No blank or double FPL Gameweeks for Liverpool after Saints’ cup exit

Southampton bowed out of the FA Cup on Wednesday evening after losing their third-round replay to Derby County on penalties.

From a Fantasy perspective, the result was significant in that it confirmed that Liverpool – as they did in 2017/18 – will avoid a blank or double Gameweek in the season run-in (barring any future weather-related postponements, we hasten to add).

In Gameweeks 27, 31 and 33 (the set of fixtures that clash with the EFL Cup/FA Cup), Liverpool will face Manchester United, Fulham and Southampton away from home.

Liverpool’s trip to Craven Cottage is the solitary fixture that has so far been confirmed as definitely happening in Gameweek 31, while Huddersfield Town v Leicester City and Southampton v Liverpool are the only two Gameweek 33 matches that we can say for certain, at this stage, will avoid a clash with the FA Cup semi-finals.

As if they weren’t already popular Fantasy assets before, the likes of Mohamed Salah (£13.4m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.7m) will surely only become more in-demand as we navigate the blank Gameweeks in the months ahead.

Southampton 2-2 Derby County (3-5 penalties)

  • Goals: Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m), Nathan Redmond (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Shane Long (£4.7m), Jack Stephens (£4.2m)

As well as having implications for the Gameweeks ahead, Southampton’s FA Cup third-round replay defeat to Derby last night may have ramifications for their very next Premier League fixture – and owners of Everton assets.

The Toffees head to the south coast to face Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side on Saturday afternoon, less than 72 hours after the Saints were taken to extra time and penalties by their Championship opposition.

Reflecting on his team’s cup exit, Hasenhuttl said:

What hurts more is that we played 120 minutes on a Wednesday evening and we have to bring a good performance two days’ later against Everton at home.

That will be a challenge to get the players fresh again and for them to recover well. We will have to find fresh players to put in.

The Austrian head coach made only five changes to his starting XI from the side that defeated Leicester City in Gameweek 22, with Alex McCarthy (£4.4m), Jan Bednarek (£3.9m), Matt Targett (£4.2m), Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) and the suspended Yan Valery (£4.0m) dropping out.

Redmond, however, was introduced at half-time and played 75 minutes as Derby forced extra time, while Shane Long (£4.7m) and Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m) were handed 73 and 90-minute run-outs respectively.

Jack Stephens (£4.2m), Jannik Vestergaard (£4.6m), Oriel Romeu (£4.3m) and James Ward-Prowse (£5.0m)were the four first-teamers who started against the Foxes who then played a full two hours on Wednesday evening.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.4m), along with Charlie Austin (£5.5m) and Valery, will return from suspension in Gameweek 23 and it could be that Romeu or Ward-Prowse are handed a breather against Everton given what Hasenhuttl said above about fielding “fresh players”.

Fantasy managers who own the likes of Richarlison (£6.9m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) and Lucas Digne (£5.3m)would certainly have been content to see Southampton toiling for 120 minutes just days before their assets visit St. Mary’s.

Hasenhuttl didn’t seem overly downbeat to bow out of the FA Cup, highlighting the extra preparation time it will give his side ahead of future Premier League encounters:

I’m not that frustrated, it’s a pity we gave it [the lead] away two times, but I know that it will be tough until the end of the season.

I think it can be an option that if we aren’t in the FA Cup anymore, then we will prepare for the important games in the league.

You will see this if we prepare in the week with a lot of training sessions, then we will have more chance to be in shape and defend against a good team.

You always hear from managers saying that if they step out of the FA Cup that they can focus on the league. In our situation, it’s very important.

Hasenhuttl can’t be accused of deliberately orchestrating an early exit, of course, and his decision to throw on the influential Redmond at the break underscored his intent to win the tie.

The Saints had lined up in a now-familiar 3-4-2-1 at kick-off, with Kayne Ramsay (£4.0m) joining Vestergaard and Stephens in a back three, and Cedric Soares (£4.2m) and Tyreke Johnson (£4.5m) lining up as wing-backs.

However, Southampton had only registered two shots by half-time – a Stephens header from a corner and a Long sitter that Derby goalkeeper Kelle Roos kept out – and Hasenhuttl shook things up by introducing Redmond for the booked Johnson and switching to a 4-2-3-1.

Redmond was deployed first on the flank and then centrally in a “number ten” role when Hasenhuttl withdrew Armstrong and had a significant impact on the game – superbly chipping the Saints into a 2-0 lead, wasting a glorious opportunity in extra time and then missing the decisive penalty in the shoot-out.

The former Norwich City winger almost carved out a tap-in for Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.1m) and went on to register the joint-highest number of attempts on goal in the match.

Hasenhuttl said of Redmond’s display:

I was very upset about the chance he missed in overtime because he made the wrong decision. If he chipped it in like he did with the first goal, then it would have been perfect and maybe the winning goal from us.

He showed today that he is a key player for us. When he stepped in the game in the second half, we were the better team. He helps us a lot by creating chances.

The guy who makes the turnaround after the break is the guy who misses the penalty, but that’s football.

Oh free transfers should roll too.

Why the heck not?! Think this rewards casuals more than hardcore players, as they are more likely to forget about the game. Imagine you could come back to 7FTs.

I think this should be the case for the FH. Undecided for the WC but it's not as obviously silly as in the case of the FH imo

For both really. Using your chip is no off-the-cuff decision (or shouldn't be) and they're a big sacrifice. Effectively if I use a chip I've not used my FT for that week so why do I lose it? That's the real question... It's not like I've made all these changes at no loss, my loss is the chip I've chosen to use that week.

I would like 3 free transfers! I think it's a good idea. Maybe 5 free transfers an get rid of chips and one of the WCs. Or just get rid of the chips. Or just the 5 transfers limit and one WC, one FH. I'm not sure anymore.

Yeah, I've always said the game is just incredibly boring with just one transfer per week. And if you save it can get even worse with no transfers over two weeks. Given they need to get people to play for 9 months, this just slow pace isn't sustainable except for those on here who defend it out of habit or because they've had a couple of good seasons.

The amount of ft’s you had before you wildcarded is irrelevant - you will have 1ft the gw after you activate WC in all scenarios.

Premier League 38 game season clean sheet record is 25 clean sheets (Chelsea 04/05) - Liverpool have 13 from 22 so far this year. Anyone think they can get close to matching the record this year? (i.e. 12 more clean sheets from remaining 16 games) if not how many do we think they'll get from remaining 16 games ?

      you're missing 2 premium players i think. reads like a 3-4-1.

downgrade sterling and upgrade deloufou, at least.

Spread the cash, don't like playing two of Kiko/Bednarek/Deulo/Ings every week. Also ManC and Everton blank gw 27 and either Spurs or Chelsea too, wouldn't have two ManC now with that in mind.

My biggest dilemma right now is what to do with Kamara.

I want 3 outfield players with a blank in GW27 to hopefully give me more DGW players going forward. At the moment I have 3: Digne, Sterling and Sane, but contemplating buying another in Alli (potential blanker) or maybe late, KDB (cert), and then selling Digne for Pereira or something.

However, Kamara is screwing it all up, as I can only bench 2 GW27 blankers instead of 3. It's possible to switch the fodder to a decent midfield option in Puncheon or Camarasa, but I don't really want to spend the extra transfer re-jigging, nor lose a midfield slot.

Does anybody have similar frustrations with Kamara or where to save the most money in their team?

Who are the best cheap forwards to consider with GW27 in mind? If we're lucky, Kamara will still exist and could feature away to WHU. If we're not lucky, who is there?

    - Success (4.6), with a great fixture (car) who isn't worth the FT at the moment as his place is far from secure.

    - Zahore (4.6) (WAT), who could be a saviour if he's fit and preferred to Niasse

    - Niasse (5.0) (WAT) if he's preferred to Zahore (but this would probably be the limit of my budget)

    - Andone (5.0) (che) seems too much for limited minutes and tough fixture

    - Vokes (5.3) (TOT) could be a blank gameweek. If not, he's not worth the money for the fixture imo.

    - Caroll (5.4) (FUL) could be the answer if he playing time increases, which it may well do. He could even be useful as a rotation option in general, but currently not worth the investment.

    - Ings (ars) (5.5) again seems too much for this role as an injury risk and away at the Emirates

    - Llorente (5.6) (bur) again too expensive. If you go here, you would likely restructure your team with a Camarasa anyway.

Basically, it looks worse than slim pickings. It looks likely that those with Kamara will have to let him rot (which I don't want to do with blanks coming up) or restructure. What do you reckon?

This is one of the main reasons I like having bench fodder mid and not striker. Even if the mid has a blank gw, plenty of other options in that bracket, who will at least start and give like a 2 pointer, but striker of these prices are rarely certain starters.

With your situation, maybe Ings is the only one I'd consider bringing in. Otherwise just hope Kamara plays

If Puncheon is injured, who can Puncheon owners swap him for? You would need money ITB or it would still take two transfers like restructuring would, but I see what you're saying - IF you happen to have money in he bank.

Cheers for the feedback. I think Ings it at a price where, if I believed in him to spend that much, I should downgrade a mid to playif fodder anyway. In which case, I'm more likely go for Jimenez tbh

Brought in Kamara right before his yoga bust up as money saving bench fodder who starts GW27. I was annoyed that this turned out to be a wasted transfer but have gotten over it now. Realistically bringing him in was for his weekly 1 point in case of a rare 3 starting 11 missing games through injury or rotation + his 1 pointer over GW27.

I'm sure down the road there will be a week where I have 2 FTs and absolutely nothing to use either of them on right before a deadline. When that gameweek comes along I'll shift him and keep my 2 FTs rolling forward. But seeing as he was probably going to get me 1pt GW27, 1pt Bench Boost, and maybe possibly another 1-2pts from random times he plays because of others in my squad not, he's really not worth worrying about.

Unlucky with the Kamara transfer. It looked like he was being a chance to redeem himself before the yoga incident :/

He's got me 5ppg in the two games he played for me 😀

Ask yourself how often do you require your 3rd bench player and how much difference 2 points would make from them if they ever did have to come in.

I demand a lot from my players 😉

For the rest of the season prior to the blanks, it can be harmless to have fodder rotting on the bench, but in times like these, it can be very useful to manage the full team and plan to extract points from all of them.

If it ends up being 2 points, so be it. 2 points is better than 0, and it's not like I'm going to tear up my team for those two points, especially since I'm trying to find a way NOT to do that above.

But I only bought Kamara because I thought he could get more than 2 points on occassion, and I would love to find a way to give that opportunity to another up-and-coming fantasy prospect 😀
