Can De Bruyne offer better value than Sterling or Aguero in Man City attack?

With Manchester City sitting top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1 to 11, many Fantasy Premier League managers will be eyeing up at least one attacking option from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero (both £12.0m) will again be popular choices but much-anticipated price rises mean that only Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is a more expensive FPL asset than the premium City pair in 2019/20.

Price hikes for other high-achieving players, meanwhile, have left FPL managers scrabbling around for cost-effective alternatives elsewhere.

Bernardo Silva (£8.0m) and David Silva (£7.5m) may appeal at the top-end of the mid-price bracket, with the Portugal international in particular being one of City’s more secure starters (if there is such a thing) given the high esteem in which Guardiola holds him.

Gifted as they are, the cheaper City midfielders didn’t fully convince as reliable Fantasy options last season.

Twelve FPL midfielders had better points-per-match averages than the pair (4.3), with Sterling (6.9) top for that statistic among outfield Premier League players.

The two Silvas have only scored two league goals between them in 2019.

Question marks over the game-time and futures of wingers Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) and Leroy Sane (£9.5m) also persist.

The return to fitness of Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) intrigues, then, especially as the Belgian’s starting price has dropped below the £10.0m mark for the first time since his Chelsea days.

De Bruyne had an injury-ravaged 2018/19 and played less than 1,000 minutes, having had five separate spells on the sidelines.

A total of five attacking returns was a meagre haul but 21 goals and 49 assists in his previous three campaigns combined underscore what he is capable of when fit and firing.

Given that he is a full £2.5m cheaper than Sterling and Aguero, we’ll look at De Bruyne’s credentials for 2019/20 compared to the other City options around him – in particular, the two more expensive attackers.

A bit annoying imo. Liked to sort them by price and team structure.
Was also easier to compare similar drafts when players were on the same spots.

They make alot of sense. He wants a big move, Arsenal need wingers. He was a boyhood fan of the Gunners. It all adds up. Rumours persist over time. I think the rumors have substance to it, but not sure Arsenal has the talent in the negotiation table to get him at a good deal.

If Zinchenko nails that LB, he is essential. One to watch in preseason.
Kelly is a nice 4.0 option if Palace don't sign anyone else.
Giroud is a decent diffy pick, but will stay away from Chelsea until more news about CHO and RLC.
Zaha, not sure he gets more pens from VAR. If anything, he mught get more YCs for simulation. Still a good option, and definitely in my watchlist. My interest will increase dramatically if he signs for Arsenal or Spurs.

Overall okay. Giroud to McGoldrick, Zaha to Fraser, and Dendocker to Redmond/Brooks.

Its is definitely an interesting idea. Two prime fixtures for the taking, and many usually WC around GW3 anyway to rearrange the team according to the players who look good in those two weeks. It personally think its feasible.

Given how many of us wildcard within the first few weeks anyway, I wonder if we should embrace that and be more open to starting with non-standard team structures? It's not like we'll be sticking with them for long.

    For example something like:

    Ryan
    Robertson, TAA, Azpi, Zinch, Coleman
    Salah, KDB, 7m, 6m
    Aguero

Forget the players themselves, why not opt for that sort of structure?

I think for the sake of £0.5m it is probably worth choosing Van Dijk over TAA. If you're going to pay £7m for a Liverpool defender, you should go for Robertson IMO.

Digne is also a little expensive. I'd downgrade him maybe to Coleman. I feel like everyone this season is spending way too much on defenders when there are cheaper options in clubs such as Everton, Tottenham & Chelsea.

Because of this choice you ended up with 3 cheap strikers. This will definitely cost you. You are missing Zaha (a must-have @ £7m) and also compensating for your expensive defence in choosing Mane over Salah, which I think is another mistake.

Honestly, I would rather have Salah and Bernardo Silva than Mane and KdB. I would also forget about Sterling, don't think he's worth it.

He's owned by over 50% of all teams. If you're not picking him then you are running a massive risk of him performing well and it costing you. Furthermore there are some rumours of him moving to Arsenal soon which may result in him having an even more successful season.

He's only £7m and picking the Maddisons and Frasers of this world over him is just a silly, amateur mistake.

Thanks!! Really appreciate the detailed feedback.

Good suggestions re: the defensive downgrades, just conscious that TAA and Digne both on free kicks and corners so more chance of returns Vs the other two. Although I am considering trippier at his price....?

Definitely want Salah and started with him and Bilva so May switch back, just think KdB could be a great differential when fully fit! Can’t have them all I guess....and Zaha does appeal but depends on what happens in the transfer market in my mind...cheers again!

No problem. People say Digne has a greater scoring chance as he is taking the set pieces but Coleman has always played very attacking football and I think he will get a lot of assists (as he always tends to do). I really believe the total number of assists he gets alone will outweigh the value of the goals scored by Digne.

KdB is a good differential and as much as I love him (obviously I'm a KdB fan), I really do think he's not going to be a big differential once things get going as he's already got a big % of FPL managers with him. Bernardo Silva was arguably the best midfielder for Man City of last season and he's definitely good value.

"He's already got a big % of FPL managers with him" - how so ?

            Team Selected By%
Bilva 9th most selected at 30.2%
Sterling 14th most selected at 22.1%
Aguero 18th most selected at 20.6%
Laporte 19th most selected at 20.3%
Walker 18th most selected at 15.6%
Mendy 23rd most selected at 13.3%

KDB 29th most selected at 11.9%

So you're saying that 11.9% of FPL teams having De Bruyne is not a big amount? When it comes to midfielders, that's a lot. He's competing with the likes of Salah & Zaha for popularity and he's only just returned. Once he hits into form he'll be much more popular.

Imo hes not an FPL player. He’s good for other Everton assets though. Holds the ball up well and wins a lot of headers but his goal conversion stinks which he needs to sort out before being considered.

Already got King and DCL ended the season as Everton's first choice striker and will be nailed unless they sign someone.

Head-to-Head league question (I should probably know this after playing game so long, but never set up own H2H!) -

If you select ‘unlimited’ how are the matches worked out, if there are say 50 teams?!
Also, why can you only select a max of 16 not 20?

I’m trying to set one up for a Palace fans forum and there’s likely to be quite a few interested. Maybe creating 4 or 5 leagues of 16 is best?

How is she looking? I don't feel confident in midpriced options as of now given the fixtures and uncertainties etc. So I'm thinking about going 5 at the back until I wildcard.

    Heaton
    TAA Robertson Mendy Laporte Digne
    Salah (C) KDB Siggy
    Wilson Deulofeu*

    Subs: Ryan Dedoncker Hayden 4.5
    ITB; 0.5

It's something else alright. But all the players did better than similar priced midfielders last season. A bit boring not to cheer for goals, but on the other hand, 4 out of 5 offers great offensive output as well in terms of assist

I’m giving the same def serious thought!

          4/5 are effectively midfielders.

What puts me off is the pain of when a side like Norwich score a late consolation goal that can do serious damage to your defensive double up!

Doubling up, or in this case ‘doubley doubling up’, is massively high risk/ high reward. Could be gold, could be.....

My experience is that I wildcard within the first 5 rounds anyway. Going for some safe starters and cleansheets is enticing to begin the season with. So I'm currently on a 5-3-2 atm. Then use wildcard to switch formation (3-5-2 / 3-4-3 / 4-3-3 etc)

I hear a lot of folks arguying that one should pick Coleman over Digne to save 0.5.

But why? It's not like Everton keep many CS anyway (I know they had a good end to the season but still).

I'm picking Digne for his attackig returns compared with the ocassionally CS. If I don't pick Digne I rather go without Everton defence at all.

    Thoughts?

FC, I can never endorse a 5 at the back strategy!! No matter what, that's too many defenders for my taste whose main value is Clean Sheets....I'd rather have players that are more consistent 'scorers' (assists, goals) than defenders, and only a handful of those are good 'offensive' players (so, target those).

Tho, I am considering, the first time in awhile, playing a 4 4 2.

Coleman was returning to some good form towards the end of last season. It took a long time for him to recover from his broken leg.
Digne was just as attacking but he has free kicks in his locker over Coleman.
I’ll be going Digne but if 0.5m has to be found he could go for Seamus.
RE clean sheets, We have the good fixtures but who knows how we will start. Just hope we can get Zouma back.

I just don't think he looks the same as he used to do. Many people who suffers from a broken leg don't return to the same form as they had before. Don't know if its a mental thing and what not, but I don't believe he is worth his pricetag.

With those fixtures, both could be pretty good value. If they re-sign Zouma, and tie down Gueye, there's no reason Everton can't keep up their defensive form.

I thought Goalman looked quite sharp...
