Captains

Captain Sensible – Salah, Aguero and Aubameyang compete for armband

Fantasy Premier League managers are faced with a much easier captaincy decision for Gameweek 28 compared to last week.

With Manchester City and Chelsea now back in action, Arsenal’s starting XI easier to predict and Liverpool facing more favourable opposition, there are considerably more clear cut options.

As per usual, we have assessed the key candidates from the poll for their own statistical performance of late, cross-comparing how their teams and opposition have done over the same period.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) has shaken off some early competition from Sergio Aguero (£11.6m) to pull away in the latest captain poll. Ahead of Watford’s visit to Anfield, the Liverpool man has garnered the support of 40% of the vote. That is hardly surprising considering Salah’s scoring record against Watford, having found the net six times in three Premier League matches. The Egyptian has also blanked at home just once since Gameweek 19.

Currently occupying second place in the poll is Manchester City striker Aguero. After running Salah close in the early hours of the vote, is now backed by just 18%. The case for the Argentinian is easy to understand after back-to-back home hat-tricks in Gameweeks 26 and 27, ahead of West Ham’s visit to the Etihad Stadium. What may be putting Fantasy managers off is his 120-minute outing for the Citizens in Sunday’s League Cup final.

A benching for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) in Gameweek 27 has certainly put the masses off the Arsenal striker for the midweek visit of Bournemouth to the Emirates Stadium. At the time of writing, he has the backing of just 15%, despite the fact that he has scored or assisted in every home match he has started against sides outside the top six since Gameweek 12.

A tenth Premier League goal of the season for Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m) at the Vitality Stadium has helped him to become the best of the rest in the Gameweek 28 captain poll. The Wolves forward has the backing of 5% ahead of a trip to Huddersfield.

Richarlison (£6.6m) makes a surprise appearance in the top five despite his recent disappointment for Fantasy managers. 2.65% of our voters believe handing the captain armband to the Everton man for a trip to Cardiff could pay dividends. That may well be influenced by the 5-1 drubbing Watford handed out at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday evening.

Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) is another Manchester City option suffering in the captain poll as a result of the League Cup final. The England international also played 120 minutes on Sunday which could jeopardise his chances of starting against West Ham. For that reason, he is currently only seen as the best captain for Gameweek 28 by 2.38% of our voters.

He is marginally ahead of Paul Pogba (£8.8m) this week as a stricken Manchester United side prepare to travel to Crystal Palace. The Frenchman played a slightly deeper role against Liverpool, with Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) missing out, and the concern over that has been borne out in just 2.34% backing in the poll.

Alexander Lacazette (£9.5m) is still around to play a part in the captain conversation after missing Thursday night’s Europa League action through suspension and scoring against Southampton. 2.3% of our voters believe he is the best candidate ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to north London.

Leroy Sané‘s (£9.5m) lack of heavy involvement in the League Cup final makes him one of the most likely starters for Manchester City on Wednesday night, hence why he has managed to get a place in the top 10 of the poll. 1.6% are brave enough to call on him for the armband, just ahead of Harry Kane (£12.4m) who has the backing of 1.2% ahead of a trip to Chelsea and Stamford Bridge.

I'm also considering that Liverpool away is as close to a dead fixture as you'll get and that's one of Barnes's upcoming games. Rondon plays Everton at home that week.

Would you do this -4 hit (have 2ft's)
Anderson, Rashford, Ings out - Hayden, Aguero, Rondon in

        Current team before transfers
        Patricio, Fabs
        Robertson, Shaw, Doherty, Kolasinac, AWB
Salah (c), Sterling, Pogba, Son, Anderson
        Rashford, Jimenez, Ings

Note I will play my free hit chip gw31
I can always just do Ings to Rondon & roll my ft & get Aguero gw29 but just in case he does play this gw I'm prepared to take the risk & even if he's rested I have substitutes that can come in for him.

        Thoughts & thanks.

I went rash to Rondon. Rondon got great form and fixtures, Barnes faces defensively more stable teams. Vardy could go either way with a new coach which makes Leicester as a whole pretty uncertain.

depends wether all is ruled out and your bench. -8 is ok if subs are non playing or certain 2 pointer like Puncheon. I don´t see any reaon to buy Vardy at 8.8 when you can buy as good strikers in almost the same level of clubs to under 6m.

sorry for late answer but i would be tempted to do it as Rash is the only one that can really hurt you. Southampton will concede and Westwood max 1 assist and you get prepped for 31.

Is the hudds game skewing rondon stats somewhat and in the decision between rondon and Barnes, is it quite simply Barnes?

Better xg and stats over the last four which have included Utd and Spurs.

Is receny bias in play for those choosing Rondon?

I’m on the fence so interested to know who and why for your rash replacement

Wouldn't upcoming run of fixtures be a big plus for Rondon over Barnes?

If Watford beat Palace at home (likely enough) Rondon also plays GW 33

I agree, rondon fixtures are better but I just feel Newcastle looked good vs a very poor hudds side but in reality, have only scored more than 2 goals once this season. Granted Burnley haven’t score much more but I just feel they are clicking on the eye test. Barnes on pens over Rondon

            I don’t think so.

Only twice has he not returned in a game against non-top6 since GW15 - one of which was Wolves (a) which is by no means easy.

He now only has 2 matches v top6 remaining and actually makes him hereon a decent option.

                I went for Rondon.

Neither Newcastle nor Burnley are ideal to own players from, but given a short term view of things Rondon is a good option to navigate the blank.

Lack of alternatives, decent fixtures, decent price, good form.

Similar could be said for Barnes, but I believe their fixtures are somewhat tougher.

          Those with Auba, are you:

          a) holding
          b) transferring to Aguero (obvious risk)

Yeah over Salah, Liverpool haven’t been clicking and this Watford side is better drilled than the one he scored 4 against last year

If I owned him and had no other fires to put out, I’d probably sell.

I think I may double down and captain Auba as a parting gift. Aguero mins are putting me off to transfer him for this week. Salah looked lack luster. (c) Auba (vc) Salah

Salah has been poor in big games this season. But he is top scorer and had bullied lesser teams this year.

Which is more likely for Salah:
            A) An average 5-7 point performance as Liverpool continue to be mediocre and scrape a 2-1 win on Watford
            B) Bounce back with a hattrick and punish the non-believers

Surely you would expect Aguero to play. No Fernandinho and perhaps Sterling (wasn't seen on CityTv as far as I'm aware) so can't afford another player of their spine to not play considering they're in an immense title battle.

Lerma out aswell against City so he could play in that regardless then a good fixture against Watford.
