Why Fantasy managers will miss Hazard next season

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (£11.0m) completes the midfield in our Team of the Season for 2018/19.

The Belgian enjoyed his best return of Fantasy Premier League points (238) in seven top-flight seasons for the Blues in what looks likely to have been his last.

He finished the campaign as the second highest points-scorer in the game behind only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£13.2m). Not bad for a so-called Fantasy ‘troll’.

Despite being the second-best performer this season, Hazard just about made it into the Team of the Season with 12.14% of the vote, less than the other midfielders who made the cut; Sadio Mané (£10.3m), Salah, Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) and Ryan Fraser (£6.4m).

THE STATISTICS

Hazard recorded his best-ever FPL score in 2018/19

Hazard’s 16 goals equalled his previous best tally from 2016/17 when Chelsea won the league. On top of his goals, he chipped in with 15 Fantasy assists, a number only Sterling could beat (16).

The Belgian benefited from Chelsea’s solid defensive displays too, picking up 12 clean sheet points. He behaved himself on the pitch too, receiving just two yellow cards.

Hazard has been a bonus points magnet during his time in the league and it was no different in 2018/19. He racked up more than any other player in the game (35) which included the maximum three on nine separate occasions. His score of 35 in this area was his highest tally since picking up 42 in 2014/15.

His 6.4 points-per-match was bettered only by Sterling (6.9) and Salah (6.8).

Hazard registered a massive 1,791 touches in the final third, 474 more than Sterling who ranked second among midfielders.

Over the course of the season, the Chelsea man created 97 chances for his team-mates. Only Leicester’s James Maddison (£6.6m) fashioned more (99).

The Belgian also ranked third among midfielders for both penalty area touches (240) and goal attempts (93).

In terms of expected assists (xA), Hazard’s figure of 10.00 was beaten by just one other midfielder, Fraser with 10.21.

SEASON RECAP

Hazard’s season got properly started after a few Gameweeks

Following a run to the World Cup semi-finals with Belgium during the summer, Hazard didn’t start Chelsea’s first two matches of the season but still managed to get an assist in each of them from the bench.

He then had his best spell of the campaign, scoring 66 points from Gameweek 3 to Gameweek 8. Seven goals and one assist in six games which included his only hat trick of 2018/19 in the 4-1 win over Cardiff in Gameweek 5. He picked up all three bonus points in that game on his way to a sweet 20-pointer for his owners.

After that purple patch, he didn’t find the back of the net again until Gameweek 17, but he did provide five assists in between.

The brace away at Watford in Gameweek 19 was another highlight for those who backed him. He then didn’t score again until Gameweek 25 against Huddersfield, another double in a 5-0 win for Sarri’s charges.

Hazard registered another two double-digit hauls back-to-back in Gameweek’s 32 and 33, a goal and assist against Brighton and a brace in the 2-0 win at home to West Ham, one of which was a contender for goal of the season.

In all, Hazard registered an impressive 11 double-digit Gameweek’s. Predicting when they were going to come was the hard part which has always been the case with him, making it still quite hard to trust him with the captaincy.

He finished the season with two assists and two bonus points in the 3-0 win over Watford in Gameweek 37 and was benched for the final game against Leicester, playing just 21 minutes.

OWNERSHIP

Hazard was a popular man in FPL this season

Hazard was reasonably priced at £10.5m at the start of the season but wasn’t highly owned going into Gameweek 1 off the back of his World Cup exploits.

Just 480,326 managers included him in their squad for the opening Gameweek with many foreseeing that he would be eased back in after a long summer.

Following Gameweek 1, Hazard’s ownership increased week on week for the next eight Gameweek’s. During his hot streak from Gameweek’s 3 to 8, managers rushed to get him in.

By Gameweek 9, he was in 2,938,961 teams, a huge increase on the Gameweek 1 figure. The Belgian’s price shot up to £11.4m during this period too.

Gameweek 9 proved to be the peak for his ownership and price as his form dipped a little bit after that resulting in sales. Sitting out Gameweek 10 and managing just 26 minutes in Gameweek 11 was a factor as well.

By Gameweek 16, his price had dropped to £10.9m and he’d lost almost a million owners since Gameweek 9 but big performances against Brighton (Gameweek 17) and Watford (Gameweek 19) seen his price and ownership start to rise again.

Hazard finished the season with 27.2% ownership and a price of £11.0m.

THE PROSPECTS

Hazard looks to have played his last game for Chelsea

Sadly, it looks like we are going to lose one of 2018/19’s best FPL assets this summer.

Hazard was asked after the Europa League final win over Arsenal what was going to happen, and he replied by saying ‘I think it’s a goodbye’. If we want to own him next season, we might have to start playing La Liga Fantasy with him being heavily linked to Real Madrid.

If nothing happens in the summer and Hazard finds himself still at Stamford Bridge come August, he will again be a viable option for our teams although we would expect him to cost more than the £10.5m price tag he was given last year.

If Hazard does leave, it could open the door for some of the other Chelsea midfielders to become more productive FPL assets. Pedro (£6.2m) and Willian (£7.1m) will be worth considering if the deal does go through.

Chelsea are banned from signing any new players for the next two transfer windows so there won’t be any new additions for us to choose from in FPL aside from Christian Pulisic who has been on loan at Borussia Dortmund and any other players who return from their respective loan spells.

Article clearly shows that Hazard isn't a troll, you just obviously expect too much from players in your team if you're complaining about the second highest point scorer in the game. That or you don't understand the concept of fantasy football and are trying to change your team week in week out constantly.

I don’t think you understand what being trolled in FPL means.

And I’ve had 7 top-10k finishes so far, so I reckon I’m probably doing alright at this fantasy football malarkey overall.

But thanks for your input! 🙂

and what's wrong with that? both Hazard and Sterling had poor spells - you need to have these players at the right times, I'd be pretty confident that the overall winner didn't have Hazard and/or Sterling for the whole season

Agreed that you want them at the right times.

However, after they have just scored big for three-four weeks isn’t usually the best time. No-one keeps up a scoring run like that unless your last seasons Salah.

For what it’s worth Adam had Sterling from GW7 and he only left during chip season. I’d keep Sterling all season myself.

The overall winner had Sterling for 27 game-weeks, his 5th most-owned player after Alexander-Arnold, Fabianski and Wan-Bissaka (32 each) and Robertson (28).

He only had Hazard for 14 game-weeks, captaining him twice and averaging 9.7 points (20.0 points as captain and 7.8 as non-captain) for the 13 matches in which he didn't bench him.
Apart from Sterling, Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, the only players to score more points for him were his two most frequent captains, Aguero and Salah. Certainly not a troll for him!

Hazard didn't troll anyone, but some managers may have trolled themselves by captaining or selling him at the wrong times!

"Form is temporary but class is permanent". The overall winner held on to a number of players that he believed in through their poor spells, and in the long run they rewarded him for it.

if you're going to look at it like that, no player ever trolls anyone..

People take players out/bring them in at different times, it's not hard to see that he could 'troll' someone (basically owning him for lean spells and missing his hauls, which is what I thought that term meant). I bet there's someone out there that got him GW9-16, sold and then got him again 20-29

I think biggest things that contributed to the Troll legend is that you don’t know who Hazard will score against.

He was always quite capable of scoring big against an Everton or the like then blanking a home game against relegation fodder.

And those were usually the games he was highly captained in so it’s remembered more by our community.

I guess the thing I learned was never captain Hazard as a sure thing. Cap him in the weeks when all of Him, Salah and Sterling have an meh fixture. So I never felt trolled once I accepted this.

Some players you can buy and sell according to form and fixtures.
Others you just have to keep or avoid. Players like Hazard will score well for you if you show them patience, you just don't know when they're going to get a big haul and when they're going to blank.

Actually, I think some managers are far worse trolls than any players, when they suddenly bench or rest good players without warning.

As a Palace fan I’m itching for us to sign Rondon especially if we can shift Benteke onto China. He should suit our game brilliantly.

It would also be neat for fantasy as without checking I’m fairly sure Zaha is a better option when he has someone in the middle - his late run certainly coincided with Bat’s arrival. Left to himself he often goes up blind allies. He and Rondon could be really decent budget options playing together.

Toby Alderweireld CB - £25m release clause. Koulibaly & Maguire will be too expensive, De Ligt seems unrealistic.
Thomas Meunier RB - Contract expires next season, apparently wants out. Wan-Bissaka would be nice too.
Nicolas Pépé IF - Quick left-footed inside-forward. Think he'd be perfect.

A ST, DM & CM is needed too. So... lots...

Hopefully Plymouth can get back into League 1 with these signings.

Obviously can't see him moving to Arsenal but Alderweireld would be a good start, then one of Ziyech/Zaha/Fraser to enable a return to 4231 (Auba on the left or just rotating with Laca) Ozil #10

        Auba Ozil Ziyech
        Xhaka Torreira

Sakho of interest? He looks like a top 6 defender to me. Seem to recall he was decent at Liverpool before he fell out with Klopp.

He feels a much more likely transfer out from Palace than either Zaha or AWB. He could go for a value sum and not the penalty sums being asked for for the other two. There are no local ties and the principle financial pressure is the wage bill - and he’s a big offender there.

West Ham. Would you like to see a decent midfielder alongside rice who can keep possession and pick a pass (Andre Gomes has been mentioned so far), an overall striking upgrade depending on who leaves. Ideally upgrading full backs soon and possibly an ogbonna replacement if that's not too greedy. Lots of dead wood out too (Hugill, Byram, Reid etc.).

      Southampton. Obviously.
Itching for a CB to partner Bednarek, but one linked yet as of now. Linked with Djenepo, and we could reignite our interest from January in Genk RB Joakim Maehle, but so far we havent approached them in the Summer.

      Gunn
      Valery Bednarek (new CB) Bertrand
      Hojbjerg Lemina
JWP Redmond(who'll drift centrally as a no. 10 at times)
      Ings Djenepo

McCarthy Maehle Vestergaard Long Romeu Boufal Slattery

If the squad gels together in preseason, I'm expecting a top 10 finish. But of course, other teams are improving too, which is worry.

Is it time to triple up on liverpool next year?

Is Joe Gomez the alternative that will make the difference?

Even at 7.0m a piece, Robertson and TAA would represent amazing value if they repeated what they did last season. So it seems likely I'll start with those two. If there are even better bargains elsewhere, like a 5.5m Digne or something, I might reconsider, but I doubt anyone will match their value.

So I'm likely forced between Salah and Mane for the last spot. Again depends on prices, but I know which one I'd feel more comfortable captaining in an easy home game...

Anyone see that story about the lad dropping trou in Italy?

Year ban from football and head of the federation there want it increased.

I can’t help shake the feeling that if Ronaldo had done it that would only be an 8 game ban or something.

Look at how racism is treated, supporters (if that’s the right word) get lifetime bans but players get a month or two then come back no worries.

Gives you points options in both areas though. Always a good chance Windies will bat the full 50 against better teams, he'll always be good for 2 wickets and a 50 usually.

60 odd wickets in 50 odd matches argues otherwise.

Bowling rewards may be high but they are deeply unpredictable in ODIs. A good case in point s how Archer went in the warm up matches - an odd wicket here or there despite bowling great.

Also worth noting for future that Trent Bridge is the highest scoring ODI ground in world cricket - typically it’s the ground to avoid when you’re picking bowlers.

    2018/19 GW32 - Aguero - 30 (10x3)
    2017/18 GW37 - Sterling - 9 (3x3)
    2016/17 GW36 - Sanchez - 42 (14x3)
    2015/16 GW37 - Hazard - 36 (12x3)

      Martial 9*3 = 27
      Sanchez 25*3 = 75 (or was it 72 ??)
      Kane 10*3 = 30
      Andddd
      Sane this season.
      Bumper 1*3 = 3 !!

That Sanchez haul was 27 points, I captained him during my bench boost for 54 points (GW Score of 169). So it would've been 81 on TC.

Only downside was the same gameweek Kane scored 31 points, so would've been 91 on a TC.

        That week was mega!

Incidentally what was your 2016/17 GW37 score? I bench boosted that week and ended up on 169 points. I imagine you surpassed that with Sanchez TC?

Can’t actually remember mine. The chip is overrated. Remember the additional points are 10,3,14, etc...

Same difference as making one good or bad transfer where you get/miss a haul. Like when I dropped Doherty for PVA In GW37. Cost me 12 points, same as missing triple cap.

I agree, hence why I have been indifferent about the scores. The chip is only worth something if you are approaching of surpassing 20 points. Otherwise it's a nice perk.

Last two seasons I have only been 10-20 points above the GW average for that week, using the chip. I was especially disappointing that Aguero couldn't play both games this season, but it definitely could've been worse.

Afraid not, I have screenshots of my previous bench boost & triple captain teams from years gone by. I would advise if it's something you want to have moving forward doing the same for whatever gameweeks you want this year before they disappear.

Since no-one averages over 7ppg , I would say that 14x3 in a DGW is a very satisfactory result, and that 3x3 was your only failure.

Some of course will occasionally get lucky with a score of about 20x3, but most seasons most of us won't.

Mine were rather worse than yours:
      Payet 36 (12x3) in 2015/16 GW37
      Aguero 27 (9x3) in 2016/17 GW27
      Jesus 12 (4x3) in 2017/18 GW37
      Sterling 9 (3x3) in 2018/19 GW32.

I suppose you are right, but it also feels like a missed opportunity, especially with Aguero GW32 this season only playing one of the two games that week (definitely could've surpassed 14).

I get what you are saying regarding they seem worse then mine but the idea was there, the last two scores we have both gone for City on the same double gameweeks. I feel that it was more unlucky then anything, any other week both Jesus & Sterling could've hauled. Hindsight and all that, we can't fault the strategy.

Not sure about you but my 2015/16 GW37 midfield all delivered. Hazard (12x3), Payet (12), Firmino (8), Sanchez (8). Only time I've reached 100 with my Triple Captain chip.

          In 2015/16 I got 98 in DGW37 with Payet 12x3, van Aanholt 17 and Defoe 10.
          But I got a higher score in DGW34 - 121 with Bench Boost (Bellerin 8x2, Aguero 26, Kane 13, Milner 11 and Adrian 10).

In 2016/17, DGW37 was an extremely high-scoring game-week, with some managers getting more than 200.
I got 157 then with my Bench Boost (Sanchez 27x2, Kane 31 and Ozil 15).
But I only got 77 when I played my Triple Captain in DGW27 (Aguero 9x3, Mane and Grant 13 each).

In 2017/18 my only century was in GW20 without the aid of any chips, and it wasn't even a DGW! (Kane 17x2, Coutinho 13, Azpilicueta 12 and Sterling 11).
My Triple Captain in DGW37 only brought me 69 points and Bench Boost in DGW34 90.

In 2018/19 I actually managed to get 3 centuries, none of which were using chips or in DGWs:
          104 in GW1 (Salah 8x2, Mane 16, Mendy 15, Richarlison 14, and Robertson and Alonso 11 each).
          110 in GW2 (Aguero 20x2, Alonso 13 and Mane 10).
          And 119 in GW36 (Mane 13x2, Wilson 16, Robertson 14 and Vardy 13).
But my Triple Captain in DGW32 only brought me 76 points, and my Bench Boost in DGW35 only 83.

So of my 6 centuries in the past 4 seasons, 2 of them were aided by Bench Boost in DGWs but none of them by Triple Captain - and the other 4 weren't even DGWs!

I think that the Triple Captain chip is far less valuable than the Free Hit and the Wildcards.

That is impressive to hit four centuries in the last two seasons. Especially your GW20 haul from 2017/18. I remember 2017/18 being much less impressive then the two previous seasons in terms of BB/TC so the fact you hit a century is mega.

Also fair play to you getting back to back hauls at the start of the season, I just saw your OR at that time. Seriously impressive!

I've only ever broke 100+ four times to date:

            2015/16 GW34 - 160 (Bench Boost - Aguero (c) 26x2, Gomes 21 & Alli 15)
            2015/16 GW37 - 101 (Hazard 12x3, Payet 12 & Deeney 12)
            2016/17 GW37 - 169 (Bench Boost - Sanchez (c) 27x2, Kane 31 & Jesus 19) (Jakupovic, Ranocchia & Gabbiadini all scored 0 this GW)
            2018/19 GW36 - 101 (No Chip - Robertson (c) 14x2, Wilson 16 & Mane 13)

I agree with you in terms of chip importance. TC is only significant if you are captaining a player who scores 20+. Otherwise it's a minor perk.

      2018/19 GW36 - Mane - 39 (13x3)
      2017/18 GW37 - Sterling - 9 (3x3)
      2016/17 GW27 - Aguero - 27 (9x3)
      2015/16 GW37 - Payet - 36 (12x3)

Pretty satisfied with that. Over 9 points on average (trebled). Interesting that my best performance was by a single gameweeker!

Great result there with your most recent score. I've had a very similar to you with those scores. Double digit is the minimum to consider the chip well used, whereas 20+ is the aim. Most of your choices have been aiming for the 20+ score (I know the Sterling pick was as I also went there). Hopefully we both get closer next year.

Would love to, but the bench is important, and there are no starting forwards for 4.5 or 5.0.

Having a 5.5 bench-warmer means a 1.0m loss from the XI. So the decreased value from forwards gets negated with that 1.0m sat on the bench.

Happy with a non starting 4.5 forward. The 2 strikers and 5th mid will rotate to play 2/3 every week is the plan and the rest are premiums. Seems solid to me.

        Digne (6.0) over Laporte (6.5) imo 😉

And that team is not affordable. Something like this could work if you wanted 3 big defenders:

        4.5 - 4.5
        7.0 - 6.5 - 6.0 - 4.5 - 4.0
        12.5 - 12.0 - 6.5 - 6.0 - 4.5
        7.5 - 7.5 - 6.5

I'm wondering if this would work :

          4.5 - 4.5
          7.0 - 6.5 - 6.5 - 6.0 - 4.5
          11.5 - 12.5 - 8 - 5.5 - 4.5
          7.5 - 6.0 - 5.0

          2 x interchanging GK's
          Robbo/TAA/Laporte/Digne and a cheap bargain
Sterling/Salah/Siggy with a Fraser type bargain with a fodder
2 x Jimenez quality forwards along with one fodder that could play

Anyone around playing ICC fantasy. Checking other teams in FFS league there is just no consistency with scores. ie leader gets 60 pts for Phuhlukwayo as a VC. Should be score plus a half? I get 28 pts so VC should be 42pts not 60. ,Am I missing something ? Have noticed different scores for other non chip players also. Will chuck it in soon , seems a f.up

The bowler chip applies to all the wickets your players take in a match. The batting one applies to all the players you own that hit a boundary in that game

Based on this the scores will vary
