Please help me out.Been out of touch in fantasy and falling down the ranking fast. Used my FT earlier and the team and still got my WC, TC and BB left. What is a sound strategy to deploy all the chips? I will just use my FT this week to field maybe 10 players, and aim to WC next week.

I've listened to / watched several podcasts / videos this week in my time off and I think some of the advice I've heard is just wrong. Got a little frustrated with it so to fix here's my "Correcting Bad Advice for GW31" thoughts.

1. “8/9 PLAYERS ARE ENOUGH, DON’T TAKE FURTHER HITS BEYOND THIS”

FPL is purely about points. You should take as many hits as possible where they have positive expectation.

Denying yourself an additional hit when your desired transfer in is expected to get 5 points this week is a mistake.

2. IT’S A -2 / – 0 IN POINTS BECAUSE THE OTHER DUDE WONT PLAY IN GW31 / 33”.

Every hit is a -4. Working on a 2-point basis is weird (I would say wrong). Firstly, *losing* 2 points is not great. The objective is to gain points. You should instead work on maximising expected points.

If a player is expected to get 3 points total this is a bad transfer. If he’s predicted 6 it would be good. The individual player is everything.

Bringing in a player who plays both GW31+33 compared to nothing *does* cover the downside but not always.

You have an addition 2 free transfers (1 if FH32) where you can bring in another player. If you end up with >11 for GW33 then the second week is measured against the gain / loss of the bench player, not compared to zero.

3. “GET ARNAUTOVIC NOT WILSON / DIFFERENTIALS ARE GREAT”

No, maximise points. When we focus on points, we *don’t care* if someone is a differential or not. You care about the underlying stats and expectation.

Arnautovic hasn’t been starting, his point expectation will be lower because we have to factor in the possibility that he won’t start / play as many minutes.

He is an *extra* bad option this week unless you have more than 11 players because you compromise the expected minutes played over your team.

4. “KEEPING VALUE IS NOT IMPORTANT AT THIS STAGE OF THE SEASON”

This is true only if you don’t want that same player back in. It would cost me £0.5m to bring any of Pogba, Rashford or Doherty back into my team after removing them.

If I want these players later on (which I do), I don’t want to compromise the rest of my team by having to afford inflated prices at a later stage.

The degree to which you mitigate this is up to you, but you should have a quick look at your WC34 team and see how much value you can give up before you hit your inflection point.
