Eriksen the star as Brighton defence nearly get job done

Spurs continued their impressive record at New White Hart Lane on Tuesday night with a dramatic 1-0 win over Brighton.

They laboured to the result which taught us plenty about their players’ credentials for the rest of the season.

The same can be said of Brighton who have responded well to recent calamitous results, potentially proving useful for at least one more Gameweek…

Spurs 1-0 Brighton

Goals: Christian Eriksen (£9.3m)

Assists: Dele Alli (£8.8m)

Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) outperformed Son Heung-min (£8.8m) again in Double Gameweek 35 as he scored the winning strike for Spurs on Tuesday night. The Danish international has now been involved in five goals in as many Premier League outings, while his South Korean colleague has now three times in that run of matches.

If anyone was going to bust through Brighton’s determined defence, Eriksen looked the most likely for most of the game. His total of seven efforts on goal was by far the highest of any player on the pitch, although none of them was taken from inside the box. Top for that particularly statistic Dele Alli (£8.8m) but clear cut chances came at a premium, with no Spurs attacker achieving a higher expected goals score (xG) than 0.39.

Despite dominating possession, with a 78.2% share, and registering a huge total of 29 shots, Spurs were unable to fashion a single big chance in the game. Eriksen’s winning goal was such an incredible individual effort from range that it certainly did not count as a clear opportunity, such is the quality of the player himself.

“I think it’s about quality. He has an amazing quality, he can shoot from outside of the box and have unbelievable shots with his left and right foot. Of course, it’s about mentality too but in the end, if you don’t have the quality, then you can shoot ten times without the keeper for sure you’re not going to score but with Christian, he can shoot and score.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Mat Ryan and his Brighton defence played well and were disappointed to lose their clean sheet so late in the game

While the story of the game will be headlined with Eriksen’s brilliance, a key factor was the impressive defensive job conducted by Brighton. The Seagulls have responded to their disastrous defeats to Bournemouth and Cardiff with two measured and organised containment jobs. Brighton did a fantastic job of limiting the space for their illustrious hosts to operate in, hence how they shot so often but were lacking clear cut opportunities. It was a night where a finish from distance was going to be the only way through. Lewis Dunk (£4.4m) especially excelled at Spurs as he registered a huge Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) score of 16. Meanwhile, for the second match in a row, Mat Ryan (£4.4m) made enough saves to earn an additional point. It was the first time he had done that in back-to-back fixtures since Gameweek 10.

“I thought the centre-halves were both excellent. I can’t fault their attitude for the game. We’re going through a difficult period and we needed a response from the lads and we got that. (Asked if the game plan worked): I think so. They, of course, had chances, they’re not gonna go through 90 minutes without having them, but when it comes to clear chances I thought they were minimal. I thought we defended really well. I genuinely felt we would hold out.” – Chris Hughton

Earlier this week we suggested that Brighton’s defensive display at Wolves could see their owners could look to start them against Newcastle. We saw very little at Spurs on Tuesday evening to put us off options such as Ryan, Dunk and Shane Duffy (£4.8m) for Gameweek 36.

Concerns that Brighton will play a more open game at home to the Magpies after sitting tight and compact away at Wolves and Spurs are understandable, but Chris Hughton appears quite aware of his side’s limitations at this point. After all, they are now 10.5 hours without a goal in all competitions. In both of their Double Gameweek 35 matches, they have found it hard to trouble their opponents but acknowledging that could be the key to their survival. Knowing how hard it will be to force attacking returns out of a goal-shy team, it is possible that Hughton may set up conservatively again when Newcastle come to the Amex Stadium.

“We’ve found it difficult to score goals. We’ve never been big goalscorers anyway. It’s harder to get up the pitch against them because you have to face waves and waves of quality players. It’s difficult because they press well.” – Chris Hughton

Brighton’s struggles offensively were good news for those who were invested in the Spurs defence. There were welcome returns for Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) and Kieran Trippier (£6.0m), both of whom were absent for Saturday’s trip to Manchester City. The goalkeeper missed out with a minor injury, which he overcame in time to play Brighton, while Trippier was simply back in the side following a rest.

Brighton also rotated too, as Hughton continues to tweak his attack from game-to-game. Florin Andone (£5.0m) came in for Glenn Murray (£6.3m), which has become quite customary for away games in recent months, while Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.7m) and Jurgen Locadia (£5.3m) replaced Jose Izquierdo (£5.9m) and Solly March (£4.7m).

“Some of it was forced upon us, but most of it was about having that little bit of freshness. When you are on the back of a difficult game at Wolves with the quality that they’ve got, it can take a fair amount out of the team mentally and it was the same today. The changing room at the moment is a very down changing room because of the manner of the defeat.” – Chris Hughton

There was a surprise appearance from forgotten man Vincent Janssen

Finally, there was a collector’s item on Tuesday as forgotten man Vincent Janssen (£4.5m) made his first appearance in a Spurs shirt since August 2017. The striker came on for the last 10 minutes and did not look too out of place. Mauricio Pochettino was full of praise for him upon his return, clearly very pleased that he could call on him during a time of injuries for Spurs.

“I think I told you and no one can be surprised. In January when we decided to involve him again in the squad again, he was a player that had the same possibility as the others. Today with a lot of problems with a lot of offensive players like Harry Kane or Lamela I think we needed Vincent. In the last few months he was injured, he has recovered from injury. And now he is like from January, he is part of the team. We are going to decide if he is available, sometimes to use, sometimes to not like another player. I don’t know why it is going to surprise people, what I told you four or five months ago, that is the reality that happened today. I am not a liar, I am not a person that needs to lie to you or my fans. He is part of the team and I am going to decide whether to use or not. But today we needed him and he was on the bench like he was against Manchester City. But he cannot be on the list in the Champions League.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Rose, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Trippier; Alli, Wanyama (Davies 82′), Eriksen; Son (Foyth 90′), Llorente, Moura (Janssen 80′).

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-3-3): Ryan; Bernardo, Dunk, Duffy, Montoya; Bissouma (Kayal 86′), D Stephens, Groß; Locadia, Andone (Murray 64′), Jahanbakhsh (March 73′).

Trust that the reason you're leading your mini-leagues is because you know how to score the most points, and continue to do what you've been doing all season.

Don't overthink it and buy players for ownership or anything, just continue doing what you think is going to get you the most points.

Incidentally, your team looks perfectly set to me.

Try to switch Pogba and Rondon in the next GW or two, but if your rivals are also left with no more chips I think 60pts will be very hard for them to compensate even with the odd differential captain choices. If you play more conservative I think you will be fine! as I'm leading all of my MLs with the closest rival on 100+ points behind me and my plan is to play some differentials here and there and enjoy whatever games are left until the season ends. Just have FUN!

Horrid week with KdB captain just one misstep. Still think it was an ok gamble but the cookie crumbled that way.

No fear of Salah and prefer double defence so

    KdB to Bilva
    Cathcart to Robbo

    Lloris
    Vvd Laporte Robbo
    Mane Son Bilva Jota
    Vardy Jim Kun

Reasonable? I fancy Vardy to keep on scoring and will probably hold him to the end.

    Foster Redmond Duffy Valery

Liverpool just need a win and so they could well be taken off once the game is safe imo. Also I think it was notable Firmino was rested for a live CL match.

It has to be plausible anyway that Mane and Salah will be managed.

Salah has been benched once this season - noteably when i had him captained away to a Burnley leaking 4 goals on average. Manè has missed two games with injury and come off the bench once this season. They`re both pretty much rotation proof, they`re just that fit/important.

At this stage he’s a reputation pick for me and I’m far from convinced he’ll get anything like 90 minutes.

And well if he hauls then triple Liverpool assists are probable.

I might yet go Bobby F as he is I think the most likely to get 90

I don't think klopp will rest Salah or mane. Salah rarely comes off very early sometimes mane does as he is the more explosive.

I also think alot depends on today. If United manage to get a result klopp will not rest anyone and go full throttle.

                It's difficult with United.
Those players are all talented, and capable of performing at the top level.
Young has been a very consistent performer for United over many years now, wing back isn't his natural position either, and he does seem to care about the club.
Same with Smalling and Jones, for the stick they get in the footballing world, both of them, I feel give everything in every game (like Herrera)....and I also don't believe that looking at the rest of the top 6 - would United rather have Luiz, Mustafi, Matip, Davidson Sanchez, than those two?
Fred is very inconsistent, I thought he was excellent against PSG, but rarely looks good in the PL.
Mata and Sanchez are decent squad players (like Shaquri, Pedro level).
Deeper problems at United, and I hope Ole can resolve them.

Very deep problems. First 11 is not good enough let alone team depth.

Hopefully with Mike Phelan getting as Sporting Director @ United, the recruitment improves

First 11 isn't good enough to win the league, but should be easily good enough for the top four.
As I say, on paper, compare any position from a United player to any other top four rival, and I don't think United have any real disadvantages.

Are Kolasinac, Alonso, and Rose so much better than Shaw?
Are Higuian, and Lacazette so much better than Lukaku?
Are Eriksen, Son, Torriera, Jorginho, so much better than Pogba, and Matic?

                      Nope.
But United should compete for Title. Quality of players must improve as well as their desire to play & win for United.
It's as if they don't care about United sometimes. That needs to be changed
Matic, Sanchez, fred all should go.
                      Young should retire.
One new CB alongside Lindelof & RB, DM & RW need to be purchased in the summer

Of course they should be aiming for the title, I'm just saying the current squad should be in the top 4 with relative ease.
Again to my original point, do I watch Young play and think, wow, Tripper is so much better than him, no. Are Wanyama, and Sissoko better players than Fred, no.

I suspect Matic, Young and Sanchez will leave in the summer, but I would expect to see a young players promoted.
Ethan Laird at right back, with Dalot.
James Garner, Chong, Greenwood - I expect them to all feature in the first team next year.

Deulofeu + 3x brighton defence. Deulofeu was very dodgy, atleast thats how i interpreted it based off of Gracia`s comments, and i didn`t really fancy Brighton to do anything after conceding 7 at home against two of the worst away teams in the league. Basically Murphy`s law.

The chips do bring an added lottery to the game, especially TC.

I've had a pretty shocking season myself, I put it down to taking a big risk with my pre-season team selection and having to play catch up ever since, also I don't usually take hits, and it seems this season has favoured the hit takers.

Thought it was a garbage week but a GW rank of around 100k and a 15k green arrow so far is a pleasant surprise.
BB that was quite punty and hasn't really paid off. Some bad luck Valery, some good luck Ryan - couldn't bring myself to take a hit for a keeper change. Once again Huddersfield single goals killed a double CS. Huddersfield been very destructive on my CSs all season which for a side with only about 20 goals seems crazy.

Yes I also felt let down by Valery, although with Southampton conceding in both games anyway it didn't really matter in the end, I believe JWP plays deeper when Valery doesn't play though, so maybe it cost me in other ways.

Even rougher than mine - should be guaranteed a mention on the Scoutcast if there is one tomorrow.
But at least you made it to the top of the January to May League and the brink of the top thousand last game-week.

Mine is 47 so far, with 7 to play, one of them being captain Sterling, and 18 so far languishing on my bench.
This was after playing my Free Hit this week, because I had wasted my wildcard when I played it back in GW21, and without making any transfers I would only have had 5 DGW players.

My old squad if I had played Bench Boost instead of Free Hit and not made any changes to it would however have scored 83 so far, with 2 to play.

Yes, I even finished up with a small green arrow, but you're way ahead of me in the overall rankings.

I had such a good start to the season too, so I can only dream of what might have been.

Nice, and agree that a good start is so important as its a tough slog if you start poorly. Thats one of the reasons that I used BB in GW1, got 100 with the average around 50 I think back then so I cant complain really!

I always dreamed of really nailing my initial squad and getting off to a flying start, and this season I managed to do that for once, scoring 104 and 110 in the first 2 game-weeks without using any chips and putting me into the top 200 at that stage.

Unfortunately I then ruined it all with my first wildcard, followed by other mistakes and missed opportunities, and it's been a long downhill slide for most of the season since then.

...it's so competitive now with so much free info out there, if you make a mistake or just get horribly unlucky it can kill your rank, you have to be able to take these swings on the chin now with the amount of active players having risen significantly. I never took the game anyway seriously until 2016/17 season, was a ghostship manager prior to that, but I've gotten more and more addicted to it. Really enjoyed this season and I've done pretty well with the captaincy overall, think this is also a huge factor in obtaining a good rank!

May I please have an opinion on the below?
      Ryan/Gunn
      TAA/Doherty/Duffy/Dunk/Valery
      Sterling/Eriksen/Son/Hojbjerg
      Agüero/Lacazette/Jimenez...
KDB to Salah means minus 3.4 ITB...
      ranking 12k, no ML rivals, TC remaining... who would you dispose of and acquire in the above team;
      a) Lacazette/Doherty to VVD/Quaner
      b) Lacazette/Eriksen to Mane/Llorente
      c) Lacazette/Dunk to Laporte/Quaner
      d) None of the above

46 currently after hits so not great. Took Ozil out after a 2 week punt so seeing him return was painful, and same goes for Vardy Duffy Dunk who I also transferred out (regret the Vardy one the most). Still, 8 to play tonight- a Bilva haul would make me feel a lot better

79(-4) with Aguero, Laporte, Lacazette and Captain Jimmy left. So, hoping for a goalfest in the midlands and a comprehensive whipping by City in Manchester. Too much to ask?!

need to make something happen, dropped 55 points on my rivals over past 2 GWs, mostly minor bad decisions

Would Aguero to Firmino this GW be mad? (then bring Aguero back for GW37)

    1. TeamSteam

Not mad, but kind of wasteful to spend transfers going back and forth. Liverpool are surely going to rotate someone for the Huddersfield game. I don`t think it will be Firmino as he was just rested, but he could still have his minutes managed.

do you need to make up 55 points in the remaining 3 GWs?
Then maybe a bigger differential is needed.

    A. Laca > Firmino
    B. Upgrade the defense ie. Duffy > Wan-B

    Foster
    Laporte / robbo / Doherty
    Eriksen / Sterling / Mane / Son
    Gray / Jimi / Laca

    Ryan / Redmond / Valery / Duffy

    Thoughts?

Is Eriksen/Deeney > Babel/Firmino worth a hit this GW? Bobby would join Mane as my Pool attackers, also have Son/Lloris from Spurs.

    A) Eriksen and Vardy -> Mane and Firmino
    B) Eriksen, Vardy and Duffy -> Salah, DCL and TAA (-4)

I sold as part of a -8 for BGW33. I could bring him back as I have KdB to deal with but I'm thinking Mane is a smarter move paired up with Salah. I then have the same midfield as my rival (Salah Mane Eriksen Son), and then whichever player he uses TC on I at least own to shield from any damage! I will (c) Salah this week.

Pogba is the midfielder with the best fixtures 37 and 38 thats for sure. The hard part is fitting him in (unless you're a KDB owner). I think Eriksen owners could be offered a route to him in GW37 if Spurs have top 4 wrapped up by then and therefore Poch decides to massively rotate for the GW37 fixture as it falls inbetween the Ajax ties. Thats what I'm hoping for anyway!

The thing is, United are struggling to create, even against top 6 outsiders. I can’t see the early OGS effect repeating, not even against Huddersfield.

Will his passion and form return after being told he can leave in the summer? Who knows.

      I have Pogba.
But I really want Salah, and I can’t ignore Eriksen’s form and Son’s attacking role in a team that does create.

I got rid for sterling (had money in bank) and definitely not bringing him back in.

His 2 penalties against west ham was a great parting gift but he’s shown very little offensive threat as of late and United are faltering

93 with Doherty, Jimenez, Sterling and Aguero (C) to go. Very happy with this GW, first 3 figure score of the season (hopefully) and OR is almost in the top 100k

Know it's not amazing compared to many people on here, but considering where i've been most of the season it's a big improvement

Well done mate. Onwards and upwards. I've 92 with sterling (c), kun, laporte, jota and Jimenez to go. It should be my first 3 figure score of the season. I'm sat at 1087 rank and really want to finish in the top 1k but looking around there are quite a few TC chips still to be played.
At this stage you have to prioritize what your aims are (ML, OR or just enjoying it). I hope you maintain your good run in this weird season. This is my 14th season and I'm 66 next, so I'm as tired as the players after the last gw. Already looking forward to the VAR season next time.

Want to get Mane in. Would you get rid of Eriksen or Son? Whenever I have Son he never seems to do anything for me haha

20 0dd points from fst and second in ml..both have mane and one used tc already in order to catch up should I do:
A)kun and eriksen to zaha and salah(-4)tc
    B) simply do eriksen to mane(tc)

United fans seem to have forgotten that if Pep wins another title against this Liverpool team then people will start putting him over SAF.

Era means nothing in the minds of today's fans.

Pep will release another documentary and get hailed as the GOAT, SAF who?

Currently on 76 points for bench boost with a 10k green arrow to 45k.

Only have 4 players left in aguero, Jimenez, kota and kola will this be enough to keep the green arrow?
