Liverpool to face Barca five days after GW36 match with Huddersfield

Following our write-up of Manchester City 4-3 Tottenham Hotspur earlier, we now turn our attention to Liverpool’s latest UEFA Champions League exploits.

The Reds coasted through to the semi-finals of the competition after a 6-1 aggregate win over Porto, with Jurgen Klopp’s side finishing the job in comprehensive fashion on Wednesday night.

The Merseyside club will now face Barcelona in the semi-finals, with the positive news for Fantasy owners – particularly for those who are considering using their Triple Captain chip on a Liverpool asset – being that the match in the Nou Camp will take place on Wednesday 1 May, a full five days after the Reds entertain Huddersfield Town in the league.

Rotation would by no means be a certainty in any event, what with Liverpool’s Premier League title push ongoing, but the extra day’s recovery adds a little more reassurance in that regard.

The Gameweek 37 trip to Newcastle, however, is the second of three games in the space of seven days.

Liverpool’s remaining schedule looks as follows:

Sunday 21 April: Gameweek 35 – Cardiff City (a)
Friday 26 April: Gameweek 36 – Huddersfield Town (h)
Weds 1 May: Barcelona (a)
Saturday 4 May: Gameweek 37 – Newcastle United (a)*
Tues 7 May: Barcelona (h)
Sunday 12 May: Gameweek 38 – Wolverhampton Wanderers (h)

*currently scheduled for Sunday 5 May but now almost certain to be brought forward by a day.

Porto 1-4 Liverpool

  • Goals: Sadio Mane (£10.1m), Mohamed Salah (£13.2m), Roberto Firmino (£9.3m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.6m)
  • Assists: Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.5m), Jordan Henderson (£5.3m), Sadio Mane

Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) and Sadio Mane (£10.1m) matched each other for attacking returns in Portugal on Wednesday, with each banking a goal and an assist in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Porto.

Mane turned in Salah’s chipped ball to put Liverpool 1-0 up (after VAR intervention) before the Senegalese winger set up Virgil van Dijk‘s (£6.6m) headed fourth by flicking on James Milner‘s (£5.6m) corner.

Yet again Salah dominated the shot count, registering seven of Liverpool’s 13 attempts on goal.

Mane, by contrast, only had three shots, although missed an absolute sitter when presented with an open goal late on.

The pair were at the centre of some interesting tactical tweaks by Jurgen Klopp.

Mane began the match at the centre of a front three, with Divock Origi (£5.0m) – playing instead of the benched Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) – patrolling the left flank.

Porto dominated for much of the first half, though, compelling the Liverpool boss to switch to a 4-4-1-1 at half-time with Salah up front and substitute Firmino tucked in just behind.

Mane switched to a more orthodox wing role, meanwhile, with Milner used on the right flank.

Klopp explained:

We tried to change the system a couple of times and finally, we changed at half-time, 4-4-1-1, and it helped because then we closed the centre better. We could keep them on one side and they couldn’t switch the sides like they did before with a lot of direction in the game.

We had to defend in the first half an hour a lot in the last third. That’s OK, it’s no problem, it’s the work you have to do in a football game. The boys did that and a big difference to the past is that it doesn’t cost us confidence, if we have to do it then we do it. If we are under pressure, no problem, we have to defend there and then after that, we know we will get chances. We had them, we scored a goal, had a big chance before half-time.

Second half, it was clear Porto would come out again with high intensity, but they then cannot keep the level until the end, so moments for us would come again.

The in-form Firmino made a big difference on his introduction, with his link-up play and pressing in the “hole” causing Porto problems.

The Brazilian continued his purple patch in front of goal by nodding in a Jordan Henderson (£5.3m) cross to put Liverpool 3-1 up.

On his decision to start Origi, Klopp added:

Bobby had absolutely no fitness issues and that he doesn’t get any, that’s why we started with Divock. Then because we defended as a unit in the first line not too good, we had to change it at half-time. It’s no problem, it was nothing about Divock.

Div in training, he’s in unbelievable shape and shows that all the time. How the game developed was not the most thankful game for a striker, but that’s how it is. He has no issues.

Henderson’s rich vein of form in the “number eight” role continued, with the England international coming off the bench and taking up that more advanced central midfield position.

The former Sunderland star provided a perfect delivery for Firmino’s goal and would have had a second assist had Mane not missed that aforementioned sitter.

Henderson recorded four key passes in a 20-minute cameo – twice as many as any of his teammates managed all game.

We will take a look at Henderson’s evolving role in a Members’ article next week, ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Huddersfield.

Van Dijk scored yet another set-piece goal but, much like in the first leg, he and the Liverpool defence were occasionally exposed by the Porto attack, especially in the first half an hour.

Porto registered 13 attempts on goal before Mane opened the scoring in the 26th minute, with Moussa Marega again profligate in front of goal and Alisson (£5.9m) called on to make seven saves across the game.

Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.5m) were given welcome breathers in the second half as Joe Gomez (£4.8m) was handed some much-needed minutes after four months on the sidelines.

While enduring a tough night from a defensive perspective, Alexander-Arnold recorded yet another assist (providing a fine through-ball for Salah) after the interval having nearly done so for Milner in the first half.

Looking ahead to Sunday, Klopp added:

In the last third of the season, we see the finish line already and you need to have a little bit of luck with injuries and stuff like that, it’s very important.

Now, [we play on] Sunday, we have three days to recover, but we fly tomorrow and stuff like that and then make ourselves ready for another very, very intense football game.

Cardiff are completely back in the race with the result from yesterday, so they will fight for it. I don’t think it will be less intense than tonight, so that’s the next job to do.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold (Gomez 66′), Matip, van Dijk, Robertson (Henderson 71′); Milner, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Salah, Origi (Firmino 46′), Mane.

Only 1 game this week, but that’s prob what Ings and Llorente will get too. Gray is a bit pap.

So by process of elimination... it’s Wilson

Going to BB this week. Is Vardy & Duffy to Firmino and Kiko/Masina worth a -4? Need to make up £0.3m and Duffy or JWP out seem the best options. Would then do Eriksen and JWP out for Mane and cheapo the week after.

    Ryan, Gunn
    TAA, Doherty, Kola, Duffy, Valery
    Sterling, Son, Eriksen, Martial, JWP
    Aguero, Vardy, Jimenez

Or just keep Vardy this week? High chance of points again WH, with Liverpool's next 2 feel like I need at least one attacker from them.

        Just keep Vardy.

In a straight shoot out, tough to call between Vardy & Firm.

        But Vardy +4pts edges it.

    Foster Ryan

    a) vardy & dunk to Wilson & vert (-4)
    b) vardy & eriksen to llorente & sterling (-4)
    c) Duffy to boly/ Cathcart
    d) vardy, eriksen & dunk to llorente, sterling & vert (-8)

That’s possibly the worst DF I’ve seen of anyone on BB on here.

Bennett unlikely to play and triple Brighton (yuk).

Rest of the team is dandy. I’d be making a few transfers to sure up the DF.

Even Bennett/Dunk > Yoshida/Jonny makes things look immediately better

BB35 to flop, especially those silly enough to be taking hits straight after a WC.
    Just like FH32 flopped
And just like WC34 flopped (so far).

Meanwhile at least half the top 10k that have never logged on here, continue to get green arrows, blissfully unaware that a template chip usage strategy even exists.

All depends on GW1 fixtures. They fell wonderfully well for mid priced assets this season.

you need some luck, as in any week, but it's the distraction factor of it that people don't factor in - people can actually get less points as a result of planning to use it, rather than just 'wasting' it at some other time

Really interesting option to play it early, especially if planning an early wildcard shortly after. No need to worry about a deep bench all season.

yep exactly, I mean you can just use it any time (but I generally like to have a cheap bench most of the time). The start seems a good time to invest a better defence anyway, whilst the lower-priced mids are slightly more 'unknown' - think Jota vs Mendy this season

Yeah - so much hype and thought goes into chips, where realistically you win/lose about 1 or 2% of your total season score through them. Nobody has a great season because their chips worked out well, or had a bad season because their chips flopped.

      1. SADIO SANÉ

yeah, read what you said about this yesterday or whenever it was. Most people will get 20 points ish from it, some will get 40 if they nail it - that's only a 20-point difference in a 2000+ point season, hardly worth the thought.

You can also miss out on points that you otherwise would have had if you'd been playing 'normally' instead of trying to optimise it.

How could anyone contrive to make FH32 flop? It wasn't that gameweek in itself, but the ability to pick a team for 31 and 33 and still cover 32's fixtures. There was nothing wrong with FH 32.

      You might be right.

But still think BB in a DGW is the best use of it.

We’ve had time to build team value and get in some half decent subs with 2 games. We know who is nailed in a team.

I got 137 points last year on BB week.

Obviously, this years isn’t looking great. But you never know

If Gracia drops any hint that...
    A) Holebas is fit (or indeed is out, and Masina will be the LB).

Any Watford defenders worth going for outside of Foster?

If my rival already have Wilson and ahead me for solid points, should I drop Deeney for Wilson or risk with King? Stats show that they are pretty similar potential goalscorers and King have penalties...

You would think Liverpool rest one of Mane/Salah in GW36 against an already relegated Huddersfield.

Not sure about using the TC chip on them now

They don't need rest, they're professional footballers with a handful of games left until months of rest. They'll both start

Best option on BB to replace Deeney:

        1. Straight swap for Gray
        2. Straight swap for Ings
        3. Deeney and Duffy out for Wilson and Yoshida for 4 point hit
        4. Deeney and Eriksen out for Llorente / Ings and KDB for 4 point hit

        Ryan Foster
        Robertson Duffy Vertonghen Bennett Bednarek
        Mane Eriksen Son Sterling Hojbjerg
        Jimi Aguero Deeney

1 FT and 0.1 ITB. Need to take a hit to do Deeney > Wilson or anyone over 6. Who else should I take out?

So basically Liverpool play 1 game in 10 days before the Barcelona match ? Surely thats enough of a break ?

          More than enough.

The Newcastle game could see some rotation but I highly doubt that if the title is on the line.

Exactly, maybe Trent and Vvd get a rest as Pool wont be doing much defending against Hudds.A change or 2 in midfield but i expect the front 3 to start and maybe get pulled off early.

slightly skewed way of looking at it, but yeah the fixture dates have been very kind to them

I thought Jimenez was the standout captain this week? Not seeing him mentioned as much now, any reason why?

last night's game has made Sterling, Aguero and Son less likely to be rotated imo

        Last decision make..
        Set on Deeney to Wilson...
So I need a 4.1k DEF to fund it, which realistically leaves me with:

        1. Bennet
        2. Yoshida

        Cheers!

        gtg?

        foster
        laporte - robertson - valery
        sterling - mane - son - eriksen - jota
        aguero - jiminez

        ryan - ings - duffy - dunk

BB active, backing the Brighton assets not to put me through heartache for a 2nd time lol

I am using extra-hit to take out at least Dunk for Boly, same triple Brighton and I think it`s enough.

ll right time to take a risk?

        Current squad

        Foster, Lloris
        Doherty, Valery, Duffy, TAA, Kolasinac
        Son, Salah, Eriksen, Deulofeu, Camarasa
        Vardy, Kun, Jimenez

        A) Eriksen -> Sane
        B) Eriksen, Vardy -> Sterling, Llorente
        C) Eriksen, Vardy, Camarasa -> Sterling, Moura, Long -8

I'm thinking about C. Long would only play this GW and risks sometimes do payoff.

        advice?

Thoughts on King instead of Wilson?

Seem to have very similar attacking stats but with King on penalties that seems to swing it for me

Deeney is my 8th 'attacker', so he was planned to play only in DGW 35 by BB.

        A) Deeney (5.9) --> Wilson (6.6) (better option, but expensive bench)
        B) Deeney (5.9) --> Long/Ings (4.6) (weaker option, but will be benched if Jiminez stays fit)
