Brazil and Argentina’s FPL stars toil at Copa America

Several key Fantasy Premier League assets competing in the Copa America endured tough times in their latest matches.

Both Brazil and Argentina recorded less than encouraging results as the South American competition moved into the second phase of the Group Stages.

Copa America

Brazil 0-0 Venezuela

Five Premier League players were on the receiving end of boos and jeers as Brazil drew 0-0 with Venezuela at the Copa America.

After toiling in their 3-0 win over Bolivia, it was more of the same from a Selecao side still led in attack by Roberto Firmino in the absence of Neymar.

The Liverpool forward did actually put the ball in the back of the net in Brazil’s second match of the tournament but had it ruled out by referee Julio Bascunan.

Richarlison held his place in the starting line-up, this time on the right flank of attacking midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation, while Alisson was in goal.

Fernandinho was dropped to the bench after starting the opener against Bolivia but came on for the second half in Casemiro’s place.

Gabriel Jesus emerged as a half-time substitute, coming on for Richarlison, but arguably cost his side the three points.

Former Liverpool man Philippe Coutinho had put the ball in the net but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) pulled it back because of a Jesus foul in the build-up.

Brazil now have four points on the board in Group A, and lead Peru only on goal difference.

In order to progress they need simply to avoid defeat against them later this week.

Colombia 1-0 Qatar

There was another 90 minutes for both Davinson Sánchez and Yerry Mina as Colombia won Group B and progressed to the Copa America quarter-finals.

After keeping out Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the opening round of matches, the Premier League centre-back pairing registered another shutout in this narrow win over Qatar.

Argentina 1-1 Paraguay

With Aguero used only as a substitute, Messi and co. continue to struggle in Brazil

Sergio Aguero was left on the bench as Argentina continued to struggle at the Copa America.

Having already lost to Colombia, they were forced to salvage a point against Paraguay, with Messi scoring from the penalty spot.

Aguero did not come on until half-time but did add some much-needed threat.

The Manchester City forward replaced Watford’s Roberto Pereyra at half-time, who had been deployed on the right wing of a 4-4-2 formation.

Aguero’s colleague Nicolas Otamendi started the game at centre-back and nearly cost Argentina a point.

Five minutes after Messi had levelled things up, he fouled Derlis González in the penalty box and conceded a penalty.

Goalkeeper Franco Armani made the save from González to keep Argentina’s hopes alive.

However, it is clear that much improvement is needed for Messi’s side if they are to remain in Brazil much longer.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Miguel Almirón started at number 10 for Paraguay and provided the assist for Richard Sánchez’s goal.

After West Ham’s Fabian Balbuena started the disappointing 2-2 draw with Qatar, he was left on the bench against Argentina.

CONCACAF Gold Cup

USA 4-0 Guyana

Christian Pulisic was the only Premier League asset involved for the USA as they recorded a routine win over Guyana at the Gold Cup.

He entertained the crowd with some skill in the early stages but neither he nor his colleagues created a great deal in the first half other than Paul Arriola’s 28th-minute opener.

A pair of quick-fire goals after half-time saw head coach Gregg Berhalter brought Pulisic off in the 63rd minute with the score at 3-0.

UEFA U21 Championship

England U21 1-2 France U21

Dean Henderson saved two penalties for England Under-21s

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson was the hero for England Under-21s even as they lost in cruel circumstances to France on Tuesday night.

In their first game of the UEFA Under-21s Championship, Phil Foden, hoping to have a breakout season at Manchester City in 2019/20 put the Young Lions ahead with a scintillating individual goal.

“I think some of the football was outstanding, and Foden’s goal was a gem.” – Aidy Boothroyd, England U21 manager

As he continues to show promise for the new campaign, his colleague James Maddison also drew attention to himself providing the assist for Foden.

Two penalty saves from Henderson ensured England into a winning position heading into stoppage time, increasing FPL interest in him for the new season.

The Manchester United shot-stopper spent 2018/19 on loan at Sheffield United and after his heroics on Tuesday night, Fantasy managers will be hoping Chris Wilder can bring him back to Brammal Lane for the new campaign.

The Blades kept 21 clean sheets on their way to promotion from the Championship, 15 of them coming in the final 22 matches of the campaign.

If Henderson returns to the club, either on loan again or permanently, he could offer a decent £4.5m option, with the added promise of penalty saves in his locker too.

However, it all went wrong for England Under-21s as the game crept into stoppage time.

The popular Aaron Wan-Bissaka had a poor game throughout and was unfortunate enough to miscue a clearance from a 95th-minute corner into his own net after Jonathan Ikone had equalised.

His performance will almost certainly have dampened pre-season FPL interest in the Crystal Palace right-back.

A lot will depend on his price, and there is virtually no chance of him coming in as a £4.0m defender this time around.

His reported transfer to Manchester United could also impact how the FPL game-makers price him too.

If he does make that move before the game launches, with just three attacking returns in 2018/19, joining a team with a worse defensive record will probably remove him from our consideration.

Meanwhile, Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury was sent off in the 63rd minute.

Other Fantasy assets involved for England were Demarai Gray, Dominic Solanke, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tammy Abraham.

England U21 XI (4-3-3): D Henderson; Dasilva, Clarke-Salter, Tomori, Wan-Bissaka; Foden, Choudhury, Maddison; D Gray (Abraham 75′), Solanke (Mount 71′), R Sessegnon (Calvert-Lewin 75′).

International Friendlies

Zambia 1-4 Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast rounded up their preparation for the African Cup of Nations with a morale-boosting win over Zambia.

Serge Aurier and Jonathan Kodjia both featured from the beginning, with the former recording an assist and the latter getting himself on the scoresheet.

Both players came off around the 70-minute mark while Wilfried Zaha only featured as a 53rd-minute substitute.

I'm almost certain Siggy will be the first player in my team. Always been a fan, didn't own him nearly as much as I should of last season, on set pieces and Everton's fixtures look pretty peachy.

I fear a relatively large price tag for him - hopefully not 9.0, but probably 8.5, not sure he’ll get away with 8.0

Everton are intruiging though - particularly both of their fullbacks imo - good fixtures and cracking defensive form at the end of last season

If they keep Gueye I think they’ll definitely be worth investing in, possibly at both ends of the pitch

Yeah I think Digne's ownership will be high, and it's probably justified but as others have pointed out; Coleman might be a good pick again this season.

Love Siggy as a fantasy asset. Didn't own him at all last season due to Richarlison being cheaper but definitely plan to have him at some point this year if his price isn't too high.

        Waiting on prices

Suspect I’ll go Rich first as he has that early season record. Is it just the sun on his back?

Siggy is very much on my watchlist though but reckon he’ll be at least 8.5. That’s the sort of price that I guess will be squeezed by premium defence.

I’ll be awaiting prices, unfortunately considering his best campaign I think you’ll be looking at 8m plus, higher then he’s ever been.

Ones for me to monitor are Calvert Lewis (seemed to grow in the role, could be a good price), Richardson again for a few goals, Digne and Coleman pending prices and also Gueye’s transfer speculation.

I’m not totally convinced. I had him in the draft game for much of last season and although he got a few points, he blanked loads too.

Digne took a few set pieces off him too and his pens weren’t very good.

He's a great nostalgia pick, think people like the idea of picking him, but there end up being better options.

Brazil are such a strange team, they have quality in literally every position, can play a number of formations, have strength in depth, yet they play so poorly. Imagine what a Pep, Klopp, Poch, could do with them?

On a side note, I still can’t believe that no team plays Coutinho at number 10. I know I’m biased but the guy is a magician.

Number 10 role appears to be fairly dead. Almost all creative players are either played as inverted wide men or false 8s these days.

I mean, Brazil have been the best national team for a while now imo. They have wonderful players, but have backed it up for the most part and been very difficult to beat in recent years.

Since Tite has taken over they have a record of 30 wins, 6 draws and 2 losses, which I'd venture to say is much better than any other national team in that time. That's without even taking into consideration that the level of competition they face in qualifiers is far higher than that of European teams.

That's irrelevant when discussing who the best team is right now. Especially when considering they are in the midst of a major tournament, for which they are favourites. There is no other team that has been nearly as consistent as they have over the past few years. They've conceded only 10 goals in their last 38 games. No team, national or international, can boast anything close to that.

Remove friendlies and then just count results vs the top 15 ranked teams.

Beating El Salvador and Saudi Arabia in friendlies doesn't count.

Against top 15 teams they have 8 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses since Tite took charge, scoring 18 and conceding 7. Those 2 losses being against Argentina, who they beat twice in that timeframe, and Belgium, a game which they dominated for the most part. To your point, I doubt any national team has a better record against top 15 teams in that time.

      Could be

But there again he could end up as the next Micah Richards. He’s got lots of attributes but there’s a world of difference playing in a RH backline at Palace and at United.

Hope he makes it if he goes even if it means Palace lose out on the fee but I don’t see it as a certainty.

I’ve seen Richards mentioned a few times as a comparison & it’s potentially worrying - he looked unstoppable at that age but tailed off horribly - I’m hoping AWB has what it takes though

He didn't tail off horribly he sustained a bad injury and never really got over it. He also suffered from a serious illness and got injured again. Well and truly changed the direction of his career.

I don’t think his career tailing off horribly compared to it’s bright start, and injuries and illnesses are mutually exclusive & I also hope AWB’s career isn’t anything like the Micah Richard’s career

Richards arguably peaked at 21 in the 2008/09 season, his closest to a full season... he played half a season in 09/10, and half a season in 10/11, and two thirds of a season in 11/12, winning a league medal with city at 24... but lost his place to zabaleta the following season & relative to his bright start was pretty much in the football wastelands from then on

A career tailed that tailed off (horribly imo) & hopefully the same is not true of AWB

              • 8 Years
              4 years, 9 months ago

I still believe that the injuries and illness were the fundamental reasons that his career did not fulfill it's full potential. He couldn't train for long periods and due to this as a young player he was never able to fully reach the peak of his ability . There is a big difference between this and tailing off.

Be that as it may, I really hope AWB’s career doesn’t tail off the way Micah Richard’s did and obviously that he also avoids injuries and illnesses

If we’re sitting in 10 years time and AWB’s career is anything like Richards it will be a disaster for Utd, 1 league medal not withstanding

This! Since Fergie left I can’t think of one player who’s signed & exceeded expectations, they either fail miserably or are bang average for their price, long may it continue!

With their transfer ban and subsequent reliance on youth promotion, place your bets on a cheap Chelsea player to start off to a flyer. Mount, Tomori, James, Abraham all in the mix, I reckon.

Mount is well suited to Lampard's style (if you can say he has one, after only one season) but I would expect RLC to be the better option - showed some good goalscoring ability at the end of the season, shame he got injured. If I had to pick anyone that would step up and do their bit to cover that monstrous goalscoring hole left by Hazard, it may well have been him (if he hadn't knackered his achilles)

The problem with the majority of the youth / loan players is that they're still very young and not up to scratch yet.

Mount could do with regular gametime at PL level, which I don't think he'll get at Chelsea this season, so a loan might be needed I think. Same with Tomori.

Reece James is similar, but I really like the idea of him training as an understudy to Azpi with Zappacosta being given the boot - would be a great chance for him to learn.

Tammy could work, again suits the Lampard style - more so than Giroud and Higuain. Will compete with Michy I guess, not sure who'll win out. Not an interest FPL wise yet unless we get some indication that he'll get good minutes at a cheap price, even then I'm still a little concerned about how they'll perform. Fingers crossed.

Zouma and Pulisic the two loanees who could be looking at regular minutes, plus one of Bats or Abraham I guess. Bakayoko could feature again, but Lampard wasn't a fan of him in his last stint, but then again, who was?

A switch to a 3-4-3 would favour the youngsters, but I don't think it's that likely, unless Jorginho disappears off perhaps.

I think they should definitely go back to the Conte 343 if possible - they have 4 pretty good CBs, you get the best out of Alonso and Kante is much better in a 2. I still personally think they will be pretty good, most of their defenders & centre mids would walk into United/Arsenal's teams

Booooo... I can’t help but feel underwhelmed... I was expecting more tbh - but keep going though, you’ve nearly reached a page of comments today - you can do it, we believe in you! 🙂

    MBP
Ignore the haters, I think you’ve put up some quality posts in that last few weeks. That said I think WR first reply back to you could have been accepted and quashed this whole thing (and saved you dealing with FG)

    WR
While I don’t think your original post above is particularly mean or intended to cause hurt it also isn’t helpful. MBP isn’t some troll like Jurgen Flopp or Waxys or one of those that is just shouting for attention. For someone who has spent much of the summer bemoaning the lack of community on here you’ve not been the most civic minded.

    FG
Your actions above have been classic troll, please don’t try to take any kind of moral high-ground. You’re few posts recently have been petty sniping (not just at MBP). I hope you’re future posts are more constructive.

Thank you Lord tanaka for your kind words 🙂

I would have let WR’s reply slide were it not for the fact that he seemed to be insuinuating I post too much - when he himself seemed to have an equivalent post count - his thread added about a page onto my post history lol

You wouldn’t have let it slide, you wouldn’t know how. You always have to have the last word and never accept that you could be wrong. And if you can’t see that you’ve been hammering the forum more than anyone else you are blind. It’s good that you make posts, it’s not good that you drag them on and on by disagreeing with people on everything. To compare with the number of posts I’ve made is just plain stupid, you have made 9 pages in 5 days to my 9 in 14 days. I’m done. Goodnight

I thought the post threshold was 16 pages - Is it 9 now?

If I am hammering the forum with 20 pages of comments (nearly 2 pages of which are from your circus of a thread up there ^^) what are you doing with 17 pages? Is there a verb for slightly less than hammering?

And you can’t expect to post a childish comment like “Has Maximum Boner Pointless gone for fresh air” and not get called on it - if you give it, you have to take it Mr. Rover 😉

from my pov mbp makes good analytical posts, if he states firm opinion in response to posts, people need to grow a pair, if u can't handle an opinion life will be tough and in any case we should appreciate MBP posts , they seem pretty valid, and higher quality relative to other posts

Thank you kind sir - and you make an interesting point with regards your observation on testicular fortitude - I couldn’t have said it better myself....

Equally I can’t say I feel any obligation to account for this sudden charge of “always having the last word” - as serious a charge as it is 😉

I’d prefer to have spent the last page of my post history debating FPL issues to be honest rather than that bizarre train wreck of a thread, but it was mildly amusing if nothing else 🙂
