Palace and Everton reward defensive investment in 0-0 draw

Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Yerry Mina x3 (£5.5m), Michael Keane x2 (£5.5m), Jordan Pickford x1 (£5.5m)

Crystal Palace and Everton played out a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park that highlighted both sides’ serious need for a goalscoring forward in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

However, it left Fantasy managers invested in the defences of each team delighted to get clean sheets at the first time of asking.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) had two excellent chances for Everton but couldn’t find the back of the net, disappointing the 14% of Fantasy maangers who trusted him with a spot in their Gameweek 1 sqauds.

Meanwhile, strong defending from Michael Keane (£5.5m) and his colleagues, as well as some smart stops from Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), kept Palace at bay to ensure the Merseysiders continued their strong defensive form from the end of the 2018/19 season.

That was welcome news for those who had been a little concerned about the value in Everton’s defence in light of Idrissa Gueye’s departure and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) remaining at Chelsea.

Palace grew into the game and were helped by the introduction of Zaha

However, it must be said that Palace did spend the first 65 minutes without their talismanic forward player Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) who missed pre-season due to involvement in the African Cup of Nations and reportedly handed in a transfer request towards the end of the summer window.

Selected by 19.8% of managers ahead of Gameweek 1, Zaha was omitted from the starting XI by Roy Hodgson, but came off the bench to a raucous ovation from the Selhurst faithful indicating the fans are both appreciative and understanding of the Ivorian’s situation despite reportedly trying to force a move to Everton.

“I only really saw him on Friday, basically, because I sent him home on Thursday and we didn’t train on Wednesday. But if you are asking me how was he yesterday, he was fine. And today in the dressing room, and in the game? He was excellent in the dressing room, and you could see what he did in the game. The fact is that the situation has been and gone. I am sure Wilf will now make certain he brings his straw to the water to help us have a good season, just like he has in the past two seasons [when I have been here].” – Roy Hodgson

Saturday’s fixture against Everton highlighted that in spite of the situation regarding Zaha and the question marks over his commitment to the club, this is a player with raw and unparalleled ability in Palace’s squad and someone who could make a serious attacking impact for the Eagles in 2019/20. It took him coming on to spark Palace into life.

“I thought he handled it very well. The crowd helped didn’t it, giving him such a great reception. It was nice to have him available. I thought the two front players did an exceptional job, but they were tiring, and it was good to have him to come on, and Connor Wickham too to help keep that momentum that we had going in the latter part of the game. It was never going to be easy to break them down, although I hoped that we might eventually.” – Roy Hodgson

Max Meyer (£5.5m) had a string of promising chance for Palace, but the German couldn’t find a clinical cutting-edge as Hodgson’s side laboured in vain.

Christian Benteke (£6.0m) also fired a number of blanks with the Belgian appearing to be still short of confidence and unlikely to shoulder responsibility for Palace’s goals this season.

Richarlison and Everton’s attacking players are in need of some help, which Kean should bring them

It was a similar story for Everton who began the match without new signing Moise Keane (£7.0m) in the starting line-up, the striker having not been involved in any of the Toffees’ pre-season matches.

After arriving as a 69th-minute substitute for Dominic Calvert Lewin (£6.0m), he showed glimpses of quality that suggested the hype surrounding his switch from Juventus could be justified.

The Italian should play an important role for the Toffees this season but may need time to find his feet, as well as earning the trust of Fantasy managers with more proven options such as Sigurdsson and Richarlison (£8.0m) currently available.

Pickford’s defensive performance underlined his value to Fantasy managers with a first clean sheet of the season. The defensive quartet of Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Yerry Mina (£5.5m) Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) and Keane shielded the England international from Palace’s efforts in the second half and will have inspired confidence in their Fantasy owners ahead of Watford’s trip to Goodison Park in Gameweek 2.

Everton could have some central midfield issues after Gomes (right) went off injured and Schneiderlin was shown a red card

However, an injury to Andre Gomes (£5.5m) is an area of potential concern for Everton’s central midfield options. He was replaced by new signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin (£5.0m) in the 45th minute.

Silva confirmed that the 26-year-old is set to be assessed in the coming days and admitted that Everton suffered when he had to come off.

“The moment the game changed was the injury to André Gomes. We hope it’s not serious. When I changed it with Jean-Philippe Gbamin he had some problems, which is normal he needs to adapt, and when you sign new players, young players they need time to adapt and it was one of the keys for us because we started losing easy balls during that second-half.” – Marco Silva

Furthermore, Everton are already down one option in central midfield after Morgan Schneiderlin‘s (£4.5m) red card in the second half. He was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 76th minute and will miss that meeting with Watford next weekend.

“I didn’t see the first [booking]. But the referee gave the second. For me it was not, but Morgan should not react like he did, if you are playing with a yellow card, you have a risk.” – Marco Silva

Any fellow Kane owners feel like they got away with murder yesterday?

Spurs were pretty awful until Eriksen came on, could have easily blanked on another day. I'm one of the few that managed to fit in Kane in my ML which means the rest of team looks pretty awful in comparison to others in the league. I'm writing off City away next week but eally relying on Spurs to create more chances for Kane in home games after that.

I only watched the last 20 minutes and it seemed like everytime he received the ball he was playing down the left-wing. But definitely felt jammy when he scored the 2 goals but we'll take it

Spurs as a whole struggled in the first half. In the second they improved, and then went hell for leather when Eriksen came on.

I don't think the game really showed anything new about Kane or Spurs. They've been doing this for a couple of seasons now.

Playing as a 2, Kane isn't a great option. But when he plays alone with 2 wingers, he gets into better positions and will generally get 1 or 2 golden chances.

I'd be wary of buying him as I think Pocc likes playing 2 up top with a diamond. If you own him, keep.

True, there were concerns of him playing deep for most of last year but he still ended up as joint top scorer. Good players find a way I guess.

Yeah, I wasn't exactly brimming with confidence at half time. Thing is, he is more than capable of grabbing one or two next week as well such is the man. Lets be honest, putting him in from the start of the season was a risk in itself given his propensity to have an awful August so I am thankful for the good start.

Yeah I guess part of why he has such a high price tag is that he can score out of nowhere or score a pen even when he/Spurs aren't playing their best.

But you pick him for his habit of scoring. He did just that.

He also “failed the eye test” for much of last season before he hit injured - still racked up 132 points in 22. It’s what he does.

Very good point. He isn't as mobile as he was and he seemingly hinders those around him, but he'll score goals and that's all that matters in FPL.

Maybe he needs someone around him to do the running? Bobby Robson got the used the likes of Bellamy, Robert and Solano to make up for Shearer slowing down and told Shearer to concentrate on being up front for the chances.

      A little.

Even though he had a "bad season" last year, his rate of return was still up there with the Salahs and Agueros when he was on the pitch.

      I think he'll be fine.

As a non owner I wasn’t suprised at all by the outcome

      A. That he went 86 mins against a newly promoted team at home with an attacking return

      And

      B. That he finished the game with 13 points

We know what Kane delivers - 35-40 attacking returns and 180--220 points depending on his fitness - he’s a very good player, but he’s just got even better competition for budgets in the form of Salah & Sterling who both operate on a different plane to him

(Even Sterling’s PPG in his relatively quiet first 22 weeks of last year was much higher than Kane’s, and he finished the season 50 points clear of him despite missing every 6th game or so)

It’s not Kane’s fault, but his game just isn’t as well rewarded by the points system

Even Vardy today will likely go quite close to, if not exceeding him

Im sticking to my plan. Have to remember that these mid price players will blank probably around 40% of games even if they reach their expected PPG averages. Hard after such an uninspiring game though.

All of the bournemouth attackers looked poor.

They thrive on open games and space to run into. Sheffield defend well in numbers and were compact so they all struggled. I'd expect them to do a lot better against Villa.

What would you do with Trossard ?

Really wanted to save a FT going into GW2.
Start him or sell him for someone like McGinn or Chelsea No 10?

I'm holding until after GW2 at least. A downgrade of Wilson and/or a LIV def will give me options in there if he doesn't materialise as nailed going FWD.

I have Moura, Trossard and Lundstram.

At the moment, my feeing is to hold Trossard and do something like Moura > Martial / Chelsea asset, and have Lundstram as first sub.

Probably gonna have to shift unfortunately.

I don't want non-nailedness in my 6m mid, the bench is too weak to be doing that.

McGinn's the favourite, he was in most of my drafts before the deadline. Though will watch for Barkley today, or maybe Ceballos

What to do if you own Bilva?

Ideally wouldn’t use a transfer GW1 but obviously too expensive to not be playing. I wouldn’t mind too much if I knew he’d get 0 points again as I’d just start Lundstrum.

      Should I just do Bilva -> Rich/Siggy?

Because Pep did what he's been doing for 3 years now. A strange decision will be made next week, and Bilva could easily end up right behind the striker.

        Just keep him.

Mahrez gave the ball away a couple of times yesterday and took too many touches in possession.

When you have silva in your team you’re effectively accepting he’ll start 4 out of 6, come of the bench in 1 out of 6 and not feature in 1 out of 6.

His PPG means it doesn’t really matter as long as you have a playing first sub.

He played RM at Anfield. Very good set pieces, likes a through ball and seemingly not afraid to shoot. I do think he might be better off in the 10, but that's the first time I ever saw him play. Not many teams and players have impressed at Anfield in the past 2 seasons, but Norwich and Buendia definitely did.

Does not look good for Guilbert owners like me 🙁
      Elmo first choice it seems.

Dean Smith says Guilbert omission purely down to numbers. Wanted two defenders, two midfielders and two forwards on the bench. Konsa and Targett got the nod.

Jesus, thought my 77 points so far would be better than 324k. Bloody Kane and his jammy brace

Vardy and Perez. I'm already thinking of of doing something like: Moura -> McGinn and Vardy->Kane.

Im not too bothered about getting Kane, he looked poor for 99% of the game.

              Vardy should do well today

“He looked poor for 99% of the game”

Yet, he ended up with 13 pts.

I wonder what would happen if he plays “ok”

74 with 2 to go for me. Chuffed with that to be honest. Not really concerned with OR this early.

        Here’s my team:
        Pope
        Montoya,Coleman,TAA,VVD
        Salah,Sterling,Perez,KDB
        Wilson,King

        Button,Dendoncker,Greenwood,Lundstram

Should I just save the transfer? I can’t see any obvious changes

Save. I guess the issue is going to be including Kane at some point.

With 2 FTs I can do KDB to a 6.5 then Wilson to Kane.

I'm just glad to have the football and FPL back. Moaning about rank, missed opportunities and transfers in GW1 shows a lack of experience. 🙂

Murray owner here. Tough day at the office for the old guy. Should I stick with him for another match?

        Advice appreciated
