The recent injury to Tottenham’s main man Harry Kane has reduced the Gameweek 23 captaincy debate to a one-sided affair.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah appears the favourite ahead of this weekend’s deadline but it is still worth digging deeper.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we analyse how each Fantasy Premier League asset has performed for underlying statistics for the last four Gameweeks, also examining the team they play for and the side they are facing…

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (13.4m) has completely and utterly dominated the Gameweek 23 captain poll, looking set for the biggest winning margin of the season.

The Egyptian has so far managed to garner support from 64% of voters, at the current time of writing.

Those that have plumped for him as the best option will obviously be looking at his form over the last seven Gameweeks, which has seen him score a total of 72 points.

Liverpool host Crystal Palace this week in a fixture that gives Jurgen Klopp’s men a strong chance of three points.

Likely because of Harry Kane‘s (£12.5m) recent injury, which will see him out until March, our voters don’t really see a viable alternative to Salah.

That is clearly shown by the fact that currently second in our poll is Paul Pogba (£8.5m) with just over a 6% share.

The Manchester United man could certainly prove a handy differential skipper in Gameweek 23. He has produced an attacking return in all but one league match since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford, and this week the Red Devils host Brighton.

Marcus Rashford (£7.5m) is also receiving similar attention, convincing 4.5% of our voters to suggest he is the best captain this weekend.

The England international has in four of the last five matches, and has assisted twice more. On current form, he seems to have held off competition from Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) and seems to be the most popular replacement for Kane among the FPL community.

Interestingly, Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is considered the most popular captain option from Manchester City, despite the form of Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m).

He has 3.8% backing in the poll, keeping him ahead of Leroy Sané (£9.6m) on 2.4% and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) on 1.8%.

    Morning!

Thinking of taking Hazard out for either Sterling or Sane. Will be a -4 but no one in my main cash Leagues have Hazard but they do have City cover.

Thoughts, is it worth the hit this week? Current team is:

    Fabs
    Digne - Robbo - Doherty
    Richarlison - Pogba - Hazard - Salah
    Firmino - Jiminez - Rashford

    Cheers!

I think your team (at least those 11) is very good 🙂

Hazard is season keeper for me, Sterling and Sane (when Mendy is back) are too big rotation risk imo.

For the first time this season, i am happy with my team and no imminent need of doing any transfers. Do you agree? The only thing i can think of is that the bench is weak.

    GKP: Patrício (Fabianski)
DEF: Doherty, Digne, Robertson (Bednarek) (Wan-Bissaka)
MID: Hazard, Salah (C), Felipe Anderson, Pogba (V) (Kenedy)
    FWD: Jiménez, Aubameyang, Rashford

  12. Aguero's away form this season
    FeverPitch

Aguero away form this season (prem unless stated):

    Arsenal - blank
    Wolves - blank
Lyon - blank (played 27 mins)
    Cardiff - 1 goal
Hoffenheim (Champions League) - 1 goal
    Liverpool - blank
    Spurs - blank
    West Ham - blank
Lyon (Champions League) - 1 goal
    Leicester (League Cup) - blank
    Leicester - 1 assist
    Southampton - 1 goal

Also note 2 goals at Wembley vs Chelsea at the start of the season in the Community Shield final.

    (Per https://www.whoscored.com/Players/14260/Fixtures/Sergio-Agüero)

Away from home, Aguero’s mins per attempt drops to 24.4 (from 15.7). However, this is still strong and beats Aubameyang’s mins per attempt both at home (29.8) and away (31.2). The main point I guess is that Aguero has played in some tough away fixtures this season, with the only really surprising blanks/non-goalscoring performances imo coming at West Ham, and twice at Leicester(where City drew one in which Kun blanked, and lost one in which Kun assisted - ie the whole team seemed to struggle in both these games).

Jesus’ form could perhaps mean less playing time, but I don’t think it’s changed Aguero’s status as first choice in prem/big games. Jesus has one goal against 11 man Wolves; his other strikes in this run of form have been against Rotherham, Burton and a penalty against 10 man Wolves. Aguero himself is coming off the back of a title revitalising world class finish against the league’s leader’s and top defence. He looked sharp from what I saw.

In summary - Aguero’s away form, although not as good as his stunning home form, is still decent, and I expect him to start and score in the majority of favourable away fixtures.

      Aguero's Premier League away form this season: 5/3 (1.7ppg) v big six, 19/5 (3.8ppg) v the rest.
      Aubameyang's Premier League away form: 6/3 (2.0ppg) v big six), 56/8 (7.0ppg) v the rest.

Conclusion: Both are very poor away v the big six, and Aguero is moderate away against the rest, but Aubameyang is excellent away against the rest.
At home however, Aguero and Aubameyang have both been excellent against any opposition.

Aguero may make more attempts, but Aubameyang is more clinical and contributes more to the team.
Overall, Aguero has 10 goals, 7 assists, 9 bonus points and 4 yellow cards (99/18=5.5ppg).
Aubameyang has 14 goals, 5 assists, 21 bonus points and no yellow cards (134/22=6.1ppg).
Aubameyang's form this season beats Aguero's hands down!

Interesting, thanks a lot. Good clarification. I guess I still think aguero’s ‘moderate’ away form vs non big six will improve; he’s had tougher fixtures than Auba. In fact Auba has had some plum away fixtures, and Kun has a few of those on the way.

Still, probably won’t bring him in this week... But I think he could be a great pick

Felipe and Fraser do have a GW 27 match dont they?.. I have a feeling Richa will go mental this week. Hard choice!

You can't trust Howe when it comes to his prime assets - Fraser, Brooks, King and Wilson.

In the same way you can't trust Hodgson about Zaha.
