Key dates for Fantasy managers over the summer break

The dust is still settling on 2018/19 but we’re already looking ahead to next season.

There is plenty of football to be watching over the summer for those looking to get their fix and some of it may well have a significant impact on Fantasy managers in 2019/20 – particularly the Africa Cup of Nations and Copa America.

We’ve outlined some of the key dates in the article below.

Reopening of the transfer window

Thursday 16 May

The Premier League transfer window reopens for business at midnight on Thursday.

The transfer of players from another national association may only take place once the FIFA Transfer Matching System opens on Tuesday 11 June, however.

Deals can be made by top-flight English clubs until Thursday 8 August, which will likely be a day before the start of the 2019/20 campaign given that a Friday night fixture has been the curtain-raiser in each of the last two seasons.

Some deals have already been arranged, of course, with Aaron Ramsey set to join Juventus on Monday 1 July after having signed a pre-contractual agreement.

The Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga windows all open at the start of July, so that may well be the departure date for Eden Hazard should the ever-strengthening rumours about a move to Real Madrid materialise.

Chelsea, of course, are taking their appeal against Fifa’s two-window transfer ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but will at least have Christian Pulisic to call upon in 2019/20.

Championship play-off final

Monday 27 May

We know already that Norwich City and Sheffield United will be in the Premier League next season and those two clubs will be joined by one of Aston Villa, Leeds United or Derby County in the top flight.

Villa progressed to the final on Tuesday evening and Leeds have a 1-0 advantage going into the second leg of their semi-final against Derby on Wednesday, with the “richest game in football” to be held at Wembley on Monday 27 May.

We’ll soon be bringing you our usual ‘Promoted’ pieces on the Canaries and the Blades, with further Fantasy articles to follow on the play-off winner.

Europa League and Champions League finals

Wednesday 29 May + Saturday 1 June

The Europa League and Champions League finals are all-English affairs, with Chelsea facing Arsenal in the former and Liverpool taking on Spurs three days later.

The result of the Europa League could be particularly significant next season, especially if Arsenal triumph – a victory over the Blues means that they would join Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City in the group stages of next season’s Champions League.

That would mean that the Gunners wouldn’t have to endure the dreaded Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround for the first half of the season, at least.

It could also lead to further rotation from Unai Emery in 2019/20, of course – the Arsenal boss having largely fielded second-string starting XIs in the group stages of the Europa League this season but having named increasingly stronger teams towards the back-end of the competition, with plenty of changes made on the domestic front in April and May.

UEFA Nations League Finals, European Championship Qualifiers and International Friendlies

Wednesday 5 June – Tuesday 11 June

There will be plenty of Premier League interest in the last four of the UEFA Nations League, with England, the Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland battling to win the inaugural edition of this competition.

Portugal take on Switzerland on Wednesday 5 June before England and the Netherlands clash a day later, with the final and third-place play-off both taking place on Sunday 9 June.

Qualification for the 2020 European Championship also continues in this week, while there are a number of international friendlies involving South American nations taking place around this time as those countries involved in the 2019 Copa America (see below) ramp up their preparations.

These games take place two months before the start of the new Premier League season so any impact on Gameweek 1 of 2019/20 will likely be minimal but we will keep an eye on any injuries that are picked up by top-flight players over this international week.

2019/20 Fixture Release Date

Thursday 13 June

What it says on the tin: the Premier League will release the fixtures for the 2019/20 season on Thursday 13 June, with the television companies likely to announce which matches will be broadcast live a couple of weeks after that date.

We’ll have reaction on that day and take a look at which sides have the most – and least – favourable runs in the first weeks and months of 2019/20.

2019 Copa America

Friday 14 June – Sunday 7 July

While there is no World Cup or European Championship this summer, there are major international football tournaments taking place in South America and in Africa.

The Copa America kicks off first and ends less than five weeks before the start of the 2019/20 season.

Ten CONMEBOL nations plus Japan and Qatar will take part in the three-week-long tournament in Brazil, with the four teams making the furthest progress having to contest six matches (there is a third-place play-off, as well as a final).

Premier League players taking part will obviously have their domestic pre-season disrupted, which could affect some line-ups in Gameweek 1 – although the Fantasy assets involved in the Copa America last four will have an extra week to recover for the forthcoming season than those who were involved in the 2018 World Cup final/third-place play-off.

The likes of Roberto Firmino, Richarlison, Gabriel Jesus, Ederson, Allison and Felipe Anderson could be competing for the host nation, while there are reports suggesting that Sergio Aguero could be back involved for Argentina after a year-long absence.

Manuel Lanzini, Roberto Pereyra, Salomon Rondon, Fabian Balbuena, Miguel Almiron, Maya Yoshida, Alexis Sanchez, Lucas Torreira, Davinson Sanchez and Yerry Mina are among the other players who could be representing their respective countries and we’ll keep you posted on the squad announcements and these Fantasy assets’ subsequent involvement over the next two months.

2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship

Sunday 16 June – Sunday 30 June

England are one of 12 nations represented at this summer’s UEFA European Under-21 Championship and will need to negotiate five fixtures in less than a fortnight in order to win the tournament.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the Premier League players involved, with the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, James Maddison, Harvey Barnes, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Phil Foden among those who could be on show in Italy and San Marino.

The competition finishes around six weeks before the start of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, so may not have the same impact on Fantasy assets in Gameweek 1 as, say, the Africa Cup of Nations might – although pre-season preparations will still be affected.

2019 Africa Cup of Nations

Friday 21 June – Friday 19 July

Possibly of more concern to Fantasy managers than the Copa America will be the Africa Cup of Nations, which culminates only three weeks before the start of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

This is the first time that the Africa Cup of Nations will feature 24 teams (previously only 16 countries took part) and the final four nations involved in the competition will have to play seven matches this summer, with there being a third-place play-off as well as a final.

Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are the obvious worries for the first couple of Gameweeks of the Premier League season, with Senegal and host nation Egypt the favourites for the trophy among many bookmakers.

The likes of Yan Valery, Romain Saiss, Riyad Mahrez, Wilfried Zaha and Serge Aurier – among others – could be involved for their respective countries although Naby Keita will miss out and Jeffrey Schlupp is a major doubt.

As with the Copa America, we’ll keep you posted on the squad announcements and the tournament itself as we monitor the Fantasy assets involved.

2019/20 Fantasy Premier League Launch Day

June/July

Probably not even FPL Towers know when this will take place just yet but we can expect the 2019/20 game to be released in early-July – or maybe even late-June given the pattern of earlier releases that has formed in recent years.

FPL has been launched on the following dates in previous seasons:

SeasonFPL launch date
2018/195 July
2017/1812 July
2016/1719 July
2015/169 July
2014/1516 July

Our content will be ramping up around that time regardless, with pre-season friendlies – including the 2019 International Champions Cup – commencing in early-to-mid July.

The season itself will commence on the second weekend in August.

Got to disagree. The EPL is being ruined by teams who don't have a big fanbase and whose population have no interest in football. Teams like Brighton, Bournemouth, Burnley etc.

Give me Villa, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest back in the PL any day. History in the top league, proper football places with big stadia. Would rather see Celtic and Rangers in the PL than some of those clubs.

Teams like Burnley and Bournemouth are most definitely not ruining the Premier League.

I love watching Bournemouth play. If I lived there, even as a QPR fan, I’d jump at the chance of a season ticket at the Vitality.

Love Sean Dyche too. More power to Burnley, I say!

What a ridiculous comment. Burnley is steeped in football history. Burnley were one of the original founders of the Football League (along with Derby and Villa btw, not Leeds, Sheff Weds or Forest) and the town is football mad. You also omitted Derby who have been champions twice

Great game Leeds v Derby. Leeds finished 9pts ahead of Derby in the league. Unfair. They should scrap the play offs and just have top 3 get promoted like it used to be.

Naive in what sense? It's just my opinion. I know it's all about money generation but I don't agree with it. The 2 teams in the final finished 5th and 6th in the league. It's a nonsense that one of them will be promoted when Leeds have proved to be the better team over the season after finishing 3rd.

We should be having the 3 best teams from the championship being promoted to the premier league but instead we have 2 of them plus the 5th or 6th best.

It's not about it being fair.

They'd have to make the league smaller if they want to scrap the playoffs.Far too many teams will have nothing to play for, which in turn will affect other teams at both ends of the table.

Yeah that is a fair point and valid but I just think it's fundamentally wrong that you can potentially have a situation where a team finishing miles behind the 3rd place team can get promoted ahead of them via the play offs. Maybe reducing the amount of teams in the league is the answer then

Yeah, I think having a smaller league is the only way to make it 'fair', but then that would also not be fair on the teams who all of a sudden find themselves in League 1 after finishing 6th from bottom which would normally keep them up, and then the knock on effect all the way down the leagues if they want to make every league fair.

Leeds blew this in January when they didn't strengthen. Bielsa's tactics always lead to his players being knackered by the end of the season.

Hope Villa win, but they are so rubbish defensively I can see them losing this.

                  This and that.

Leeds gambled massively on promotion this season with an unsustainable model if it failed.

Bielsa is on 3 times as much as the next best paid Championship manager and I believe I read somewhere that they signed players to expensive 1 year deals in the hope they could resign them at a similar price in the Prem next season.

They looked odds on for promotion at Christmas, their fall has been sadly spectacular.

                      Really?

When did West Brom and Derby have a bigger history than Leeds?

Villa, maybe, but Leeds under Revie were one of the biggest English teams of all time.

Just Villa. Only needs 1 team with a better history for them not to have the best.

No maybe about it. It's not even close.

For most modern football fans, Villa represent utterly boring mediocrity. Are they at least trying to play good football this time?

They have definitely been schite and boring in the modern day. They look exciting under Dean Smith though for the first time in years.

Thoughts on captaining Liverpool Defenders (TAA and Robertson) next year?

Their outside backs get so high up the pitch (passed the midfielders) and put in tons of crosses. They also kept a cs in over half of their games, including 10 in 14 games at home vs non top-six teams.

TAA and Robertson averaged 8.72 and 7.77 points per home match against the non top-six, respectively.

                For comparison:
                Sterling 9.18
                Salah 8.36
                Mane 8.93
                Kun 7.7
                Auba 6.5

Not so sure about captaining them but I definitely plan on doubling up on them. Will be costly but should be worth it.

I'll definitely be doubling up but as you said it will be costly, so I'm thinking I could have one less big hitter and captain one of them instead some weeks.

3 on the back with 2 pool and laporte and 2 fodders.
Just hope that Taa wont be an elevator like this year and Gomez will play next to vvd instead of R or L back.

                    This could go horribly wrong
I rather have a solid 4-4-2 that can be 3-5-2 in case a defender misses out

Abraham, Mings and Tuanzebe FC vs Mount, Wilson and Tomori United. What a final.

Whichever team wins will crash and burn next season when their parent clubs tell them to shove it when they try and buy the players who've carried them this high in the summer. Fact.

City: Fernandinho successor needs to be found if Gundogan is left wanting. A leftback who can be fit all season would be nice.
                  Rumoured signings- Chilwell and B.Fernandes

Liverpool: Hard to say how to improve this side. Strikeforce looks stacked enough, defence will always look good with VanDijk. Midfield is perhaps a worry, but with Keita, Milner, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Fabinho and Chambo to fill three berths in the midfield, its not a huge worry.
                  Rumoured signings- DeLigt.

Chelsea: Replacing Hazard is going to be repulsively difficult, probably impossible. Pullisic is a good one. A striker who score goals is essential, no more of this Alvaro/Olivier/Gonzalo nonsense. A proper striker. Kovacic hasnt been great, so I wouldnt think he'll be signed permanently. Hope Sarri signs one ro two players and intergrates kids like Reece James, CHO etc.
Rumoured signings- Tielemans (weird when they already have RLC, but okay).

Spurs- Another midfielder needed. Squad is pretty complete, but rumours going around that Eriksen might depart. If so, he needs to be replaced. Strikeforce looks fine, as does defenders. Fullbacks inconsistency all season needs to be recticified, get a new fullback.
Rumoured signings- Tielemans, Sessegnon, Brandt, A.Gomes.

Arsenal: Where to begin? Need at least two new defenders, and thats being optimistic. Actual wingers required, Alex Iwobi is NOT the answer. Enough of this Mkhi on the wing nonsense. And oh, did I mentionRamsey has left a gapingof hole in thaf squad?
Rumoured signings: AwB, Maguire, Fraser, Brandt, Madisson

United: Might actually need to do an AC Milan and buy a new starting XI. So many things horrible about their squadbest, and I think I speak that in an objective manner. Why they giving new contracts to deadweights like Smalling and Jones? Because theyre English?
Ole seems keen to build a young english core for United, with only 1 or 2 exceptions.
Rumoured signing- WanBissaka, Brooks, Maguire, Koulibaly, Sancho,Tielemans.

Liverpool need a left back for sure. They might look for a permanent partner for vvd I guess.

The only other area I see is a number 10 type but that’s a smallish market at their end of the food chain

                  City:
                  1. CDM - Fernandinho back up
                  2. GK - Bravo leaving i guess
                  3. Sane replacement if he goes.
                  4. LB

                  Liverpool:
                  1. Striker - Steridge replacement
                  2. LB - Moreno replacement
                  3. One CM maybe as Milner is playing since 100 years now 😀

                  Spurs:
                  1. CAM - Eriksen might go.
                  2. CDM - Dier & Sissoko hmm
                  3. FB
                  4. CB if Toby goes

                  Chelsea:
First Hope that they get ban relieved for some time &
                  1. Hazard replacement as Willian is also bad. So, a Winger
                  2. STRIKER - which they just can't get right since last few years apart from Costa.
                  3. CB

                  Arsenal:
                  1. Sell all the Deadwood & sign 2 new CB.
                  2. Out N out Winger (Wilf 😉 )
                  3. CAM
                  4. One FB ??

                  And here we go again,
                  Manchester United:
                  1. First if all, SELL Sanchez,Rojo,Dermian etc Deadwood.
                  2. CAM - Tielemans I'm looking at you buddy 😉
                  3. CB - Smalling, Jones,Bailly hmmm.
                  4. RW - James maybe that (Swansea City youngster)
                  5. RB - Awbeast would be great
                  6. Striker if Romelu is sold
                  7. Pogba replacement if sold

You could be right on Wilf to Arsenal- rich history of moves in that direction. I guess he’d prefer London this time - family etc.

It could be a dynamite front line. Dunno enough about the manager to know if that’s the way he swings though.

We should be going allout for Griezmann. He can play anywhere across the front 3 and is one of the only names I’ve heard linked to us that is almost definitely Utd quality.

Already confirmed he’s going to Barca now by the looks of it, could make a good domino effect though.

                    Griezmann > Barca
                    Coutinho > Chelsea
                    Hazard > Madrid

How would Chelsea sign Coutinho? They are banned from registering new players for the next 2 windows. I assume this applies to loans as well?

Still trying to appeal the ban as of now, if they succeed and hazard goes he makes the perfect replacement.

I see. Has a club ever successfully appealed the ban? Athletico, Madrid and Barca all got their bans uphelp. Barca successfully got it postponed so they could sign a load of players. That's the best outcome that Chelsea can realistically hope for isn't it?
