Captains

Captain Sensible – Salah the favourite for Gameweek 24

Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) looks to be the main captain candidate considered for Gameweek 24.

However, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs properly if we didn’t assess any potential alternatives to the Egyptian for the upcoming midweek Fantasy Premier League action.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we’ll be analysing each player in the debate, as well as the prospects of their club and their opposition…

Captain Poll

Not surprisingly, Salah leads the captain poll for a second week running ahead of Leicester’s trip to Anfield. The 45% support for the Egyptian comes from two places, the key one being his form, with six double-figure hauls in his last eight matches. The fact that the Foxes’ out-of-sorts defence shipped four goals at Wolves in Gameweek 23 is also likely to be a huge contributing factor.

Salah’s lead is not quite as large as it was for the last round of FPL action, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) sits in second place with a 20% share. The Arsenal man does present a compelling alternative to the Liverpool man as Cardiff come to the Emirates Stadium with the second-worst record on the road in the Premier League. In three away matches against top-six opposition this season, the Bluebirds have zero points with an aggregate score of 9-2. They look the perfect opponents for Aubameyang to continue his excellent home form, with goal involvements in four of his last five league matches at the Emirates.

Our voters may have cottoned onto the fact that Burnley are slowly making improvements, and are starting to represent tougher opposition than they did earlier in the campaign. Manchester United pair Paul Pogba (£8.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) sit third and fourth in the poll but with just 7% and 5% shares respectively, despite their blistering recent form. The two players have scored 108 FPL points between them since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford.

At 3% backing in fifth place, Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) looks like he’s being considered by some as an alternative to Aubameyang with Cardiff coming to north London.

Despite a little uncertainty over his likeliness of starts, Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) is the most popular Manchester City player in the Gameweek 24 captain poll, with 2.5% of the votes ahead of a trip to Newcastle. That may be because of his excellent scoring record against the Magpies, finding the net nine times in his last five Premier League matches against them.

The Argentinian forward sits ahead of Leroy Sané (£9.7m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) who are on 2.12% and 1.37% respectively. Neither one of them got any minutes against Burton Albion or Burnley so they look the most likely to start at St James’ Park.

Sandwiched among the Manchester City assets is Eden Hazard (£11.0m), who has a 2.37% share of the votes. That’s ahead of a trip to Bournemouth, who have averaged 1.42 goal conceded per home match in 2018/19. The Belgian’s brand new strike partner Gonzalo Higuain (£9.5m) has entered the debate too with 1.31%, just a little ahead of Diogo Jota (£6.0m) on 1.25%.

Current rank: 10.3K; Still in the cup...Is captaining anyone else than Salah playing with fire? I have Auba and feel a big haul incoming.

10.3k is a pretty good rank but if you want to go even higher, captaining Auba is a great way to potentially do it. However, I would be too scared to do it bc of the serious damage Mo could do.

Cardiff... Auba will probably have a good game although he has been rubbish the last few games. Salah is the ‘safe’ option but if I had Auba I would play him as captain, especially if you are playing catch-up....

To have or not to have...
Stuck with Jesus in my team. Double fixtures coming up in Gameweek 25.
Should I gamble in keeping him or will he most likely be benched for Aguero?

If getting rid.. Who should I bring in?

Have enough money to bring in Aguero, but the midfield miss out on Pogba who I would like to Add to the team.

    Cheers

Not sure how one would get that proof? But with Emerson starting the more important game and Alonso the less important, also giving the former more rest before the midweek games, I'd give him a slightly higher chance of starting than Alonso. Emerson also played well in his game for what it's worth

Suddenly I've plenty of problems in my team:

    Fabianski, Speroni
    Doherty, Digne, Robertson, Wan-Bissaka, Alonso
Pogba, Hazard, Salah, Felipe Anderson, Richarlison
    Quaner, Rashford, Kamara

I've got 5.1itb and a FT, most obvious option seems to me
    a) Kamara > Firmino
    or
    b) Kamara > Jimenez, to leave some funds for a city mid or Son

Or would you be looking at a hit for a City mid?

City have 4 fixtures from tomorrow to Sunday week (new ARS eve CHE).

I know it's hard to read Pep but surely it makes sense to play Jesus in the new & Eve games and play Kun in the two home games.....which effectively would take out either as aDGW option.

I think Ederson and one of Sane/Sterling is the way to go and keep Pogba and Salah. If you can manage both S and S then go for it. I Defo can't.

    Love DGWs tho 🙂

Just for the next 2 fixtures alone they are very good options, Newcastle sit in 16th and Arsenal's defence has been decimated by injury. That Arsenal fixtures comes with the possibility of some bonus minutes against Everton too! Wouldn't be taking hits to get players in, but certainly don't see why anyone would avoid them.

That's fair. He has plenty of great fixtures until the end of the season. The problem for me is those great fixtures flip flop with games against the Top 6 & a blank for the rest of the season. The DGW gave me a headache, was planning to drop Siggy this week but will hold onto him simply because of the DGW. Trap waiting to happen!

"there does appear to be more about Leicester than their woeful defensive display against Wolves suggests. While it was diabolical in parts, one could argue that their decision to push forward was a reason why they were so soundly ripped apart on the counter. In light of that result, Claude Puel is more likely to set his side up in a more defensive formation at Anfield, and the data discussed above shows that their performance at Molineux was not necessarily typical of his Leicester side on the road."

I have had Richarlison in my team the whole season and not sure if that will influence my decissions. I would like to get Son in early if he is fit and I'm looking at this move:

Richarlison and Anderson -> Sane and Son

    a. do the move (if positive news regarding Son from Tottenham before the game)
    b. just do Anderson -> Sane and give Richarlison his chance in dg25

    Speroni
    Robertson, Digne, Doherty
    Pogba, Salah, Hazard, Richarlison, Anderson
    Rashford, Jimenez

    Foster, Bednarek, Kamara, Peltier
    5.4 million in the bank

Arnie. Likely to play up front given the shambles that Carroll and Hernandez put on in the FA Cup and Perez is out injured.
