While us Fantasy managers can send out our squads in the hope that logic and form will come good – one decision, one oversight, one moment of madness from an official can turn our hopes to dust. Back to black for Gameweek 31, we find three likely refereeing protagonists who could well have a major influence on events and Fantasy returns this weekend…

Mike Dean

Four penalties awarded in the last three league games, seven in the last nine, twelve in the last 18, the stats just keep on coming for our premier Fantasy official and, having cemented his place at the top of this particular Watchlist weeks ago, he’s certainly shown no signs of letting up since. This week, Dean will be picking up his stipend at Loftus Road as 26 goal Robin van Persie and his in-form Arsenal teammates rock up to taunt the faltering QPR faithful, and with the Dutchman currently topping the Captain’s Poll, we’ll certainly be hoping to see that familiar pose from Dean once again.

While penalties are always the order of the day with Dean in town, we also can’t pass up the QPR game without continuing the disciplinary theme from the recent Tightrope article. The blue and white hoops have more red marks than an inept paintballer and, with the quick feet of Theo Walcott on show, the chance of another beckons. It’s also worth noting that Dean has booked both Van Persie and Tightrope walker Laurent Koscielny in the last two Arsenal games he’s officiated (vs Spurs and United at the Emirates) so it may not all be plain sailing for the Gunners.

Martin Atkinson

The charms of the Yorkshire official are next under the spotlight as his appointment to the Sunday afternoon Newcastle vs Liverpool fixture throws us some interesting angles to highlight. Firstly, we have a Liverpool side – likely to be shorn of Daniel Agger in defence and desperately missing season long casualty Lucas in midfield – that have just conceded five goals to the sides sitting 18th and 19th in the table and who may well be up against the fluid attacking trident of Demba Ba, Papiss Cissé and Hatem Ben Arfa.

At the other end of the pitch, however, we have a Newcastle side likely to field a centre-back pairing of Mike Williamson and James Perch up against the guile of Steven Gerrard and Luis Suárez, and maybe even the brute force of the returning Andy Carroll. Two match-ups that ooze goals, then, and with the jostling elbows, flailing legs and maybe even the odd theatrical fall thrown in, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Atkinson add to either his meagre penalty total (4 in 23 games) or his field-leading red card tally (4 straight reds and 7 in total) in this encounter.

Jon Moss

Switching to the pressure cooker of the relegation battle between Wolves and Bolton, we find Jon Moss bringing his untouchable spot-kick strike rate of six penalties in eight matches into the equation. Last time he took charge of Wolves, against Everton back in Novemeber, he shared the spot-kick awards out, with each side awarded one apiece – it’s not unreasonable to expect the touchpaper to be lit at Molineux, with Moss emerging as a key figure, then. With an average of over three bookings a match, we’d also expect to see some cards flashed, particularly if Karl Henry makes his return for the home side.

I don't think so. I think it was just not needed. Or there were glaring errors. I didn't get a chance to read the whole thing but it was like posting a RVP yea or nay article right now. Everyone has him and probably not thinking of ditching at the moment.

Verm or Kompany for the long term expensive defensive option?

Verm leaves me with three Arsenal players and no City but Kompany has been the key to City clean sheets although not definite he'll start tomorrow and if not i'd probably bench him for the Arsenal game anyway

Looking at group K, there is no way Fulham can qualify. Isacki lost both matches to Alex, so even if he beats Dr. Ennet and Alex loses to Shistontrev they will still both be on 9 points, Alex’s H2H record will see him through

Since most of the discussions are focused on Gameweek 36 I thought i'd write up some possible strategy should certain teams make the FA Cup final.

    SPURS: BLA & bol
An easy GW35 match against qpr, two juicy fixtures in GW36, followed by a villa away and Fulham home in gw37 and 38 means it would appear to be a no brainer to recruit 3 Spurs players. However should they make the final on the 5th May it's highly likely Arry will get rotating for their Bolton match 3 days earlier on the 2nd. Then again, considering the fixtures, even if you knew they're 75% likely not to play Bolton you could still easily justify sticking with a full Spurs contingent from G35 onwards. Finishing in the top 4 will surely be their priority so they won't be making wholesale changes against Bolton unless they're beyond Chelsea's reach by then.

    CHELSEA: QPR & NEW
Fulham and Arsenal away in GW 35 and 36 mean your Chelsea players will have to be late editions before GW36. GW37 is a tricky match at Anfield while GW38 sees them at home to Blackburn who may still be fighting for premier league status.
Despite having probably the easiest DGW of anyone, they're probably the one team i'll try avoid altogether.
They're almost certainly going to qualify for the CL semi final, add an fa cup final to the mix and it would mean an aging team playing eight matches in 4 weeks.
    April 17/8, 21, 24/5, 29, May 2, 5, 9, 13.
RDM has already shon his willingness to rotate, even at the most unlikely times so it's almost impossible to predict which forward will start a given match. They also have 3 right backs and 4 decent centre backs. Even if they're not in the FA cup final it'll still be 7 matches in less than a month in a team prone to rotating. Probably being in the hunt for a CL place by then is another factor. Apart from Petr Cech it's a bit of a shot in the dark regarding Chelsea coverage

    LIVERPOOL: nor & FUL
Liverpool already have a Europa spot secured and since CL is beyond their means they're only playing for pride at this stage. Should they qualify for the FA Cup final they will face:
    Norwich a 28/4, Fulham H 1/5, FA Cup final v Spurs/Che 5/5, Chelsea H 9/5, Swansea a13/5
Although they have one of the cushier DGW fixtures, their last 2 league matches are far too tough to justify loading up on 2 or 3 of their players. You'd also expect several key players getting rested against Fulham, prior to the final.

...which would be great news for FULHAM. everton and liverpool away.
A blank in GW34 is followed by Wigan at home. You'd expect them to score 2 or 3 in that.
Their double GW follows and if they're up against a rested Pool side with Carragher, Coates, Spearing and Carroll etc you'd fancy their prospects, even away from home.
They finish the season with Sunderland H and Spurs a. My thinking is if you have Pogrebnyak or Dempsey it's worth saving one and benching for GW34.

    NEWCASTLE: wigan and chelsea away
Stoke home following their blank in GW34 looks okay. Then a mixed bag for their DGW, Like Fulham, they'd benefit from their GW36 opponent (in this case Chelsea) making the final since that would likely see some Chelsea rotation. Their final 2 GWs don't look very appealing at all - City at home followed by Everton away means you probably won't want any more than 2 Newcastle.

    Conclusions:
    - It's all ifs buts and maybes until we know which teams make the final. But we only find that out by April 15 (gw34) so until you do know you're best off just concentrating on fielding a decent XI that week.
    - Newcastle and Fulham will be unaffected so it's probably worth holding onto and benching someone like say Simpson or Pogrebnyak. Indeed it could work in these teams' favour if their second GW36 opponents rest key players.
    - Given that Chelsea and Spurs have the juiciest GW36 a smart move may be to invest in either Cech or Friedel.
    - I'm wildcarding before GW36 I don't need to worry about such things so screw the lot of ye 😀

Its not a no brainer to get three Spurs players in as the have no fixture in GW35 so if you want to take advantage of the run including the home game against Norwich you would have 3 Spurs players with no fixture in 35

He's in good form, started the last 3 league games and tends to score anytime he's started (especially at home). Could see him as a good differential. any thoughtsor alternatives??

[Long-time reader, first-time poster, so please excuse any breach of etiquette]
As an Australian trying to follow EPL without the aid of Pay TV, do the team sheets for each GW get announced before FPL cut-off (1130am GMT)?

In particular for this GW, I'm leaning towards GCahill over Gibbs for some defensive cover, but I'd like to be sure Cahill starts against Villa before I hit the transfer button.

    Thanks in advance

    Ruddy Bogdan

    Caulker Evans Simpson Shotton Kelly

    Rooney RVP Aguero

Thinking of making (-8) point hit to get:

    Morrison OUT Walcott IN
    Aguero OUT Cisse/Jelavic IN
    Shotton OUT Cahill IN

    Is it worth it?

Fellow posters....how do you change your name? I went to the "change personal details" section and entered a nick name but it hasn't worked.

I think you change your name, save it, then select the new name from the little drop-down list that says 'display name as' or something, and save it again.

Trouble at the back this week. Have Evans (bla) Enrique (new) and Turner (mci). Add to that an injured Lescott and out of favour Santon. Would you swap square head for Richards or Kaboul? I'd like to make more changes, but am loathe to for a hit.

    Hello,

    Boring question, vermalen or kompany?
I would take kompany, but if it happens that he's still out, that would be just stupid...

Sad news about Stiliyan Petrov, thoughts with him and all the folks at Villa. Hopefully this will be the last of the bad fortune that's hitting football right now.
