Captains

Captain Sensible – Gameweek 23 a one-sided affair after Kane injury

The recent injury to Tottenham’s main man Harry Kane has reduced the Gameweek 23 captaincy debate to a one-sided affair.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah appears the favourite ahead of this weekend’s deadline but it is still worth digging deeper.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we analyse how each Fantasy Premier League asset has performed for underlying statistics for the last four Gameweeks, also examining the team they play for and the side they are facing…

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (13.4m) has completely and utterly dominated the Gameweek 23 captain poll, looking set for the biggest winning margin of the season.

The Egyptian has so far managed to garner support from 64% of voters, at the current time of writing.

Those that have plumped for him as the best option will obviously be looking at his form over the last seven Gameweeks, which has seen him score a total of 72 points.

Liverpool host Crystal Palace this week in a fixture that gives Jurgen Klopp’s men a strong chance of three points.

Likely because of Harry Kane‘s (£12.5m) recent injury, which will see him out until March, our voters don’t really see a viable alternative to Salah.

That is clearly shown by the fact that currently second in our poll is Paul Pogba (£8.5m) with just over a 6% share.

The Manchester United man could certainly prove a handy differential skipper in Gameweek 23. He has produced an attacking return in all but one league match since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford, and this week the Red Devils host Brighton.

Marcus Rashford (£7.5m) is also receiving similar attention, convincing 4.5% of our voters to suggest he is the best captain this weekend.

The England international has in four of the last five matches, and has assisted twice more. On current form, he seems to have held off competition from Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) and seems to be the most popular replacement for Kane among the FPL community.

Interestingly, Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is considered the most popular captain option from Manchester City, despite the form of Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m).

He has 3.8% backing in the poll, keeping him ahead of Leroy Sané (£9.6m) on 2.4% and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) on 1.8%.

How to spend my massive 5.1m???

    Fabianski (Button)
    Doherty, Alonso, Digne, Jonny (Wan-Bissaka)
Pogba, Salah, Richarlison, F. Anderson (Gunnarsson)
    Rashford, Aubameyang (Kamara)

    A. Don't waste 4 points
    B. -4 Kamara > Firminiho
    C. -4 Gunnarsson > Ali (0.1 shy of Sane!)
    D. -4 Jonny > Robertson (2.7 itb)

Have you looked at FAnderson for Pogba and a little bit more up front.

It’s a punt but Newcastle play CAR, HUD, Wol, BUR in the next 6 so Rondon might be worth watching at 5.7?

I like the squad. I agree about downgrading a defender to get a better striker option. You want to be able to change formation from 451 to 352 when needed. Ings constant injuries don’t give you that assured option.

Btw get Speroni fast before his price jumps to 4m tonight.

Aguero vc. Auba vs. Firmino in for Kane.

The program is very much in favor of LFC. Both with opposition teams, home games and time of rest/risk of rotation. What do you think?

    MCI:
    Matches: 5
    Days: 14
    Home/away : 2 home, 3 away
    Opposition: hud,burton,BUR,newcastle,ARS

    Arsenal:
    Matches: 4
    Days: 15
    Home/away: 3 home, 1 away
    Opposition: CHE, ManU,CAR,mci

    Liverpool:
    Matches: 3
    Days: 16
    Home/away: 2 home, 1 away
    Opposition: CRY, LEI, westham

The first of our DGW articles was posted yesterday: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2019/01/17/when-are-the-fpl-blank-and-double-gameweeks-likely-to-happen/

After reading this, what are your double gameweek plans?

Are you thinking about it yet? When do you hope to play your chips and your WC?

Are your transfers, now, taking into account the GW27 blank? Is Auba tempting you now because of his GW27 captaincy credentials?

A free hit for a double is a good tactic that’s overlooked on here.

Depending on how the one major blank GW affects your team. If you can get through that with 11 players, it’s far better to free hit on a DGW.

Sure, a wildcard + bench boost can give you potentially 32 players in one gameweek (15 doubles plus captain) but a free hit can give you 24 players (11 doubled plus captain)

This is far and away better than a triple captain, which in all likelihood just gives you one extra player (e.g. Auba x3 instead of Auba x2)

          1. tuvok
            • 5 Years
            5 years, 3 months ago

So, to clarify, use free hit and bench boost for the 2 DGWs.

Use triple captain randomly another time.

              • 6 Years

The likelihood is that there will be one more DGW for 2-4 teams. City/Spurs/Chelsea + opponents.

              TC should be used then.

Kane's injury forced me to retain Auba this GW and looking at his fixtures post Chelsea, he looks good enough till GW27. I might wildcard after GW 27 to bring back the City, Chelsea, and other DGW players. i guess we also get around that time a bit more clarity about teams with DGWs.
In case there is a mini DGW in GW25, might consider FH to maximise city and Everton assets.

I think I'll wildcard early this year. I got no value from saving it last year.

Might not use a FH chip on a blank GW either, depending on which teams play. If they're mainly rubbish teams there might only be an average of 25-30 points anyway. GW 31 looks particularly uninspiring.

This does leave the issue of how to bench boost, triple captain and FH when there might only be two DGWs.

Re Auba in 27 - yes, I'll probably get him in, but it's simply a case of arriving at GW27 with one, or maybe two transfers in the bag. It's not really a big issue.

Problem is that logic would say that TC should be played on a DGW. I said logic because Salah on a single GW last year (31) retured x10 more points than Kane TC on a DGW..

If a mini DGW is confirmed then I think you are spot on. FH on one of the DGW, BB on the other, and an early WC

*Salah scored 29 in BGW31 last year.

But how can you predict something like that?
Yusuf Sheik Triple Captained Salah for 11*3 in SGW38, which enabled him to become FPL champion.

Normally, however, the odds are in favour of getting a bigger TC score in a DGW than in a SGW, but the actual results don't always follow the odds.

Kane scored 1+2 in DGW22. It was very tempting to TC him then, but it was a bit risky because he was still recovering from an injury at the time.

Saving my WC for now, no pressing issues.

Will wait and see how it develops for the chips and use them when it feels right. I hate having a set plan so early, let's see what happens with my team and what happens with the fixtures before deciding.

I have no idea. I've overthought this time of year too many times, going to go 'light' with my planning this year and hope stuff just works out somehow.

Very much doubt this is sensible but it's certainly low stress 🙂

I no longer have my triple captain chip and currently only have Hazard who could miss GW27. I'm hoping to manage the further blanks without using my chips, free hit in 32, wildcard in 34 and bench boost in 35.

I'm surprised I haven't seen more people going with this, what are the negatives I'm missing?

      Before GW24 we will know:

      1) Who will blank in GW27
      2) The FA Cup 5th round draw
      3) The players teams will have for the rest of the season when the transfer window shuts.

I think when we know these 3 things we should be in a better position to come up with likely strategies. I think now is a little bit too early, though with Liverpool playing GW31 and 33, my early hunch is that FH32, WC34, BB35 and TC at some other point (hopefully a 3rd DGW) could be the way forward.

Nicely put, I agree with all of that.

The one thing I would say is that with City blanking I am a little bit leaning towards getting Aubameyang now over a City midfielder. I don't want to have to try to get that money out of midfield later really

Agreed. That’s why I’ve gone Auba over Aguero or any city mids. Plus the rotation is just shocking, my bench is weak, so I need sure starters.

Not using WC imminently, thinking two weeks ahead of bigger DGW is ideal.

FH for blank or hold for GW38 to maximise returns on the free-for-all that it can be.

TC needs careful consideration for fixtures and form over DGW, as I've held firm to DGW and been burned.

BB on the bigger DGW ideally.

Spent a bit of time thinking about this and I think the best and simplest way is to go for the ben crellin and fplplanet podcast preferred option

Build team up for blank 31

        32 free hit (dgw)

        33 blank

        WC34

        35 dgw bench boost

This means you can max out on the dgws without preplanning - and only really need to think about the blank 31.

The drawback is that you need to play triple captain on a single framework. However salah has a number of good options - esp hudds at home gw36

This seems to me to be the most straight forward way of going about if.

Definitely FH in a blank for me.

I FH in a DGW last season when everyone else did FH in a blank.
      It was a fail.
So the original plan of FH in a blank is tried and trusted

The interesting thing about these chips is they are still pretty new - we probably need about 20 seasons worth of data to do proper analysis rather than the 1 or 2 we have. Will be interesting to see how different this season is to last season with this sort of thing.

Go back and look at the timing of the blanks last season. The big BGW 35 was sandwiched btwn 2 DGWs rather than before both of them like in this season.

For me it's all very clear; TBD after GW27... Two options: (a) If I have lost my current 13k rating, I will WC at GW28 (in full knolwedge of all blanks and DGWs) and making a strategy to cover both... (b) if I have improved my ranking and am comfortable in the top 10k, then I will WC at the first week after the last blank and before the last DGW... The former would be an 11 and the latter a 6 GW WC... The rest of the chips should be decided on the fixtures and each team's squad, thourh a FH is surely due only in the largest of blanks, so possibly GW31...

    14. The Rumour Mill

      Considering 2 options at present:

      1) FH 32 WC 34 BB/TC 35
      2) WC 32 FH 33 BB/TC 35

I think Option 1 is best deployed if the teams with fixtures in blanks 31 and 33 are broadly similar. By free hitting in DGW 32 you "boomerang" your non blanking players from 31 back into your 33 team, when they will be required again. I think Option 2 is best deployed if a lot of sides blanking in GW31 do not blank in 33, especially if they are from the big 6. I've noticed that in GW31 there really aren't any standout ties for members of the big 6, barring Liverpool's with Fulham, which we know already will be a non blank anyway. Chelsea have to go to Everton, the manchester sides play each other, Spurs have an awkward match with Palace and Arsenal are at defensively solid Wolves. However in GW33, Chelsea are at home to West Ham, City home to Cardiff, Spurs are home to Brighton, and Liverpool at Southampton. Theres quite a lot of potential here.

Through the course of writing this I've realised another factor, If indeed a side (but particularly one or more of Chelsea, City, Spurs) have a blank 31 but a fixture in 33, they will potentially have a dgw 32 followed by a lovely fixture in 33, meaning you may not wish to be using your free hit in 33 as you'll be wanting the same players in 32 and 33 anyway.... its food for thought anyway, and something to keep in mind.

The problems with these strategies are of course that there are more chips than doubles. I think this will solve itself with a third (and possibly forth) DGW being announced somewhere. I shall most likely use the TC this week as it requires little planning compared to the Bench Boost.

Patricio on the other hand is less likely for the save points, more about whether I think he might get a clean sheet, Leicester are decent away from home so I'm not convinced on that.
