Bournemouth attack uninspiring in Sheffield United draw

Bournemouth 1-1 Sheffield United

Goals: Chris Mepham (£4.5m) | Billy Sharp (£6.0m)

Assists: Callum Wilson (£8.0m)

Bonus Points: Sharp x3, Mepham x2, John Lundstram (£4.0m)

Bournemouth’s attacking assets failed to impress in a scrappy 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday.

There had been great interest in Callum Wilson (£8.0m), Josh King (£6.5m) and Ryan Fraser (£7.5m) ahead of Gameweek 1, each player in at least 19% of teams.

However, the Cherries were too slow in their approach play at the Vitality Stadium to truly cause the newly-promoted side many problems.

Eddie Howe deployed his side in a 3-4-3 system with Diego Rico (£4.0m) and Adam Smith (£4.5m) as the wing-backs but it did not get the best out of the forward players.

Wilson was the central striker with Fraser and King as inside forwards, but none of them managed more than one shot each.

In total, Bournemouth managed just three efforts on target at the Vitality Stadium, although at half-time they had not mustered a single one.

“I don’t think we got into any rhythm on the ball and that will be frustrating for us today. I think we’re usually a lot more fluid with our movements and our passing but we found it difficult to break them down. Every game is so different at this level. We’re going to tweak our system throughout the season.” – Eddie Howe

Wilson was in perhaps the most frustrating form given that he found himself in good positions when breaking on the Sheffield United defence but lost possession far too many times.

The centre forward’s passes in the final third were often wayward. His owners will be encouraged by the positions he took up, but less so by his ability to find any of those around him.

Furthermore, while they will be just about content with a five-point score, Wilson probably should have scored with his only shot of the game.

Eddie Howe went with a 3-4-3 formation against Sheffield United

Bournemouth’s goal came after a penalty box scramble in which Wilson blasted a point-blank shot straight at Dean Henderson (£4.5m) with the goal gaping, claiming the assist only because Chris Mepham (£4.5m) bundled in the rebound.

Bournemouth’s attacking play probably also wasn’t helped by Howe’s selection in the middle of the pitch as he went with two central defensive midfielders in Jefferson Lerma (£5.0m) and new signing Philip Billing (£5.0m).

The latter was an especially surprising choice given that he registered just 60 minutes of involvement in Bournemouth’s pre-season campaign.

It is also possible that Howe was forced into the 3-4-3 system by his lack of winger options currently.

David Brooks (£6.5m) and Junior Stanislas (£6.0m) came into the season with long-term injury problems while new signing Arnaut Danjuma (£6.0m) missed Gameweek 1 with a foot problem.

“In the game last week he just felt a pain in his foot so he didn’t train this week so we’re still assessing the injury.” – Eddie Howe

Nathan Aké (£5.0m), Steve Cook (£4.5m) and Mepham were the three centre-backs chosen by Howe on Saturday.

Despite concerns over Bournemouth’s defensive capabilities this season, they largely stood up well to Sheffield United’s attacks.

The only reason they conceded a late Billy Sharp (£6.0m) goal was down to a rare moment of disorganisation in the box following a goal-mouth scramble.

“We went the three today we felt that was the best way to play in and out of possession. Didn’t quite play out as we’d hoped but at this level, you’re always learning. I thought the three centre-backs did very well, looked solid, aerially we did well, we competed and protected Ramdale very well.” – Eddie Howe

Aaron Ramsdale (centre) was handed Bournemouth goalkeeping duties for Gameweek 1

The fact that Bournemouth looked fairly solid for much of the game will be of considerable encouragement for owners of budget left-back Rico, who played 90 minutes.

With an injury to Lloyd Kelly (£4.5m) and Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) used only sparingly in pre-season, Rico could be set to start in Gameweek 2, depending on which system Howe goes with against Aston Villa.

Also of note was Rico’s involvement in set pieces in Gameweek 1. He shared corners and indirect free kicks with Fraser and played the same number of key passes in the game as the Scottish international.

Bournemouth manager Howe finally revealed to Fantasy managers who his first-choice goalkeeper was with his selection on Saturday.

After registering the joint-highest number of pre-season minutes between the sticks, it was Aaron Ramsdale (£4.5m) who started against Sheffield United. Howe was pleased with his performance so it looks likely that he’ll feature at Villa Park next week.

“Well, I came to that through evaluating all the goalkeepers during pre-season. I decided to go with Aaron, he’s done well, he hasn’t conceded a goal during pre-season and has looked really confident. I was delighted with his performance.” – Eddie Howe

Lundstram (left) showed some serious potential in Sheffield United’s draw with Bournemouth

As much as there is some encouragement about Rico, John Lundstram (£4.0m) already looks to be the toast of the budget defenders for the 2019/20 season.

As expected, he started the match in Sheffield United’s central midfield trio, but the 25-year-old was arguably one of the best players for the Blades.

In the first half alone, Lundstram could have had a goal and an assist to his name, which would have really drawn attention to him from the Fantasy community.

Early on, he played a fantastic ball into the box from deep which David McGoldrick (£5.5m) latched onto. The forward could not get enough purchase to truly trouble Ramsdale but the pass from Lundstram gives us an idea as to his capabilities.

Later in the half, the central midfielder let fly from distance, although he dragged the effort wide. At the start of the second, Lundstram found McGoldrick again, who fired inches wide with a fierce effort.

As predicted the more attacking option Luke Freeman (£5.5m) replaced Lundstram in the second half as they looked to chase the game. Chris Wilder made this substitution a lot in pre-season too and it is possible that Lundstram may come off the pitch with clean sheets intact from time to time in 2019/20.

“The three midfield players were really disciplined in terms of their approach. Shut off channels, cut off passes.” – Chris Wilder

As Howe mentioned in his post-match quotes, Sheffield United were hard to break down on Saturday which bodes well for their defensive potential in the Premier League.

They were helped by the performance of goalkeeper Henderson, who came close to stopping Mepham’s opening goal and produced an incredible save to deny a powerful Billing pile-driver in the second half.

McGoldrick (left) and Robinson (right) were chosen by Wilder as Sheffield United’s two centre-forwards at Bournemouth

Despite scoring just two points, there were some encouraging signs for out-of-position FPL midfielder Callum Robinson (£5.5m).

He started up front in Wilder’s 3-5-2 system and had several opportunities to score. He saw a fierce effort from distance well saved by Ramsdale in the 20th minute and was inches away from converting a George Baldock (£4.5m) cross in the second half.

More importantly, it looks as if his place in the side is not to be jeopardised by the signing of Oli McBurnie (£6.0m).

The former Swansea City striker came on for McGoldrick in the 63rd minute, allowing Robinson to play the whole game.

The introduction of Billy Sharp (£6.0m) in the 80th minute also did not affect Robinson’s pitch time as Wilder opted to forego one of his three centre-backs to facilitate the switch, Chris Basham (£4.5m) making way.

“I thought Callum was excellent. He got his shots away, he was lively. Callum and David McGoldrick have been the best front two in pre-season.” – Chris Wilder

Man, bath time is intense. I only lasted 20 minutes. Too hot, keep slipping down, boredom. When did baths become boring. Bloody smart phones have ruined a good bathing.

    Ok, I miscalculated to think that KDB coul be enough MC and not have Sterling. So would you;

    A) KDB, Auba > Sterling, Rashford
    B) KDB, Robbo > Sterling, Montoya
    C) Auba, Lanzini ,Zinchenko > Jota, Sterling, Montoya (-8)
    D) Forget Sterling

You picked PEA for the first two weeks for a reason.

It’s a fact. He will know if you transfer him out and:

        1) Deliberately score 15 points.

        2) Ring Pep and get him to rest Sterling for a week.

My head says not to knee jerk and that Sigurdsson almost scored on Saturday - he will come good.

Yet I was 50-50 with Martial, knew he'd be a great option and now he's going to rise because people just can't help themselves.

    Salah - Sterling - Siggy - Perez

    I can't bring Martial in, can I?

I'm Martial's owner and think that he is overestimated after one game. He did not look particulary impressive. ManU won that one but Chelsea allowed them to play counterattack in the second half. We will see how they will play against any decent defence like Wolves.

A particularly boring one but advice needed.....

Currently have Pope and Button as Keepers with .5 in the bank. Do you think it would be wise for me to use my FT this week to bring in Ryan as thinking rotating between the two for the rest of the season looks good!

The main reason I'm asking is is it worth using my FT to get Ryan in before he potentially rises in price after Brighton could quite easily get another clean sheet this week?

Sensible thinking? Don't ask why i didn't just already have Ryan... Doh! Thoughts would be very welcome. Ta all 🙂

I had been playing around with the .5 in other positions with my draft and if I'm honest got so locked in to trying to decide i completely missed that i still had Button!!! So yes i could have quite easily upgraded beforehand. The stress got to me! ha.

But thank you all..... Thats a unanimous no so ill go with the masses! Lets hope Pope can keep the gooners out!

I guess if your main issue is buying a second GK you have done well in GW1. Therefore you can save the FT and if GW2 goes according to plan you can bring in Ryan for GW3 and still have 2 FT for GW4. If not you’ll still have 2 FT after GW2 to fix whatever needs to.

You didn't pick Pope for clean sheets. You picked him for save points. As a set and forget 4.5.

Stick to your guns and plan. Roll the transfer over and use them both next week to improve your team. We'll all have literally double the info by this point next week.

Best to roll FT or knee-jerk for -4:

            A) King & Perez -> Rashford & Hayden (sub)
            B) Pérez & KWP -> Ndombele/Barkley & AWB
            C) Pérez & KWP -> Martial & Kelly (sub)

            Ryan
            Robertson, Digne, KWP, Lundstram
            Salah, Sterling, Dendoncker, Robinson
            Kane, King

            (Button, Perez, KWP, Greenwood)

Not sure why you’d bring Ndombele in for Perez. Ndombele is a DM who had one goal last year and scored Saturday from 25 yards. Perez is playing OOP and has some goal scoring pedigree.

            Hey lads!

            A) Guilbert => Dunk/Montoya

            B) Guilbert => Mings

            C) Guilbert => Lundstrom and hope KWP starts until international break (other defenders TAA, Robbo, Rico).

              C) Lundstrom seems like a safe 4.0 playing OOP. Rico’s place seems relatively safe as well (unless three switch formations) so you are likely to have cover if KWP is benched.

Think Wolves away is a bigger challenge for United, give it one more week. Plus you get Moura at home to Newcastle in GW3.

Foyth got an injury - might be a while. And Aurier's wanting out, so KWP has no competition, and decent fixtures from GW3.

Afternoon beautiful people. Had a disappointing weekend with Taylor and Targett missing. Especially when Burnley got a cleanie. On top of that I thought id had Doncks goal off the bench to compensate for about 3 minutes. Gutted. Also picked the wrong Burnley forward. Anyways, transfer option this week would be Targett or Taylor to Lundstram. Is it worth it or rely on bench if another no show? Cheers in advance.

As a Lundstram owner, I'd think he is a rotation risk now that they have Besic who can play there as well, but don't know much about Sheffield Utd so not exactly sure.

However they don't really have great fixtures after GW2 anyway so unless you really need that 0.5m, I'd go with a different option.

I’d ditch Taylor Friday unless something happens mid week. Burnley Fixtures are awful and while you have 11 that seem safe to play, it’s always possible that Trent or Donck could be rotated. I’d get in Lundstrom and free up .5 for GW 3.

Have Trossard in my team. Keeping a player who would probably not get a start bugs me a lot. I still think if he gets starts then he will be my mainstay with Brighton improving their attacking game this season and his undoubted talent. He had 14 goals and 7 assists last season and is on set pieces but Gross starting ahead of him is an issue. What would you have done?

The fact that they scored 3 without him, and Potter would likely keep a winning lineup would indicate to me that I made a massive error following the Scout Pick lads.

I didn't do that myself, but if I had I'd prob keep him in my lineup, have Donckers prepared to step up off my bench and ready 2FT after next weekend.

Never thought Heaton > Adrian would be the sexy GW2 transfer I’m trying to avoid making

How did Maupay and Murray look against Watford? I'm considering getting Maupay to replace Wood but not sure if he is likely to start? Would it be too risky to go for him at this point?

Also are there any other good striker options at 6.0m or less?

Okish start with 89. Gw2 doesnt look great but really happy with gw3.

              Pope
              Robbo VVD Rico Kiko
              Salah Sterling Martial Trossard
              Kane King

              Button Dendoncker Kiko Greenwood

              A) kane to aubameyang (and back week after)
              B) trossard to mcginn
              C) KWP to AMN
              D) roll and assess week after

Really want to do D), but feel like auba could haul and not confident in Salah v Southampton

                  Maitland niles

Probably as short sighted as putting KWP in in first place

I'm quietly confident Trossard definitely gets some action against West Ham so I'd hold tight. The hokey cokey with Kane and Auba is something I'd planned preseason. But he could still score against City and rolling a transfer is something I'm going to focus on a lot more this season

everyone saying this re Trossard but what is this based on?
If find it worrying he wasn't one of the subs to come on to change the game for Brighton. Surley at best it will be a cameo from the bench this weekend>?

You don't come on and 'change the game' when you're winning. And you're less likely to start and change the next game when the lads scored 3 without you.

“Leo was unlucky not to start. We went for Pascal’s experience on the opening day and an away fixture in the Premier League."

Just a hunch pal. I certainly won't be getting rid of the likes of Trossard or B Silva just for one game no show

I feels good to roll a transfer in GW1. GW3 is going to be good fun.
