Title-chasers expected to headline Gameweek 38 captaincy debate

The title-chasing players at Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to be the front-runners for the final captain debate of the season.

The 2018/19 campaign comes to a close with Gameweek 38 on Sunday afternoon, with the destiny of the Premier League trophy virtually the only thing left to be decided.

Second-placed Liverpool have been a devastating attacking force at Anfield this year, which should see some interest in options such as Sadio Mané (£10.2m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.3m).

The Senegalese international may have an advantage given that he has a much more reliable record at home over a longer period, scoring 12 goals in his last 11 Premier League matches in front of his own fans.

Furthermore, he is currently completely fit while Salah has been placed in concussion protocol.

Jurgen Klopp has said that at this stage he is confident the Egyptian will play a part in Gameweek 38, but he will have missed training for most of the week – so it will be interesting to see how much of a party his yellow flag plays in the captain poll.

The vote is now live on our website and can be participated in either in the embedded section at the bottom of this article or in the sidebar.

Meanwhile, Manchester City face an appealing trip to Brighton on Sunday, knowing that a win will secure a second consecutive Premier League title.

The Seagulls have conceded nine goals in their last four at home, while Manchester City have scored at least twice in each of their last four on the road.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) may prove to be the most popular of the Citizens options given he has attacking returns in two of his last three away trips.

Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero (£11.9m), who recorded his first blank in a home Premier League start this season on Monday night, will also be considered. He has two goals in his last four on the road as well.

However, with Manchester City’s attack slowing down in favour of their defensive solidity, maybe Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) will prove the most popular candidate.

Six clean sheets in his last seven Premier League outings has helped the centre-back become a seriously reliable option, especially with two attacking returns thrown in for good measure.

In fact, since the turn of the year, Laporte has posted a better points-per-game (6.79) than both Sterling (6.69) and Aguero (6.44).

Whether Liverpool defensive assets are strongly considered may depend on what Fantasy managers believe they can expect from Wolves’ attackers.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.0m) has been particularly effective against the top six this season although Wolves have not been in such impressive form away from Molineux in recent months.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.7m) has been a hugely exciting option in recent weeks, stringing together consecutive scores of eight, 11, 10 and 10 points over the last four Gameweeks.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m) has two attacking returns in that time, as well as benefitting from Liverpool’s three clean sheets.

The most reliable of them all from a long-term perspective this season has been Andrew Robertson (£6.8m), who assisted twice in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield.

However, with mini-leagues and overall ranking now the main focus of most managers, it is possible that we may see some bespoke captaincy decisions.

Those looking for differentials on the main players may have to roll the dice given the typically unpredictable nature of Gameweek 38.

Despite a blank against Manchester City on Monday night, Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) still has five goals and an assist in his last four home matches.

Coming to the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season are Chelsea, who have wrapped up Champions League qualification and are without a clean sheet on the road since Gameweek 20.

Huddersfield have been poor on their travels too with 15 goals conceded in their last four away matches.

That may cause some to consider their Southampton options for Gameweek 38, Nathan Redmond (£5.4m) the most likely.

He may have been rested for the trip to West Ham, but given the impact he made when he took to the pitch, he should return to the side on Sunday.

Crucially, Redmond has attacking returns in each of his last three home matches against teams outside the top six.

Very close in some important moneyleagues. Currently ranked as 735 overall and looking to get my best ever finish. But how should I approach the last GW with this team?

    Lloris
    Doherty - Laporte - Kolasinac
    Mane - Deulofeu - Sterling - Jota
    Jimenez - Agüero - Lacazette

    Bench: Foster, Son, Duffy, Dunk.

    2FT and 0.4M ITB.

What should I do here? A hit seems stupid before the last GW, but not happy to play any of the Wolves-guys against Liverpool, and the bench is not very helpful..

What would you do in this spot?

      I’d want Jim anyway.

He’s presumably cover for your rivals and it wouldn’t exactly surprise if he scored.

I’d be worried about Deu getting minutes.

Dunk and Son to Redmond and TAA? That gives you two premium defenders and TAA or Liverpool defence must be in rivals sides and us a great option.

Still leaves triple Wolves I guess if you bench Deu. But they all have a chance of returns and aren’t exactly premiums - more in the way of nice bonuses,

You’ll know best looking at your rank!

    RP on new article

What are your thoughts on these options gents?

    A) Jimenez > Rondon (and bench Jota)
    B) Jota > Babel (and bench Jimi)

    Rest of the team:
    1FT 0itb
    Lloris
    Robbo, Laporte, Valery
Salah (C), Sterling, Mili, JWP, XXXX
    Aguero, Wilson, XXXX
    (Foster) (XXXX, Doherty, Yoshida)

Stats have Rondon and Babel very close. I wouldn't mind playing whichever of Jota/ Jimi that I keep but to me it makes sense to play my differentials like Wilson, Mili and JWP otherwise what is the point of having them in a week like this!

Thoughts always appreciated - cheers lads.

They have only scored 2 goals full stop against a London team away all season. Once vs CHE in a 2-1 defeat and once vs WAT in a 1-1 draw

So it’s possible but an interesting stat

It is great reading these articles because a lot of people just follow them blindly and take them as gospel.
    1) There is always a bias towards the top teams
    2) There is always a bias towards attackers
    3) In this article there is no mention of the open teams who go for goals Palace, Bournemouth, Southampton, West Ham etc.
Even Fullham Newcastle has the potential of goals - last day of season etc etc -rotation - exhibition type game

It is fairly obvious where to go if you want a jump in rank.

Really need you help with a final move guys!
    Now 3rd in a ML:
3 points behind a leader, who has laporte, sterling, pogba, rash (no pool attackers)
1point behind 2nd place, who has Sterling and mane, no ManU.

Considering that what is the best move with 1FT, 1.6itb?

    1) Son Jimenez-> sterling long for-4 and bench jota. Shall I take a hit at all?
    2) doherty-> laporte and play either jota or Jimmi
    3) son-> bilva /pogba/ mili and play either jota or jimmi
    4) jimenez-> Zaha and play jota

    Foster (Ryan)
    Taa Shaw Valery
    Jota mane Salah Redmond
    Jimenez Wilson Aguero

    Subs: Son doherty duffy

    Lloris
    Robertson Laporte Shaw
    Salah(vc) Son Sterling(c) Jota Camarasa
    Rashford Jiminez

    Foster Gray Doherty Bednarek

    I have 0.8m itb and 1ft...

    Last day plans...

    Son + Jiminez > Masuaku + Aguero for -4

Is that worth it? Chasing 15 points and leader has Son but no Aguero. So I would captain him...

I would then sub Gray + Bednarek > Jota + Camarasa

ML 3rd and 4th are 35+ points behind but both have Aguero, so this would also block them.

Double city defence ederson and laporte on wildcard gw34 came good in the end.

Would you recommend taking some hits this week (possibly -8) to replace guys who didn’t show up last week (namely Firmino and koscielny).
    Might throw in Jiménez too.
Looking at bringing in Vardy/TAA or Coleman/Digne
I know -8 isn’t ideal but could pay off. If I had the luxury I would remove sterling and hazard but they’re too good not to play

Anyone else had a shocker this season?
It'll be my worst finish in 5 years of playing.
Can't really put it down to any specific reasoning either, anyone been able to work it out?

There are just a lot more people playing who know what they are doing this year (information explosion, Twitter mainly). It’s likely that you’re not doing any worse than before, just everyone else is doing better.

      My OR history this season;

      Gameweek 16 - 665k
Gameweek 26 - 82k (all chips played at this stage)
      Gameweek 37 - 30k

Conclusion - it paid this year to use your chips early!

        Interesting take.
I did pretty well from my chips, 100+ points on both BB, and FH.
        TC was less successful though.

It also depends on what you consider success. It's definitely much harder to get consistently great ORs every year. (Anyone can have one great year). The flood of information available has raised scores across the board. '50k is the new 1k' etc...

I was 40k last year, which was my best finish ever...had been between 50k-90k in the years prior to that.
This year I'm just inside 100k right now, but not confident about finishing there.
I have noticed the increase in information available to everyone - deadline warnings etc.

But I've also noted a real inconsistency amongst many teams/players this year also, and knowing when the jump on, and off, a bandwagon seems to be the most crucial aspect this year.

Well...there's a lot of luck of course. But I mean, skill should be enough to get you up to, I don't know, at least 200k every year? But I agree there's no point in studying it forensically every week like a maths exam. I don't even watch football. 🙂

I typically don’t like to follow suit and prefer to try find differentials. I think you have to be more strategic early on (say first 3rd of the season) then take more risks

Yes. Par for me is 10k, looking like 30k this season. I've made some stupid decisions tbf, wasted my TC & BB in single weeks because I got spooked over playing my BB in the double with 2 Brighton defenders & Deeney. Putting BB back a week also blocked me from using TC on Mane vs Hudd.

Chips have been okay for me, except TC.
I gambled at the start of the season trying to get Kane, Aguero and Salah in the same team, and struggled to find a good balance thereafter.

8 points behind the leader in my ML with a big prize on the line! My team and his are below.

Suggestions for the best use of the FT? 0.3 ITB. Would Son > Pogba be best?

    Me:

    Lloris - Foster
    TAA - Laporte - Doherty - Valery - Duffy
    Son - Mane - Sterling - Jota - Redmond
    Aguero - Rashford - Jimenez

    Him:

    Allison - Ryan
    Robertson - Azpi - Kolasinac - AWB - Duffy
    Salah - Son - Hazard - Gundogan - Westwood
    Vardy - Wilson - Jimenez

What are some changes the Premier League could make to mitigate the amount of meaningless games towards the end of the season involving teams seemingly on the beach? Perhaps a playoff for the final Europa League spot involving teams finishing 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th?

Could also do the same for relegation, with 15-18th playing off for the final relegation spot

They could, although that would be harsh on the team that finished 15th if they end up being relegated. As is for the team finishing 6th if they dont make Europa League but to a much lesser extent.

    Aguero - Vardy - Jiminez

    (Ryan - JWP - Valery - Peltier)

Not quite at the end but there or thereabouts.

How many hits/ transfers will you have taken by the end of the season and what is your current OR?

I'm pretty certain my willingness to take hits has cost me a better finish but keen to see if it looks to be a pattern!

    For me it's:

    Transfers made: 56
    Point hits taken: 96 (19 GWs) 😆
    OR (current) : 36k

About 76 points hits i think. 51 transfers?
Will prob do one or two before 38.
My biggest mistake was leaving vice on Eriksen not mane in 36. 22 points out of the window. This thing about hits or no hits is part of a larger picture, down to playing style and tactics etc.

    C) son to fraser/bsilva (or) jimy to rondon/perez/wilson/zaha/long/deney/wood/barnes, play 352 (or) 343

I’m fairly sure I’ve identified the manager most likely to change things around in 38. Here’s a man trying things out. All change 3 weeks in a row.

    37

    Travers
    Smith Simpson Cook Clyne
    King Ake Lerma Ibe Fraser
    Wilson

    36

    Boruc
    Clyne Mepham Cook Ake Simpson
    Brooks Lerma Gosling
    Wilson King

    35

    Boruc
    Ake Cook Mepham Stanislas
    Fraser Lerma Gosling Brooks
    Wilson King

This level of experimentation puts me off Bournemouth completely. I’m not at all sure that the match up with Palace is that great anyway. I’ve a really strong side and being in between Wilson and Jim I’m now playing Jim for sure.

(Side note - this Solanke starting is just about the one thing he hasn’t tried and he was a huge investment!)

If your teams are identical then yeah. Otherwise spot on captaincy pick and a successful differential can easily turn 21 points around the other way.

Hope Salah is fit otherwise stuck with triple Wolves. Easy to say now but should have saved a FT.
If Salah not fit him to Sterling, otherwise Son to ? B.Silva the obvious, anyone considering any others. 1FT 0ITB
    Lloris
    TAA, Doherty, Valery
    Salah*, Son*, Pogba, JWP
    Aguero, Jim, Zaha
    Foster, Jota, Duffy, Dunk

    Two questions if I may.

    A. Play Jimenez (Liv) or Llorente (EVE)?

    B. Play Bednarek or either Llorente/Hojberg? Already have Valery starting so question is whether to double up on Saints defence or play the Saints midfielder or Spurs forward.
