Salah’s FPL value up for debate despite another fine season

Mohamed Salah has made it into our Team of the Season for the second successive year.

It was always a tough ask for the Egyptian to emulate his 32-goal debut season at Anfield and the Liverpool winger indeed fell ten goals short of his tally in 2017/18.

Salah also finished the season just gone with 44 fewer Fantasy Premier League points than he managed in his record-breaking campaign.

Nevertheless, Salah was still the leading points-scorer in FPL, was the co-recipient of the Golden Boot and banked more attacking returns (34) than any other Premier League player in 2018/19.

The Egypt international was only the fourth-most-popular midfielder in our end-of-season poll, having gained 15.42% of the vote:

The Statistics

Salah recorded only one double-digit haul in both the first and last 15 Gameweeks of the season

Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) was the only outfield player to score at a better rate of points per match (6.88) than Salah (6.82) last season but there was little to separate the premium midfield pair.

Starting 2018/19 at £13.0m in FPL, Salah was never likely to scoop any award for best-value Fantasy asset.

There were 25 FPL midfielders who had a superior rate of points per million spent, with fellow premium options such as Sterling, Eden Hazard (£11.0m) and Sadio Mane (£10.3m) also representing better value for money based on that statistic.

While his goals tally was down on the previous campaign, Salah matched 2017/18’s total of 12 assists in the season just gone.

Bonus points remained relatively elusive, with 25 FPL assets banking more than Salah (18) last season.

On just one occasion (the 1-0 win over Brighton in Gameweek 22) did Salah bag any bonus points without registering more than one attacking return first.

Richarlison (£6.4m) was the only FPL midfielder who had a worse minutes-per-baseline-BPS average (19.3) than Salah (18.7) in 2018/19, with the Egyptian the worst offender in his position for shots off target, dispossessions and big chances missed.

Gerard Deulofeu (£5.7m) was the only Fantasy midfielder to be caught offside on more occasions than Salah.

As was the case in 2017/18, Salah dominated on the underlying attacking statistics front.

No FPL midfielder had more goal attempts, shots in the box, efforts on target, big chances or penalty box touches than the Egyptian last season.

Salah was ranked tenth among Fantasy midfielders for key passes and joint-third for big chances created.

Salah was generally a more consistent and explosive performer at Anfield but the home and away split was less pronounced than with Mane.

There was only one double-digit return against a “big six” side, meanwhile, with Salah blanking in seven of his ten league appearances against the top half-dozen clubs.

Season Recap

Salah’s 21-point haul against Bournemouth was his biggest score of the season

Salah was Mr Consistency at Anfield in the opening few months of the campaign, registering attacking returns in five of his first six home league matches (the exception being the 0-0 draw with Manchester City in Gameweek 8).

There wasn’t the same output on the road: a brace of assists at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2 being followed by blanks in four of Liverpool’s next five away matches.

Salah recorded 15 double-digit hauls in 2017/18 but there was only one return of 10+ points in the first 15 Gameweeks of the season just gone, with the Egyptian involved in three of Liverpool’s goals in the 4-1 win over Cardiff in late October.

Liverpool’s talisman was certainly ticking by after the first four months of the season, averaging exactly six FPL points per match, but the explosive returns were few and far between.

That all changed in December and January, with Salah banking six double-digit hauls in the space of eight Gameweeks.

A hat-trick and three bonus points against Bournemouth in Gameweek 16 was the high point of Salah’s FPL season, while there were three successive 12-point returns in Gameweeks 18 to 20 and another brace of double-digit hauls at the beginning of 2019.

Just over a third of Salah’s FPL points for 2018/19 were scored in this eight-Gameweek period.

Salah’s timely 19 points against Huddersfield in Gameweek 36, when many Fantasy managers were deploying their Triple Captain chip, turned out to be his only double-digit haul in the final 15 Gameweeks of the season, however.

A run of one attacking return in six matches from Gameweeks 24 to 29 represented Salah’s leanest spell of the season, although the Egyptian bounced back to some extent with five goals, four assists and only two blanks in the final nine Gameweeks of 2018/19.

Ownership

Salah’s ownership peaked in Gameweek 26 for the home match against Bournemouth

The £4.0m starting price hike wasn’t a deterrent to many Fantasy managers as Salah started the season in just under 2.5 million squads, with that figure almost reaching three million in Gameweek 4 before a run of five successive Gameweeks in which the Egypt international suffered a net transfer loss.

Salah’s price and ownership bottomed out in Gameweek 9, with the-then £12.8m-rated Egyptian remaining in just under 1.7 million FPL teams.

Salah’s ownership and price never dropped below two million and £13.0m respectively from Gameweek 10 onwards, however.

The Egyptian’s aforementioned purple patch in December and January saw his ownership steadily increase for six successive Gameweeks, only for the subsequent dry spell to coincide when Salah’s ownership (over three million) and price (£13.6m) were at their highest.

The final seven Gameweeks of the season saw Salah’s ownership hover between the 2-2.5 million mark, with his price settling at £13.2m in Gameweek 38.

The Prospects

Salah will play for Egypt this summer in the Africa Cup of Nations, which may have consequences in the Premier League

While Salah again finished as the top-scoring Fantasy asset of 2018/19, the Egyptian wasn’t streets ahead of Hazard, Sterling and Mane and there perhaps should be questions over whether the Liverpool man should be priced at £2.0m more than his fellow premium midfielders next season.

A narrowing of the gap may come in the form of a price rise for Sterling et al but Salah could feasibly be moved down to £12.5m if FPL are feeling generous, given that the Egypt international scored 44 fewer points last season than he did in 2017/18.

A positional change in FPL looked on the cards given that Salah spent much of the middle third of the season playing as a central striker but the Egyptian’s run of starts on the right flank from Gameweek 25 onwards may mean that he has a stay of execution as a Fantasy midfielder for another season at least.

Salah’s form as a winger is another matter, however: in 25 starts on the right flank, the Egyptian only recorded one double-digit haul (versus relegated Huddersfield in Gameweek 36).

There are two other topics of debate concerning Salah that we also mentioned in our Team of the Season article on Mane.

The first is the Egyptian’s role as deputy penalty-taker at Liverpool.

James Milner (£5.6m) is the Reds’ first-choice option for spot-kicks but how much of a part the veteran midfielder, who turns 34 midway through 2019/20, will play next season remains to be seen, with Naby Keita (£7.4m) showing form towards the end of 2018/19 and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.4m) returning to fitness.

VAR is being deployed for the first time in the Premier League next season and there may well be positive ramifications for those players who are taking penalties for their clubs, such as Salah – although the impact of video technology on other top-flight divisions across Europe hasn’t been as marked as it was at the World Cup last summer.

There are some cynics who would also argue that Liverpool wouldn’t have been awarded a handful of their penalties last season, had VAR already been in operation.

One final consideration for the first few weeks of next season is Salah’s involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations this summer.

The four-week-long competition, which is being held in Salah’s native country, starts on June 21 and finishes on July 19.

Should bookies’ favourites Egypt progress to the last four of the competition, then they will have played seven competitive matches over the summer ending with a final or third-place play-off in mid-July – three weeks before the start of the Premier League season.

There may, therefore, be some understandable concern over Salah’s match-readiness come Gameweek 1 in 2019/20.

Salah not worth 13M imo. He has been good this season, but not anywhere as good as his first. 12M should be fair but knowing FPL, he is going to be priced at least 13M again. With Mane, Sterling, Aguero, Auba, Kane and co all probably 12M+ next season we would look at defenders as the value options. 4-4-2 could be the answer, or even 4-5-1 formation.

Salah is one of the best, if not the best, player in the PL.

But for me he didn't live up to his £13.0m price tag. Sterling was a better pick for the captaincy this season (had a higher PPG). And Mane, Hazard, Sterling all offered better value than Salah.

I can't think of any players recently (last 5 seasons) who have been priced at £12.0m or above who have lived up to their price tag over the season to be honest. With these highly price players it seems you need to know when to hop on and hop off.

According to Fix all the top 50 sides last season had a premium striker. Given that they were poorish value then you’d assume they just got the hopping bit right and hit Auba Kane and Kun at the right time.

There seem to be a few around who are looking at going light up front next season. The alternative strategy is to reserve transfers for premium strikers and mids. Half of Kun and Kane even at top value could yet be great value.

Surely he has to be reclassified as a forward..... It would be interesting to see his heatmap over the season compared to Aguero’s and Kane’s

I hope he is reclassified as a forward.

I have a feeling with Kun's age that his minutes will be managed next year, but expect Salah to be nailed. Depending on price, might go Salah & 2 cheaper forwards up front - that also hopefully frees up a slot in midfield.

I don't think Mane will be worth it next year if his price inflates close to Salah price, Salah's stats were much better throughout the year. Will probably go Salah , TAA, Robbo as a Liverpool trio if he is reclassified.

I personally don't think that's likely - but yeah, looks like Mane/Salah + TAA + Robbo will be pretty popular at the start

You’d then be looking at Mane getting cs and extra point goal bonus. I’m with you on thinking he’ll outscore Mane next season but less certain he’d outpoint him if reclassified.

Just wondering, who is the most expensive promoted player in fpl historically?
Plus - has there ever been a 4m forward from the off?

"Salah isn't worth 13.0" - in the sense that over a season there are players who provided better season-long value for money. So what? Is that representative of how the game is played? Do we not have free transfers, wildcards and a captaincy option? I seriously hate this superficial nonsense, I bet every successful team owned him at one point or another.

Kick in the chops for me. Owned him for the first 15 game weeks, got rid in 16 on WC.

Naturally Salah went on a goalfest from that point on.

Agreed but his price point was still a problem.

With no one much within shouting range it was tricky to switch him in and out. Also I suspect I wasn’t the only one who captained him far more often than his form warranted - 13 mill is hard to ignore.

No, more in the sense that there were only two double-digit hauls in the first/last 15 GWs and that he only posted one of his eight 10+ point returns when starting on the right (where he will presumably feature next season). I even said in the piece above, "starting 2018/19 at £13.0m in FPL, Salah was never likely to scoop any award for best-value Fantasy asset". Of course, the question of whether he's a staple of your FPL team throughout the season or someone just to pile on at certain stages can be asked of any player. Managers will have owned - and will continue to own - the likes of Mane, Salah, Aguero and Sterling at various stages throughout the season, dipping in and out where necessary. I think it's a valid point to raise Salah's price going into next season though and whether he has to be a semi-permanent fixture in Fantasy teams: the guy who won the thing didn't own him from GW5-22 and missed out on the deluge of points over Xmas but finished miles ahead regardless.

I didn't actually read the article, I'm just addressing the general stuff that people spout in debates over his value. Whether he's a viable asset next season isn't just dependent on his own price/designation (although I assume he'll stay as mid) but on the other options and their prices etc.

Agreed - think he'll stay as a mid, too. An early sea of blue on the Season Ticker for Liverpool and, for example, a premature exit for Egypt at the AFCON (not that I think that will happen) and he's hot property again.

Andre Russel is in form of his life so he should be in the team instead of Holder
I'd fit Yuzvendra chahal in the team too.

Agreed on above regarding Russell, and India don't have a game in Round 1 & SA in Round 2 - so would take India out for now.

Have a look at Ben Crellin on Twitter also, he's done a spreadsheet of the high scoring grounds. That's why I've included West Indies & Pakistan in my team.

What's the deal with chips here?
If i captain say imran tahir..Can I use two chips on him in the first round?
      The bowler one vs england
Then the triple captain one vs bangladesh?

If that's the case...will he get 4x for each wicket vs england since the bowler chip doubles his wicket points then captain means 2x2=4

Looks like they've changed the chip rules a bit. Sounds like it applies to all the players in that match(except the triple captain chip) and not just one player. Good change as the previous rule meant u simple had to captain a bowler

Didn't own salah after week five and whilst there was a lot of worry every week I think it was a good decision. A good player and asset for sure but not cost effective. Avoiding highly owned players is definitely risky, but when you think you can get it right it's also a great opportunity.

    Salah 12
    Sterling 11.5
    Mane 11

This would be fair. But knowing FPL's usual overpricing, I'm expecting him to be 12.5 minimum. No one in their right mind believes Salah is worth more than 1m more than Mane.

Last season, before the prices were announced, I posted that Kane should be 11 (same as Aguero), and everyone disagreed with me. There seems to be a tendency to overestimate. Some even said that Arnie at 7 would be a steal. Quite often, there isn't a need to increase prices.

Salah scored 12.5% more points than Mané his season, so easily justifies 1.0m - 1.5m more next year, as long as he isn’t reclassified to a forward

He’s one of the most (and well on the way to being THE most) prolific players ever to be available in the game

561 points in his last 74 appearances (give or take my maths) is just off the charts in terms of productivity

This season though many were frustrated with him as they missed his hauls at bourenmouth & the TC v Huddersfield

I concur. Goal conversion of 16.1% (2018) vs 22.2% (2017). A 22% goal conversion for the 18/19 season would have resulted in 30 goals. He did see a decline of big chance opportunities this season. I wonder why that is, especially when LIV created an identical amount of big chance opportunities for the 17/18 and the 18/19 season.

Total points isn't the only factor. Auba outscored Aguero, yet Aguero was far more popular. Why? Because he delivered more when we expected him to.

Salah's cheaper alternative Mane kept up with him during most parts of the season, including one part where Salah was in poor form and Mane was outscoring him. He was just as explosive as a captain too and arguably more reliable. He's also scored lesser points as a result of playing lesser minutes. While lesser minutes is a recurring factor with the likes of Sterling at Man City, Mane's minutes could be higher or lower next season than this season, we can't really know.

The only way Salah can represent value is if his price is close to Mane's. 1m will suffice.

Auba & Aguero played for different teams though?

When you have two players, in the same FPL position, on the FPL same team, and one of them has an absolutely superb season (Mane) and the other player then goes and outscores that superb season by 30 points/12.5% - that's a hell of a price difference

Overpricing players in this game is rarely an issue. I think Salah was underpriced moving into this season. Once again he became the runaway top FPL scorer. The question mark regarding Salah was whether he could be a consistent FPL option without relying on form. He just proved that he can. In FPL you pay for both ceiling and consistency. Last season Salah proved his ceiling, this season he proved his consistency. I can accept a drop to 12.5, but anything less is just absurd.

Let's not forget that Salah had incredible competition this season. Liverpool's defence was massively underpriced and setting new FPL records. Mané, Hazard and Sterling averaged more than 6.4 PPM as premium midfield options. Salah still managed to be owned by more than 1/3 of the game in almost every round. With Hazard gone, and Liverpool's other options appropriately priced, Salah should be an even better option next season.

I might as well throw in all my judgements so you have a better overview of how I would price players.

          Midfield :

          Salah 13.0
          Sterling 12.5
          Mané 11.5
          KdB 10.0
          Son 9.5
          Sané 9.5
          Eriksen 9.0
          Pogba 9.0
          Alli 8.5
          Silva 8.5
          Bernardo 8.0
          Martial 8.0
          Özil 7.5
          Sigurdsson 7.5
          Zaha 7.5
          Willian/Pulisic 7.0
          Jota 7.0
          Fraser 7.0
          Richarlison 7.0
          Anderson 7.0
          Deulofeu 6.5

          Attack:

          Agüero 12.0
          Kane 11.5
          Aubameyang 11.0
          Lacazette 10.0
          Jesus 9.5
          Firmino 9.5
          Lukaku 9.0
          Vardy 9.0
          Rashford 8.5
          Giroud 8.0
          Wilson 7.5
          Jimenez 7.0
          Arnautovic 7.0
          King 6.5
          Perez 6.5
          Rondon 6.5
          RCL 6.5
          Wood 6.0
          Deeney 6.0

You must have a lot of time on your hands.

Hold on. Sterling started at 11 this season. He scored practically the same points this season as the season before, with the same PPM. And his price never even rose to 12 this season. So why in the world would you increase it from 11 to 12.5? If you keep overpricing everyone, the game is only going to be less fun.

Agreed. Sterling should be 12 max. I'd say 11.5.

The existence of Salah, Hazard, Sterling and Mané kept the prices of each other in check. Are you also going to claim that Mané should only be 0.3 more expensive than last season?

                I couldn't, since he ended up 0.8 more, not 0.3 😉

K, so you decided to cling on to one point of mine and ignore the rest. So take that out. He scored the same points with the same PPM as the season before. So why the 1.5 increase?

I agree with the increase on two fronts :

              1. Sterling is more nailed than he was 12 months ago. There was more rotation, now he's the main man which increases his captaincy potential as well.

              2. No Hazard means other premiums need to increase in price or everyone will end up with the same side. Can you imagine how many teams will have Mane, Sterling, Salah if the prices stayed the same?

                1. He played 186 minutes more than the season before. Roughly two 90-minute games. He did not start 7 games this season. Hardly convincing. Something closer to 3000 minutes would've been convincing. I have put him at 11.5, which is a 0.5 increase.

                2. I never said the prices should stay the same. Check my post. I increased the prices of Sterling and Mane. Just not as much as Ramboros did.

Form is temporary. Class is permanent. Any seasoned FPL manager will know that there's plenty of players that only performed well for one season. When Kane had his breakthrough season he only saw his price rise to 9.5 after scoring 21 goals and having 7 assists in 2500 minutes. He then scored 25 goals and had 3 assists in 3300 minutes. A worse performance led to a price hike of 11.0. Why? Because you establish yourself as a class player and FPL asset by performing over several seasons.

                • 7 Years
                4 years, 10 months ago

Well, duh, when you score 25 goals and 3 assists at a price of 9.5, there's a lot of room for a price hike. Similar to Mane this season, who got a similar return and will be jumping from 9.5 to 11+. But when you're already at 11+, it doesn't feel as necessary because they're more likely to feel overpriced when the season goes on.

Consistent performances over seasons should be rewarded, sure, but the prices are set by trying to estimate what the players will get the following season as well. Sterling got around 230 points two seasons in a row and will still be a rotation threat because City have 4 good wingers and it's Pep. Unless you think he's going to get a lot, lot more this season, I don't see how it warrants a 1.5 increase. Of course, this is all a matter of opinion, so let's just agree to disagree.

                4 years, 10 months ago

Also, if you keep increasing the prices for consistent performances, by your logic, if he gets 230 points next season as well, you would increase it from 12.5 to 14 in the next season. There should be a point where you stop and just look at points per million as well. It can't keep increasing beyond a point.

What happened to Sterling is the exact opposite of what you are describing. People asked themselves questions rather than just looking at PPM to avoid pricing him higher than 11.0. Did Sterling go into last season as a nailed on player? Was Sterling nailed on while he was performing? Was Sterling one of City's best players? Did City end up signing another winger before this season? Did Sterling play 7 games at the World Cup without scoring a single goal?

This season was the season Sterling ended up in TOTY and as a runner up in POTY. This was the year Sterling managed to score a hat trick for his country and the season he quadrupled his international goal tally. This was the year where Mahrez's presence and Jesus's injury free status didn't dent his playtime by a minute.

Lastly I wonder what the heck you are smoking if you think 6.9 PPM is worthy of anything less than 12.5.

They must be confident that Arsenal Defense will show how sh.t it is 😀
But, Chelsea aren't too good attacking wise too.

Big plus for gunners imo is they have goalscorers in their team, whereas Chelsea is one man team (imo) + Manager loves EL than anything in this world 😀
