As we build towards Gameweek 31, our Watchlist rankings have enjoyed their usual weekly refresh and can now be viewed in the right sidebar.

This week is notable for movement in the Newcastle and Everton ranks – both providing key assets to accompany the heavyweights in our squad. While the Magpies’ back four takes a dent with the injury to Fabricio Coloccini, their attacking potential leaps with the form on display in the win at West Brom. Everton, meanwhile, appear to offer options at both ends of the field as a Fantasy mainstay, as a new arrival make claims for investment…

Goalkeepers

The goalkeeping position remains problematic with Michel Vorm holding the top spot by default – with little or no opposition emerging. The combination with second placed Asmir Begovic looks a good ploy, although the Stoke keeper potentially lost his Gameweek 34 fixture with Everton due to the Toffees’ FA Cup progress last night.

Brad Friedel is the most significant climber in our rankings – providing an alternative route to the Spurs back four for potential defensive returns. Again, Begovic works well in rotation here, although both currently miss Gameweek 34.

Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny and Everton’s Tim Howard are both mid-price climbers who afford a way into the Arsenal and Everton defences respectively, although there are arguably better alternatives available within either sides’ back fours.

Defenders

Jonny Evans has surely reached essential status, having returned his third consecutive clean sheet, in addition to a goal and assist in the last two Gameweeks.

In contrast to the value offered by Evans, Everton’s Leighton Baines is an expensive proposition but nonetheless an asset with form and the potential to fetch double figure returns. The Toffees’ defensive resolve has been proven in recent weeks with three clean sheets in six, while Baines’ goal at Swansea was his fourth of the season and offered a reminder as to his attacking worth. With around 7% ownership, Baines is a differential who could really make a “difference” should he fulfill potential over the forthcoming run of obliging fixtures.

Third placed Thomas Vermaelen sits in the same bracket as Baines – another costly defensive asset with attacking potential in his locker. One or both of these players will likely restrict investment elsewhere but the duo have the ability to return profit at either end of the field.

Lower down the rankings we see climbs for Stoke’s Andy Wilkinson, with the Potters now facing up to a decent run of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. Chelsea’s Gary Cahill is another viable option who sneaks up the rankings, while Tottenham’s Benoit Assou-Ekotto has the fixtures to earn him renewed interest.

Swansea’s Steve Caulker takes a dip due to his absence from the weekend fixture with Spurs, while Newcastle’s defensive assets continue to slide. Danny Simpson is in decline, with question marks over Alan Pardew’s backline as the Magpies go into the home clash with Liverpool without the influence of the injured Coloccini. Ryan Taylor could return to balance defensive frailty with attacking potential – his start at the weekend is still uncertain, however.

Midfielders

Gareth Bale’s strike in Tottenham’s FA Cup win over Bolton provided a timely reminder of his goal threat. We keep the faith with the Welshman on top of our the midfield rankings, then – we’ll be breaking down the reasons why in a Members Monitor article later this week.

Antonio Valencia’s form, value and fixtures push him into second spot – the United man is starting to look irresistible as an option for the third United spot, with Evans and Wayne Rooney filling the other positions. Valencia’s all-round game make him favourite to start on the right flank away from home, with Ashley Young and Nani set to compete for starts on the opposite flank.

Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson has the fixtures to reward his recent spurt of investment, while Theo Walcott continues to show consistent returns at the Emirates, pushing him up to fourth in our rankings. Returns on the road could see the Arsenal man progress further.

Fulham’s Clint Dempsey has the home clash with Norwich this weekend and will be expected to return profit accordingly. Should he fail, then the likes of Yaya Toure and Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa are challenging hard for the fifth midfielder slot. Sunderland’s James McClean is another player enjoying a revival – his stock climbed with a goal and assist return in the win over QPR, although the fixture list is against McClean and his Sunderland team-mates.

Forwards

The top two pairing of Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney look rock solid as their form is maintained, with favourable fixtures to come. Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse is now sitting in the third striker spot, having notched his fifth goal in six starts with a brace at the Hawthorns. Cisse has the blank in Gameweek 34 and, with Chelsea’s progress in the Champions League looking a possibility, there’s every chance that Newcastle’s clash with the Blues will be forced into a double Gameweek slot. That will be a short-term concern, although a possible double Gameweek will surely see investment rocket, should progress to the semi-finals on April 17/18 be confirmed.

Emmanuel Adebayor is the other major contender for the third striker spot – while his streaky form is a worry, the forthcoming fixtures grant him every opportunity to add to his 11 goals and 12 assists tally, as Spurs look to revive their challenge for a third place finish. They also face a blank in Gameweek 34, although their league fixture at Bolton could easily slot into midweek and be restored.

Options below the top four in our rankings look more risky – Fulham’s Pavel Pogrebnyak has gone off the boil after an explosive start to his career at the Cottage, while West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie has stalled through recent injury. Both have decent short-term fixtures and remain viable as low-to-mid price options.

Everton’s Nikaca Jelavic is rapidly emerging as the most attractive alternative, however. His FA Cup goal at Sunderland was his third in Everton colours, providing more evidence that the Croatian has settled on Merseyside. With a modest price tag and obliging fixtures to come, Jelavic provides a tempting differential to sit alongside Rooney and Van Persie in our squads.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Cahill (Che) and Hibbert are definitely gone off my radar as both are clearly rotation risks, as are all the Chelsea defense bar Cashley.
I think Everton players are to be avoided as they'll be too distracted by their cup semi.
Presuming Chelsea get through against Benfica it means they'll definitely have no fixture in GW34, but will have a DW in either GW36 or 37.

Cahill has played 90 minutes in the last 5 premier league games. Everton being in the semi just shows how good their recent form is. A blank gw isn't that bad when you have subs and a gw soon after.

saw somewhere 9/2 for torres to score in the AVI match.

surely it is ridiculous odds, what a rip off.

He is 5/4 to score against Villa. 9/2 is to score first. Bookies ignore form to some extent and price up the position in the team rather than the player. Whether he plays or not is irrelevant to the price as he must be priced as a starter.

In the first goalscorer market, you get your money back if he doesn't play or if he comes on as sub with a goal already scored.
But if he comes on as sub when it's still 0-0 the bet is valid.

I'm always slightly suspicious about FPL decisions based on bookies' odds. Yes they make their money by being right - but being right for a bookie isn't about making predictions in a vacuum - if lots of people bet on a certain player (and people are irrational) they will shorten the odds on that player to cover themselves - hence you tend to get shorter goalscoring odds on well known players.

If I could get an opinion on these possibilities I’d be very appreciative…

    Team (linked) is as follows:

    Krul   Mig

    Jevans   Enrique   Caulker   Senderos   BAE

    Moses   Valencia   Bale   Dempsey   McClean

    RVP   Rooney  Ba

    4.0m in the bank.
    1 FT.

I was going to do Ba > Adebayor this week to tie in with Tottenham’s tasty run-in, but Adebayor is not thrilling me at the moment, plus I’m thinking of going Bale © so I don’t want too many eggs in the Tot basket.

So I’m thinking Senderos > Vermaelen instead, now it appears Senderos has understandably been dropped from the Fulham back line.

Or I could do both for -4, but I’m not generally a fan of hits (particularly as I have no need to take unnecessary risks at the moment), so I’d take some convincing to do this.

Or I could just do Senderos > Kelly to maintain my Fulham defensive cover and generate even more cash which will undoubtedly come in very handy later.

Or I’m open to any other suggestions.

Apologies for the long post and thanks in advance to anyone who can even be bothered to read it all let alone respond!  If nothing else, it has been useful for me to get my options down in words, so not all bad if everyone ignores me…

      Senderos > Vermaelen.
Adebayor is in bad form and has been for weeks now, his 21 pointer fooled everyone.
I wouldn't do Senderos > Kelly, I'm looking at ditching him (and therefore Fulham defence) altogether. I don't see them keeping many, if any, clean sheets between now and the end.

Nice post jack, where to start ...You've jevan/enri/bae most weeks to start, caulker is sufficient down send>Kelly and consider one of Cahill/verm/baines maybe for enri.
You mf looks decent just keep an eye on wally but you don't wanna get yourself a headache with bench/bench points.
IMO keep away from ade just to streaky for me personally, you could get /cisse/yak or similar or else get money from mentioned transfers to facilitate Tevez, I know it's out there but he does deliver , the q being does he need 3/4 games but you can't argue he's fantasy gold .
Bear in mind sundy are there for the taking I watched them last night and they looked like a team with too many miles on the clock this season, city 4-0....

I think VDV could be a decent differntial but taking Bale out for him is as you say "too sideways" especially considering that bale is guaranteed 90mins every game, whereas VDV even when fit tends to be rotated with Defoe/Saha on around the 60th min most games.

CL Group B: Matchday 6 Preview

Here we go then - finale of the group stages! Group B provided very few surprises, with the veteran manager GWM using his wisdom to ensure his team's qualification and JMS' Internazionale (who were seeded 3rd in the tourney) continuing their hot form into the tourney. The big surprise in this group were the performances of Lille, whose manager was considered somewhat of a dark horse at the start of the cup. CSKA's manager from Zambia (who was the 2nd top seed in the group) was clearly overwhelmed with the AFCON performance of her country and could never bring her down to aspire for her team's CL dreams.

For the record, here's how the group will be decided:
    1) Higher the points, higher the position.
    2) If 2 teams are tied on the same points, then it goes down to h2h record (win/loss)
    3) If the h2h record is the same, then it goes to Overall GD. If its still tied, then we go to away points scored in the matches between the tied teams.
    4) When 3 or more teams are tied on the same points, the Overall GD is taken into consideration.
    5) The group winner & runners-up qualify for the knock-outs and the 3rd spot qualifies for Round 2 of the Europa League.

It's crunch time and below are the qualification criteria for Group B:

Trabzonspor: Having already qualified for the knock-outs, they have a big chance to stay as group winners. If they are victorious over Lille, they easily take the leader position. Whereas if they lose to Lille and Inter loses to CSKA, they still emerge as group winners. They will be group runners-up only if they lose to Lille, Inter wins against CSKA and the Overall GD difference of (22-8=14) is made up in the process.

Inter: Currently placed 2nd in the group, a home win against CSKA will see them through to the knock-outs. In that scenario, they have a chance to be group winners only if Trabzonspor lose to Lille and the Overall GD difference of (22-8=14) is made up in the process. A Lille loss will also do enough to ensure an Inter qualification. However, if Lille wins against Trabzonspor, Inter loses to CSKA, it is likely that the marginal difference in GD of (8-5=3) will be made up in the process, which will ensure Lille takes 2nd place and Inter will have to contend with the Europa spot.

Lille: A must-win home match awaits Lille against the leader Trabzonspor. For qualification into the knockouts, the equation for Lille is straightforward. Win against Trabzonspor and hope for an Inter loss, which would ensure the overall GD of Lille is superior to Inter. Even if Lille loses, they would have another battle in the bottom of the table for the Europa spot. In that scenario, they will lose out on the Europa spot only if CSKA wins against Inter by a huge margin and in the process makes up for the huge difference in GD of around 40 points (for eg. CSKA wins by 25 points and Lille loses by 16 points).

CSKA: After having already been eliminated from the CL, a miraculous recovery in the last match can ensure a Europa spot. If that needs to happen, they will need to beat Inter on the road, hope that Lille loses at home to Inter and the GD of around (5 - -35) 40 points is made up in the process. Not entirely impossible, but the odds are against the Russian team.

    Predictions:

Inter vs CSKA - With both settled teams very likely to save their transfers, the clash could come down to Suarez vs Walcott. I fancy the home advantage and the attacking prowess of BAE to see Inter through in this game. Only marginally. But again, captaincy choices could make the difference.

Lille vs Trabzonspor - An easy home win for Lille is on the cards, with Trabzonspor still left with a few players not worthy of consideration this week including Given, Moses, Nani and Senderos. Could the manager possibly activate his Wildcard in a dead rubber for him? Lille would hope not.

There seems to be a mass clearout of Skrtel from many teams on here before this weeks game at Newcastle. Just a few things to note from my opinion.

    1. Liverpool have played shocking against some poor sides recently BUT seem to always 'up their game' against better opposition. This game is also very important for Liverpool if they have any chance of overtaking Newcastle in the league and finishing in the 6th spot and really is a must win if they are aiming to do so.

    2. Liverpool in general are still a solid defensive unit and have already recorded 10 cleansheets in the league this season.

    3. Liverpool are good at scoring from set pieces and with Sktrel's ariel goal threat against two second choice CB's in Williamson & Perch this game may give him a good opportunity to notch another goal.

I know alot of people are on the hate wagon for Liverpool defenders/players after the last couple of results, BUT it's something to consider.

TBH he is a good player but I don't think Liverpool's recent poor form/conceding is as much down to Agger not playing as people believe.

I'm sticking with my Liverpool defenders. If Agger comes back fit, it could be a different story.

But, I am chasing a lot of points and need to take some risks!

There is an argument to stick with them for now but there is also good reason for people to get rid after some very dodgy results and them not looking very convincing at this point in the season. Also there are much better alternatives to Skrtel and Enrique in those price brackets. I along with a few others got them in for the DGW with the added bonus was favourable fixtures @ QPR and (h) to Wigan. While the DGW brought some returns the following results confirmed that now is the time to bring in the more interesting defensive options out there.

wondered if you thought binning silva before SUN was a good idea? im tempted by Walcott, but seems the wrong time to do it? is Silva really finished for now?
(other option is Sorensen -> Bogdan - mainly so i dont have to play Mignolet vs. mci)

            I am fine with it.

I sold Dempsey last week, only wanted him in for his good run of fixtures. Fulham are too weak away imo, means that is half the fixtures that you aren't confident playing them, and then if they don't turn up at home (which happens) they aren;t really adding value. Newcastle, Arsenal players you can play any week.

Everton are hitting their stride after a few good results but tbh it's still a gamble with them (one I have embraced though, Baines and Jelavic for me!)
