Bournemouth attack uninspiring in Sheffield United draw

Bournemouth 1-1 Sheffield United

Goals: Chris Mepham (£4.5m) | Billy Sharp (£6.0m)

Assists: Callum Wilson (£8.0m)

Bonus Points: Sharp x3, Mepham x2, John Lundstram (£4.0m)

Bournemouth’s attacking assets failed to impress in a scrappy 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday.

There had been great interest in Callum Wilson (£8.0m), Josh King (£6.5m) and Ryan Fraser (£7.5m) ahead of Gameweek 1, each player in at least 19% of teams.

However, the Cherries were too slow in their approach play at the Vitality Stadium to truly cause the newly-promoted side many problems.

Eddie Howe deployed his side in a 3-4-3 system with Diego Rico (£4.0m) and Adam Smith (£4.5m) as the wing-backs but it did not get the best out of the forward players.

Wilson was the central striker with Fraser and King as inside forwards, but none of them managed more than one shot each.

In total, Bournemouth managed just three efforts on target at the Vitality Stadium, although at half-time they had not mustered a single one.

“I don’t think we got into any rhythm on the ball and that will be frustrating for us today. I think we’re usually a lot more fluid with our movements and our passing but we found it difficult to break them down. Every game is so different at this level. We’re going to tweak our system throughout the season.” – Eddie Howe

Wilson was in perhaps the most frustrating form given that he found himself in good positions when breaking on the Sheffield United defence but lost possession far too many times.

The centre forward’s passes in the final third were often wayward. His owners will be encouraged by the positions he took up, but less so by his ability to find any of those around him.

Furthermore, while they will be just about content with a five-point score, Wilson probably should have scored with his only shot of the game.

Eddie Howe went with a 3-4-3 formation against Sheffield United

Bournemouth’s goal came after a penalty box scramble in which Wilson blasted a point-blank shot straight at Dean Henderson (£4.5m) with the goal gaping, claiming the assist only because Chris Mepham (£4.5m) bundled in the rebound.

Bournemouth’s attacking play probably also wasn’t helped by Howe’s selection in the middle of the pitch as he went with two central defensive midfielders in Jefferson Lerma (£5.0m) and new signing Philip Billing (£5.0m).

The latter was an especially surprising choice given that he registered just 60 minutes of involvement in Bournemouth’s pre-season campaign.

It is also possible that Howe was forced into the 3-4-3 system by his lack of winger options currently.

David Brooks (£6.5m) and Junior Stanislas (£6.0m) came into the season with long-term injury problems while new signing Arnaut Danjuma (£6.0m) missed Gameweek 1 with a foot problem.

“In the game last week he just felt a pain in his foot so he didn’t train this week so we’re still assessing the injury.” – Eddie Howe

Nathan Aké (£5.0m), Steve Cook (£4.5m) and Mepham were the three centre-backs chosen by Howe on Saturday.

Despite concerns over Bournemouth’s defensive capabilities this season, they largely stood up well to Sheffield United’s attacks.

The only reason they conceded a late Billy Sharp (£6.0m) goal was down to a rare moment of disorganisation in the box following a goal-mouth scramble.

“We went the three today we felt that was the best way to play in and out of possession. Didn’t quite play out as we’d hoped but at this level, you’re always learning. I thought the three centre-backs did very well, looked solid, aerially we did well, we competed and protected Ramdale very well.” – Eddie Howe

Aaron Ramsdale (centre) was handed Bournemouth goalkeeping duties for Gameweek 1

The fact that Bournemouth looked fairly solid for much of the game will be of considerable encouragement for owners of budget left-back Rico, who played 90 minutes.

With an injury to Lloyd Kelly (£4.5m) and Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) used only sparingly in pre-season, Rico could be set to start in Gameweek 2, depending on which system Howe goes with against Aston Villa.

Also of note was Rico’s involvement in set pieces in Gameweek 1. He shared corners and indirect free kicks with Fraser and played the same number of key passes in the game as the Scottish international.

Bournemouth manager Howe finally revealed to Fantasy managers who his first-choice goalkeeper was with his selection on Saturday.

After registering the joint-highest number of pre-season minutes between the sticks, it was Aaron Ramsdale (£4.5m) who started against Sheffield United. Howe was pleased with his performance so it looks likely that he’ll feature at Villa Park next week.

“Well, I came to that through evaluating all the goalkeepers during pre-season. I decided to go with Aaron, he’s done well, he hasn’t conceded a goal during pre-season and has looked really confident. I was delighted with his performance.” – Eddie Howe

Lundstram (left) showed some serious potential in Sheffield United’s draw with Bournemouth

As much as there is some encouragement about Rico, John Lundstram (£4.0m) already looks to be the toast of the budget defenders for the 2019/20 season.

As expected, he started the match in Sheffield United’s central midfield trio, but the 25-year-old was arguably one of the best players for the Blades.

In the first half alone, Lundstram could have had a goal and an assist to his name, which would have really drawn attention to him from the Fantasy community.

Early on, he played a fantastic ball into the box from deep which David McGoldrick (£5.5m) latched onto. The forward could not get enough purchase to truly trouble Ramsdale but the pass from Lundstram gives us an idea as to his capabilities.

Later in the half, the central midfielder let fly from distance, although he dragged the effort wide. At the start of the second, Lundstram found McGoldrick again, who fired inches wide with a fierce effort.

As predicted the more attacking option Luke Freeman (£5.5m) replaced Lundstram in the second half as they looked to chase the game. Chris Wilder made this substitution a lot in pre-season too and it is possible that Lundstram may come off the pitch with clean sheets intact from time to time in 2019/20.

“The three midfield players were really disciplined in terms of their approach. Shut off channels, cut off passes.” – Chris Wilder

As Howe mentioned in his post-match quotes, Sheffield United were hard to break down on Saturday which bodes well for their defensive potential in the Premier League.

They were helped by the performance of goalkeeper Henderson, who came close to stopping Mepham’s opening goal and produced an incredible save to deny a powerful Billing pile-driver in the second half.

McGoldrick (left) and Robinson (right) were chosen by Wilder as Sheffield United’s two centre-forwards at Bournemouth

Despite scoring just two points, there were some encouraging signs for out-of-position FPL midfielder Callum Robinson (£5.5m).

He started up front in Wilder’s 3-5-2 system and had several opportunities to score. He saw a fierce effort from distance well saved by Ramsdale in the 20th minute and was inches away from converting a George Baldock (£4.5m) cross in the second half.

More importantly, it looks as if his place in the side is not to be jeopardised by the signing of Oli McBurnie (£6.0m).

The former Swansea City striker came on for McGoldrick in the 63rd minute, allowing Robinson to play the whole game.

The introduction of Billy Sharp (£6.0m) in the 80th minute also did not affect Robinson’s pitch time as Wilder opted to forego one of his three centre-backs to facilitate the switch, Chris Basham (£4.5m) making way.

“I thought Callum was excellent. He got his shots away, he was lively. Callum and David McGoldrick have been the best front two in pre-season.” – Chris Wilder

Why did you ever own him if you were planning on getting rid of him so soon? I personally don't think he is a good option in general but he just scored in the last game so why ditch now?

Some people are saying avoid Wolves until fixtures get better. Seems like they didn't pay attention to how they played last season. Wolves took 16 pts against top 6 opponents and 14 points against bottom 6 opponents. That is pretty extraordinary, but it wasn't accidental: Wolves are really good on the counter-attack, and against top 6 teams they are allowed space to do that. While the bottom teams park the bus, and then Wolves are way worse. That is why, last season, they beat Spurs (3 pts, with better goal diff), Chelsea(4 pts), Arsenal(4 pts) and Man United (4 pts), combined over their two league games.

(Of course Europa League is a legitimate reason for steering clear of Wolves, but hard opposition isn't).

Yeah but a team like City will avg 3 goals a game even they are outperforming their xg because they have the quality to do so.
On the other Brighton won't be able to do that.

When you have an xG less than 1 AND your opponents have a xG higher than you then it is fortunate IMO. This isn't like winning 2-1 when the xG is tight around 1-1. This was massively overperforming both defensively and offensively.

It certainly gave a minor advantage in H2H fixtures.
If nothing else knowing if they'd taken a hit from multiple transfers or up/downgraded someone.

Kind of feels like ironing out another difference between casuals and more experienced managers (not claiming to be in the latter, just not fully in the former!).

I'm all for an even playing field though.

        - KDB and Bilva will not cover Sterling
        - Moura doesnt cover Kane
        - Salah and a premium liverpool def is essential
        - There are potential bargains in this years promoted teams unlike last season (pukki buendia mcginn etc)
        - United defence strengthed significantly and are kindly priced.
        - Chelsea no go until lampard finds out his best xi
        - Everton and Bouremouth attackers are overpriced
Probably have to dive into Wolves Burnley Westham and Leicester to find budget attackers

Tough to derive so many conclusions after just one performance but agree with first 3.

Dont know why they were even considered as "cover" to be honest.

Not sure you can infer all of that from 1GW. Until Sterling scored his second goal at the 75th mark, KDB was going to eclipse his score. Teams will take time to settle into the season and I would certainly prefer to obtain more data before extrapolating these types of conclusions

Even discounting all of the Wolves bargains (Bennett, Doherty, Jota, Jiminez) there were still some options from the other two promoted sides that provided decent value : Etheridge, Camarasa and Mitrovic all delivered reasonably well based on how they were priced in the game.

          Fair assessment

United defense better for sure and do offer value, but they totally should have conceded a goal or two

          Non the wiser with Chelsea

The 6.5 striker slot is still u for grabs

'cover' only applies to defenders (and even then it's tenuous in some cases) - United defence will be better (hard not to be) but they were lucky ish not to concede yesterday. Difficult first game for Chelsea with a few players out, I think he more or less knows his best XI and it has Kante and Rudiger in it

Hah that could very well happen. Of course I see your point, and partly agree with it (perhaps not the premium defender bit.) But with all the other attacking options firing, you surely cannot come to that conclusion based on gw1.

          - Sterling is must have in my opinion but De Bruyne looks a great option as well.
          - Don't think anyone has Moura as a long term pick.
          - Agreed.
          - Yeah probably.
          - Not convinced yet. Incredibly lucky to keep a clean sheet against Chelsea. Only Villa conceded more shots in the GW.
          - They really should've scored. Barkley looked good for 6m, didn't get why Lampard subbed him.
          - One game isn't enough to determine this.

I see the temptation but I assume you would want Kane back for GW3 so effectively costing you 2 transfers. If Auba doesn’t haul and Kane scores against City you will be very annoyed with that move, so unless you would 100% give the armband to Auba and like to take risks early on, I would advise against it.

Have them both myself (along with Wilson): happy owning Wood as he's a great goalscorer playing a defensively out-of-shape Arsenal & preoccupied Wolves before a nice run of fixtures (Liverpool aside). King I'm probably selling after the Villa game, hopefully putting 2FT to good use.

This could be completely wrong but in previous seasons I’ve felt very little price changes occur in the first two weeks - In that might be lucky to see even one increase before GW2

I read somewhere that the price changes are more volatile in the first 6gws than the rest of the season because there are more active players.

It worked pretty well for me - but other tactics also did well.
Many cheaper defenders matched the scores of the premiums in GW1, but I wouldn't expect that to continue - I hope not anyway!
One of the best tactics in practice turned out to be loading up with MUN players - the list of the 15 most-owned players (2-5-5-3) by the top 50 contains no less than five MUN players.

Not something I’m really considering but with so many of the 9.0m plus players scoring last weekend should we maybe be looking to try squeeze a third big hitter into our teams with most only having two?

Is it better to be conservative with your transfers early on, taking the view that you picked your players for a reason and that there’s not enough data to base your moves on, or should you be aggressive with early season bandwagons, benefiting from early price risers but accepting the risk that they have the potential to fail you, and your cast-offs the potential to punish your disloyalty?

Personally I’ve always jumped on early season bandwagons and like my mid-priced slots to be in permanent transition from one form player to the next, but would love to hear what the experts think.

How aggressive should you be with transfers GW1/2/3? How long do you look ahead when making one?

I see people not making a move like Moura -> Martial because the player they own might outscore the alternative in the upcoming week (GW2, maybe 3), but given Martial will be more expensive soon, do you take the long term view that Martial will outscore Moura over the next 6 weeks and make the transfer?

Considering the GW1 template picks, how soon do you think it would be worth wildcarding? I know it depends on individuals' teams and natural variation, but have you identified a point in time when you think the template will change?

Early impressions on the budget midfield category? (sub 6m and not Dendoncker)

How do you deal with Alisson injury and implications for Adrian? (8-10 weeks out, makes him a viable set and forget option until your first wild card)

Which United player is essential for coverage?
(Pre-game I was around 200k and rank doubled with clean sheet + returns for Pogba + Rashford + Martial)

Should we be looking to bring in United assets this week or wait for the Wolves game?

Those of us who have no money in the bank waiting probably means downgrading a player next week in order to afford them. for eg Fraser/Moura to Martial would not be affordable next week so a downgrade would be needed elsewhere.

Is a "Kane that we cannot captain" even worth having?

I would have to decimate my team to get him.

With Salah and Sterling frighteningly good (and highly owned) and with Spurs on the wane, does this minimise the chances of ever sensibly captaining Kane this season, except in a "catch up points/differential" scenario.

i.e. are City, Liverpool, and their two main attackers so far ahead/so dangerous, that they have made not captaining one or the other too risky.

How much you can read into GW1 results ?
Is there are risks that the likes of Pukki or McGinn will end up being this season's Mounie or Neves ?
As hard as it might be isnt the best policy to hold your nerves with transfers and give yourself 2 or 3 GW to asses targeted players ?

Which newly promoted team impressed you the most.

            For me

Best Defensively: SHU (seemed most disciplined)- can expect a few CSs.

Best Attack: NOR (even though they played 'pool, looked very confident with their attacking play and had a good tempo to their buildups.

            - Is a Brighton defensive double up a viable option? (Ryan+Duffy/Dunk)
            - I'll be playing Lundstram ahead of Zinchenko in GW2, maverick or not?

Fraser and Perez looked ineffective, are owners holding considering plenty of options around the 7.5 mark?

Questions about why the market isn't moving yet...4-5 days in, presumably a lot of Sterlings in and Allisons out...but no price change at what should be the busiest time of the season.

Questions about line-up changes seemingly out of the blue from preseason predictions. Trossard the obvious, I got burned by Matt Targett AND Gary Cahill too.

How do we get access to the first 95 Scoutcast episodes (taken down from libsyn since Granville posted Christmas music in episode 95 and he pulled all of the first 95 episodes)?

Appreciated as I love listening to the old episodes for how the game has changed and how it stays the same over the years.

Give Ryan Fraser (7.5m) one more week then switch to Martial (7.5m)?

we all love an out of position player or 2 in our sides
is it worth getting Martial and Robinson both classed as midfielders playing upfront, are there any others?

            The 6.5M striker....

            Started with King.
            Impressed by Pukki.
Wood / Barnes are good options...

            Who is your preference?

Is it better in the early rounds to jump on most transferred in players in the interests if your PV for later on in the season or going without? Especially for people with players who blanked, like Fraser and Vardy, whose values may fall, is it a wise move to take a four point hit even to get that PV up early doors? It is a big hindrance later on in the season when playing against some people with one or even two million higher PV. Surprised this has never been a hot topic or written about.

By GW3 yes, the bandwagons really kick off then

Increasing team value is important for closing the season imo

That said I’ve seen plenty of top managers make very few changes, taking very few hits is something I’m trying to get back to

It all depends on how the price changes are going to work from season to season. Many years ago prices would change drastically and you could manipulate your team to be so valuable that you could change a mid priced player to a premium. I’ve had a TV over 110. However, prices seem more stable now and I’m not sure it’s been worth it for a couple of seasons at least.

The main benefit of following bandwagons is protecting your OR. But I wouldn’t think too much about this until after the 2nd international break when a lot of WC’s have been played and the template starts to set.

worth considering with ft’s but multiple hits over course of opening 10gws wont pay off

I was top 100 2 seasons ago and took multiple hits early as wasn't quite enough needed doing to justify WC. Was able to delay WC until 15 or 16 when there was a nice fixture swing - even then only made about 6 transfers. Over season took 72 pts in hits.
Was far more conservative last year and only finished around 20k.
There were players in top 500 last season that had taken over 200 pts in hits. Think there were only about 5 or 6 that didn't take a hit all season. From memory think the average was between 50 and 60pts in hits for top 1000. (according to Premier fantasy tools site)

Building TV in the first half of the season is important I think. But avoiding hits even more. Finding a good balance between both is one of the keys to success imo.

all previous winners take hits through the season, last years winner said he did often and that's how to play it, just make sure the hit is worthwhile

For those who also punted on Moura for one week as a placeholder for a GW1 bandwagon:
          a) Start him against City
          b) Bench and play one of Dendonc/Lundstram/Greenwood
          c) Sell him...for who?

I think I’m going to hold onto him, possibly until gw4. My knee jerk would be Moura > Martial. But I quite like Wilson > Rashford in gw3.

Rashford would be my preference over Martial too. Only problem is he's going to be 8.8 by gw3.
