Title-chasers expected to headline Gameweek 38 captaincy debate

The title-chasing players at Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to be the front-runners for the final captain debate of the season.

The 2018/19 campaign comes to a close with Gameweek 38 on Sunday afternoon, with the destiny of the Premier League trophy virtually the only thing left to be decided.

Second-placed Liverpool have been a devastating attacking force at Anfield this year, which should see some interest in options such as Sadio Mané (£10.2m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.3m).

The Senegalese international may have an advantage given that he has a much more reliable record at home over a longer period, scoring 12 goals in his last 11 Premier League matches in front of his own fans.

Furthermore, he is currently completely fit while Salah has been placed in concussion protocol.

Jurgen Klopp has said that at this stage he is confident the Egyptian will play a part in Gameweek 38, but he will have missed training for most of the week – so it will be interesting to see how much of a party his yellow flag plays in the captain poll.

The vote is now live on our website and can be participated in either in the embedded section at the bottom of this article or in the sidebar.

Meanwhile, Manchester City face an appealing trip to Brighton on Sunday, knowing that a win will secure a second consecutive Premier League title.

The Seagulls have conceded nine goals in their last four at home, while Manchester City have scored at least twice in each of their last four on the road.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) may prove to be the most popular of the Citizens options given he has attacking returns in two of his last three away trips.

Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero (£11.9m), who recorded his first blank in a home Premier League start this season on Monday night, will also be considered. He has two goals in his last four on the road as well.

However, with Manchester City’s attack slowing down in favour of their defensive solidity, maybe Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) will prove the most popular candidate.

Six clean sheets in his last seven Premier League outings has helped the centre-back become a seriously reliable option, especially with two attacking returns thrown in for good measure.

In fact, since the turn of the year, Laporte has posted a better points-per-game (6.79) than both Sterling (6.69) and Aguero (6.44).

Whether Liverpool defensive assets are strongly considered may depend on what Fantasy managers believe they can expect from Wolves’ attackers.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.0m) has been particularly effective against the top six this season although Wolves have not been in such impressive form away from Molineux in recent months.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.7m) has been a hugely exciting option in recent weeks, stringing together consecutive scores of eight, 11, 10 and 10 points over the last four Gameweeks.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m) has two attacking returns in that time, as well as benefitting from Liverpool’s three clean sheets.

The most reliable of them all from a long-term perspective this season has been Andrew Robertson (£6.8m), who assisted twice in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield.

However, with mini-leagues and overall ranking now the main focus of most managers, it is possible that we may see some bespoke captaincy decisions.

Those looking for differentials on the main players may have to roll the dice given the typically unpredictable nature of Gameweek 38.

Despite a blank against Manchester City on Monday night, Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) still has five goals and an assist in his last four home matches.

Coming to the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season are Chelsea, who have wrapped up Champions League qualification and are without a clean sheet on the road since Gameweek 20.

Huddersfield have been poor on their travels too with 15 goals conceded in their last four away matches.

That may cause some to consider their Southampton options for Gameweek 38, Nathan Redmond (£5.4m) the most likely.

He may have been rested for the trip to West Ham, but given the impact he made when he took to the pitch, he should return to the side on Sunday.

Crucially, Redmond has attacking returns in each of his last three home matches against teams outside the top six.

      2) Wilson, or take your pick from Mitrovic, Perez, Rondon, Zaha, Batshuayi, Arnautovic
      3) No I expect heavy rotation

Deulofeu is surely a Rotation threat. I was hoping he gets his rest against Chelsea tbh.

2 FT. 0 ITB. Sitting at 11.5k OR...

        Lloris
        Robertson / Laporte / Valery
        Salah* / Mané / SON / Jota
        Aguero / Vardy / Jimenez

        Foster // Yoshida / Hojbjerg / Masina

Getting Yoshida in was a bad move. Blocked an easy Redmond transfer!

Regardless, best use of 2 FT this week?

        A) Son/Hojbjerg > Bilva/JWP
        B) Son/Hojbjerg > Siggy/Redmond
        C) Perez/Rondon/Sterling etc?

What else is worth a suggestion? Would you take a -4??

Tottenham appeal Heung-min Son red card decision after push on Jefferson Lerma

Spurs will argue Son’s push should have not been deemed violent conduct and believe the red card was an excessive punishment.

Son pushed Lerma in the chest but referee Craig Pawson missed Lerma appearing to strike Son in the back and then standing on his foot. Spurs had until midday today to decide whether to contest the dismissal.

Will you be playing your captain safe or risky this week?

The safe options are the City & Liverpool assets: Aguero, Sterling, Mane & Salah (Although Salah has become slightly risky with his concession)

Or risky: Wilson, Fraser, Wood, Barnes, Babel, Mitrovic, Vardy, Hazard, any United player (Although they should be the safest of the lot at home to relagated Cardiff), Redmond, Sigurdsson, Deeney or Arnautovic.

Personally I think I will be sticking the armband on Wilson. City have tightened up recently and aren't blowing teams away. Wolves could really give Liverpool a game, they could be without Firmino and have a below-par Salah.

I think he's the best option of the premium safe picks. Normally I would go with Mane as he rules at home but a lot depends on Brighton and their attitude. As you say, an early goal and I think it could be a celebration.

As mentioned earlier Wilson relies a lot on Fraser who has AWB to get past so think perhaps Zaha better or possibly Arnie as Watford players will want to avoid injuries ped cup final

But Zaha has one goal and three assists at home all season.

There's a few players I'm really interested in punting on and a 12-15 point haul from an unfancied player incoming. In my situation with just 2nd place in a mini league and 100k OR at stake I would prefer to gamble on a big performance rather than a Sterling or Aguero.

Arnie then. Zaha (away) is consistent but rarely hauls

(I’ve clawed my way up from 500k to within a point of 100k just to mess up my last three captains

                      KdB over Jota

Arnie does interest me. When he's fit I think he's the best of the mid-priced forwards. I was planning on benching Jimenez and replacing Son, I might bring in Arnie and just leave Son to rot.

I feel your pain with captaincy, I've had KdB twice this season and both have ended in disaster. If Pep says he's fit for Sunday I could be tempted by a 3rd spell.

I guess, but to truly recreate that moment...or even to top it, Brighton will need to be 3-1 as we move into stoppage time.

Looking at Norwich and Sheffield United, it looks like Teemu Pukki would be the main man to consider from their attacks. Any fans think he and Norwich can make the step-up?

Defence-wise, Dean Henderson could rack up the save pts if Manchester United let him stay at Sheffield United.

                  6.0m probably.

6.5 is steep for a promoted team striker.

I hope you're wrong... 29 goals in champ league isn't too shabby.. I think he had 10 or so assists as well

I know what you meant...but 29 goals in the Champions League would indeed be very impressive!

7 Goals in a season for Celtic.
8 Goals in two seasons with Schalke

History in top divisions doesn't inspire confidence is all I'm saying.

Pukki himself has said that he started living and training like a professional only few years ago. He's a lot more physical player now. Not saying that he will do well in PL, but he's a different player compared to his Celtic and Schalke years.

No, he has never scored in the CL proper. 10 appearances, no goals.

He has 4 goals and 3 assists from 9 games in CL qualifying but they were against Bangor City and Reykjavik, hardly the greatest opponents.

Similar in Europa League, he scored a few in qualifying against teams you probably never heard of but never in the EL proper.

Pukki couldn't hold down a regular place at Celtic in his time there, averaging 44 minutes per appearance (39 appearances) before being sold to Bröndby.

All in all, he doesn't have any record to get excited about.

It'll probably be fixture dependent on whether or not I take anyone from one of the promoted teams, no way I even look at them if they play multiple top six sides in the first 5 GW's.

Pukki will be in my team, if their fixtures are decent and his form is there on pre-season.

I’ll be investing in midfield, and at the moment it’s hard to see any stand-out budget strikers who are guaranteed to start up front, as Wilson & Jimenez price will rise. Why not take a little gamble for the first few gws?

Yeah, we'll need to gamble on cheap players if we want to afford Salah, Sterling, Robertson and TAA. I'm keen to have those four in my team.

Sheffield United are interesting, especially their overlapping centre backs, and as they play 3-5-2, the wing backs will naturally get forward.

If interested, have a look at this video which looks at their system in detail, focusing on the centre backs - https://www.footballdna.co.uk/features/sheffield-united-3-5-2-attacking-overlapping-centre-backs/

Enda Stevens is their WB on the left, 4 goals and 6 assists this season. Also worth looking at their outside CB's Basham (4 goals, 1 assist) and O'Connell (3 goals, 3 assists).

Any thoughts on this setup, I am 14 points behind leader in money league ( after making up serious ground in last few weeks ).

              My team for GW38:

              Guaita (Pickford)
              Robertson Laporte Digne Manquillo (Jonny)
              Hazard Salah(C) Fraser (Siggy Westwood)
              Wilson Robson Jimenez

              Rival Team (from GW37)

              Foster (Boruc)
              Diop Bednarek TAA Cathcart
Moutinho Son Sterling Mane Eriksen (Adam Smith)
              Ageuro (Firmino Perez)

I have 3.3 mill in the bank but have already used transfer this week for son > Fraser.

Help on the following would be much appreciated!

              1. Are there any good trades that would use the 3.3 mill but be worst the 4 point hit that anyone can suggest. Having the 3.3 seems like a waste but can't really see anything, maybe bring pogba in...

              2. Should siggy start? I think he should but not sure over who, probably Manquillo is my thinking as Fulham been looking better over the last 5 GWs.

                Presumably

If he missed a game it’d have been last week to Cardiff - not dissimilar to the Burnley match he missed.

Palace might change things around a bit but that’s only really likely in midfield

Rivals have sterling, and 1 of them has laporte, pogba and rashford.
              1FT, 1.6itb

              1) Son Jimenez-> sterling long for-4 and bench jota. Shall I take a hit at all?
              2) doherty-> laporte and play either jota or Jimmi
              3) son-> bilva /pogba/ mili and play either jota or jimmi
              4) jimenez-> Zaha and play jota

              Foster (Ryan)
              Taa Shaw Valery
              Jota mane Salah Redmond
              Jimenez Wilson Aguero

Probably the worst week for BB due to teamsheet uncertainty, unfortunately, but you probably know that. If you are to BB make sure your transfers get in some sure starters. How many FTs do you have?

Yeah I'd just do Pingissimus' move, or Siggy or something. Not very exciting I'm afraid!

                Ooof

Double Bournemouth looks dangerous. But decent chances of multiple css I guess

Just Son to Redmond for me with a differential captain.

Chap in my h2h ML semi last week played his BB for a minus 1.

He won. His opponent scored 28 but had another 28 on his bench.

              2FT, 0.0itb, no chips
              1) Son, Wilson > Deulo, Vardy
              2) Son, Jim > Pogba, Rondon
              3) Son, Jota > Siggy, Redmond
              Other...?? Different combo from above?

              Ryan, Foster
              Robbo, TAA, Laporte, Valery, Duffy
              Mane, Sterling, Son, Jota, JWP
              Aguero, Jimenez, Wilson

Got the same predicament. Looking at Son, Jim > Mane and Long or Bilva and Zaha.

I've got Pogba so I could see why you might move for him and Rondon. Maybe look at Deeney (think he is the same price?).

Haha. Completely forgot about Deeney since his red card. Not a bad shout. Thanks.

              Pick one:

              A) Pogba (CAR)
              B) Bernardo Silva (bha)
              C) Zaha (BOU)

As ML win safe going to go for bit of a punt with free transfers to see if can get up into top 10 k

              Thinking

              Son and Jimenez to

              A Babel and Arnautovic.
              B Sigurdsson and Rondón
              or play safer
              C B Silva and Rashford

I wouldn't exactly describe Rashford as a 'safe' pick atm 🙂

Think I like Siggy and Arnie this week. Do you already have Wilson?

Having gambled without Mané and Sterling for the last two weeks has put me in a position where I'm only trailing by 2 points in my main ML.
I fully expect to fall behind again this last week, but fingers crossed 😀

Anyways, the question is who do I cap:
              A) Salah (rival doesn't have him)
              B) Aguero

He's only missing Barca because of concussion protocol. He'll be even fresher than his teammates.

Man United for the champion next campaign. Less one competition to be worried!

Is Rashford a viable option if he meant having to sell Wilson or Jimenez?

Are you benching Jimenez are playing him? He's first sub for me so potentially expendable. I'd keep Wilson, he has good away form away and Palace could concede.

              RP!

              Lloris
              Robertson Laporte Shaw
              Salah(vc) Son Sterling(c) Jota Camarasa
              Rashford Jiminez

              Foster Gray Doherty Bednarek

              I have 0.8m itb and 1ft...

              Last day plans...

              Son + Jiminez > Masuaku + Aguero for -4

Is that worth it? Chasing 15 points and leader has Son but no Aguero. So I would captain him...

I would then sub Gray + Bednarek > Jota + Camarasa

ML 3rd and 4th are 35+ points behind but both have Aguero, so this would also block them.

Nice one, expected to regain his place this weekend then, i.e. Forster starting just a one off? Got BB to play but don't want a non-playing keeper.

Ralph stated that he wanted to play Forster to see what he could offer the team - hopefully that performance on Saturday was enough.

Pls help: I am currently joint top in my cash league with 13 points separating the top 5.

              Here are my team list
              Lloris
              Robbo TAA Valery
              Hazard Mane Pogba Jota
              Kun Jim Long

              Foster Doherty Duffy *SON

Which of these three options will score most:

              Sterling, Long & Jota
              Sterling Redmond & Jimenez
              Pogba, Redmond & Vardy
