FPL Question Time – How to make gains amid Salah popularity

Fantasy Premier League managers are currently wondering the best way to edge past their rivals when Mohamed Salah (£13.5m) has dominated the captaincy debate.

We’ve put that question to a former winner to get his thoughts, whilst also considering the upcoming Blank and Double Gameweeks, which specifically involve what to do with Manchester City assets.

Read on to see what our panel has said this week…

Who’s on the panel this week?

Simon March – One of the select group of FPL managers to have finished first in the world, Simon topped the overall rankings in 2014/15.

Dr Ben McNair – Based in Australia, Ben has four finishes inside the top 5,000 to his name and is an expert in all things metrics-related.

Josh and Brandon from Always Cheating – Josh and Brandon are the brains behind popular American-based FPL podcast, ‘Always Cheating’.

Question 1 – Simon

FPL Virgin: With every man and his dog captaining Salah, how do we get an edge in the final third of the season?

Simon: “If everybody really is captaining Salah, then this, itself, creates an opportunity to make gains by ‘simply’ selecting alternative captains.

“There is an argument for trying this, for example, Liverpool have a decent fixture this week, but Arsenal, Manchester United and Spurs have arguably better ones and fair few captaincy options among them.

“Captaining a player from one of these sides could really pay off if they do manage to outscore Salah and judicious use of this strategy throughout the season could make a big difference should things go your way.

“That said, it’s a high-risk strategy and it is at least questionable whether the potential reward really justifies it, particularly because the risk of falling behind also gets bigger the larger the number of people who captain Salah and the greater his returns.

“The more sensible strategy is, probably, more incremental in nature. Captain Salah when it makes sense to do so and focus on gaining the advantage from the rest of your team.

“I do believe in being bold with captaincy choices when there’s a standout opportunity but, ultimately, captaincy feels like it should be the last place that Fantasy managers should be taking risks.

“Also, captaincy risks right now might be unnecessary with so many different dynamics yet to come into play this season, not least being the Double gameweeks which, we know, Salah, himself, will not have.

“Salah might look like he has a firm grip on the captaincy right now but, as we know, things can change very quickly in FPL.

“Over a season, the best differential is consistency and, sometimes, this means being patient and taking small, informed risks over time, not forcing the big (bad) ones. Let other people take those.”

Question 2 – Ben

Pascal Cygan: With planning for Blank Gameweeks (Gameweek 27 particularly) in mind, is it now too late to think about bringing Man City players back in if you don’t already have them?

Ben: “Not necessarily, provided you wait until after the weekend. Your strategy for navigating the risks of Blank and Double gameweeks is an important input to the decision.

Those that haven’t turned their minds to this yet, should check out Ben Crellin on Twitter.

A key part of your strategy should be making transfers as late as you can. By the Gameweek 24 deadline we will have learned whether Manchester City have a Double Gameweek 25, updated probabilities of their Blanks in Gameweek 31 and Gameweek 33, and a much better idea of how many players you might need to move out of your team by Gameweek 31.

“Imagine City get a Double in Gameweek 25 and Burnley knock them out of the FA Cup. That would change things considerably.

“However, don’t focus only on the Blank and Double Gameweek schedule. Last season I did so at the expense of focusing on form and it cost me points.

“I bought Sané last week and I don’t regret it yet. I’m not sure I could face having a second Manchester City player, though, with the Gameweek 27 Blank to be managed along with their inherent rotation risk.”

Question 3 – Josh

William Sutanto: Who is the best defender under £5.0m who isn’t Wan-Bissaka? It’s hard to find value in that position right now

“Here are two candidates to consider, both of whom were either injured or out-of-favor earlier this season which has kept them off most people’s radar

“The first is Sead Kolasinac at £4.9m and owned by only 4.0% of managers. He is locked into an Arsenal team and about to go on an extraordinary run of fixtures, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Southampton, and Bournemouth in four of their next five.

“The Gunners haven’t kept too many clean sheets this season (who has outside of Liverpool?) but he’s a naturally attacking full-back and has already picked up four assists on the season.

“Expect assists and/or clean sheets from Kola during his upcoming run.

“The other is Jan Bednarak and £3.9m, 5.6% ownership, and earning starts in the last eight matches for Southampton.

“After falling out of favor with Mark Hughes, the Polish international seems like a sure starter under Hasenhüttl, even more so with Wesley Hoedt sent away on loan this week. Only a late goal from Gylfi Sigurdsson prevented Southampton from keeping two clean sheets in their last three, sothere has definitely been some improvement at the back.

“He may not be a set-and-forget starter, but with Palace, Burnley, and Cardiff in Gameweeks 24to 26 you could reasonably make a case for starting Bednarak in any of those matches.

“At the very least he can save you a little bit of extra money compared to some of the other starting defenders under £5.0m.”

Question 4 – Brandon

Paul Roukey: When does it change from being patient (good FPL management) to being stubborn (bad FPL management) with respect to holding Hazard?

Brandon: “Since joining Chelsea in 2012, Hazard has come to define two distinct FPL clichés.

“The first is patience: a valuable FPL asset that is worth holding through thick and thin, knowing that at the end of the season they’ll undoubtedly be near the top of the stats page.

“The second cliché, of course, is the FPL troll: the player who you can’t resist, but will always let you down.

“A wise friend of the Always Cheating Podcast once said, ‘Getting Hazard into your FPL team is like switching checkout lanes at the grocery store, yet always finding yourself in the slowest one.’

“I currently have Hazard in my side and this is my second spell with him this season. My first spell was a lot more fun, playing Hazard Gameweek 5 to Gameweek 10, a window in which he posted five goals and one assist (including a hat trick in Gameweek 5).

“That’s an average of eight points per Gameweek. Not bad. In that sample size of six matches, half were blanks and he didn’t even appear in Gameweek 10.

“So, my takeaway from this first run is that Hazard’s appeal is his explosive nature, rather than his consistency.

“More recently, I brought Hazard in for Gameweek 20, and I’m still holding him ahead of the Gameweek 24 match away at the Vitality Stadium.

“Only four matches of data to look at this time around, but Hazard has managed just one attacking return. An assist—since Gameweek 20, which is supremely frustrating. Even more galling is that Chelsea haven’t come up with a penalty call since Gameweek 19.

“The hope is that Hazard can deliver one or two explosive performances in the next few matches—ahead of a possible Gameweek 27 blank, which would surely coincide with a massive fire sale.

“But, against Arsenal especially, Chelsea’s attack has looked stifled and uninspired. And Gameweek 26 offers a brutal match-up with Manchester City.

“Where will this supposed explosion come from? Seemingly out of nowhere? During that original window of my ownership, Hazard boasted 17 goal attempts and five big chances. Over the last four matches, he’s managed just eight attempts on goal with a very worrying zero big chances.

“It feels like it’s time to sell Hazard, even with two good fixtures upcoming (Bournemouth and Huddersfield), especially if you can target in-form players like Sterling, Sane, and Pogba.

“To now choose Hazard over City midfield coverage, in particular, is a calculated risk.

“So what is your FPL management style? Are you a risk taker? Are you, as Joe might say, a dullard?

“To answer the specific question above: Heading into Gameweek 24, what you do with Hazard is less about being a good or bad FPL manager.

“Rather, it’s about whether you manage with low or high risk. With that said, if we experience two more blanks over the next two Gameweeks, then we definitely have to revisit this as a very stark, very bleak good/bad management question.”

Since I put the work in, I'll post on it's own thread if you're interested. I have no angle here, just putting the information out there.

As a midfielder, Salah has scored 16pts more from goal points than if he were a forward.

As a forward, Salah would have got 7 extra bonus points from goals scored.

Therefore, as a midfielder, he has scored 9 extra points from goals scored so far this season (of 16 goals).

So his goals have been worth +0.56 per goals as a midfielder this season, as opposed to if he were a forward (compare to the common statement that goals are worth 1.00 extra each as a midfielder). [I actually think this is quite low, and the average forward extra bonus points is a bit higher than 0.43 per goal (as Salah's is) but can't back that up.]

So of his 177 points, a total of 22 points came from his classification as a midfielder. 13pts from CSs and 9 extra points from goals.

      Working's out:
Gameweeks / number of goals / extra bonus if he were a forward:

      1 / 1 / +0
      3 / 1 / +2
      6 / 1 / +1
      9 / 1 / +3
      10 / 1 / 0
      12 / 1 / 0
      13 / 1 / 0
      16 / 3 / 0
      18 / 1 / +1
      19 / 1 / 0
      20 / 1 / 0
      22 / 1 / 0
      23 / 2 / 0

Nothing really. Just interesting to start looking at the extra points potentially available as a result of classifications. As a midfielder:

        Each clean sheet = +1pt
        Each goal = + 0.56pts

Though I suspect the 0.56 number would be a little lower with a larger sample size. Perhaps I'll look into it at the end of the season.

Yet this sort of comparison is really useful when players get reclassified. It happened with Firmino and could easily with Salah.

So essentially we are all going to be asking whether he is worth it as a 13m forward next season once again

Yep. I hope they don't reduce his price when they reclassify him. 180% EO and rising in the top 10k suggests that 13m as a forward should be the minimum. Long way to go though, and things could change.

If he can get around 260 points as a forward, i think he just shades it. Factoring in captaincy of course especially against smaller teams at home. He rarely seems to blank in that situation. Assuming he misses 2 or 3 games, that equates to about 7.42 ppg

I was thinking the same. I'm guessing he'll be classified as a striker next year priced @ 13.0 minimum or 13.5 which I think he'll be priced at. I don't think they can classify him.as midfielder next year seeing Klop has been playing him up front for most of the season. Me personally I wouldn't want him next year as a striker at that price even though I have him this year and he's done me proud. Business is business.

I dont agree with this logic. His ownership should have nothing to do with how he's priced next season.

IF he gets reclassified, and IF he starts the season at 12.5, it would be a travesty.

a part of the "problem" with FPL the last couple of seasons, have been the pricing of strikers. All most all assets gets "overpriced". A 13m Salah (striker) would make him the same kind of pick that Kane is. I other words a player thats far less valuable than the counterparts in midfield.

Based on your observations on Salah this season, He would get approximately 250pts in a 38gm season as a striker. that would mean that theres a bunch of mids, a lot cheaper, that can potentially offer close to the same amount of pts (200-250)

Here's how I would price todays strikers + Salah if the aim was to balance the game and give managers more ways to play the game.

            Salah: 11.5
            Kane: 11.0
            Auba: 10.5
            Aguero: 10.5
            Lukaku: 9.0
            Jesus: 8.5
            Firmino: 8.5
            Laca: 8.5
            Rashford: 8.0
            Vardy: 7.5
            Giroud: 6.5
            Morata: 4.5

            1. Mysterion
              • 6 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

For me this is what their prices would look like in an ideal world where FPL are able to price every player in the game to near perfection. But since they can't possibly foresee how many high value, long-term enablers could emerge in any given season - this season's had more than it's fair share with the likes of AWB, Doherty, Fraser, etc. - they tend to overprice the big guns and most captainable players by 1.5-2.0 to make the game more of a challenge...

I think Salah as a 11.5 fwd next season would be so highly owned that the net result for most people would actually be less ways to play the game, it would just turn into a game of Salah + best way to spend 88.5 on the other 14 slots. His raw points will always be far less valuable than most others but why should that matter if he's going to be captained more often than not while he's in your team?

            2. Deulofail
              • 8 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

Salah's ownership would be 80-100% in GW1. Hardly giving us more ways to play the game. I can see the logic about the reduction in points, but I don't know why that means they shouldn't take ownership into acount. Ownership is the thing that actually determines how many ways the general players sees to play the game as viable.

I think we need to see how many points he gets this season first. But if it's the same as last year or more, I don't think a reduction is necessary, especially with him likely to take more penalties next season with Milner getting even fewer minutes (if that's even relevant next season).

Given that there are fewer options to switch between in the forward positions, a low price would encourage people to stick with Salah for the whole season imo. At the end of the day, they are looking for attacking returns, and Salah could again be the likeliest to get the mostest! You've got to give them better options. E.g. I do think you've priced Morata a little too high.

              1. WesMantooth

But if they price some players "wrong" because of fear of high ownership, then that will only lead people to own the players that are not that "wrongly priced" (their counterparts in midfield".

The idea that Salah (striker) has to be 13+ because premium strikers traditionally come in at 11, and the very best and most stable one the last couple of years, Kane, is 12.5 is fundamentally flawed.

It might reduce Salah's ownership, but it wont bring more ways to play the game. For every player that is wrongly priced, their will be limits for how to play the game. For everyone thats priced correctly, there will be more options.

Hmm nobody said he should be 13+ because premium strikers are traditionally 11m, nor because Kane is 12.5m.

A higher price than you're willing to pay would stop you buying Salah, but not everyone would value him the same as you. That's why a consideration of ownership is important. Sounds like you're trying to value him at a price that you would be happy to pay, which incidentally sounds like a price that almost literally everybody would be willing to pay for almost the entirety of the 38 gameweeks. Ownership is a reflection of "ways to play the game".

That’s only 0.5m more than Kane, if he beats him to the golden boot again (more than likely), he’ll be worth that at least. Especially when you factor in Salah gets more assists

whatever you do, wait until all the cup games are over !! I will eat a price drop if I have to, but hopefully the owners that brought him in last week are smart enough to wait for more news before doing a transfer to replace him !!!

I am likely going to go Moura myself if he is fit, as I recon he'll play as a striker and at least he has Eriksen to pass to him still.

Going Alli, Niasse to Jimenez, Fanderson/Lucas Moura(if Chelsea win).
    Does that sound good?

Plan was to go power 5 in midfield and maybe rotate him with ings. Also played gw27. However the same applies for Jimenez and he is a better option

Yeah i suppose. Niasse could be a decent option after this week but my intention was to play 5 in midfield and as a starter, he doesn't seem worth it. I'll be very interested in Moura though if Chelsea knock them out

Best option out of these two :

    Hazard Jota Lacazette

Son (but would need to use Wan Bissaka until he's back) Jota Auba

So to summarise, is it worth losing Hazard to get Auba instead of Laca? The only factor that worries me is a possible DGW for Chelsea. And how nailed is Laca?

    1. Eytexi
      • 5 Years

wouldnt touch laca myself. maybe the first one but with firmino if you don't have your heart set on an arsenal forward?

My current setup is Hazard Richa Alli Pogba Salah with Firmino Ings and Rashford up front.

Fed up of Hazard and Rich, but need to lose Alli now and Hazard is the only one that allows for Auba up front.

With Arsenal's fixtures, I feel I need one of Laca or Auba especially with Cardiff (h) next

Narrowed it down to three potential replacements for Alli:
    A) Sigurdsson (Best player but has a blank in GW27)
    B) Jota (Probably the safest pick but I already have Jim and Pat)
    C) Townsend (The ultimate differential who will probably average about 3 pts a game but still intrigues me)

Any ideas on how to help me choose?

Damn. Too early for me to think about DGWs. Hoping for a few shocks in the 4th Round to really reduce the number of PL teams left in the competition. 7 already gone and another 4 at least gone in Round 4. If a few more could go this weekend (e.g. Brighton and West Ham who have trickier ties) that would be sweet.

I’m waiting to see if Moura starts vs Chelsea. Eriksen will provide great balls for anyone and as we saw at the start of the season Moura loves making lovey runs. It’s all a bit up in the air right now but I think Eriksen & Moura will profit from Kane & Allis absense and of course Son until he’s back

If he’s on the pitch he will. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Moura directly replace him. It’s all a bit up in the air right now though, wouldn’t make a move for any of them just yet.

                  • 9 Years

I’m not sure about if he’s played false nine or not but if memory serves when him & Harry were on the pitch together at the start of the season he tended to be the more advanced player a lot of the time. I very easily could be wrong on this, might go look at the heatmaps and see actually.

More than anything I just really don’t think Llorente is currently good enough for their starting 11. There’s a very good reason he sees basically no minutes for Spurs in any competition every year. He’ll be back to seeing no minutes as quick as Poch can manage IMO.
