With an injury to Antonio Valencia earlier in the season moving Nani from the left wing to the opposite flank, Sir Alex Ferguson has had the choice of four players to field in the full-back position behind the flying Portugese wide man. Getting that balance to the team just right has proven to be an issue for the United boss, as he’s swapped John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Rafael time and again this season. In the past couple of weeks, though, the displays of the young Brazilian Rafael suggest that Fergie may have found the answer to his selection dilemma.

As the two chalkboards above show, whereas Ji-Sung Park, on the left wing, made just 44% of his passes in the final third -which allows Patrice Evra to push on forward behind him- Nani made 74% of his passes in the same area, which requires not just mobility from United’s right-back to cover the winger’s forages forward, but a defensive discipline to cover at the back.

Rafael possesses a natural ability for the role and has the advantage of youthful dynamism over his rivals for the spot and now, as he picks up experience, seems to be blossoming into a viable first-team option for the league leaders.

As the above Average Position chart against Blackburn shows, there’s not that much difference between Rafael (21) and Evra (3). However, a look at these chalkboards shows how impressive the defensive side of Rafael‘s recent performances have been.

He made fourteen tackles against Blackburn, winning thirteen, whereas on the opposite flank, Evra made seven tackles and won only four of them. Against Wigan the previous week, Evra grabbed the credit and a goal in the 2-0 win, but again Rafael put the shackles on the opposition. He made eight tackles and won seven, whereas Evra made none at all, in a performance that saw Rafael grab an assist and pick up all 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

As this Average Position map shows, Rafael played almost as a winger that day – a role that perhaps he is the most technically adept of all United’s right-backs to fill- allowing plenty width down the United right as Nani (17) continually drifted into the middle,

Despite these impressive displays, the real test is just around the corner for Rafael, with games against Arsenal and Chelsea following this week’s match at Blackpool. Selection for these showdowns will surely be testament to Ferguson’s faith in his ability and, given United’s current form, will make Rafael a real Fantasy prospect, at just £5.6m FPL.

My next 3 transfer will be:

    Out: RvdV, Adam, Drogs,
In: Nasri, Bale, Some striker (probably Rooney)

In which order would you do it?

Do people think the man u v blackpool game will be called off? I already have fabs Vdv and Coleman plus van der sar vidic nani and Adam. If it doesn't go ahead I'm screwed. Was thinking fabs and Coleman to nasri/lampard and Kolarov. Don't really want to sell Vdv as I bought him at 7.5. Do people think he'll drop to 8.1 by the time he's fit?

    Any help appreciated

Yeh I was thinking of doing fabs Vdv and Coleman to nasri bale and Kolarov. Think bale will benefit heaps from change of formation back to 4-4-2. But could also get lampard instead of bale.

I'd be surprised if it was called off, despite their lack of undersoil heating.

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/315

No signs of heavy snowfall there. I know forecasts are often wrong, but they've improved massively over the last few years.

I was chatting to someone in Blackpool today, and there's no snow up there at the moment. Far more down here in Surrey.

I have Williamson, Arteta and VDV. Adam, Vidic and Nani. I suppose the good news if the Blackpool match is called off then we're pretty much all screwed. It'll probably be a low scoring week.

Is there any sort of hint that Vidic was subbed off on Saturday for anything other than a rest? It just seems a little odd to rest a centre back, who didn't play in the week vs Rangers, ahead of the likes of Nani and Carrick.

He walked off grinning like a cheshire cat, so i doubt he's injured. It was to give J.Evans some more game time and a bit of confidence considering the Merk general's apprentice C.Smalling is now no.3 defender. Shame he got bummed by Samba then really. Chin up Jonny!

    In response to the article:

I think some of the tackles stats are slightly misleading as lets be honest, if you were a manager going to old trafford, are you going to attack down a wing consisting of park+evra or nani+rafael?? So its no wonder he made more tackles.

I understand he also made ma higher % successful tackles but I don't think there's enough data to be able to read into this. There's no denying however that he is an interesting prospect in FF but I still think he is quite volatile, and may lose his place in more defensively minded matches than BLA and WIG.

    Just my thoughts

I am not even sure of the relevance of comparing his output to Evra's. The real comparison is how he fares compared to other RB's at United? Evra could have a 0% tackle ratio/Rafael a 100% ratio but ultimately Evra will play every game where as Rafael will often make way to O'Shea in the tougher away games.

I guess he is similar in that aspect to Bosingwa and similarly priced.

                    Funkyav,

I think I'd rather have Dunn than MGP. Dunn is playing in the hole and should be on spot kicks. He usually has a good few weeks around these times before getting injured again.

You can check out the heatmaps from the villa game over here:

                    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=293185&cc=5739

I like Dunn's movement more than MGP's from a fantasy perspective.

That said... I'm not going for a BBurn midfielder myself at the time being.

even though i think dunn wont get a look in on free kicks i'm not overly convinced on MGP. MGP appears to be going through a scott parker purple patch of goals which surely can't last. he would then have assists to fall back on which for the last 10 games at least has yielded 0

              Worth considering then...

I wouldn't see any BB player as a long term investment so injury isn't too much of a cause for concern... bar the issue of falling short of the 60 minute mark of course.

I'm in desperate need of a differential - Dunn might just fit the bill.

He's played 90 minutes the last two games - anyone care to comment on his match fitness/form? I know he's made of paper, but with their fixtures and his FPL pedigree, if he's playing well i'll give it a shot. Havent got much to lose.

    Foster [Carson]
    A.Cole Rafael Kolarov [Coleman Foley]
    Fabregas VDV Bale Nani [N'Zog]
    Drogba Carroll Elmander

Used my sub this week doing Elmo>Kol

I personally am considering Malouda, with all of the solid support coming back into the side (Essien, Lampard & Terry) wouldn't you think Malouda would be free'd up more to get back to his old ways?

In saying that, I've quietly got Drogba in my radar, waiting to see how he goes this GW with Essien definitely back...

n'zog more capable of a singular large points haul, is best player for wigan by miles, but more inconsistent

etherington quite a form player yet his set pieces and pen duties make him dangerous at any point.

Different reasons, though - no undersoil heating at Broomfield Road, and a frozen pitch means no chance of playing. With the Newcastle game, the problem was the surrounding roads, pavements etc from a Health and Safety perspective.

i had him for 2 games and apart from hitting the post he did nothing. decided to double up on nasri and fabs instead which only lasted 1 game, now just nasri. signed nasri for the spurs game which proved a rare success this season. having a cracking run of merri-go-round transfers lately

fabregas ---> gerrard (gerrard injured after 2 games)
gerrard ---> fabregas (fabregas injured after 1 game)
fabregas ---> vdv (vdv injured after 10mins)

despite this i'm considering vdv ---> dunn, everyone's getting injured anyway so may as well buy a cripple

it's a bitch of a choice. dunn has only had 2 or 3 starts this season so has understandably shown nothing. i love MGP as a player but other than dunn's injury prone-ness can't see any thing else which elevates him above dunn.

I reckon there's a good chance it'll be ok. There's a difference between a pitch being in poor condition (or just less than perfect) and unplayable. And it's fairly rare in the top few divisions for pitches to be unplayable.

Games were being called off in January because of surrounding areas, not so much because of the pitches. Even without undersoil heating, Blackpool have time to get it ready.

Alright gents, can anyone give my team a once over for GW16 and give me some feedback. With my free transfer i'm currently thinking about Hahnemann > Begovic, as Foster's fixtures don't fall to kindly. I would like to play Brunt but I simply can't seem to slot him in anywhere.

    Foster
    Dann Toure Vidic
    Cahill Bale Nani(C) N'Zogbia
    Drogba Carroll Tevez

    Hahnemann Brunt Konchesky Coleman

Cheers gents, any feedback is fantastic. I may follow Mackey's opinion and play Brunt over N'Zogbia. Man City had one hell of a tough time at Stoke (as most teams will do anyway). Benching Cahill and Bale is too much of a risk for me.

Which is most critical right now:

    A) VDV out for Bale (bench Fabs)
    B) Fabs out for Nasri (bench VDV)
    C) Fabs out for Bale/Nasri AND Odemwingie out for Bent
    (bench VDV, -4pts)

alot of people on here the past two days are banging on about liverpool defenders. I was saying to myself, say nothing, fook them, dont get annoyed about it, but i cant help myself here 🙂

Jamie carragher is out of that back line, i wouldnt touch a liverpool defender till he's back. If you already have konchesky, fair enough, but i wouldnt expect clean sheets at all.

Judging by his world cup performances I'd be inclined to agree with them.

If I was going to get a Liverpool defender now it'd be the big Greek fella for his goalscoring potential. However, I already have Konchesky so I don't need any more Liv defence.
