits considered, more sleep lost. Berbatov has once again caused a big stir in our community. Not bad for a player who is often accused of failing to break sweat on the pitch.

And no, I didn’t sign Berbatov with my Wildcard but I’m happy enough regardless. My day and my Wildcard was anything but spectacular, but I’m content enough to opt out of the frenzy that Berbatov will cause and for that, I’m thankful.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I’m really worried that the Newcastle game will be called off – but not in the least bit surprised.

Typical really, I’m on 51 with 4 to come. No Berbatov either.

Annoying thing is that the Geordies wouldn't care if it was minus 10, they'd still be there in t shirts, but it'll be up to the club and council re Health and Safety, I think

It won't be too bad for you as you'll only lose 1 player.

I guess it'll mean a DGW though if it's called off... and hopefully will be played very very soon.

What are you going to do with him and Coleman?? Getting Coleman in has been an unmitigated disaster for me.. 1, 0, 2, 1, have been his scores since I bought him.

Thinking of getting rid of Jussi too. He's pissing me off beyond belief... It's just as well that no one, especially Birmingham, didn't keep a cleanie today or else I'd be beyond livid. Contemplating getting Flapphandski in!! It's either him or Begovic.

Coleman i'm keeping. It's either him or Simpson and newc's fixtures are dreadful as you know. I also think after the dire showing today Moyes might just give Coleman some more time. My beastly all serb defence will be no.1 anyway with Coleman on the bench.

Arteta is obviously out. Tons of possible replacements, not decided on any yet.

Flappy - hell no. Depends on how long Turner and Bramble are out for but Gordan still could be a good shout.

My brother said at the beginning of the season that he didn't think Boselli would score a single league goal all season.

Amusingly, he could very well be right. That penalty was pitiful and horribly inevitable.

Guardian chalkboards have it down as an assist, an it's a very short pass so I can't see how it would have been deflected or anything.

I reckon the PA have just missed it out.

            Why?

Your new owners want more then some pub team.

He will be gone soon enough even more so if they ever look as fourth rate as they did today.

Mourhino did a great job at Chelsea but the owner wanted to be entertained.

I bet you can't remember the last time you were entertained at Blackburn, there is a reason why the season tickets are under 200.

last week when we beat villa 2-0

you are right, there is a reason why they are under 200. blackburn is a very poor, run down area. it is full of non english people, most of which have no interest in football. there are 7 other PL teams within 1 hour drive, plus burnley & preston within 15 minutes drive.

we didn't even fill our stadium when we won the league.

we know you southerners incl the press hate our style, but we are happy that way.

Totally random, but has anyone seen 'Man v food' on either travel channel or 'good food HD'? Should be called '50 Ways to be fat/sick as fcuk' but who cares?
Guy takes on challenges in US food joints, 60oz steaks, 7lb burgers, 5lb burritos etc!!!

darren bent's 2 bps today was very unlike darren bent. normally when he scores 1 in a losing performance he would never get a bp. he's the kind of player who needs a brace, a hattrick or score the only goal of the game to get bps

Just got back from me hols, what a horrendous score...and what a mess of a team to pick one free transfer for next week, it's going to be a long week of decisions before biting the bullet.

In your position it can't get any worse. Your team isn't that bad. Odem, Fabs & your defenders are the main issues.

Not a single clean sheet today - picking defenders is increasingly about finding cheap players who are likely to score goals.
