Captains

Captain Sensible – Aubameyang can challenge Salah and Hazard

It looks like a three-way battle for the Gameweek 22 captaincy this weekend.

Fantasy Premier League managers are having to think big as we head into the first round of action for some time.

With the wealth of premium options all in decent form at the start of 2019, choosing the right captain could prove harder than ever.

We’re here to analyse the debate from all angles by looking at individual data, team attacking statistics and opposition defences.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) is set to win the Gameweek 22 captain poll as, at the time of writing, he has 40% backing from the voters. The Egyptian faces Brighton on Saturday afternoon having scored 12 points in three of his last four Premier League outings. Salah’s ownership continues to rise again, now just over 42% after his excellent recent form, which is probably the reason why he has done so well in our poll. The Liverpool man seems to be returning to the ‘auto-captain’ status he ended the 2017/18 campaign in.

Some way behind Salah in second place is Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard (£11.1m). It appears that 23% of our voters are confident the Belgian will deliver in Gameweek 22 after two consecutive blanks to round off the hectic festive fixtures. If we are to believe that Hazard tends to punish those who sell him after blanks, maybe he is indeed set for some attacking returns at home to Newcastle on Saturday. The Magpies have registered just one clean sheet in their last five away matches.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) looks set to claim the bronze medal with his 11% backing ahead of Arsenal’s trip to West Ham. The Hammers still have just one clean sheet at home while Aubameyang has attacking returns in all but one away match against sides outside the top six this season.

Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is the best of the rest with just 6% backing, the voters suitably afraid both of the Wolves defence and the form that Manchester City have shown in Premier League matches. As we discussed in our recent League Cup notes, a 9-0 win over League Cup opposition could mean little when the top flight action is resumed. Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) has just a third of Aguero’s support, with 2% of the vote, with Leroy Sané (£9.5m) even further behind on 1.25%.

Sandwiched amongst those options are Harry Kane (£12.6m) whose 2.49% share is reflective of a match against Manchester United, while Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) remains the most popular West Ham man. The Brazilian has garnered 1.9% of the vote at the time of writing.

Richarlison (£6.9m) is the only other player over 1% while Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) and Son Heung-min (£8.8m) were close at the time of writing. The West Ham man on 0.95% and Spurs’ South Korean international with 0.83%.

Do people think Salah (bro) outscores Fanderson (ARS) by more than 8 points ?

So Salah scores 10 and Anderson scores 2. They are the same.

So you think Salah goes further than 10 points ? What’s your reasoning ?

        Cheers

I think Anderson should be around 5 with an assist requiring Salah to get 12.

Think Salah is very likely to get at least 8 with a goal an no BPS but not sure he'll get much more than that.

Yeah I’m thinking around 5 for Fanderson being his average expected. Makes it hard for Salah to make up ground with a -8. They both have upside as I was trying to use Salahs to justify it, but can’t.

Guess the only way is it to say it’s a “long term” move 😉

It’s Fanderson, Jiminez and Martial out for Salah, Kamara and puncheon.

It looks awful on paper but my bench is too deep right now. Currently benching Jiminez and Martial anyway !

It's not worth the -8 this GW. Will it cost -4 for the 3 moves next gameweek of have you used your FTs already?

Yeah it’ll be -4 next week.

more than eight sounds hard, but i think Salah gets 10+ (goal and assist)
I wouldn´t bet against Anderson vs THAT arsenal defense, so no will be my answer, based on the assumption both games will be high scoring and thus probably high scores from both players.

Managers with both Kane and Auba and no Salah this week? What is your plan? Get rid one of Kane/Auba to fit him in and if yes then whoch one? Or will you consider staying Salahless few more gws?

I have the same problem and keeping Auba and Kane this GW (Auba C). For the next few GWs Auba and Kane rotate well for captain options. If Auba blanks this GW and Salah goes crazy than I will probably take out Auba. Its also a question how do you invest the 2m extra you have by owning Auba and not Salah. Those 2m can give you Eriksen who has great fixtures in jan/feb.

hm, Morrison is there, slightly more expensive but also main target on set pieces but he is more the one that flicks or heading the ball to someone else, so he tends to get assists rather than goals. He is 4.7. Ecuele Manga is the cheapest nailed one, 4.4.He gives you less points attacking wise, just one assist so far and no bps points so far from 5cs. No yellows though, whereas the other two have 3 and 4 respectively. If just for saving and having a decent sub in some games prob Manga but if you are like me i would prob go for Bamba in the hope that when you play him he could get you something more. Bamba at this point is the best option but who knows if he will be-)

this depends on your strategy, is the fourth and fifth mid in rotation and will a downgrade to 4.5 mean that you can upgrade somewhere else and thus changing form rotation 3-4-3(4-3-3)(4-4-2) to a more set 3-4-3?

without knowing your whole team that question is difficult to answer

Haz Kane and Salah owner here and I was very tempted by Rich.

Bournemouth are poor defensively. Although having watched Everton v Leicester, Everton are not so exciting going forward and can easily see Rich blank.

I think Salah is a safe option considering most will be capping him.

Same as ZLADAN, I have Kane, Salah, Haz and Rich.
There is no way I'd pick Richarlison as capt. He's not playing CF at the moment, and just looked so lost on the wing when I watched him over xmas. I'd be happy if he managed to struggle through with just an assist! Everton were so poor vs leicester.

          I think it's the price.

People will want Sane or Sterling but the re-emergence of Man Utd as an attacking force has changed things. Why pay £9.5 for Sane when £1m less gets you Pogba who's nailed on and on pens?

Most have Hazard and Salad which makes Sane or Sterling extremely hard to shoehorn in as well.

          Simple economics, man.

IF Pep decides to play with KDB and Dilva in the middle then Bilva might play RW, then it suddenly leaves just one slot open for 3 players, and even in a mauling the player you choose could end up with a blank. And it´s not like City assets gives you more points than say Hazard/Mané/Son etc. I had Sané for a good run but selling him was because i knew this would happen, City players back from injury will affect both game time and also spreading of points. To me the picture is as following; they would prob score alot next weeks but i´m not sure holding one player will necessarily translates into more points than some of the other big guns from other top teams. And therefore, since i think players like Haz/mané, rashford, there is no room for having two. Last time City double was a smart move coincided with Liverpool and Spurs being not great attacking wise.

Yeah it’s a small risk but there is room to make alterations down the line. Planning to get Aguero in for Kane and then bring in Son when he’s back from Asia. Would have the cash to bring in another keeper if needs be

I would hold if I had him but I wouldn’t bring in. If you don’t have him already, go for rashford around that price imo

Don't know if I would invest so much upfront for such a weak mid. Only 1 premium mid would worry me.

i would rather if i chose to play with 3 prem strikers prob would have gone more mid price options in midfield. I would go Mané, and then possibly something like Pogba and Pereyra for Paterson and Brooks if possible. Assuming your fift mid is a fodder at 4.5 you have 3players in that bracket in midfield. Too unbalanced imo, and even if say Mané is not Salah, the money could give you a much more rounded team and thus more points. Having said that, 4 premiums could in some weeks just really shoot you up in ranks.

Richarlison, Sterling (C), Son, F.Anderson, Pogba
        Rashford, Kane

After reading this article, kind of regretting the Haz -> Salah(c) transfer this GW, shoulæve waited until next.
But should I go Auba for armband instead? More likely to haul this GW perhaps, but lacks the consistency of Mo.
