Captains

Captain Sensible – Aubameyang can challenge Salah and Hazard

It looks like a three-way battle for the Gameweek 22 captaincy this weekend.

Fantasy Premier League managers are having to think big as we head into the first round of action for some time.

With the wealth of premium options all in decent form at the start of 2019, choosing the right captain could prove harder than ever.

We’re here to analyse the debate from all angles by looking at individual data, team attacking statistics and opposition defences.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) is set to win the Gameweek 22 captain poll as, at the time of writing, he has 40% backing from the voters. The Egyptian faces Brighton on Saturday afternoon having scored 12 points in three of his last four Premier League outings. Salah’s ownership continues to rise again, now just over 42% after his excellent recent form, which is probably the reason why he has done so well in our poll. The Liverpool man seems to be returning to the ‘auto-captain’ status he ended the 2017/18 campaign in.

Some way behind Salah in second place is Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard (£11.1m). It appears that 23% of our voters are confident the Belgian will deliver in Gameweek 22 after two consecutive blanks to round off the hectic festive fixtures. If we are to believe that Hazard tends to punish those who sell him after blanks, maybe he is indeed set for some attacking returns at home to Newcastle on Saturday. The Magpies have registered just one clean sheet in their last five away matches.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) looks set to claim the bronze medal with his 11% backing ahead of Arsenal’s trip to West Ham. The Hammers still have just one clean sheet at home while Aubameyang has attacking returns in all but one away match against sides outside the top six this season.

Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is the best of the rest with just 6% backing, the voters suitably afraid both of the Wolves defence and the form that Manchester City have shown in Premier League matches. As we discussed in our recent League Cup notes, a 9-0 win over League Cup opposition could mean little when the top flight action is resumed. Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) has just a third of Aguero’s support, with 2% of the vote, with Leroy Sané (£9.5m) even further behind on 1.25%.

Sandwiched amongst those options are Harry Kane (£12.6m) whose 2.49% share is reflective of a match against Manchester United, while Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) remains the most popular West Ham man. The Brazilian has garnered 1.9% of the vote at the time of writing.

Richarlison (£6.9m) is the only other player over 1% while Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) and Son Heung-min (£8.8m) were close at the time of writing. The West Ham man on 0.95% and Spurs’ South Korean international with 0.83%.

Not sure, Kdb is back, mahrez was a sub midweek, raheem didn't play at all.
Wouldn't risk any city player this week.

A bit early, can't see Pep dropping Bernardo after his performance against Liverpool. It's surely only a matter of time before KDB is in the starting 11 though, so he will be a viable option soon.

I think he'll "risk" Matip as he looked far more reassured alongside VVD earlier in the season. It's one thing running with a non specialist CB in a Cup game quite another to risk it in the EPL. Im sure Matip has been ticking along in the gym whilst recovering from his collar bone injury so fitness shouldnt be an issue.

What do we think of these 3 moves for 2 FT and a hit. Will enable me to uprade F.Anderson to Pogba next week:

Aubameyang, Lingard & Yedlin >>> Barnes, Salah & Bednarek.

Concerned about Aubameyang but I think Salah should outscore him over the next 5/6 comfortably.

    Kane Auba
    Button - AWB - Jimenez - Doherty

Thanks to KopKloppers and Caldracula for their advice on previous page, I might be able to decide on a move this week with the 2ft's.

    What's the most useful move?
    A) Fabs to Guaita

    C) Other

    1. Martial, Kamara, Kolasinac, Fabiański -> Bernardo Silva, Rashford, Bednarek, Button ( later I will switch Stekelenburg to Ryan, and Diangana to Puncheon) (-8 next week)

    2. Fabianski to Button, and Sane for Martial, later Diangana to Puncheon (-4 this week)

    My team: Fabianski Stekelenburg
    Doherty Digne TAA AWB Kolasinac
    Salah Pogba Martial Richarlison Diangana
    Kamara Aubameyang Kane

    A) Bamba or Camarasa --> Holebas or Billing (Save 1 FT)
    B) Trippier & Billing --> TAA & Camarasa (play 352)

How are you in the rankings? in your mini leagues? if you need a differential i'd definitely go Aguero - city back to their best and Aguero's had some rest..

I'm a biased united fan but I don't think brighton away will be a walk over, why i'm swaying away from Salah....

I'd probably go Aguero > Hazard > Salah,

Team looking ok? Not owning Salah means a big sofa for the Pool game, and I know Martial isnt very favored on here, but giving him another chance.

    Fab
    TAA - Robbo - Digne
    Haz - Pogba - Martial - Richarlison
    Wilson - Kane(C) - Auba

    Doherty first on bench.

Rolling transfer to assess what to do next week. Possibilities of getting Salah or a City midfielder in next week.

I think Wilson needs to go

Not performing as he did at the start of the season.
          Injury doubt.
          Rumours he will be sold.
          Not very good fixtures.

I agree with Whazza, Have you got 0.2 to go Wilson > Arnie?

    Patricio (Button)
    Robertson, Digne, AWB (Holebas, Doherty)
    Sterling, Hazard, Pogba, F.Anderson, Richarlison
    Kane, Mitrovic (Ings)

    2FT £0.0 ITB.

Really want Salah this week, been tempted by F.Anderson > Puncheon, Sterling > Salah (not sure on moving on Sterling tbh)

Then with the money left I can do Mitro > Rashford next week and look to bring in TAA for Digne further down the line. Thoughts?

Personally keeping Sterling for this GW and giving him the armband then bringing in Salah the following GW and making him (C)

Yeah it’s a tough one, I’m torn. But I just don’t think I can survive another week behind the sofa watching Salah!

I think your plan sounds good. Removing Sterling any gameweek is risky, but it's riskier going without Salah..

Cheers, I know it’s risky, especially as Sterling has a rest midweek. But I think Salah could potentially be worth it

Definitely, if you want to captain him most weeks.

Removing sterling the week he’s got the worst team in the league? Personally not sure about that. City got the scoring touch back it seems... and now with KDB and Dilva back and fit I’m sure they’re gonna be smashing them in...

Would you get rid on Hazard over Sterling instead? (If you really wanted Salah)

    What to do here fellas?

    Pat
    TAA Digne AWB
    Salah Haz Son FAnderson
    Auba Jim Ings

    Hamer Doherty Hojbjerg Daniels
    1FT 0.3 ITB

Was planning to do Son+Auba>Redmond+Kane next week and then FAnderson>Eriksen/Pogba the week after, but the Ings injury news has put a spanner in the works - feels annoying to take him out when he'll be back in two weeks time and I'll want him back then anyway, but I'm concerned my bench won't be able to cover it well. Hojbjerg>Camarasa a good move maybe?

Ings to Barnes. Redmond is a risky pick, albeit cheap

Yeah - I also wildcarded this week, and I'm pretty tempted by Auba also - above article makes a good case!

I'm tempted too, but will be happy with his points anyway as he is a differential in my ML. If Salah goes nuts and Auba (c) blanks it's a lot more depressing 🙂

Better option (other keeper is Button)?

      A) Guaita (WAT Liv Sou FUL)
      B) Fabianski (ARS Bou Wol LIV)
