How the Champions League and Europa League could affect FPL assets

The UEFA Champions League and Europa League group stages get underway on the other side of the international break.

The first ties take place in between Gameweeks 5 and 6, with the final group matches scheduled for mid-December.

The seven Premier League sides involved in European competition will also enter the Carabao Cup at the third round stage and, if these clubs progress to the quarter-final of that competition, they will play twice a week, every week, from now until the turn of 2020 – with the exception of the international breaks.

Four of the “big six” sit in the top seven of our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks (we’ll be Frisking the Fixtures over the international break) and players from these teams may be dominating Fantasy managers’ thoughts when it comes to transfers and Wildcards.

With that in mind, we thought it was worth a look at the fixture schedule for Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers over the next two months, given that all of these teams are still involved in European competition.

We have stopped at the end of October as the TV fixtures for November and beyond have yet to be announced, so there is a lot of rejigging to the Premier League calendar still to factor in.

We’ve had a fairly easy ride in the first month of 2019/20 but rotation may start to become more of an issue with all seven of the aforementioned sides competing on multiple fronts.

Jurgen Klopp said of his squad ahead of Gameweek 4:

We need them all, we need them all 100%. It is the very first part of the season, the first four Premier League games, and we had a busier schedule than other teams but still not that busy during the week.

That will all come afterwards, so no reason for resting players at the moment. It is about finding rhythm, finding the mood again, that we do the right things in the right moment. It is not the moment for a lot of changes.

After this international break, that will change completely. In the moment, the defensive set-up or whatever, as always, it is about who is in the best shape.

We have had a full week to train and when the boys won the last game and showed me then that they are still in their best possible shape, then we will only think about a couple of really small changes.

Pep Guardiola, when asked about Joao Cancelo (£5.4m), also said last week:

When we come back from the international break, we have Norwich, after three days, we have to travel to Ukraine, after three days we have a game here, then Carabao Cup. Start the real season in terms of a lot of games.

Joao, we’re delighted what we have seen but arrived late so was not in pre-season. Joao started to understand what to do. And now, maybe tomorrow, maybe after the international break, he start to play. He has to be ready.

Wolves, one of the most settled sides of 2018/19, have already been in midweek European action this season and some Fantasy managers have already suffered the consequences of Nuno Espirito Santo’s Europa League-influence rotation: Diogo Jota (£6.4m), Jonny (£5.5m), Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) and Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) have all been benched once in the league already.

Below is a club-by-club itinerary for September and October, with the fixtures in italics Champions League/Europa League/Carabao Cup ties.

We will look at how the respective clubs’ managers approached team selection around the group stage last season in a follow-up article tomorrow.

Does anyone play Sky fantasy football? I stuck a team in and its going okl. I just stuck in the obvious players and ones that seemed cheap compared to the prices on FPL . I ought to take it a bit more serious as its going well (Much better than my fpl teams have ever done!)
Any strategy tips? Ive just been trying to make sure I have someone to captain every day so far.

Some of the names on the watchlist are questionable…

If someone is listed as having form of ‘C’ and bad fixtures, why are they on the watchlist?

    eg

    Wan Bissaka
    Dunk
    Ings??

    Re-hash please

      Yeah agree.

Ings is not in the top 10 for forward options. Ayew, Wesley even Joelinton are better budget picks.

    1 FT, 0 ITB. A, B or C? Thanks!

    A) AWB > Matip/Maitland Niles
    B) Save FT and do AWB & Jota > Soyuncu & Haller/Abraham
    C) Wildcard time

    Pope - Button
    AWB - VVD - Digne - Zinchenko - Lundstram
    Sterling - KDB - Salah - Martial - Dendocker
    Pukki - Jota - Greenwood

It amazes me when people consider wildcarding a perfectly serviceable team. You have the big hitters and if you hate not having someone, a -4 will sort that right out.

Have only had Emerson one week but yeah Chelsea look poor at the back. Might be thinking about dropping Salah to KDB in GW6 and then upgrading Dendocker/Greenwood to Haller or Martial so I don't have to play Montoya anymore.

Suggestion on this top heavy WC time

    Pope/McGregor

Haha, valid point, but I feel the defence has to come good eventually, specially with Rudiger and Kante coming back, plus at 4.9, I feel it's worth the risk, did consider downgrading James to Ceballos or Mcginn and upgrading Zouma to Matip, but falling . 1 short

I like that it's different but with the value strikers doing really well (Pukki, Haller, Abraham etc.) and the extra points midfielders get for goal and cleanie, it seems silly to go like that

    Pope
    Zinc VVD Digne Lundstram

    A. VVD to TAA
    B. Dendoncker to Ceballos.
    C. Rico to 4.5.
    D. A combination of two (-4).
    E. Upgrade Dendoncker or G'wood to 6.2 (weaker bench).
    F. Hold.
A rise for TAA would prevent a combined move.

This. I've always noticed a trend of tailing off during the break.
It's as if everyone forgets about fantasy football once they realise break is on. It picks back up a few days before deadline again.
It's nothing like the price rocket everyone expects

Rotation for Lundstram & Donkey ??
Dead bench with triple City is a risk imo
      Not for me
I'd downgrade Auba & get two strikers from Barnes Pukki Haller for price of one Auba.
      Vardy + Barnes/Pukki instead of Auba + Green/Wick ??

No, there is an argument on the basis of minutes-to-goals ratio. Obviously Shearer has the absolute numbers and Henry had more of an all-round game.

Kinda selfish imo. Snodgrass playing would be better for Haller.

Yarmo won’t be nailed once Fornals settles in though. Snodgrass shows his worth every now and again. Amongst the wealth of 6m mid options Yarmo isn’t worth it

Anyone else dubious about fixture ticker which has the historic big 6 as some shade of red invariably?

Chelsea and Arsenal defence for example don’t feel red to me really. Likewise I’d have Leicester attack as one of the top 3/4 attacks.

Why would Leicester be considered as one of the top four attacks in the league?

Look at almost every attacking stat available since Rodgers came in.

6 goals in 4 games this season, one of the worst xG's in the league, attempts, big chances etc seem pretty average?

Relative to fixtures they've been more or less on trend by my analysis - but that puts them 8th best attack (top 6 + West ham who have performed notably above expectation)

Last season under Rodgers? Looking at 4 games this season is rather simple no? No one is going to make Liverpool bright blue on defence are they?

Take a look at the cumulative performances under Rodgers. That’s almost half a season’s data now. Top 3/4 in most attacking categories

Oh for sure, we need to look at the bigger picture, I just don't think they'll be the third or fourth top scorers in the league come end of the season, but time will tell.

Ah that’s where we differ. I’d have them top 2 in goals scored behind the big two.

You can set the difficulty ratings yourself, the default ones are a reasonable base

Reasonable base perhaps but tricky to recalibrate without knowing initial parameters.

I’m assuming a heavy historical bias given how poor United and Arsenal defence were last time out - far from red territory in defence really.

    Wan-Bisaka and Pulisic OUT for:

    A) TAA + Ceballos
    B) VVD + Lanzini
I already have Robbo, Haller and Pepe, so which double-up is better, Arsenal's or West Ham's ?

Thinking of making a change this GW.
    Ryan.
    Robertson, Lundstram, Coleman, VVD.
    Sterling, KDB, Martial, Salah.
    Pukki, King.
    Button, Cantwell, Wickham, A Smith.
    1FT, 0.1m ITB.

    1. Save the FT.
    2. Coleman -> Otamendi.
    3. Martial -> Iwobi/Ceballos.
    4. Martial -> Iwobi/Ceballos + King -> Haller (-4).

Any news on how long Martial expected to be out?

    Team at the mo:
    button/pope
    Digne / Soyuncu / Van Dijk (Kelly/Lundstram)
Salah / Sterling / Martial? / Lucus (Dendoncker)
    Vardy / Pukki / Jota

    Thanks!
