Aguero causes more FPL headaches after latest double-digit haul

Manchester City dismantled Brighton and Hove Albion in a 4-0 victory on Saturday, with Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) stealing the headlines with a brace and an assist to send a timely reminder to Fantasy managers of his explosive potential.

We round up the key talking points in our latest Scout Notes article below.

Manchester City 4-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) x2, Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m), Bernardo Silva (£7.9m)
  • Assists: David Silva x2 (£7.4m), de Bruyne, Aguero
  • Bonus Points: Aguero x3, de Bruyne x2, David Silva x1

Aguero, owned by just 21.4% of managers, put in a dominant display at the Etihad to secure a 16-point score, with the most captained player of the week, Raheem Sterling (£12.3m), blanking to the disappointment of his 47.3% of owners.

Aguero’s brace against Brighton brings his tally to six goals in City’s first four Premier League matches, and despite the hat-trick from Sterling in Gamweek 1 against West Ham, it is difficult to look past the Argentine as being the Citizens’ primary source of goals in 2019/20.

This presents a serious dilemma to managers already in ownership of Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m), who also delivered a sensational performance with a goal and an assist, with tripling up on City attacking coverage representing a potential overload despite their promising fixtures and imperious offensive form.

De Bruyne was in exceptional nick at the Etihad against Brighton, with the Belgian midfielder exhibiting touches, through-balls and all-round attacking player that attests to him being City’s best player, though remaining fit will be pivotal if the playmaker is to make a serious impact for the Citizens in 2019/20.

With City’s defensive unit returning a second clean sheet of the season against Brighton, and the highly valuable Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) holding his spot in Guardiola’s first-choice backline, retaining a form of defensive coverage from City is also appealing, and therefore the aforementioned triple-up would not only be costly but logistically troublesome, too.

Selecting two of Sterling, de Bruyne and Aguero over the coming Gameweeks will be a serious test for managers who are looking to utilise the goalscoring form of the Citizens, but there is no doubt that these are three players in notable form who are likely to propel City to the top of the Premier League table.

Combine this selection dilemma with Guardiola’s notorious rotation roulette and selecting the right City assets who are not only in form but who are likely to start ahead of a promising run of fixtures is where ground will be seriously made or lost for managers with regards to assets from City.

Bernardo Silva (£7.9m) also chipped in with a goal during his substitute appearance after being assisted by Aguero to complete the rout, whilst David Silva (£7.4m) contributed two exquisite assists to also remind managers of his potential for attacking returns, with the Silva duo highlighting the sheer depth of options at Pep Guardiola’s disposal.

City were rampant against Graham Potter’s Brighton, though a devastating injury to Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m), who was replaced by Fernandinho (£5.3m) in the first half, could curtail the Frenchman’s season – causing a forced transfer for the 8% of managers who own the City centre-back.

The question also has to be asked about whether Laporte’s period of unavailability also makes City’s other FPL defenders less appealing as a result, given that he has been the bedrock of the champions’ backline for the last 12 months.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola said:

I think he’s gone to hospital. It doesn’t look good. I don’t know right now what he has done, but we will know tomorrow.

We’ll see. They’re diagnosing what he has right now. I’m waiting for the doctor to call me. He might be out for a while.

Laporte’s injury, combined with the ever-changing power dynamic in City’s frontline, is the main takeaway from their impressive victory over Brighton, though the Seagulls, despite exhibiting promising early-season form, now find themselves winless in three.

There were plenty of encouraging signs from this defeat, however, with Leandro Trossard (£6.0m) getting into a series of threatening positions but being unable to convert two excellent chances either side of half-time.

Adam Webster (£4.4m) started in place of Shane Duffy (£5.0m) though the £20m summer signing from Bristol City was unable to prevent the barrage of City attacks as Potter’s side, for all their admirable attacking ambition, became unstuck at the home of the champions.

This was an afternoon that belonged to the imperious Aguero, but the decisions that Fantasy managers now have to make regarding attacking coverage from City alongside the devastating injury to Laporte may lead to the deployment of Wildcards for those looking to solve the problems arising from the defensive injuries and sensational form from City’s attacking options.

Worst OR ever for me at the moment..

    Pope, Button
    Laporte*, VvD, Digne, Balbuena*, Montoya
    Salah, Sterling, Martial*, Cantwell, Dendoncker
    Vardy, King, Pukki

    1FT - 0.0 ITB

Time to shift something. Wildcard active?

You were unlucky with Laporte injuring himself.

Need to get KDB I think.

King > Greenwood and Martial > KDB?

761k is your worst ever rank? Struth, I'm used to having a poor start to season and crawling up from the millions. Very early days yet and big rank jumps are easy just by staying on the ball and catching some luck with players brought in.

I actually quite like my team for the upcoming weeks, providing Kane delivers something today (quite a big caveat I know).

I have Laporte as well and may just switch to TAA. Not sure yet. Got plenty of time to think about it, but getting all the 50-50 calls wrong at the moment.

Worst ever with Vardy this week? Think you held onto King to long! Obviously Laporte will likely be out for a while but don’t know this yet and with martial back looks OK. Of course best thing about wildcard is the boost you can get shaping your team for next few fixtures and will add some positivity back.

With three potentially out I can see it's tempting. but your team is in pretty good shape otherwise, not quite sure why your OR is so bad with those players. If Martial is fit to start after IB you may not want to change much.

That said, a few things I'd like to tweak and if you want to mix it up then do it, nice to have something to do over IB.

Reckon you should remain patient and resist wildcarding. King has good fixtures, Martial will be back to lead the line after the break and the rest of your team looks very good. Just do Laporte to your 5.5m city def of choice leaving a mil to possibly upgrade king next week

Considering penalties and general explosiveness, Would you agree with:

    Aguero(c) > Sterling(c)
    Salah(c) > Mané (c)

We know it’s likely Aguero will be rotated, so owners are gambling Aguero gets the lion share of PL fixtures while Jesus gets cup competitions.

I would rather have sterling than Kun due to extra point for a goal and clean sheet. Kun has 7 attacking returns to Sterling’s 5 yet he’s only 3 points ahead.

Was on Moura to dilva all week but ended up doing Moura & Jota —> Mount and Pukki (-4)....not to mention my GW3 double FT of VVD and Callum Wilson —> AWB and Rashford Is the gift that keeps on giving.

Yeah I had to sell him yesterday eventhough I wanted to keep him. His returns haven’t been bad at all and he was unlucky yesterday, YC cost him 2 points and there was contact there so definitely didn’t deserve that one.

Despite Kun being in great form and back to back hauls.

58 pts + Digne or 47 pts + Moura and Digne

Really think Aguero should have been 11.5 this season, would be more diversity amongst Sterling vs Aguero picks

Why...? He’s outscored Sterling in one start less.

Because Sterling will always be more popular at the same price due to extra point for goal and clean sheet point, he also virtually matched him for goals last season.
If Kun is 0.5 cheaper then it would even out in % selection.

Yeah, but that's if he matches him. Thus far, not the case, despite playing more.

The fact that people aren't buying Sterling is due to 1. familiarity due to last season, and 2. don't want to appear to be "kneejerking", which has nothing to do with the price.

Thoughts on Tammy? Do we think he can hold onto his position for a while or will 1/2 games without goals mean he will be dropped in a heart beat?

Haller over Barnes? It’s an option worth considering at least.

And it gives a few more weeks to watch Cantwell. I’m not convinced about him yet.

I would go with a defender or GK and Barnes, especially if you have Lundstram/Henderson as Sheff Utd rotates well with Burnley.

              Pope is a great shout.

A bit concerned that Barnes is over performing so far. Not sure Burnley will be in the top half of goals scored this season

Not expecting him to light the pl on fire. At his price if he gets 15 goals in a season it's a huge bargain And he is Currently Well on Course For that

It’s a good point. I guess because it a new season and we’re all looking at making the right moves there’s a temptation to forget that what you really want a lot of the time is a player to get 20 points from the next 6 so that you can leave them to it for a while.

I definitely feel that after a good year in my MLs and being here more last year I’m working to hard already this Season and need to let things sit a bit more

If Sterling scored 10 points per game he'd be at 380 points. He has to have the odd 2 pointer here and there. Don't worry about him all season.

Less effective? Have you seen his numbers? Use the full enormity of the 4 games we have to look at.

If I was doubling up I’d want Sterling and KDB most

In the last 3 games (ignoring first game as Aguero did not even start):
              - Aguero's xG is 2.35, xA is 0.66
              - Sterling's xG is 1.51, xA is 0.73

And that's despite Sterling playing 30 minutes more. With Jesus out, Aguero likely gets the full 90 in the short-term.
