Can De Bruyne offer better value than Sterling or Aguero in Man City attack?

With Manchester City sitting top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1 to 11, many Fantasy Premier League managers will be eyeing up at least one attacking option from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero (both £12.0m) will again be popular choices but much-anticipated price rises mean that only Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is a more expensive FPL asset than the premium City pair in 2019/20.

Price hikes for other high-achieving players, meanwhile, have left FPL managers scrabbling around for cost-effective alternatives elsewhere.

Bernardo Silva (£8.0m) and David Silva (£7.5m) may appeal at the top-end of the mid-price bracket, with the Portugal international in particular being one of City’s more secure starters (if there is such a thing) given the high esteem in which Guardiola holds him.

Gifted as they are, the cheaper City midfielders didn’t fully convince as reliable Fantasy options last season.

Twelve FPL midfielders had better points-per-match averages than the pair (4.3), with Sterling (6.9) top for that statistic among outfield Premier League players.

The two Silvas have only scored two league goals between them in 2019.

Question marks over the game-time and futures of wingers Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) and Leroy Sane (£9.5m) also persist.

The return to fitness of Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) intrigues, then, especially as the Belgian’s starting price has dropped below the £10.0m mark for the first time since his Chelsea days.

De Bruyne had an injury-ravaged 2018/19 and played less than 1,000 minutes, having had five separate spells on the sidelines.

A total of five attacking returns was a meagre haul but 21 goals and 49 assists in his previous three campaigns combined underscore what he is capable of when fit and firing.

Given that he is a full £2.5m cheaper than Sterling and Aguero, we’ll look at De Bruyne’s credentials for 2019/20 compared to the other City options around him – in particular, the two more expensive attackers.

    I need a 4.5m defender.

Going by the first 10 gameweeks, Bournemouth, Villa and Burnley provide the best value for players within that range.

    Who would you recommend?

This might help. Did a post on 4.5m defenders: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2019/06/28/why-choosing-a-budget-goalkeeper-in-2019-20-could-be-difficult/?hc_page=4&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_20391053

Charlie Taylor might be good when Burnley's fixtures improve.
Diop could be good if he moves to United.
O'Connoll/Baldock if you're willing to risk a promoted side.

      Pickings are slim.

Elmo and Aarons are great going forward, but the Villa and Norwich defence may be horrendous.

At least Sheffield might be tight, especially if Henderson extends his loan... but then you'd want Henderson 🙂

Yep, I’ve been considering Henderson when he’s in the game.

Went with Ryan last year and was frustrating, but I feel like I’m gonna fall in the trap again because of his fixtures early on.

Elmo has pedigree and attacks, so definitely in my top 3 to consider.

This is actually a much more balanced team than I thought it would be with 3 big in defense and 3 big in Mid

Thanks. I’d like to keep Giroud, but it depends on the plans Chelsea have with Tammy Abraham. Time will tell.

Also on Tammy... I may replace DCL with Kodjia if Tammy stays at Chelsea, or even with Tammy if he moves to Villa.

Yeah, the lack of good 4.5's in df and 4.5/5 in mid forces you to look at higher prices and thus make more cuts elsewhere. Think they have priced very well this yr.

Exactly, they've tried to be really careful to avoid another AWB scenario. Value is tough to find.

      2. Brosstan
        • 9 Years

My criticism is theyve made the premium defenders too cheap. I tinker a lot but it seems absolutely dumb to forego at least 4 possibly 5 top defenders. Other than that the prices are well done.

Why own Ritchie when he costs .5 less than Mendy or the same as a Spurs defender? Why own Pereira at .5 less than VVD... The same argument goes for every single non top 6 defender. The price gap is too small because the top 6 defenders are too cheap.

Will VAR increase Palace's already high penalties won stat?

VAR should neither increase nor decrease the number of penalties awarded over the season.

However, lack of Zaha at Palace will definitely decrease the number Mili gets to hit.

I was looking for the article earlier. It was posted here somewhere at the end of last season.

Basically the report was carried out across all existing leagues where VAR is implemented. They looked at the number of penalties awarded each year before and after VAR implementation. There was no significant difference.

More Villa tips - if our new.signing Wesley settles, Kodjia is.nothing but a backup. Villa play a 4-1-4-1 that moves into 4-3-3 in possession, and Wesley is our replacement for Tammy. Kodjia will be restricted to cameos.

*whispers it* Personally I am looking at El Ghazi at that price point. McGinn gets stuck in which will make him a baps magnet but also a card magnet. El Ghazi will, has a better assist chance and doesn't get the yellows.

Deulo is my favoured 6.5m atm. Quality player, and keeps on improving every time I watch him. He could be in for a big season.

If Jota had good fixtures and didn't have Europa league in between games, he'd be stunning value. But those fixtures are horrendous. I won't be starting with a Wolves player.

I'm fairly sure Fraser will be leaving this window, and that severely dents King and Wilson imo. The Scottish Messi creates the majority of their chances, he's so important.

      I'm big on Deulo.

One of my two is Chris Wood, and he doesnt even have penalties. Just think he's a quality goalscorer with a decent first 8 fixtures.

He's a great shout and on my watchlist but fixtures and a slightly heftier price than I had hoped for are currently ruling him out.

Daniel James, looked great the few times I watched him at Swansea, very fast and can finish. I'm hoping that he starts, could be an absolute bargain at 6.0.

Iwobi - if he can nail his place this season, close to 100 pts last 2 seasons with less than 2000 mins could be great for 6m

Another good shout if he can nail down a spot in the team: definitely has great assist potential that he could fulfil given the minutes.

Yeah iwobi is a good left field pick particularly if they sell one of their forward players to avoid what seems like inevitable rotation

Not so much a player as no player! Seriously tempted to go without a goalkeeper until my customary early wildcard. I think the .5 can be put to better use elsewhere by allowing you to get a player you really want rather than kidding yourself you are happy with the cheaper option e.g. Digne over Coleman, Robbo over VVD, Jiminez over Giroud.

      Worth a look for sure.

Same points as Digne last season, same price this season.

Azpi got 6 assists, Digne 5.

Top 6 clubs get a lot more clean sheets.

      But no Haz this season.

And what will his role be under Lampard?

I'm waiting to see who's in charge at Chelsea and what system they go for.

I'd fancy Giroud if he's leading the line, I'll jump on Alonso if there's even a hint he get's play pretend-defender in a back 5, even Jorginho could be a cheap gem if he plays a little further forward and keeps pens.

Likewise with Azpi, need to see if the new Chelsea can keep CS, whether he's RB or CB or even reduced minutes due to age

If people are going premium back 4, say TAA, Robbo, Laporte

Great player, and probably good value. The problem is he's competing with Digne and his awesome fixtures, and potentially Benjamin Mendy too. There's also the managerial uncertainty.

With Azpi it’s the uncertainty of a new manager and system. Monreal is also under the radar at 5.0m.

    A) Ederson KDB noble diop
    B) Ryan sterling 4.0 4.5 ???

Trying to work out if going with sterling is worth having a worse bench but then having 2 caption options in salah and sterling.

    1. *sigh*
      • 12 Years

I’d go B and risk poor bench early in season. As long as you have one playing defender on bench it’s worth a risk to have two excellent captain choices. Firstly there may be another 4.0 defender show up like AWB last year. Kelly may be the one. Secondly you’ll have a wildcard if it all got wrong.

Do you not think KDB could match sterling for points, I’d say should KDB be fit hes more nailed than sterling with mahrez bilva able to play on the right

    Vardy, Arnie, Nketiah

Nice surprise the game is back. Will change a lot but this is my early draft
    Heaton, 4.0
    TAA, Coleman, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0
    Salah, Sterling, Zaha, Grealish, Dendoncker
    Kane, King, Jota

Not sure on goalkeepers or defence, Grealish as well. Could downgrade Kane and get KDB too but not sure on many cheaper strikers. Vardy has some tough opening games too.

    Pickford
    TAA, Digne, Laporte, A. Smith
    Sterling, Mane, Richar, Moura

Still waiting for a few missing players to drop which may change my team around!

I'm kind of hoping Klopp sleeps with Origi's missus so he moves to Everton in revenge and becomes a bargain 5.5m forward, scoring a hat-trick in the derby, and celebrating in Klopp's face.

    Doesn't seem too likely though.

As a left field suggestion: trippier/holding (if starts) rotation over Digne. Ars/Spurs rotate so well, and spurs a stronger defensive outfit than everton. Also have a sub for when trippier doesn't start...

Maddison and Zaha (not if he goes to Arsenal) are the picks, underneath that, I see value in Redmond, JWP and Townsend. Chels for me are wait and see, new manager and all but their price points make them attractive

      Zaha and Anderson pop out.

West Ham need some serious monitoring in pre-season. Fornals, Lanzini, Snodgrass, Anderson, Yarmolenko, Antonio all battling for spots. And if they sign a striker, Arnautovic could move back from the ST position and cause more competition.

If United sell Pogba, and Maddison goes to United as their main creative player, he could be good at 7.0m. Not sure I fancy him to be that good value at Leicester - Demarai Gray and Barnes are still raw and aren't clinical enough yet.

      Willian obviously worth a monitor.
